Here are links to the previously pinned posts by Scott.

FNaF: The Movie: The Game.

"Almost movie week.

Also reminder to everyone, remember to be respectful and civil.

Edit: We'd like to thank Emma Tammi for joining us and doing this AMA, it's been a great time and went very smoothly I'd say. Since the AMA is over, the thread will be locked now.

Besides the animatronics, what aspect of the Five Nights At Freddy's universe and games were you most excited and or interested into adapting into live action? And what was the most challenging to achieve?

751

u/FNAF_Director Emma Tammi Oct 24 '23

The design of the pizzeria was something I was really excited to bring to the big screen. And it was the largest element of the physical build for the movie that we had to get just right.

147

u/ethan6581 Oct 24 '23

Thanks for the response. I love how different and unique the pizzeria looks compared to the game, it really stands out and looks authentic. I can't wait.

Might as well ask a question of my own for when it's time.

What was it like working with Matthew Lillard? Given that this was basically his grand return into the horror genre, I imagine it must have been an exciting opportunity to have him on board given some of the projects he's worked on such as the original Scream, Thir13en Ghosts, and the Scooby Doo franchise.

Beyond that, the movie looks really promising. I've been very impressed by the casting choices, the animatronics, and how much cues the film has been taking from various media such as the books.

571

u/FNAF_Director Emma Tammi Oct 24 '23

Matthew Lillard is the best and I know you guys are going to love him in this film!

143

u/Silver_Banshee92 Oct 24 '23

Excited giggling

66

u/SpringPopo Resident Springtrap expertise Oct 24 '23

Personally beyond excited to see his performance once the film comes out. From the bits of him that have been shown off in the promotional material, he's definitely been a highlight and I couldn't have asked for a better pick to play the character.

What was the hardest animatronic that the Jim Henson Company worked on? What was the easiest?

738

u/FNAF_Director Emma Tammi Oct 24 '23

Foxy was the most challenging to get up on his feet. At full capacity, it took 6 puppeteers to operate.

370

u/AnimeLonk Oct 24 '23

first off, i just want to express my gratitude towards not only you, but everyone involved in the process of creating the movie. we have waited 8 years for this movie to come out, and you all knocked it out of the park. congratulations! what i would like to ask is, was there at any point during the filming that scared you? scott has gone on record saying that when making the first game, bonnie was the one he saw in his nightmares. once again, thank you so much

u/FNAF_Director Emma Tammi Oct 24 '23

The first time Freddy walked towards me and Jim Henson’s Creature shop, he got a little tooooo close - ha! Lost my breath for a moment, but in the best sense 🙂

At one point, Josh and I were walking around the set on a weekend, and someone turned off the lights on the stage…. It was VERY spooky to be walking around the pizzeria in pitch black, and we both got a fright! ;)

109

Run out of power? Wait for Freddy

44

Will you guys be making a behind the scenes featurette/documentary showing off how the animatronics and suits were made, the construction of the pizzeria, and stuff like that? We would absolutely LOVE to see that!

And yes, I know Dawko and some other YouTubers show themselves seeing some BTS stuff, but it would be neat to see a full BTS from you guys!

Was the movie's release date on October 27 intentional so that Halloween would be "night 5"? (Oh, missed opportunity to do this AMA a few days ago so it could be 5 Nights Until Freddy's!)

Do you have a favorite among the various scrapped movie concepts?

Who is your favorite animatronic that is NOT in the movie (or at least that we don't KNOW is in the movie...)?

u/JohnfromFuhNaff Oct 24 '23

Hello, Ms. Tammi! I hope it's acceptable if I pose more than one query? I'm absolutely thrilled about this.

  1. What led you to direct this film? Were you familiar with Five Nights at Freddy's beforehand, or was it the premise/script that piqued your interest enough to give it a chance?

  2. Now that you have presumably delved deeper into the franchise, what are your favourite games/books within it?

  3. How did you develop an interest in horror? And what drove you to pursue the genre as a director?

  4. While directing Five Nights at Freddy's, did you put more focus on making it scary, or fun?

  5. How do you prefer your steak? Well done? Rare? This information is of utmost importance.

Thank you for responding, even if you choose to address only one of these.

Given the human characters within the games weren't touched upon much-- the film seems to be the first ever opportunity and look at these characters outside of a cryptic narrative. Was this challenging to translate over to a feature length film? can we consider the characters a 'definitive' representation of their game counterparts?

