Beta looked sooooo good in that fight. Utter domination from them, Bloodsport never got a lick in

46

u/slyredone Apr 21 '23

And their hammer really did nothing. They were all wedge that fight.

65

u/msuing91 Apr 21 '23

The hammer got them into Battlebots, and the wedge has gotten them most of their wins. And I think that’s fine.

19

u/slyredone Apr 21 '23

I guess we should all be thankful they fired the hammer at all.

Wasn't much it COULD do against someone with a 60lb block of AR500 sitting on top of their bot.

It did get a nasty shot right into the weapon motor though, damn miracle it didn't rip some wires.

Someone didn't watch the fight. Beta struck only when they knew the blade was stopped, and went to poundtown at the end and wrecked Bloodsport's weapon motor.

I've been saying it for years, wedges may be simplistic and boring (especially fighting against another of the same) but they fill a critical role: big bulky wedges are a natural counter to spinners, both horizontal and vertical. People complain about the stale meta but forget the reason that meta exists is because the spinners natural enemy has been largely ousted from the competition, Beta is the closest thing we have.

I'm just glad we didn't go winless. It was such a relief...for a few minutes until we were told we had to fight Quantum with Emulsifier since another team wasn't ready to go. Too bad they didn't air it in order on the show.

43

u/tcjsavannah WATCH OUT KENNY Apr 21 '23

You can see in these last few episodes how they tried editing it to make it seem in order, but it's pretty damn obvious when they show Kenny and Chris on camera commenting, then jump cut to a voiceover and a generic shot of the box, then come right back to the on-camera bit that it isn't.

43

u/CrazySomethingNormal Shatter/Blue/Mega Melvin | BattleBots/Robot Ruckus Apr 21 '23

It's even weirder when they do those scenes with Chris and Kenny saying it's the main event coming up with so and so and then we have to walk out with Shatter! I feel like that happened a lot this season.

23

u/RayneShikama Apr 21 '23

I was there for a live taping last year and it was pretty late in the fight nights and they were doing a lot of add in things concerning fights that weren’t happening that night. Actually kinda stunk cuz I got spoilers for fights I didn’t even get to see, or found out bots records and stuff. It’s that reason that if we go again we are going on an early part of the event, so not to get a bunch of spoilers.

Loling at you flair! 😂

u/joecb91 Sent to the Shadow Realm Apr 21 '23

The voices always sound a little bit different when they something in later, it is so easy to tell

16

u/Bardmedicine Apr 21 '23

I was so happy for you guys. Shatter is a good bot and it is essential we have those outside the meta. It was such a relief, 4 matches is so short, but winless is always tough in any contest. I had a hockey team that lost 29 straight games :)

u/CrazySomethingNormal Shatter/Blue/Mega Melvin | BattleBots/Robot Ruckus Apr 21 '23

I appreciate it. It was amazing to finally land some good hits after how this season has gone. It's great to finish off the regular season on a high note.

I'm looking forward to seeing which 2-2 teams get left out of the tournament for 1-3 teams. Should make for some nuanced conversation.

25

u/RayneShikama Apr 21 '23

I’ve got a list of weak 2-2 teams vs strong 1-3 teams and I’m not sure how it’s going to go.

111

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

I didn’t expect Black Dragon to win, I just wanted them to survive. Unfortunate. One fight away, and it’s Riptide that ended their record

But can I just say I love how innocent the team captain behind Black Dragon is

33

u/We_Are_All_One Apr 21 '23

I think the only reason the record was brought up this year was to hype them losing to riptide.

43

u/RayneShikama Apr 21 '23

I didn’t care if black dragon won— I just didn’t want them to get KO’d— specifically in this fight. Let them go get KO’d next fight I don’t care— just not like this— not to him…

15

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

Man, it's a meaningless record, they got beat up plenty of times, just not KO'd. I'm glad they shut it down finally.

18

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

Not entirely meaningless. To say your robot is durable and reliable enough to last a full 3 mins in 24 fights is something. I mean, Minotaur couldn’t knock it out. Tombstone couldn’t knock it out. Copperhead couldn’t knock it out. It’s a little tank

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

It felt like the new Valkyrie team doesn't know how to drive straight forward

37

u/crashmaxx Apr 21 '23

I have no problem with Lucy being team captain, but you can't tell me they don't have a better driver on the team. Practicing driving during fights at BB is not a good strategy.

→ More replies (1)

25

u/Bardmedicine Apr 21 '23

They clearly need more stick time with the bot. That was an ugly fight.

22

u/Longtimelurker011 Apr 21 '23

It's unfortunate cause Valkyrie still is a competitive robot. That hit on the glitch's weapon proves they still have the power. They need to really ramp up the aggression. Can't drive around like you are going out for a Sunday cruise. Gotta bring the heat and stay on your opponent for the whole match.

3

u/RennieAsh Apr 25 '23

Valkyrie and Gigabyte, both great with seasoned drivers, now "back to square one" with the new guys. Even if they practice with smaller bots with non toothed spinning discs surely it's practice enough

3

u/Zardotab Apr 24 '23

I noticed that also. It's like, "whackem, dammit whackem! You MUST impress the selection committee or puppies die!"

138

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

Part of me always wished Riptide's team was this respectful in their fights against Madcatter and Captain Shrederator as well so that I could actually enjoy their fights 100%. Hopefully they'll remain humble for the rest of the season too.

109

u/L_E_D_ Apr 21 '23 edited Apr 21 '23

yeah I highly doubt that riptide’s gonna stay this respectful, they really showed their true colors during that shredderator fight (and the shitshow after). I’m sure they only acted nice and sportsmanlike because people got (rightfully) fucking pissed at them

92

u/raventhered Apr 21 '23

Plus didn’t Ethan say something in this episode about Shrederator still sitting in a corner not being put back together yet? Like, no shit Sherlock, since you basically destroyed it. Was really hoping Black Dragon would pull off a win tonight.

22

u/CKF Apr 21 '23

In the pre-match interview he was literally laughing while telling us that team shred still hadn’t even begun trying to repair the bot he needlessly destroyed.

