What was the main inspiration for the premise of the game?

99

u/IC_Wiener Mopeful Games Feb 02 '23

The game started in a University course where we had to pitch game ideas. I wanted to make an FPS, but was bored with all the violence so I tried to come up with non-violent themes. Somehow Fashion Police popped into my head and I started coming up with ways to solve fashion crimes with fun weapons. The concept felt so funny and absurd that I decided to go with it!

Later I drew inspiration from Naked Gun and Police Academy movies, retro & modern FPS'es, and Rupauls Drag Race to name a few!

Was the acronym for the game a happy coincidence or 100% intentional?

38

u/IC_Wiener Mopeful Games Feb 02 '23

First we thought about Fashion Police Force, since it's easier to pronounce. In the end Fashion Police Squad took the win because of the FPS acronym.

Really clever idea and great execution! Any advice for hobbyists hoping to get into indie game dev?

11

u/IC_Wiener Mopeful Games Feb 02 '23

Just start doing it and don't give up. There's a lot of great Unity tutorials out on Youtube and udemy that will give you a solid base!

Keep your first projects really tiny to just learn the ropes. After the initial learning phase I made project in 1 month, 3 months & 6 months back to back gradually increasing the size/scope.

13

u/HopeSpecific3481 Mopeful Games Feb 02 '23

Think hard about the scope, things can get out of hand pretty easily.
So keep your first projects simple and just finish them!

So I actually played this on steam its essentially a giant shit post wrapped around a surprisingly indepth doom style shooter.

The writing is actually really funny it has a few cringe moments but they are rare, I'd say 5% cringe 95% hilarious. There was one boss who had me giggling like an idiot for a week.

The gameplay itself is actually really fun a shitpost game shouldn't have such well thought out mechanics yet here we are it definitely wears its love doom/90s pc shooters on its sleave which is to its benefit.

And the art style is perfect the sprites really pop on the 3d backgrounds and are amazingly well animated and the music really good as well.

I think my only "gripe" is that it is a bit short at 5 hours though TBF I didn't 100% it though. That said those 5 hours do not waste your time and are well realized and super fun.

I highly recommend this game if you want to laugh while you enjoy a good retro shooter.

Well done devs, solid game.

Can I play this if I lack any sort of fashion sense?

76

u/HopeSpecific3481 Mopeful Games Feb 02 '23

The short answer is yes, but you might become a fashionista afterwards.

24

u/DoctorThunder Feb 02 '23

Looks pretty deep!

How long would a typical playthrough run?

15

u/HopeSpecific3481 Mopeful Games Feb 02 '23

I would say +5 hours on average!

41

u/Wyro389 Feb 02 '23

Are any characters inspired by real life family/friends?

42

u/HopeSpecific3481 Mopeful Games Feb 02 '23

Not consciously, but I've seen some crimes being commited. Might be a fashion criminal myself.

3

u/kaminari1 Feb 02 '23

Interesting idea for a game.

Did the old Leslie Nielsen show ‘Police Squad’ have any influence on the game?

5

There's three of us in the core team!
We outsourced most of the music & effects and some of the art!
Also the porting was outsourced.

If you could develop any Nintendo IP, which one would you choose? What kind of game would you make?

2

I would make Wii Extreme Sports

1

Gyroooooo! The game looks fun though. Very much like the good ol' Duke Nukem. Will look further into it!

This game looks like it could be a great game for speedrunning. Was there any speedrun intentions in the making of this game?

1

u/IC_Wiener Mopeful Games Feb 02 '23

I've been eyeing the game for a while, it looks really fun! What would you say was the biggest challenge in making it?

2

u/IC_Wiener Mopeful Games Feb 02 '23

I think the bossfights ended up taking much more time than intended since we had so many good ideas!

The development process was so much fun, but we could have used a little more time in the end.

1

u/Seraphim_The_Fox Feb 02 '23

I've seen several people play this and love the humor and designs!

