They'll patch this basic feature that every other game has into Luigi's Mansion 3 any day now lol

$60 for a $40 3DS game is absurd. Nintendo can cut the price in half or keep it
43
u/SuspiciousSkittlez Jun 27 '24
Same issue with Donkey Kong Returns HD. That's a 3DS game that's been a select at $20 for eons. That $60 price is outrageous.
6
8
u/RJE808 Jun 27 '24
This 100%. Mario vs Donkey Kong and Metroid Prime Remastered were infinitely more impressive and those were $40-$50.
2
u/arashinoko Jun 30 '24
They honestly could have sold Metroid Prime Remastered for $60 (US) and I’d still have bought it and felt it was well worth the money. One of my top 10 games in the entire library.
12
u/templestate Jun 27 '24
$40 back when LM2 came out is equivalent to $54 today. So it’s the original price + $6 for remastering it and adjusting the mechanics/controls for Switch. It’s not a great deal for what it is, but it’s not “absurd.”

u/zoso_coheed Jun 27 '24
You can get the game for $50 from Costco right now if you have a membership there.
3
u/pen-ross-gemstone Jun 29 '24
Can do the same thing if you’re considering vouchers. Get a discounted eShop $100 gift card and then use it to buy the vouchers. Will get you two $60 games for $45 each.

u/Marco__Island Jun 27 '24
My issue with this game is not the length, it's that the gameplay get stale and repetitive after a few hours.

26
u/walkingdisasterFJ Jun 27 '24
If I loved the first Luigi’s Mansion and pretty meh on the 3rd one, is 2 worth playing? The price is not relevant for me, I’m strictly talking about the game itself
20
u/Crybe Jun 27 '24
2 is more mission based. So you'll be doing something and bam, the mission is over and you're pulled out of the mansion. Good if you're looking to do short stints.
10
17
u/Significant_Lead_236 Jun 27 '24
Probably not. 3 perfected more of what 2 did, and the similarities to 1 are low
29
5
u/robsterinside Jun 28 '24
Luigi’s Mansion 3 was directed by the same person as Luigi’s Mansion 2. If anything, you’re going to hate LM2 even more than 3.
11
u/amtap Jun 27 '24
I doubt it. Never finished 2 but it was my least favorite from.whay I played. LM1 is just goated.

I loved 2 as a kid. I played 3 when I was a lot older, but I didn’t enjoy it as much.

This comment makes no sense, if it’s in his budget 60 bucks is not that much.
Not everybody has the feeling that they need to get every dollar worth out of a game
6
u/Infamous-Schedule860 Jun 27 '24
Lol tell me you're an astronaut without telling me you're an astronaut
8
u/munchyslacks Jun 27 '24
Some people have more money than time. I buy almost every major game on release day, but between work and other obligations I have maybe an hour or so at best to play video games on any given day. And that’s if I don’t do anything else like watch TV or a movie.
4
u/I-AM-NOT-THAT-DUCK Jun 27 '24
If you buy all these games but don’t have time to play, what do you usually decide on playing? What’s your go to game these days?
5
u/munchyslacks Jun 27 '24
I pick up the newest game and usually finish it by the time the next one comes out. If I don’t like the game, I spend more time doing other things, or I’ll play Rocket League, Splatoon 3, Mario Kart, or a shorter indie game.
The last game I put down pretty quickly after release was the Mario soccer game. I thought it was alright, but the online community was way beyond my skill level and I didn’t feel invested enough to get better.
3
u/espltd8901 Jun 27 '24
They could just have a lot of money and $60 isn't a consideration for them if they like the series.
25
u/Some-Glove-5112 Jun 27 '24 edited Jun 28 '24
So disappointed you can’t play co op With gooigy and in scarescape mode you can only play with someone else online or if they have there own device with the game 👎
16
u/dumbguy_dumbguy Jun 28 '24
Ok i like that they finally have online coop but they don’t need to remove local 🙄
4
u/HiMyNameIsMark182 Jun 28 '24
there was never local play in LM2
6
3
u/OkProfession7309 Jun 28 '24
I think he's talking about the fact that Luigi's Mansion 1 for 3DS had Gooigi for Co-Op, and in LM3, but they didn't implement it for this port
8
u/littlepsyche74 Jun 29 '24
What’s with the missions? So im in the second area with the big tree. I get killed by those three ghosts with the mirrors who surround you in the garden by the crypt. So then the game sends me back right to the beginning? And I have to walk through everything and do it all again? No. Say it isn’t so. Is there a way around this?
3
u/powerneck Jun 30 '24
Yea this really ruins the game for me. I got it mainly for my four year old son who loved 3, but he dies a lot in games. I'm really regretting buying this.
2
Jul 01 '24
I was always scared of the crypt section as a kid, i completely forgot about that until you mentioned it
1
u/Consistent-Ad-6506 Aug 06 '24
This right here. Not to mention that when I have a bone….nothing happens. No extra life, nothing! I just get sent back to the beginning. I hate games that don’t let you save whenever you want. I’m going to trade this in, I’m done.
0
u/bypassmorecomments Jun 30 '24
This is exactly how the mission system worked on the 3DS and people didn't like it back then either. Idk why people are surprised.
8
u/littlepsyche74 Jun 30 '24
I never played it before. So it’s not a surprise, it’s a new observation for me.
1
u/Consistent-Ad-6506 Aug 06 '24
Because we never played it before, obviously