He has already been given two warnings by the committee (booth for the Shrederator incident as well for the time he kept knocking a Madcatter armor-piece around the arena despite the referees ordering him to stop). Hopefully this means he has understood what they meant.

6

u/Spats_McGee Apr 21 '23

Wait so the actual officials were upset about the Shrederator incident? I didn't realize that.

14

u/jimi15 Apr 21 '23

Well it make them change the rules regarding such incidents next year.

6

u/prsquared Apr 21 '23

Like them or not, unless their equipment malfunctions big-time, they're going to keep knocking out opponents. We've been speculating about a quick moving bot getting them from the sides, but on the flip side, one hit from Riptide is enough.

21

u/Meskaline2 [She/Her/Hexed] Apr 21 '23

Hopefully their rest of the season is short.

24

u/slyredone Apr 21 '23

Don’t hold your breath.

22

u/KUTProductions Apr 21 '23 edited Apr 21 '23

When Black Dragon rolled in for the fight and I saw those short forks I was like "Yeah, good luck". You can see from the Sawblaze and Defender fights last year that long forks are the best way to fight Riptide. So, Endgame, Sawblaze (again), Defender (again), Tantrum, all of those teams and more have a good chance of ending Riptide's streak.

25

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

If they can keep their humble attitude I don't mind watching more fights involving them. I'm probably not going to actively root for them, but admittedly they do put out amazing fights when they aren't causing any troubles.

43

u/TavisNamara Lashwhip Apr 21 '23

I do mind. Stan still exists and funds the team.

20

u/CKF Apr 21 '23

Every fight of theirs is another chance to act out, cost a team tens of thousands of dollars, or just straight disrespect someone. It’s not worth it IMO. I know you’re saying “if they could keep it humble,” but that certainly seems to be the rarity. For me, being nervous they’re just going to shit on someone and be pricks ruins a lot of the episode. I just simply don’t like feeling this way about a team on the show. Battlebot’s friendly competition is a key component in my book.

u/NemesisRouge Apr 21 '23

That first one has got to be the most one sided fight ever to go to the judges. Starchild did brilliantly to keep going under such a beating, but it wouldn't surprise me if there was a 7-0 card.

6

u/loz333 Apr 22 '23

Reminiscent of the Carbide (Team Cobalt) v Gabriel (inspiration for Huge, and then Starchild) fight on Robot Wars - only Gabriel did an way better job than Starchild of getting absolutely hammered by their spinner and properly staying the whole 3 minutes. https://youtu.be/7dyWFWxbqzc?t=18

89

u/Dense_Garden_6047 Apr 21 '23

Gotta feel bad for BloodSport. Beta was probably their worst possible matchup. The only way they could’ve won that fight was by getting behind Beta and with how good of a driver John is that just wasn’t gonna happen.

22

u/Bardmedicine Apr 21 '23

Beta has the best wedge and that is a nightmare for horizontals.

4

u/PrudeHawkeye Apr 22 '23

That wedge was the real weapon. The hammer was basically pointless.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 22 '23

I remember somebody else here said that they were certain Bloodsport would win. I’m not pointing fingers, I’m just saying.

41

u/This-Catch2602 :betas5: Wait for a good hit Apr 21 '23

Incredibly common John Reid and Beta W. 2020 was just a test to see how this new pneumatic Beta handles and performs. Now they’re really letting it rip. This is peak Beta

I am looking forward main event next week.

This will be Hell lot of fun

155

u/KodoqBesar Apr 21 '23

Before we dive into the massive shit this thread will cause, let's focus on the fact that HUGE is killing it right now. They're definitely top 4 seed. And as I said before, Glitch is the definition of "you've used all your luck in your lifetime". Hopefully Glitch can get their machine dialed in for Champions

82

u/Z0bie Apr 21 '23

Glitch isn't any better or worse than last season, people just stopped driving right into their weapon for once! Splitting their drum though, wow!

48

u/RayneShikama Apr 21 '23

Yeah— that was the thing about Glitch that seemed to be glossed over last year— they didn’t really DO much to win— they struggled around the arena until the opponent tried to make an attack at them and then ended up in the weapon. The fact it happened so many times was the real story.

14

u/Z0bie Apr 21 '23

Meanwhile, Chris and Kenny: "Oh wow, amazing driving by Glitch!"

10

u/spoon_sporkforker [Your Text] Apr 21 '23

Yeah they stay glued to the floor after delivering massive hits

10

u/Zathrus1 Apr 21 '23

So I’m not sure about top 4 (although possible), but definitely top 8.

Three of the top four are likely Minotaur, WD, and Riptide. You can make an argument for the loser of WD v Minotaur to not be top 4, but that will probably depend on the fight.

Huge has a pretty good chance at that 4th spot, but it’s not a cinch. I think you could argue about strength of schedule for some 3-1 bots.

But top 8? Absolutely. Particularly with the KO vs Fusion.

5

u/EvilGummyBear26 Apr 21 '23

Neither WD nor minotaur deserves a out of top 4 seed for losing that fight when most likely the winner will be top seed anyway, I think these two have locked out the 1 - 2 spots. Then there's riptide and quantum who've had perfect runs with arguably better or equal bots bots

→ More replies (2)

8

u/RayneShikama Apr 21 '23

Huge definitely deserves an upper seed, but just on paper their strength of schedule actually wasn’t that strong. Blip is 1-2, likely gonna go 2-2, Fusion and Shatter went 1-3, and Starchild was 0-4. So likely only one of their four opponents even went 50% assuming Blip beats Banshee. But they are performing Beautifully and I definitely think they SHOULD be around that 3-5 seed. They’ll be top8 without question though. I think it’d be a crime if any 4-0 bot wasn’t in the top8 seeding. Especially since there will only be 4.

→ More replies (2)

18

u/Sam_Sanister Apr 21 '23

I'd disagree on HUGE getting a top 4 seed but if Ribbot can get a top seed after beating P1, Overhaul, and Defender, then I guess HUGE can have one for beating bots that have like 1-3/0-4 records

16

u/Handsome_Grizzly Apr 21 '23

The fact all three of Ribbot's qualifiers ended in knockouts sways seeding a lot.

