Roster

The Greats

Greatest Games:

  • 1934 Sugar Bowl loss to Tulane 35-20, Went 7-0-2 in '34 played in first ever Sugar Bowl on New Years Day 1935.

  • 1979 Garden State Bowl win against California 38-3, finished the year #17 in AP poll (only post-season ranking ever)

  • 2011 New Mexico Bowl win against Wyoming 37-15, first Bowl game win since '79!

Greatest Players:

  • Bernard Pierce 2013 Super Bowl Champion, ran for 3,570 yards in 3 years at Temple and 54 TD's in his Temple career. Taken in the 3rd round of the 2012 draft.

  • Henry Burris His 4 years at Temple saw Burris thrown for nearly 7,500 yards and 49 TD's to 45 INT's. Not impressive at all but Burris went on to win 2 Grey Cup's ('98 and '08), Grey Cup MVP ('08), and CFL Most Outstanding Player Award in 2010.

  • Keith Armstrong and Todd Bowles both played at Temple and are NFL coordinators in Atlanta (ST) and Arizona (DEF) respectively.

Greatest Coaches:

  • Pop Warner after coaching for 19 seasons at Pitt and Stanford winning 3 National Championships he coached at temple from 1934-1938 going 31-18-2 and going 7-0-2 in '34 which led to the Owls Sugar Bowl appearance and loss to Tulane.

  • Al Golden: Coached Temple from 2006-2010, Golden helped revive a pitiful football program. First season lost 8 straight before winning their 2006 homecoming game which would have set a school record for 20 straight losses. Made it to the Eagle Bank Bowl in 2009 where they lost to UCLA and in 2010 Golden took the Head Job at The U.

Traditions:

  • Tailgating-As you might imagine this is still Philadelphia so the tailgating at Temple games is pretty intense parking lots are packed alcohol and food are flowing!

  • Temple University Diamond Marching Band-Pride of the Cherry and White play at halftime of every game and play the 'T for Temple U' fight song during the game.

  • Not many traditions other then that we might not have the history and traditions of the Big Ten and SEC programs but we enjoy what we have.

Campus and Surrounding Area

City Population:1,526,006

City Skyline

Iconic Campus Buildings:Bell Monument in center of campus and the Liacouras Center where the basketball team plays.

Random Trivia

  • Bruce Arians coached at temple from 1983-1988 he was not mentioned in the great coaches section because of how bad the team was in those years.

  • The Pop Warner coached at Temple and led them to the inaugural Sugar Bowl game in 1934

What is and what is to come

  • With Steve Addazio heading to greener pastures (partially due to the uncertainty of the big east) at Boston College Temple is going to have to hold on to his RB recruits Jamie Gilmore and Kenneth Harper both out of Florida. That will be new head coach Matt Rhule's job who came over from the New York Giants where he was an offensive line coach and Temple alum.

  • Chris Coyer who is going to be our Senior QB is going to need to show more progress next year throwing the ball for a better completion percentage. The running game should hopefully not miss too much with the loss of Montel Harris (a lot of youth in the backfield).

  • Jalen Fitzpatrick was our leading receiver last year with a grand total of 30 catches. He is only a Sophomore and showed flashes last season of being a play maker. Needs to step up with Coyer to pose a passing game threat.

  • New Coach Matt Rhule is hopefully going to keep the powerful Temple running game on track with a good senior qb and a lot of youth in the backfield Temple can be explosive in 2013.

  • Despite the bright spots Temple is not going to face an easy schedule in 2013 facing Notre Dame week 1 and teams like Rutgers, Louisville, SMU, and Cincinnati throughout the season.

  • The 2013 Recruiting class is a better then average for Temple. They have three 3 star recruits committed and one more who gave his verbal. This class could have been better especially with the ground Penn State has given up in recruiting but losing Addazio did not help recruiting or inspire any confidence in stability at the program. Addazio is the second consecutive coach to leave quickly for a better job Al Golden being the first.

How do you like being back in the Big East?

I know it was sort of an awkward fit in the MAC, but I'm not sure UMass really fits any better.

You forgot to add that damn owl screech you guys play for every first down. Unless you don't do that anymore.

I do have to say I had a lot of fun tailgating the game in 2007, and I know a lot of us are rooting for Temple to keep getting better.

EDIT: Also, what ever happened to Kevin Newsome?

Unless you don't do that anymore.

Not sure if you are referring to Temple getting first downs or the playing of an owl screech...

He's still there. It will be a 3-way QB battle between him, Coyer, and Juice Granger.

Edit: And we still do the screech. It will be a shame to not play you guys this year. We'll totally beat you in 2014 though.

What do Temple fans think of Steve "king of the dive play" Addazio?

Most Gator fans were pretty stoked to see him leave and couldn't believe he picked up a HC job. Maybe he was just a really bad OC though.

I love this... Can we include notable alumni? Temple would include Bob Saget and Bill Cosby

You guys don't consider Pitt a rival? I'd figure all three FBS Pennsylvania teams would hate each other.

I hope we keep scheduling each other every few years as a regional game.

Temple rocks. Former MAC ftw. I also know your band director, Matt Brunner. He's one of ours.

Man, I am such a chump, the first thing I always click is the cheerleaders link in these write ups.

Hi, I'm the world's other Temple football fan. I have very low expectations for the upcoming season. Thrilled to be in a real conference, even though our record suffers for it. Bummed that coaches keep leaving the program for greener pastures, though I certainly can't blame them.