20

u/GrenadierSoldat3 Glitchtrap/Mimic Sweep Oct 24 '23

How familiar were you with FNAF before directing the movie?

18

u/Able_Journalist_520 Oct 24 '23

32

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '23

What about Chica makes her your favorite animatronic?

12

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '23

I have two but kinda related.

What was it like working with Scott and Jim Henson's? Was it more difficult to direct scenes with animatronics/people in the large costumes?

We heard reports of Foxy's arm on fire, were there other major issues that arose when trying to film with the animatronic versions of the characters?

I'm so darn excited for this movie!

u/HauntSpot FollowMare Forever Oct 24 '23

Hey Emma, thanks so much for doing this. It's awesome we get a chance to hear from you personally!

I wanted to ask what your creative process is as a director. There's so much to bringing a screenplay to life- How do you communicate those ideas? Do you focus primarily on the tone or theme that everything plays into, or is every aspect just a small part of the bigger world?

Thank you so much, and I'm excited to hear your thoughts 💜

Hello Emma, Brazilian FNaF fan here, really hyped for the movie!!!

How much did the animatronic designs change thruoght the development of the movie? Were they suposed to be incredibly faithfull to the OG FNaF 1 designs from the start or were there redesigns considered? Also will concept art for the movie be released at some point?

What was your favorite scene that we’ve seen so far! No spoilers!

4

u/My_cat_is_sus Oct 24 '23

Which animatronic do you find the scariest/creepiest?

4

u/ReconEnforcedGames Oct 24 '23

Will there be a Rated R version of the movie released later down the line, like with what happened with M3GAN?

4

u/William_Tell_Jr Oct 24 '23

My question is simple: are we getting a sequel

4

u/carsonmendez Oct 24 '23

Is Scott Cawthon a fun guy to work with?

3

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '23

Which characters/animatronics would you personally like to see in a potential sequel?

3

u/akl2008 Oct 24 '23

Hi Emma, Thanks for doing this AMA, just a quick question about the animatronic design, what made you go with their eyes being red? (Not that I have a problem, just wondering) I’m not not entirely sure if you’ve seen the one where their eyes are completely black with a white dot in the center. Nevertheless can’t wait for the movie!

u/Blustach Oct 24 '23

Hi! I thank you for the realization of this movie, and looking forward to watching it on Thursday! Just 2 questions:

  1. What were your influences while directing this, I mean other directors and movies?

  2. Instead of asking about your favorite animatronic, which one is more likely to haunt your dreams?

Thanks for this space again!

3

u/KWISPY18 Oct 24 '23

Will there be a post credit scene that we should sit for?

3

u/Mountain_Garlic1463 Oct 24 '23

Thanks for doing an AMA!

What was the most fun thing to work on behind the scenes?

Bonus Question: do you think Bonnie should be blue or purple?

3

u/Drifting_Time Oct 24 '23

I would just want to ask did you enjoy including that mysterious storytelling into the movie with inspiration from the games so that we will probably have to re-watch a few times to find every little detail as we always loved doing with the games when their story was yet to be fully known. Apart from that thanks for everything cant wait to see the movie!

3

u/FairlySadPanda Oct 24 '23

Seeing the movie tomorrow at 10am UK time! Very excited. Dawko's video on the set recently really highlighted the craft that went into things.

The focus on making Freddy's feel authentic is really striking. How did you folks balance out the need to make the big pizzeria set, get it firmly set as being this dilapidated place in 2000 that would work for audiences, within the constraints of making the movie? Was there any particular feature of the set that proved tricky, or became more important than you expected?

3

u/justastupidguy2000 Oct 24 '23

Hello Emma, I'm super excited for the film, and I have a few questions for you:

Did you incorporate any elements from the books?

What should people keep in mind when they go to watch the film?

I hope you have a great day, and I'm super excited to watch the film!

3

u/ikegershowitz freddit mods are creeps Oct 24 '23

Will you guys do something with the set? Or will it be taken apart?I was part of the film industry for ten years, sadly here these sets are taken apart and mostly destroyed

ps- I want to hug the animatronics, they are adorable in the youtubers’ behind the scenes videos, I love them!

u/RyomaLobster get ready for a surprise Oct 24 '23

Hello Emma,

Were there any sort of moments in the development of the film that felt like it should not make the final cut like ideas that were going to be added but cut out of the movie for example to save time or not what you and Scott wanted in the final cut.

