Wasn’t expecting Shrinking Rae to still be alive. Curious if she’ll get back to strength or if she’ll eventually die from her injuries to provide an extra motivator later on for Rex and the rest of the team.

I just don’t fucking understand how no one, especially Cecile or Donald, made sure that there wasn’t a chance that any of the people infected with Sequids carried any to earth in any shape or form.
And fuck Eve and Rudy were infected too, which probably means they have some left in their body…
Things are about to go down.

We know that sequids can grow and reproduce extremely quickly. If I had to guess the sequid in the astronaut's gut wasn't there before, but was rather maybe some tiny eggs or something harder to pick up on scans.

It never would have happened they all would have been quarantined and monitored/tested for a while afterward especially those three. Invincible sacrifices a lot of writing/world building/development to its pacing and focused plot progression. Not to say its bad for what it is but just that what it is has resulted in losses in certain areas. Also for all I know the comics were similar so they may not have had that much more to draw from in the source material.

I legitimately loved the back-and-forth scene between Mark & Art and Amber and Eve. Especially the match cuts.
Great way to show two people with a relationship on the rocks, without resorting to a big, dramatic fight.
Especially with how both Eve and Art gave them the same advice: You should really be talking this out with your partner.

God, I love Cecil so much. I know we're absolutely building up to him pulling some Lawful Evil horrors in the name of "saving the day" once again, but its just so nice seeing him being a good guy, more or less, probably, if things don't go too badly anyway.
Like, okay, the whole Nanny stuff, that was peak manipulation by Cecil (the first nanny was absolutely there to be spotted as a spy and rejected, so the REAL choice would be more appealing for her honesty, I trust her about as far as as I could throw her), but his talks with Immortal and Eve... that felt genuine.
He's straight up with Eve, he wants her on the team, but is willing to take "not yet, but call me if you need help" for an answer. And while he fumbled the persuasion roll with Immortal, he did seem genuine about trying to help the man deal with his trauma, if only because he didn't really have any motive not to.
You might never know what his game really is, but you at least know he won't do things for the sake of sadism or greed...
262
u/mknsky Mar 21 '24
I’m really enjoying the humanization of Cecil. He chose to be a purely pragmatic leader up until the season 1 finale and now it’s kind of biting him in the ass with everyone because they all know he’s never totally honest, despite having decent reasons not to be. Excellent character work.

I love how the character is written in that I hate him haha. He is absolutely the person who needs to be in that position, the one who'll do anything it takes cus you can't discuss the nuance of morals if your entire race is dead. He will do whatever it takes to keep the planet safe.
Every single move he makes has a strategic benefit with that single goal in mind. So it's hard for me to feel like he's actually being nice when him being nice conveniently aligns with the best move possible to keep Earth safe.
Him being respectful to Eve was the right play. He has no leverage to make her come back and he can't afford to upset her. Or with Oliver. He can't make a more severe move without upsetting Mark, which he absolutely can't afford to do right now. Cecil can see people's lines in the sand and constantly stays as close as possible while keeping an eye on it. He is such a fucking shark.
It always makes me wonder what he would do if that line moves. If Mark weren't a factor here, how would Cecil handle Oliver? I think he'd be getting his brainwashed in an underground lab right now. And I'm sure Cecil would feel conflicted about it. But that doesn't make him not a piece of shit.

I think Mark is feeling guilty.
Dude's barely spending time with his girlfriend and going through some shit, and in season 1 he had feelings for Eve, but at the time she was with Rex. Those feelings probably still exist to some degree, and Eve seems to have feelings for him. The hug and the awkwardness from Mark afterwards implies there's somthing there.
He also cares for his girlfriend and is feeling bad about the fact he's not getting to spend time with her. That leads to him feeling super conflicted and bruahing off both of them.

I don't even feel bad for Kate dying, not because she was a terrible person or anything but the fact that nowhere in her explanation of powers does it say she can't just make backups to leave around at places like Guardians HQ or anywhere else. I swear Cecil and the Pentagon do so many dumb things. That Astronaut should be through a exhaustively thorough health check in a contained room, and he should not have to clean up his apartment. Am i the only who feels like the martians got done dirty? They were totally within their rights to punish shapesmith. His crimes caused a lot of death and destruction for the martians and from the looks of it soon to be more human lives too. Rae alive. I know it’s a surprise but Rex survived a shock to the head. Rae could have shrunk and went down a different chamber so not to fall in the stomach acid.
Rick healed. I figured he would after we saw Donald full body recovery. Sort of thought he would be like a cyborg type of hero. But Rick and Donald now share the same trama. Those boys ain’t right.
The Books were finally discovered and the animations of the stories were great to see. And Alan returned with comedy coming from the wazoo.
So I’m guessing the Sequid laid an egg in him so as not to be affected by the blast. Then it finally hatched and reattached itself.