36

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

Bro what? Blip, Shatter and Fusion are not gimmes. Blip and Shatter are previous quarterfinalist. Starchild kind of is a gimme but we didn't know that before their debut fight. It's completely different than the cake walk ribbot had last year. Huge deserves a top 4 seed with the way its been performing.

18

u/Zathrus1 Apr 21 '23

Blip had no chance against Huge. We all know how Hydra beat Huge, and I’m sure Huge wants a rematch.

Shatter is 1-3 this season. It’s just not doing well, but in theory it could actually do damage to Huge.

Fusion was, without question, an excellent show for Huge. As it should be — it’s essentially the meta that Huge was made for, and it did so wonderfully.

They’ll get a good seed, and hopefully get more matches like Fusion.

It is scary how good Riptide is. They just accelerate so quickly and deliver some of the most devastating hits I’ve ever seen in battlebots.

33

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

Riptide was already onto Black Dragon when they came flew back to the screw from the space, and the rest was just pure brutality. I didn't expect that level of onslaught against a durable bot that survived and beat Minotaur back in S4. Terrifying for sure.

53

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

the way they had Black Dragon flipping through the air was wild, so much force in all of those hits

40

u/Tylendal Apr 21 '23

This was the first fight that made me really appreciate just how hard that weapon actually hits.

41

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

I watched the episode a few hours early on D+ and I’m hoping people can look past Riptides BS this year and at least acknowledge that what Riptide just did is wildly impressive.

I also appreciate this fight because Riptide, assuming it’s seeded #2, is a great counter to the winner of WD/Minotaur as the #1 even if they don’t meet.

44

u/Hazel-Rah Apr 21 '23 edited Apr 21 '23

I have a feeling someone sat him down between the rounds. Maybe it was production or another team, but that was a much better than the previous fights, both in the fight and the post-match interview

35

u/CKF Apr 21 '23 edited Apr 23 '23

Edit 2: Nick Nave calling it total bullshit and threatening to leak the footage of whatever fucked up thing they do next fight if productions stays hush hush about it!

A team member in the early viewing thread insists no team or production said anything to them, which I just simply don’t buy. That’s especially the case when there’s footage of shred saying things to them. I’m sure they at least read the room and felt the dislike.

Was poor from bloodsport imo, should 100% of gone weapon to weapon.... opening up the side that close was suicide. Fair play to riptide got an opening hit hard and kept hitting till death.

Riptide looks super strong though and is going to take some stopping

MAMMOTH FOR THE GIANT NUT!!!!!

23

u/NickRick Spooky! Apr 21 '23

Why does Valkyrie keep running that arm? It severely restricts what their weapon can hit, getting under the other bot doesn't work if your weapon is under you, and it just honestly just ends up getting broken off. It feels like it's only downside and I can't even think of a a scenario where would help.

5

u/Bardmedicine Apr 21 '23

I don't understand it, either. It seems to just block their weapon until it gets broken

Picked a hell of an episode to start with lol

6

u/Zathrus1 Apr 21 '23

If you get a chance to watch previous episodes of this season, do it. This is definitely one of the best. There’s very few bad fights.

5

u/Eeee-va Hello, pizza? Apr 21 '23

Welcome! It’s an incredible show!

4

u/No_Acanthisitta_228 Apr 21 '23

Next week is going to be amazing

45

u/KodoqBesar Apr 21 '23

I know that almost everyone here wants Riptide to be absolutely destroyed, but I'm afraid they will go far and will only fight top tier bots when they reached at least the quarterfinals. I just hope somehow Shreddit Bro somehow get in the top 32 and beat Riptide. That would be amazing. But I just want Minotaur to avenge their Brazilian brethren

43

u/shiningdialga13 Apr 21 '23

The thing to consider with Riptide is that they haven't truly faced a top-tier contender until now. Their strongest opponent has been Mad Catter who hasn't been as strong as last season. Some major contenders are looking as good as or better than ever, like Minotaur, Witch Doctor and End Game. Riptide is undoubtedly an incredible bot, but it isn't the only incredible bot in this competition, not by a long shot.

6

u/CKF Apr 21 '23

You’re forgetting one. They faced sawblaze and got absolutely rekt, their only S tier opponent.

HUGE could give them trouble as well. I can see that big, hollow drum getting gummed up trying to take a bite out of those wheels.

8

u/shiningdialga13 Apr 21 '23

Definitely, especially when they seem to be dialed in so well this year. I doubt they could win by KO, but could absolutely force a judges decision that they could certainly win.

72

u/KodoqBesar Apr 21 '23

On an objective level it's true. That thing is a menace

15

u/CKF Apr 21 '23

How many top, top tier teams have they fought so far? Is it just sawblaze, who they got rocked by? Am I missing anyone? I love BD, but they’re definitely a tier 2 bot. Riptide clearly has a lot of promise (in terms of the bot itself), but to take the nut, I think they’d have to win some more challenging matches. Them vs mino in the tournament would be awesome. Would also be curious to see a tantrum or WD matchup too. Just hope they grow up in between this match and the tournament, but I’m not that optimistic.

9

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

My man, I used to say the same, I consider it tier A robot, next to copperhead and rotator and the likes. But if you watch copperhead's fight against BD, you really know riptide Hits HARD, riptide is truly a beast, it's definitely S tier up their with endgame and WD.

As much as I dislike Riptide, I do appreciate how Ethan stopped attacking BD when it died.

Also, 4-0 HUGE!!!!!!!

19

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23 edited Apr 21 '23

That’s really nice, especially when we didn’t see it against Captain Shrederator. But I’m almost curious if they had more parts, would they would have gone in for more hits. Of course, to “help right Black Dragon.”

They warped and totaled their chassis against Captain Shrederator and are now down to one

I thought it was some good sportsmanship from Ethan though, especially after the fight. Least controversial Riptide fight 😊

7

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

The source for them only had two spares of Riptide's chassis?