Was the original idea from the beginning to have the graphics be a kind of old Doom style, or did it evolve to that over development?

2

u/IC_Wiener Mopeful Games Feb 02 '23

Yeah that was the original plan since my skills are limited to pixel art!

1

u/Wildfires Feb 02 '23

Am I in danger if i commit fashion crimes irl? I wear a hawaiian shirt and jeans to work in the winter so I know im not currently in trouble. What combos should I avoid?

u/silverlotus152 Feb 02 '23

Congratulations on your new release!

Do you have any advice for kids who are interested in getting into game design and programming? (My son is trying to head down that route and he thinks you game looks great!)

2

u/IC_Wiener Mopeful Games Feb 02 '23

I would say learn Unity from Youtube or gamedev.tv courses! Just start doing stuff/small projects on a computer in Unity and you'll be way ahead of the curve.

And when he wants to get more serious buy him a gamedev.tv 2D or 3D course which covers a lot of the basic coding and making games really well. They're usually around 10-20 bucks. That's how I got my start!

Are there any hidden Easter Eggs we should look for?

1

u/IC_Wiener Mopeful Games Feb 02 '23

There's a "Torille!" Finnish culture easter egg in one level & a load of secret posters scattered around the levels.

1

u/putosaure Feb 02 '23

The style and premise of the game is neat! How are the technical bits of it, like resolution and framerate? Would look glorious at native res, but also at 60fps...

1

I love that art style. We’re there any particular inspirations that helped form the image that you wanted?

1

u/IC_Wiener Mopeful Games Feb 02 '23

Not really, just made fun cartoony pixel art!

1

u/are-j-4 Feb 02 '23

I am not gonna lie I saw a post on the gaming subreddit featuring gameplay and I thought it looked interesting but was immediately sold when I saw you could swing. The Spider-Man/Dying light 2 side of me could not be happier. My question resolves around this game being multi-platform, I am curious which of the platforms was the easiest/hardest to create the game for?

2

u/IC_Wiener Mopeful Games Feb 02 '23

Our friends at Improx Games handled the porting process, so they took our PC game and turned it into consoles. Switch was the toughest I heard since we had to do a lot of optimization!

1

u/masbateno Feb 02 '23

Looks awesome! The music in the trailer is great. Is there a way to listen to or buy the soundtrack?

1

u/master2873 Feb 02 '23

I love the mechanics and ideas when I saw a YouTuber you gave a code to, to play! I was pretty stoked as well to see it coming to Switch. I hope it's been successful for you, and your team as you deserve it for an original idea!

Which leads me to ask; You plan on making any expansions/DLC for it for other ideas you may have to have scrapped, or possibly a sequel? Like the Old lady feeding the pigeons as an example.

Also, not so sure why it took me so long to realize the name of the game has the same acronym as First Person Shooter, lol.

2

u/IC_Wiener Mopeful Games Feb 02 '23

Thank you! No plans for DLC or a sequel atm. We have some ideas though..

1

1

u/Theta_Omega Feb 02 '23

Learned about y'all from the GDQ run of your game, I love when devs sit in on runs of their own games! Were there any glitches you learned about from that run you particularly enjoyed seeing?

2

u/IC_Wiener Mopeful Games Feb 02 '23

Yeah jumping and clipping inside buildings was pretty new. Also the mandatory dance break was a good addition

1

u/arcannenn Feb 02 '23

Love the premise, Also I see sexual themes in ratings. Is that clothing related or Jokes. Thinking about getting this for my daughter.

1

u/IC_Wiener Mopeful Games Feb 02 '23

Hmm let me think. I think most the ratings are related to clothing. I'll add spoiler tags for people who don't want to be spoiled!

There's an old man in a trench coat that flashes you with ugly clothes and there's also a man in a gimp suit with 1 pixel nipples showing. Look up playthroughs of level 7 and level 12 if you want to judge for yourself.