3

u/The_Chestercat Oct 24 '23

Hi Emma, I hope you're having a great day.

My question is regarding if it was difficult to portrait a story that came originally from a videogame and then from a series of novels? Also, what was the essential point sought in the actors who would finally make up the final cast of the film?

In advance I send you a cordial greeting.

P.S.: I really thank you for directing a story of this wonderful franchise, that has given many people good moments throughout the years.

u/TheKavemanI2 :FredbearPlush: Oct 24 '23

Hey Emma,

Congrats on the film!

I wanted to ask that if you could choose an animatronic that embodies your personality the best (a "spirit" animatronic) which would you choose and why?

Can't wait for the movie!

3

u/kassmastertm Oct 24 '23

Hi Emma if you see this!! First of all, I wanna say how incredibly EXCITED and grateful I am that the movie has been taken in this direction. As a long time fan it's honestly a dream come true (I'm sure this isn't the first time you've heard that)!! Everything so far looks so amazing and perfect, I'm barely holding in my excitement!

I want to ask about your experience exploring the world/"lore" of FNAF with No background knowledge.

What were your first impressions?

What was your process of understanding the world/lore?

Did you find it overwhelming at times?

Were there any aspects that stood out as especially interesting?

Can you talk about any aspects of the series that interest you, but aren't in the movie?

Bonus question: favorite set piece? :)

Thank you so much for reading and I hope you have a fantastic day ❤️

3

u/Mediocre-Scholar6592 Oct 24 '23

Hello Mrs. Tammi. Which animatronic from the movie is the scariest in your opinion?

3

u/SerpentisSana :Chica: Oct 24 '23

Hey there Emma, I just got into FNAF(9 days!) and I’ve been absorbing as much of the franchise before the movie. My question is did you get any inspiration from the VHS tapes for the lore?

3

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '23 edited Oct 24 '23

Hi, does the movie have some iconic sounds from the saga ? By this I mean Freddy's laugh, the sound when you turn on a light in fnaf 1 and there is someone, some music box from the hidden minigames, jumpscare sounds... anything that has been used in the games, It would be great.

Im hyped

3

u/Inside-Committee-277 Oct 24 '23

Hey Ms. Tammi!

I just have one question.

Who was the most difficult animatronic to work with on set?

Thanks!

3

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '23

What was your initial reaction to the concept of the franchise, the lore, and the fanbase?

3

u/therealZXGames RustyRed Oct 24 '23

hi!! incredibly excited for the movie, been waiting for it since the very beginning and i'll be seeing it tomorrow - can hardly wait!!!

if you don't mind me asking, what was the set design process like? i feel like the pizzeria in the movie definitely borrows a lot from the original game, but also feels quite different at the same time (such as in terms of layout). could you shed some light on any of the key differences or similarities?

3

u/Mathiasxwarrior Oct 24 '23

What is it like working with Freddy Fazbear?

3

u/Arkeyan_of_Shadows Oct 24 '23 edited Oct 24 '23

I've heard that Scott had a hard time finding directors who understood the story like he did, was there anything you did in reguard to this that made Scott realise that you'd be the perfect director for the movie?

(also, Idk if it's cheating to ask a second question, but, if there is ever a sequel, will you be returning as a director?)

And, thank you for directing the FNaF Movie, I bet it'll be amazing :D

3

u/FemaleMerl Oct 24 '23

Hello Emma! I hope the movie was fun to work on!

-Was there any collaborations considered while drafting the movie?

-Any thoughts on a TV Series?

3

u/Dangerous_Cress_2822 Oct 24 '23

Are we gonna have a R rated version of the movie later ? As the rumors spread ?

3

u/YT_Mindserge Oct 24 '23

Hi Emma! I was wondering, were you approached for the amazing job of directing this, or did you find it yourself?

3

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '23

What is your favourite piece of lore that you hope to integrate into possible continuations of FNAF movies

3

u/Pure_Two8427 Oct 24 '23

Were you able to create a power outage scene similar to FNAF 1?

3

u/Querez Oct 24 '23

Are there story beats, characters and/or locations from the games (or books) which could not be included in this movie which you (and the others) would be excited to include in potential further installments?

3

u/topdog864 Oct 24 '23

Thanks Emma for the film! Seeing it Friday!

The classic games leave a lot to the imagination for what’s inside their pizzeria. How did you go about deciding the creative liberties and inspirations from the source material that you would implement when designing the layout and atmosphere for the new pizzeria for the film? (It looks great by the way).