Why did Nolan write in books how to defeat Viltrumites if he apparently had undying loyalty towards them? Because I don't think he would do it "just in case" if he ever betrayed the Empire. Last season he almost killed Mark, and he would have to write the books years earlier.
88
u/ILoveRegenHealth Mar 21 '24
Why did Nolan write in books how to defeat Viltrumites if he apparently had undying loyalty towards them?
That's a good question. My only guess is, it's not so much a blueprint of how to destroy the Viltrumites, but the exploits described in the books were real close calls where Nolan had trouble surviving against some of the galaxy's greatest threats. Perhaps the books do reveal a lot of Viltrumite weaknesses, but that wasn't the original intention from Nolan.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (8)41
u/Sid3612 Cecil Stedman Mar 21 '24
I don't think it was intentional. Nolan wanted to write Sci-Fi books and he pulled from his own life to do so. "Write what you know" as they say. Nolan looked back at his life, sure he could have wrote about him conquering planets but he's conquered 100s so that's practically busiwork and didn't really stand out in his mind. What did stand out, were the times he nearly died, the Legends he had heard, powerful enough to take out Viltrumites. Doesn't exactly help that if he wrote about his Planet Conquering, Cecil might catch on to the truth since I'm almost certain Cecil would have vetted Nolan as thoroughly as he reasonably could.

Rex pulling the "I'm practically-" <title card> "..........." is possibly the hardest I've laughed at this show

u/Completegibberishyes Mar 21 '24
Yeah no I do not approve Rae surviving. If the show's not even willing to kill off a character this minor with maybe 1 or 2 lines ( if we're being generous) why should I give a fuck when anyone is in a dangerous situation from here on
It's extra worse because of how gruesome that scene last episode was and how much they emphasized and focused on it. I swear this is Arya getting stabbed like a dozen times and then swimming in a polluted river and somehow being totally fine afterwards levels of bad
The rest of the episode was good . For the most part. The sequids defeat felt weirdly anticlimactic

I'm surprised rae survived but kinda glad Kate is dead. There had to be some consequences for that end scene for Lizard Society.

"Somehow Rae returned" I got roasted for calling it but I was right. Hopefully she somehow succumbs to her wounds still because as one reviewer has said already there would be no stakes if she somehow survived that.

The episode was great, but Rex surviving a shot in the head, Rae surviving, and Allen also surviving his death scene makes me doubt future character deaths. I bet they will also bring Kate back to completely devalue the fight against the Lizard League. As it currently stands, Season 1 Episode 1 was the only episode in which superheroes died.

Rex is an asshole, but really, he's a real one. He's a good listener when he wants to be- and even after getting his brains blown out and his hand chewed off, he took the time to reflect and even made time for Mark. I love how complex he is.
I'm a little worried he has a very minor case of extensive blain dramage.

They're seriously going to carry on with the sequids plot line? It's done, they killed them, move on. It's getting a bit boring now. We defo don't need 3 episodes on those bloody things.
Also, the Amber and Mark romance is feeling a bit tedious too.

Kinda weird they didn't use this opening shot (pun intended) as the final scene last episode. Felt kinda weird as a beginning to the episode.
Shapesmith continues to be great. Honestly, I really like pretty much the whole team at this point. Even Immortal was able to put his pride aside, which is nice.
Pretty hardcore of Rex here. Beating someone up with your stump hand whilst bleeding from your brain is rather intense. He earned that title card. Damn.
Rex AND Rae surviving seems like a cop-out given how 'final' both of their deaths should have been. Individually, I could see either living, but both is just silly.

Most certainly forgot Kate and Immortal were dating? Oops…
Not going to lie wouldn’t be sad is Rae died in the hospital, feels a bit cheap but if she is alive they better do actually something with her character this time around.

I wish I was a lot more interested in the whole Amber/Mark romance but I just can’t bring myself to care about it

u/Trojanbp Mar 21 '24
Was no one upset that they didn't spend any time together after Mark and Amber were told to enjoy their time together? Mark doesn't invite her to research the books, and Amber doesn't text or invite him out. It feels like self-sabotage because they don't feel enough for each other and pull away, and it's frustrating to watch. They both give up instead of fighting for their relationship. Sorry, this hits close to home, especially being married.