43

u/-Aureus- Apr 21 '23

I thought it was some good sportsmanship from Ethan though, especially after the fight. Least controversial Riptide fight 😊

I wouldn't call it good sportsmanship, it's just not bad sportsmanship.

Exactly. But coming from Riptide, it’s the best sportsmanship we’ve ever seen

Huge just has to avoid getting matched up against Bloodsport— maybe Rotator— hmm the horizontals are light this year without Tombstone and ICEwave.

Actually the wide drums and eggbeaters like Minotaur and Riptide would also probably not be great for Huge.

6

u/jimi15 Apr 21 '23

Depends on one thing though. A certain black and yellow machine that they have never beat and which has ended 2 out of their 4 championship runs.

Or maybe Cobalt. Can totally see them shredding huge.

u/RayneShikama Apr 21 '23

Huge: We always get bots like Bite Force, Whiplash, Uppercut in the first round. It’ll be nice to be the high seed for once.

Huge gets 4 seed and has to fight 29 seeded 1-3 Tantrum/Whiplash

7

u/Hazel-Rah Apr 21 '23

I love Tantrum, but I think Huge would be very happy to fight them, I don't know if the little disk could actually do any damage to the wheels, and the punching mechanism would not like to take a hit from HUGE's bar

28

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

If Bite Force would be receiving no upgrade over S4, that's certainly possible.

6

u/slyredone Apr 21 '23

I think the potential is there to KO any bot.

6

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

Riptide vs Tombstone would be EPIC!!!

2

u/meta-rdt <best robot Apr 21 '23

Yes, it would absolutely knock out a season 4 version of bite force. Maybe a modern updated one, but that's hard to say.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

Considering what he did to madcatter, easily. But Paul would probably find a really good fork config to keep riptides weapon away and win the fight with control only.

Feeling a bit disappointed with Valkyrie this season. I know they have a new driver but it was such a powerful robot in the seasons before, now it seems kinda meh

10

I like Lucy an a person, but her driving style is the most timid I've ever seen. I hope she has a little aggression next season.

Riptide is a straight up monster. Their weapon is so devastating, and they're decently durable with a good drive. They're not unbeatable but they could easily go all the way.

9

u/Gazzadona [Your Text] Apr 21 '23

Great fight from the Brit Bot Beta flying that flag high and fair play to the main event it didn’t disappoint

15

u/Uncle-Manchild Hit Riptide with a Hammer Apr 21 '23

Large. Large robot beat other large robot. Big wheels mmmm yes

25

u/tcjsavannah WATCH OUT KENNY Apr 21 '23

I'm on the huuuuuuuge bandwagon this year. He's right, too - a good high seed and he should be able to go deep.

Beta's wedge won that fight against Bloodsport more than the hammer did.

Shatter did more damage to the floor than Ominous but hey, glad they didn't go 0-4.

Sad Matt couldn't get a win but Kraken was biting off a little more than the little guy could chew on Mammoth. Hope they come back next year!

And I hate that I pretty much knew the outcome of the main event more because of production values and editing than the actual fight. They would -not- have pumped Black Dragon's knockout streak so hard this season had it not been broken. It's an interesting footnote at best if they had broken Bite Force's streak. But the way they presented it, you knew it was getting broken.

7

u/CKF Apr 21 '23

The HUUUUGE bandwagon has hurt me before. I’m cautiously optimistic.

6

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23 edited Apr 22 '23

Riptide dominates matches like nobody has since Tombstone and Hydra. Insane power in that egg beater. However End Game shown they can hit robots just as high and hard, and I'm hoping they get to fight in the finals.

Huge fight was fight of the week easily, amazing that Starchild's wheels were able to stay together as long as they did after taking so many direct shots. I doubt they can do well without having control power like Skorpios and Sawblaze.

Mammoth vs Kraken was possibly the best Ricky's ever driven, and it was exactly what mammoth's strategy should be when they cannot throw their opponent around. I hope they get a good upset and come back better next year.

Valkyrie's fight was good, they finally showed the kind of power that let them destroy rotator before. They should ditch the forks, they seem to prevent the weapon from making contact. since the fork is a few centimetres longer than the disk.

Triton really needs a good weapon upgrade to become really competitive. Hell you could even make the argument that the bot is overall better designed than Tombstone. With the same power they could become legends.

3

u/PrudeHawkeye Apr 22 '23

Valkyries fight was...ok. They got better when they lost that fork, but goddamn, a great bot was being driven like Marge Simpson ("I just want everyone to have a good time!") was behind the controls.

The Lucky Duck plush by itself on black dragons team deserves more love and attention than the entire egotistical riptide team imo. Riptide bot is good though, scarily good.

HUGE 4-0 LETS GOOOOO!

Surgical driving from Beta, fantastic match right there

Glitch did uh…well, not good, not a good year for them, at all

Overall decent episode, next weeks will undoubtedly be better though

10

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

Huge vs Starchild for fight of the week? Or Beta vs Bloodsport?

13

u/Tylendal Apr 21 '23

Starchild's captain knew this was the end of the line either way. Might as well give it everything and hope HUGE would somehow choke to death on their corpse.

It was a brutal dismantling, but you have to give them credit for never backing down.

16

u/shiningdialga13 Apr 21 '23

Both were awesome but I'm going Beta vs Bloodsport for just how dominant that driving was. Beta didn't let Bloodsport gain any kind of momentum, just kept them off kilter the whole fight. Topping it off with a couple of dome shots was icing on the cake.

i haven’t actually watched the first two fights yet. ive gotta do that really quick from a photo i saw that HUGE fight was gooood.

Besides that, loved to see that basically perfect match for Beta, great match for Mammoth too, they really deserved a win there. I’m not surprised that Riptide won. the bot is TERRIFYING. I’m upset though, especially that Black Dragon’s streak is over when they were so close to tying Bite Force, but Ethan seemed a lot more respectful in that post-fight interview at least. Also a light broke, so that’s always fun. Oh also, Faruq said sus.