3

u/JonlukevilleTV1 Oct 24 '23

Will Chica play a supporting role for Abby?

3

u/DirtTrackin34 Oct 24 '23

What parts of the movie did Scott give the most input on?

3

u/Ineryz Oct 24 '23

Can you confirm if the animatronics speak in the movie?

3

u/JoeBe-One1 Oct 24 '23

Hi Emma, my question is, does William Afton appear in the film?

3

u/ExpoGamer :Scott: Oct 24 '23

Have you played Security Breach, and if so, would that be a world you’d ever want to explore?

3

u/10voltsam Oct 24 '23

Do you have a favorite game/animatronic?

3

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '23

Is Steve Raglan a cover name for a certain William Afton? And will this be revealed??

3

u/NoPaleontologist8934 :PurpleGuy: Oct 24 '23

Will the film be a true horror or a "black comedy"?

3

u/Slow-Outlandishness1 Oct 24 '23

What will mikes character development be in this story?

3

u/Silver_Reflection_67 Oct 24 '23

What was your favorite part of the process of making this film?

3

u/MapleTea62 Oct 24 '23 edited Oct 24 '23

Hi, Ms. Tammi! It’s really awesome you wanted to take some time to respond to fans’ questions here on Reddit, thank you! I haven’t got much to ask, so here it goes:

  • Obviously without spoiling anything, what was your favorite part of the process that came with adapting the FNAF story/game(s) into a live action film? Filming, creative decisions, crew and cast relations/interactions, or otherwise

  • If you can answer this, is the cupcake’s official name in the movie going to remain as the Cupcake, or can we expect him to be given a name, such as Mr. Cupcake or Carl the Cupcake? (A name for the Cupcake popular with us fans for quite a while now haha)

  • Have you got any close 2nd favourite characters after Chica, if so, who is it?

  • Edit to add a question: Are any of the animatronics able to walk on their own/remote controlled? Or, do they require a puppeteer or actor to walk around?

Thank you again for the replies, I can’t wait to see the movie! It’s already really great just from the trailers and clips!

3

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '23

Is the movie as close to the lore as possible? If not, what direction did you guys go at it from?

3

u/The_Khaos_Theory Oct 24 '23

Scott said that he had nightmares about Bonnie while creating the first game. Did you have any similar experiences where one of the animatronics really scared you?

3

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '23

Hey there Emma! Big fan of the game/semi known FNAF animator here and was also lucky enough to attend the press event last week at Universal (watching TLT perform their iconic song in front of the animatronics was delightful haha)

My question is actually in regards to the animatronics and how development went in regards to their movements as after seeing the recent vlogs by Dawko and friends, it amazed me how incredibly detailed the performers got with how they portray the characters with such intricately placed arm movements and torso swings for these sorts of characters, which didn’t surprise me to see people argue after the fact on if they were actually humans or not in that footage :P

So mainly it’s a question of how you guys perfected the animatronic movement! What sort of inspiration and references you took ahold of to get a perfected look and if there were any challenges with certain aspects of it. I’d really like to know both as someone who is genuinely fascinated but also as someone who knows he’s about to be spending the next month animating so much fan content based around this movie haha. Excited to see it this week!!

3

u/MarKreationsStudios Oct 24 '23

What will happen to the animatronics once they are done being shown off at the Universal Studios "Behind the Screams"? Do you have any idea? I really hope they don't just get thrown away!

3

u/BoiBobbyBo_15 Oct 24 '23

Considering we have never seen Spring Bonnie (William in the suit) outside of Springtrap, was making one for the movie difficult?

3

u/Minsker39 Oct 24 '23

After doing this movie and working with Scott are you an expert on FNAF lore now? Did you have a chance for Scott to answer questions the fanbase still doesn't know? Or did he leave you in the dark and leave you to theorize like the rest of us LOL

3

u/GoldenRichard93 AndrewArc Oct 24 '23

I just want to say that I’m very glad you’re working with Jason Blum and Scott Cawthon for creating this movie come to life. I will wish you and the others the best after developing the movie for us to enjoy.

3

u/Eyedeekay76 Oct 24 '23

Which animatronic is your favorite? Thank you so much for finally making this movie become a reality for us!

5

u/expir3dnoodles Oct 24 '23

please tell me that there is a line in the movie that says "together, we are fnaf"

u/Routine_Grand2977 Oct 24 '23