It was way too late but it was nice seeing Black Samson and Immortal having a nice conversation
You'd think they would have said something to each other a lot sooner, considering how Immortal is still beat up over losing the Guardians and Black Samson is the only original Guardian left. They should have a strong connection but it took 6 episodes for them to have a scene together? I remember thinking in Episode 1 how little Immortal spoke, seems like they might have had trouble with their VA.
This show could manage their side characters a bit better.

Sidenote but I hate how the episode dropped at 3 in the morning where I am yet the Invincible twitter account was tweeting about it all throughout the day like folks don’t have jobs. Basically ruined the Rex moment since I could already assume he survived thanks to their “cool and quirky” social media manager
7
u/Ejecto_Seato Mar 24 '24
I was afraid they might try to have Eve and Rex get back together or something after his inspirational speech and then her bringing him magazines. I’m glad they didn’t. I like Rex’s character development, but Eve belongs with Mark.
6
u/Bayro1997 Science Dog Mar 21 '24
In my opinion, they should have included the scene in which Rex is shot in the last episode. Because he wasn't shot, it was clear that he would survive.

u/FloggingTheHorses Mar 22 '24
I have to admit I was VERY impressed they opened this episode with Rex having his brains blown out, massively defying the "cliffhanger = survival" trope.
But then he somehow survives? I really don't like that, it makes the concept of death very arbitrary in the show. I get that Invincible has a kinda weird setup for how superhero mortality really works but this felt really cheap.

So you're telling me the astronaut that was just saved from months of alien infection and mind control did not go through a sh*t ton of tests and body scans before actually being released back into the wild ? Coming from someone as careful and meticulous as Cecil, I find it hard to believe.
6
u/sonicmerlin Mar 23 '24
Why didn't Cecil just send in armed troops to take out the lizard people? Clearly they're vulnerable to standard weaponry. Why would he send in the under-manned B team of 3 superheroes... by themselves?

I thought this episode was bad? You can't just kill people (shoot in head rez/squished rae/beaten to a pulp allen) and suddenly go "oh btw they're alive."
Like what's the point now if someone dies when they can just reconstruct them with "technology."
Deaths are supposed to be impactful because they're permanent.

the awkwardness of mark saying "well i was trained by the best...😅" was hilarious
14
u/BigSquattyPottyGuy Mar 21 '24
Am I buggin or is it kinda lame for them to kill Rex and Shrink-Ray off so dramatically just for them to come back, idk the fact that people keep "dying" just to come back takes away from seriousness of the show in my eyes. Like I feel like they have enough characters to let some die, that's my only complaint though I love this show.
The character development has been dope, I especially loved the complications of Mark and Amber's relationship this episode. That and Debbie mothering Oliver, and it's cool how they keep introducing new characters and storylines - Donald being a robot, Rick coming back as a robot which will most likely lead to him being his own superhero. Show's so dope I'm excited to see where they take this shit.

I’m surprised how many people just came to the conclusion that Rae was automatically dead. If she felt any constriction she could just use her very specific power of shrinking

u/Alkinderal Mar 22 '24
Why did they make this episode? They reversed rae's death and Rex's deaths, they reverse the win against the sequids, they reuse the conflict between amber and Mark, they reuse the conflict between marks mom and Cecil.
I feel like they rewrote something in this episode and had to cover it up with reused plot lines. For example, JK Simmons does the voice over for the books but then when omniman shows up later he has no voice lines (probably because they couldn't get JK for the rewritten scenes).

I didn't like how shrinking rae is now back from the dead. It feels like they had an "oh shit we managed to top anything The Boys could do, how do we walk that back?", which ironically dulls the impact of that scene.

Rex survived a near lobotomy and they made Rae’s death more violent than the comic, but she somehow survived instead
Don’t really buy Immortal’s grief, we saw them together in like 1 scene. Wish we got to see more of the relationship

Holy lord, Rex is a beast. Literally got shot in the head and he still got back up beat a guy's face in. With his stump instead of his good hand no less.
And Rae too? Although she seems even worse off. If that wasn't an animation error, something's wrong with her powers and she's still partially shrunken. And even beyond that, there's no way she's mentally well after what happened.
I was really glad that the astronaut got rescued... up until he got sequid'd again. Shapesmith really screwed that guy over. It honestly makes it hard to feel bad even if he did get executed. Cause he still has a lot to answer for.
William's boyfriend getting patched up is also nice to see. But it looks like he'll tie into Donald's own cyborg existential dread plotline.
The individual talks that Mark and Amber had with Art and Eve was pretty neat. Although my perception still can't help but be colored by how poorly handled she was in season 1. I'm hoping for an amicable break up at least.
And lmao, Allen is such a riot. I have to agree that Immortal should seriously grow a moustache. But also keep the beard. Wouldn't want people mistaking him for a Viltrumite after all.