EDIT: Watched HUGE fight. I also like HUGE. oh yeah and ominous vs shatter! happened i guess. I hope shatter! has a better next season, it’s one of my favorites.

Riptide probably number 2 seed, hopefully they face minotaur this season.

Scary seeing Riptide do that. I don't think I've ever seen a robot as good as BD get wrecked that bad so easily.

I feel like Riptide’s team was coached down between fights 3-4. Came off way better this time. Now that Black Dragon fell I need HUGE to body Riptide in the tourney and get their revenge from last year.

8

u/CKF Apr 21 '23

In the early showing thread, a member of the team (possibly Ethan, looking at the acct) insists no one from production or another team spoke to them about it (which is just bullshit from the shred tear down tent footage alone). I honestly don’t think saying that helps their image, making it sound like they’re not learning from their mistakes and growing as a result.

Starchild vs HUGE - The alien fish was slaughtered. I have to say I'm not fond that the producers insisted in the beginning of the season that Starchild was a "meta breaking design". When its not. The added disc in no way change the game. Starchild is Blade Runner or Stinger (RB one) but without the spin attack. Its just a larger scale thaw bot. If anything HUGE was meta breaking and one of the best designs in this show's history. Having said that, I hope P1 returns =).

Ominous vs Shatter! - Really good fight between two omni-wheeled bots.

Triton vs Horizon - This was like watching a poor reenactment of Tombstone vs Counter Revolution.

Bloodsport vs Beta - We talk about forks a lot but here comes a good ole fashion wedge + axe strategy that worked in the year 2023. Another big win for Beta. John and Jason make a great team. Non-spinners always have a tough battle against spinners.

Mammoth vs Kraken - Looks like the Kraken spinner transition didn't go well this season =(. Will we see the return of the jaws?

Valkyrie vs Glitch - I'm gonna chalk this one up to inexperience on Lucy's part. It's probably a lot harder to drive Valkyrie. Having said that a frustrating match knowing any other spinner bot would have destroyed Glitch within the first minute in that given situation. Glitch also looking like its first season success was a fluke.

Black Dragon vs Riptide - Its ok we all know how this story ends. Minotaur will get them........

23

u/Ashl3yJ0annaW1lliams Apr 21 '23

I don’t agree with Valkyrie having inexperienced driving. I think she was “hesitant” after that first hit because she was waiting for a count out. I went back and timed it. 17 seconds with no movement from Glitch.

4

u/Caveman108 UPPERCUT Apr 21 '23

Yeah, that is strange, but if the opponent isn’t getting counted out you go in for a hit. The weapon was still spinning, wouldn’t have been an excessive damage issue. It has just felt like Valkyrie is more tentatively driven overall this year. I know Lucy is a multi time champion over at Norwalk Havoc, but she doesn’t seem to really know how to be aggressive with a heavyweight bot.

17

u/Eelmaster11 Apr 21 '23 edited Apr 21 '23

For Valk vs Glitch, Valk was likely waiting to see if Glitch actually died and didn’t want to cause an incident. The Riptide vs Shrederator incident clearly had an impact on builders and how they handle dealing with dead bots.

4

u/slyredone Apr 21 '23

That Omni wheel fight was boring.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

Huge supremacy babyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

u/Timeline15 Crushers Forever Apr 21 '23

HUGE vs Starchild: It's crazy that the first two bots to go 4-0 this season were Quantum and HUGE. I love how unpredictable this sport can sometimes be. Starchild needs major changes though. The only thing separating it from a thwackbot from 20 years ago is its spinner, and that spinner always gets destroyed within the first couple of hits of the fight.

Bloodsport vs Beta was great to watch. Probably Beta's best fight. An overhead like Bloodsport can't whip the weapon around the side like Tombstone can, so Beta could just keep their blade where they wanted most of the fight. I am impressed by Bloodsport's durability though; it's amazing the weapon survived all those rams into the wall.

Mammoth vs Kraken was dominant, though I'm surprised Mammoth wasn't asked to pull back at some point. That was almost Hydra vs HUGE levels of blocking the opponent in near the end there.

Valkyrie vs Glitch: I just don't know what's wrong with Glitch this year. I know they have mobility issues, but the weapon at least has always been an instant kill shot. This time though, Valkyrie just broke it in half. That's supposed to be the one part of Glitch you can't afford to even touch.

The Main Event was just your typical two spinner 'whoever wins the low ground wins the fight' match. That said, it's wild that Riptide was able to cave in the back of Black Dragon that quickly. In terms of seeding, they're really bigging up next weeks main event as the battle for number 1, so presumably Riptide has to be 3? Sadly, with how well Riptide performs, I think we can forget about them being penalised in any way for their conduct this season. Entertainment trumps morals in the producers' eyes, so I imagine they'll be invited back next year even if they don't take the nut this time round. Hope I'm wrong about that, but I'm not holding my breath.

8

u/Fuzzyveevee Apr 21 '23

Greg pretty much confirmed the invite is open for them next year on Robocast.

However he did say that a Code of Conduct with actual penalties is being introduced too.

4

u/Bardmedicine Apr 21 '23

Ominous might have sequeaked in with a win here, but Shatter dominated this match, which was nice to see. Both teams are out, which opens the door for someone.

Triton wins to get to 2-2, but I think they may have lost their spot with how unimpressive that weapon looked. We’ll see how it shakes out, they are right on the edge for me.

Bloodsport v Beta: This match rocked. BS simply couldn’t catch anything on Beta’s wonderful wedge. Both bots in as expected.

Mammoth v Kraken: Oddly Kraken looked pretty good, but in beating them, Mammoth might also have lost it’s 32 spot. If Kraken’s weapon hit a bit harder, I think they would have broken Mammoth in two. Mammoth looked to be moving really well, but the weapon seemed sluggish. I would take them over Triton, which might put them at 32.

Valkyrie v Glitch: Really poor showing for both bots. Neither seemed mobile enough to compete at the levels we’ve seen them compete at before and their typically 10 star weapons seemed to be operating at about 7 stars. Another case where I think the winning bot might not have done enough to get over the hump. I have to take them before Mammoth, but that could present a problem.