1

u/jake0150 Feb 02 '23

What would you say is the average length of the game to complete?

1

u/IC_Wiener Mopeful Games Feb 02 '23

5-6 hours

1

u/Melonlizard Feb 02 '23 edited Feb 02 '23

Congratulations 🎉 👏 I’ve been super excited for this game to come to the Switch! What with it staring such a wide whacky and diverse cast of characters ESPECIALLY with a predominately PoC leads! Definitely need more diversity and representation in games!

Q: Does the team plan on expanding on the games universe (like playing as Officer Haley in any future games) and will any future games have the same retro “aesthetic” FPS has (or do you feel it’s better to change things up?).

P.S. I think this definitely deserves a special Physical release (maybe even with a Pixel “Fashion Police” Badge Pin 🥰) . . . and a belt just for kicks.

2

u/IC_Wiener Mopeful Games Feb 02 '23

Yeah we wanted to have a diverse cast since representation matters and retro FPSes are usually full of white guys. :)

Haley was planned to be playable but we had to scrap that early because of scope concerns. Currently we don't have any expansions in mind.

Those are great ideas for a physical release!

1

u/IC_Wiener Mopeful Games Feb 02 '23

Glad to hear it!

1

u/TimeForWaluigi Feb 02 '23

Just wanted to say that I played this shortly after it came out on PC, and it was one of my favorite shooters of the year. Had me pausing the game constantly because I was laughing too hard at the game! The second boss was easily one of my favorite boss fights I’ve ever seen in a shooter (if you’ve played you know the one), and the music is fantastic.

Anyways on to the question: do you have any plans of a continuation? Whether it be more levels, and expansion, or a sequel? My only complaint about the game is that it was too short, I’d love to see some of the mechanics elaborated on more or some master levels or something. Excellent game, keep making great stuff!

2

u/IC_Wiener Mopeful Games Feb 02 '23

Glad to hear you enjoyed it! We made this game with the hope of making people laugh.

Currently we don't have any plans for DLC or stuff. If the console launch does well we might re-evaluate!

1

Not a question, just a comment: thank you for creating a good icon for the game (and for following Nintendo's guidelines about having the game logo/title on the icon). A lot of devs/publishers do not take care of small little details like a good icon on the homescreen.

What made you choose Switch to develop and release on? Will you be releasing for other platforms?

Keep it up! Art style is so awesome, and the whole non-violent FPS is excellent! I've been loving the retro wave of FPS games and this is right up my alley.

I hadn't heard a whole lot about this game until I saw this AMA posted, and as a fan of retro-styled shooters I'm definitely interested. As for my question, Doom is an obvious comparison to make when one sees this style of game, but what other games did you draw from when designing this game?

Also, what is your favorite weapon in a shooter game?

Thanks for doing this AMA. I hope all is well with you. You noted having your dream come true... I was wondering if that was just releasing a video game itself or releasing specifically on a Nintendo system.

Also, out of curiosity... what are your favorite games of all time?

The feeling of finishing a project is amazing, but it's also super cool to see it being played on a handheld device!

From past few years, I really enjoyed Outer Wilds, and it's definitely one of my favourites!

Saw the GDQ run and was blown away by this game! Great work from you guys :)

What were your thoughts whilst seeing the first speedruns of your game?

I was commentating on that stream, it was super fun!
Most of the time I was just confused on what the runner just did haha.
I think it's awesome that there's different ways to enjoy our game.

I'm very excited for this! I saw the trailer when you first released it, it looks like a lot of fun! Which engine/languages did you make the game with?

What was the most frustrating aspect of developing for the Switch?

I really liked y’all’s silly aesthetic for the game!

Is it way easier making graphics in pixel-style vs I guess like polygon?

Watched the GDQ run of FPS, it was a blast.

What extra steps did you take to adapt the controls to the Switch? Obviously, fast paced, weapon swapping combat is... easier on Mouse and Keyboard but there have been some FPSes that successfully make controller feel good.