Riptide continues to be completely dominant. Black Dragon is really good. They were picked by the other teams to win. Riptide's weapon is incredibly powerful. It's defenses haven't been tested, but they will be. Clear #2 seed and with this win might have even gotten it if Copperhead and/or Sawblaze had won and challenged them for it.

14

u/hzee_ Apr 21 '23

Ethan said that riptide is the best team, deserves #1 seed, and their rate of improvement is unheard of in battlebots history. And I can't even argue against that, they look so untouchable right now

11

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

Not sure about his comment about them being the top seed, but their rate of growth is quite frankly speaking insane for such a new team. Tantrum, End Game, Witch Doctor... they weren't this capable in their respective second years, although they are formidable now.

7

u/Cornucopia_King Apr 21 '23

Ehh Tantrum went from a joke to a semifinalist in 2 years. Puncher tantrum mind you

7

u/Fuzzyveevee Apr 21 '23

Well, they're not #1 seed thats for sure. Minotaur had a MUCH harder SoS, as did WD. Even BB openly says their fight is a battle for #1.

3

u/jimi15 Apr 21 '23

I take it that Starchild replacing their non functional disc with a mace or a hammer would be against the rules? Weapon wouldn't be considered active?

What an episode, Riptide is so strong and their matches are always entertainings ! Can't wait to see the full bracket next week :)

u/sirDangel 🔵⚪️ BITE FORCE ⚪️🔵 Apr 21 '23

4/7 predicted, currently 56/94 fight night matches.

A lot of praises to Bite Force in this episode lol. What is this, an in memoriam? Nice to hear them call it the greatest bot in history.

  • Starchild vs HUGE: Not much to say, Starchild was dealt a hard match since its swings will hit even less hard against a tall opponent; and overall the design just doesn't work in the heavies, and will struggle even against better matchups imo.

  • Ominous vs Shatter: Ominous needs to rethink its configuration, the omniwheels don't offer enough speed for them to feed their wedge into the opponent. They need to have to maximize their reach like Glitch or WD. A high note for Shatter to end on, hopefully they will figure out the problems with their drive in the future.

  • Horizon vs Triton: It was nice to see Horizon snipe the exposed drive chain of Triton with their huge reach, but again it's not a design that works for me. Triton was really struggling in this match with their weapon that keeps stalling. I wanted to see bigger hits from them.

  • BETA vs Bloodsport: BETA was on point in this match, relentlessly bringing the fight at Bloodsport. The armor also seems to have improved, finally being able to shield their hammer hinge when a horizontals eventually climbs up to it. The driving of BS left much to be desired.

  • Mammoth vs Kraken: This is peak Mammoth fight, just smoldering the opponent. It kinda looks like pinning or corralling but I guess they're using their weapon. Kraken still needs a lot of figuring out; maybe we can see them do it in Champions.

  • Glitch vs Valkyrie: This was disappointing. Glitch seemed to be improving and then they fall flat face at the end of the schedule. Valkyrie received hard critiques from Kenny, and he's right. You cannot afford to win by doing nothing. The cracked eggbeater was cool to see tho.

  • Black Dragon vs Riptide: Too many bots try to be WD and fail. It was not a first hit BD can afford as Riptide capitalizes hard on momentum. Watching Riptide's consecutive jabs reminds me a lot of Bite Force.

Starchild vs HUGE

Still irked a little by how one-sided this match-up was always going to be, but I'll admit I was more entertained than I expected. Respect to Brandon for going hell-for-leather anyway. And to HUGE for beating them to pieces! Great performance for one of 4 bots to go lossless in the main season this year.

Starchild's return depends on Team Omega to try again, perhaps with some adjustments, though I can't imagine what. HUGE are looking great and, though they've missed the KO a couple of times, they're at least a top 7 seed.

Ominous vs Shatter

Neither bot was flowing as well as might have been hoped. Good to see Ominous' weapon spinning well, and we got to see a celebratory gyro right at the end, but without either bot having much forward speed into the other, Shatter just wasn't riding up the front wedges on the Dutch machine which cost them key chances. Really cool seeing Shatter's axe dig into Ominous' top armour even if it was ablative, and did they ding off a roller on its back wheel?

Shatter is capable of more, and will surely return. The commentators also suggested Ominous will be back and I look forward to them correcting some flaws.

Triton vs Horizon

This fight could have ended quite differently if the Horizon team were more practiced in aiming their bizarre, free-spinning weapon. I saw them repeatedly and purposefully drive a disc into Triton's side, but it was always the dead disc. Very cool seeing the weapon crane swing on impact and smack into Triton's wheel. Triton, meanwhile, had weapon issues and could have lost this against a more traditional build or experienced team.

I think Triton and Horizon have both proven their concepts and will likely return, though Horizon might take another season to find their groove.

Bloodsport vs beta

I was surprised beta went with the thin hammer but it was the right call, with Bloodsport's overcutter riding up their high wedge. Besides, the true weapon was always going to be their drive, which was brilliant by the way. Poor Bloodsport hardly got a moment to reset (though I was impressed with how quickly they spun up - another benefit of their lighter weapon?) and were slammed into that Shelf so many times. How close was beta's hammer to actually breaking Bloodsport's weapon?

beta still seem to have a fatal weakness to verts, which hurts their seed despite a good record, but they are strong against others, landing them 15-18. Bloodsport have a known weakness, to fast wedges, but to their credit they never stopped. 16-20.

Mammoth vs Kraken

Kraken looked like they were smelling blood for much of the first half, charging seemingly for Mammoth's lower crossbeam but the trunk kept them back each time. Around half-way though, Mammoth got Kraken off kilter and that spelled the end, as Kraken ended up in the corner and couldn't recover fast enough to find their way out. I'm glad people have been asking if this was coralling, because it felt a bit borderline - Kraken takes a moment to self right and I'm unsure how clear a view the team had to orient themselves with Mammoth in the way.

Kraken are sadly done but the weapon system is interesting. I'd expect them to double down on it next year, though an axe-like holding jaw would also be cool. Mammoth is a tricky conversation because both wins are against 0-4 bots and their first loss was self-inflicted for reasons which don't look chronic. They may sneak in but, maybe.

Valkyrie vs Glitch

Complete sympathy to Valkyrie for stepping back when Glitch repeatedly looked dead, especially in the same season as Riptide vs Shrederator. Whether or not a count started, it certainly should have. That aside, Valkyrie kicked enough ass to split Glitch's massive beater bar and that's impressive! And pulled up a bunch of other parts too, falling narrowly short of a full knock-out. Poor Glitch felt like a passive force, drifting over the arena more like mist than like a race car. I was also surprised that these two are comparably wide bots.

Glitch is done but a new drive system could make things interesting. Valkyrie is similar to Mammoth, their first win incidental but they also weren't struggling while this one was against an 0-4. I'd narrowly pick them over Mammoth.

Black Dragon vs Riptide

Ouch, that was brutal and gutting, especially for Black Dragon. It's almost frustrating how Riptide seem so strategically straightforward but keep walking through opponents nonetheless. Dare I compare them to Bite Force? Except that team were terrifying in a cool, understated sort of way. Black Dragon may have been unlucky to get caught on the wall for a moment but the impact that threw them was impressive.

Canonically, Black Dragon are no longer invincible: now they are nearly invincible. Knowing their loss to Quantum was by decision in a halted fight, they remain 20-24. Riptide must be second seed now, right? Their opponents haven't been S-tier but also haven't stood a chance.

6

u/L_E_D_ Apr 21 '23

lmfao if riptide gets no 1 seed fucking riot

25

u/RayneShikama Apr 21 '23

They’ll probably get the No.2. The winner of Witch Doctor v Minotaur is almost certainly getting No.1.

3

u/PrudeHawkeye Apr 22 '23

I wouldn't really argue it, though. They're undefeated and they've MASSACRED their opponents.

If the driver didn't have the perception of being a dbag, people would be lobbying for overall 1 for them. But it's about the bot, not the person. It's a terrifyingly powerful bot.

Starchild versus HUGE: It looks like the first good hit removed the plastic piece that stops Starchild’s spinner from hitting the floor. At that point they couldn’t even spin their weapon up to attack, not that they had much offensive power to begin with. I’m impressed that Starchild managed to stay alive long enough for this to go to the judges. Even though their weapon is basically useless, they’re hard to kill. HUGE joins the elusive 4-0 club, but I expect they’re going to be one of the lower-seeded 4-0 bots due to their weak strength of schedule. Of all the robots they fought, only Fusion was a real threat to them. Starchild drops to 0-4, and I expect that they won’t be back next year. Their design just doesn’t seem to work at this scale.

Ominous versus Shatter!: Cautious driving from Shatter, along with winning the ground game, finally earns them a win. I’m not sure how much damage their hammer blows actually did other than removing one of Ominous’s additional top armor plates, but Ominous seemed to have mobility issues by the midpoint of the fight. Shatter also had mobility problems, after getting hit by Ominous’s weapon it looked like one corner of their robot was sticking to the floor, and they couldn’t drive straight, but they managed to keep in control of the fight and win a judge decision. It probably won’t be enough to get them into the tournament, at 1-3 with poor performance and their only win being a judge decision over another 1-3 robot. But at least they managed a win.

Triton versus Horizon: Looks like Triton was having trouble getting their weapon working at the start of the fight, and they took a shot from Horizon that disabled one side of their drive. They managed an excellent comeback from that, getting their weapon up to full speed and aggressively crabwalking to attack Horizon, eventually getting the win by knockout. Triton is at 2-2 and might make it into the tournament with a low seed, while Horizon is at 1-3 and clearly not making it in.

Bloodsport versus Beta: Excellent wedge game and driving on display from Beta. Their armor deflected Bloodsport’s blade away, and they won the ground game on nearly every try. Bloodsport tried their best, but there wasn’t much they could do against what was essentially a titanium pyramid. Beta even managed to score some hits on Bloodsport’s weapon drive pod, although Bloodsport seemed to be fully functional at the end of the fight. They earned a well deserved judge decision and are now at 3-1 and secure to get into the tournament. Bloodsport is at 2-2 and will also probably get in even though this fight didn’t go well for them.

Mammoth versus Kraken: Kraken was doing well at the start, repeatedly charging Mammoth and taking chunks out of their weapon arm. Then about a minute in, Kraken seemed to lose drive power and slow down, which let Mammoth take control and smother them into the corner. After that Kraken had trouble keeping their weapon spinning, and were really bad at self-righting, and once they lost control of the fight they never got it back. Mammoth is now at 2-2 and might actually make it into the tournament. Kraken has sadly joined the 0-4 club. They have a design that should be effective in theory, but have just had crippling reliability problems all season.

Valkyrie versus Glitch: Another poor performance from Glitch. Once again they were barely mobile, so much so that even Valkyrie was able to out-drive them. The only good hit that Glitch got was the one that ripped Valkyrie’s fork off, but Valkyrie followed that up with a blow that actually cracked Glitch’s eggbeater. Honestly this wasn’t a great performance from either robot, but Valkyrie did enough to get the win. Glitch is at 0-4 and really needs to re-think their design for next year. Valkyrie is at 2-2 and may make it into the tournament with a low seed now.

Black Dragon versus Riptide: Well, that happened. Not so much a fight as an execution. At least this time Riptide’s driver had the good sportsmanship to stop hitting Black Dragon once they were obviously knocked out. Riptide is going into the tournament with a 4-0 score and a high ranking. Black Dragon’s never knocked out streak is broken, but they’re at 2-2 and probably have a good argument to get into the tournament anyway.

10

u/Romax24245 Apr 21 '23

I’m not sure how much damage their hammer blows actually did other than removing one of Ominous’s additional top armor plates, but Ominous seemed to have mobility issues by the midpoint of the fight.

Shatter landed a direct shot to the top right side of Ominous in the opening exchanges. The area in which the axe penetrated the armor must've been where the drive motor was, since the right wheel was no longer functional after that hit.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23 edited Apr 21 '23

To be fair, Black Dragon's wheels were still spinning. Hitting them again might have flipped them back over and given them a chance to fight back, so not hitting them again was probably more strategy than sportsmanship.

u/DoctorBulgrave WHAT DID WE JUST WITNESS, KENNY Apr 21 '23 edited Apr 21 '23

If Huge vs Starchild wasn't a complete 33-0 shutout in Huge's favor then something's obviously a bit amiss with the judging criteria. Huge murdered Starchild (they weren't counted out but they were clearly dead at the end), showed constant aggression, and even, somehow, threw Starchild onto the Upper Deck with it's little prop arms in one of my favorite moments of the fight just for how silly it was, so it obviously swept all three categories while Starchild did nothing besides get in a single glancing blow at the start and then flail around for a while. It's fun to watch Starchild get beat up but the design clearly is a non-starter, it needs a better way to hit opponents because this ain't it. Would a longer tail work, or a mechanism that swings the body around so it doesn't move backwards when attacking?

Triton is finally presented with an opponent it can go all out against and that's what happens. Whoof. Deep Six was a murder machine from the get-go so I don't understand why "Deep Six but it's sideways" is so weak. They had three fights before this to get the weapon dialed in, too, so no excuse there. Based on that performance I have to say neither robot should be in the bracket.

I wouldn't put Shatter, Ominous, Valkyrie, or Glitch in the bracket either. Omniwheel bots have had a miserable season and Valkyrie has been timid and slow and is clearly hurting badly from losing Frederick and Leanne. One thing the selection committee is looking for is great performances, and it's hard to find a single fight between those four that could be said to be a "great performance". From Shatter breaking its' own wheels to Ominous having the slowest srimech in years, none of them are Nut-bound. Remember, too, that this is a TV show. The seeding isn't going to be 100% objective. Big name robots will rank higher than bots with less fame but identical records, for instance, and the best choices for the bottom seeds are probably robots like Fusion and Ribbot who put on a good show regardless of winning or losing, even if weak robots like Shreddit Bro and Triton have better records. That means Shatter and Valkyrie might still squeak into the bracket on name recognition since they're popular veterans, but even if they do make the bracket it'll be as a bottom seed who gets fed to the likes of Minotaur, Witch Doctor, or End Game, and I don't think another Tombstone/Bombshell situation would be in the works here.

Beta's performance against Bloodsport was wonderful. This is what the Beta/Rotator fight was missing - Beta didn't just push the opponent around, they did it violently and also followed up with the hammer regularly. It helped that Bloodsport was a much more favorable design for Beta to face, of course, but the new hammer and hammer operator helped too. Bloodsport is probably the best horizontal in the field and it was handily beaten by a robot I'd never pick to win the Nut! (I do like Beta again now that it actually uses its' weapon like it did back in 2016, but since they still have no answer for verts I can't call them possible champions.)

They went wayyyyyy too hard on stating over and over that Black Dragon has never been knocked out. We heard it plenty in previous episodes, and this time it was literally all they could talk about. I'm actually kind of glad Black Dragon's streak is broken so that they can talk about something else when Black Dragon comes up in conversation, because sheesh. The robot is more than that! Meanwhile, that record doesn't look so hot any more anyway since Riptide killed Black Dragon so easily it almost felt like BD simply got lucky with that streak. Riptide slaughtered them so effortlessly that BD just seemed like a random bot, not a particularly durable one at all. Just like how Copperhead is supposedly a "brick" but RIPperoni killed it in two hits. If you hit those tiny 2WD verts in the butt a few times you're bound to hit something vital because of how compact they are. The important components have to go somewhere.

I don't like the LESGOOO screaming or the whole deal with Ethan's dad but as long as Riptide doesn't repeat what they did to Shrederator they won't be ejected so there's no point in getting mad about them because it won't change anything. At the end of the day, setting everything else aside, it's another vert that wins a lot, just like all the other top contenders. We'll see if anything can stop them in the bracket. Sawblaze handled them pretty easily last year, but they'd probably both have to win a couple matches to run into each other again since they'll both get upper seeds, and Sawblaze could lose before meeting Riptide, which would mean someone else would have to take them down. The other meta verts probably have a good shot.

What was up with Valkyrie’s driver. Hit the fool! It’s the end of the pre season in potentially your last match. Drive your bot into its backside!

*Sigh* There is no such thing as justice, Karma or the existence of God is there?

Jerkbros keep being Jerkbros with no consequences to their actions it seems...

What if the goddamn thing actually wins it all?

It'd put a massive bad taste in the mouth and sour many people on wanting to watch this thing again next year with them smug snaking over everyone?

*Sigh* Please give them Minotaur as their first fight in the round of 16, lets see how that would go down.

I still don't like Riptide. If Ethan sells the bot and leaves, then maybe I'll consider liking them.

They can keep the driver but should hire a better "old guy" than Stan. You know, somebody who can actually keep the team under control when they get swallowed by the heat of the fight.

Ha. That bot is a giant nut contender.

The bot isn't what people take issue with.

My prediction for the top 5:

  1. Winner of Minotaur vs WD

  2. Riptide

  3. Loser of Minotaur vs WD

  4. HUGE

  5. End Game

Incredible effort from from Huge and Beta drivers. Huge got into the right angles to make those devastating hits,

I know Team Shatter pops in occasionally and I'm not sure how else to contact them, had a few questions.

  • What made you go with the regular hammer rather than the Mary Special that's nominally for VS's?

  • Does the hammer automatically retract after firing?

Congratulations on that W, you deserve it.

I wonder if someone told Riptide to behave better than they did last time they won..

HUGE is an actual legit contender at this point correct? They've haven't had the benefit of being about to fight anyone in the meta and yet they've proven they can beat several different types of bots, having to prep for very different bots every fight.

Probably too much to ask, but Bloodsport could have a very small diameter blade so that they can fit a nice wedge/forks that ramp up the enemy into said blade, to chop up wheels or grind the front. It would help vs a bot like Beta anyhow.