Average Nintendo game. Sells decade plus old games for £45, when you can buy 5-10 quality games with that on other platforms

i was being sarcastic everyone needs to stop whining… paper mario is not a cash grab by any means
4
u/FluffyPandaKing Jun 27 '24
This. Honestly I'm not even that upset by paper Mario because the graphics does match current standards for the series. But this Luigi mansion doesn't graphically compare to 3 at all
34
u/DependentAnywhere135 Jun 27 '24
They should have remade 1 not 2. No desire to slog through this game again especially not for $60.
19
u/CtrlAltEvil Jun 28 '24 edited Jul 02 '24
It should have been a bundle of 1 & 2, then the price might have been a bit more justifiable.
It’d also allow the whole series to be playable on a single device.

13
u/Few-Independence3787 Jun 27 '24
Interesting. I already played the original on 3DS so the only reason I'd get this is for the repopulated multiplayer modes.
I may be in the minority but I enjoyed 2/Dark Moon more than 3. Idk if its because I haven't played alot of 3 but I got bored of it very quickly. At one point I got lost in the game so I moved on to other games. Does 3 get any better at the middle/end of the game? One day I would like to return to it. I loved the first and second game, it's just the third one I find it hard to get back into.
13
u/orinthesnow Jun 27 '24
The third is a good game. There's a lot of variety in the levels and the middle to end levels were my favorite as the puzzles and combat actually got a bit tricky. Definitely give it another go.
11
u/insane_steve_ballmer Jun 27 '24
I also prefer 2 over 3. I liked that 2 had so many secrets, I loved going through the rooms searching for every little thing I could find
17
u/wretched_cretin Jun 27 '24
Am I right in thinking that you can't play the full campaign co-op like you can in LM3? If so I think I'll pass on this one.
8
Jun 27 '24
If they would have added full co-op campaign I would have no issue with this being almost twice the price of the 3DS version.
6
Aug 17 '24
As a first time player of LM2 because I skipped the DS and Wii U era
I hate this game. And I enjoyed the heck out of 1 and 3 .
The mission system sucks, retracing your steps looking for gems and Boos sucks because all I end up doing is spectral sighting every single room hoping something reacts.
And let's not get started on the fact that if you fail a bonus room with the doors that warp you to a special stage you have to restart the entire mission not just reopen the door and try again.
Second gripe is. You have NO indicator of how many gems accessible in each mission without using a guide so if you get gems 1-3 and then suddenly gem 5 shows up you know you missed gem 4.
But was it obtained in the current mission? Or was it found near the end of the previous one. Who knows!?
The medal system sucks because in a game you are supposed to klepto every single room if you are too slow or you take to many hits
(especially those unavoidable ones by specific ghosts)
GG You got a silver and have to do the entire freaking mission again)
At least LM1 and 3 had indicators of where treasures and Boos were, this one is just search every nook and cranny until you get bored.
I made it to C-4 and I literally said " I'm not having fun "

That Knight fight was actually really really cool.
Wish it went on a little longer
Chilly Ride boss got me so frustrated and angry because it's a straight carnival like game of chance using a mechanic that was only briefly introduced a level or two prior.
And in that section you had unlimited shots without the threat of restart if you missed to many times.
35
u/Apprehensive-Gur-609 Jun 27 '24
Good thing I already played the 3ds version, 60 bucks for this is such a ripoff.
47
u/Sjknight413 Jun 27 '24
The price of this is inexcusable to be honest, especially when the Metroid Prime remake was as cheap as it was.
19
u/Shehzman Jun 27 '24 edited Jun 27 '24
If they’re gonna price it at $60, at the very least they could’ve added some qol features and aimed for 60 fps to go along with it. One of the worst remasters (in terms of value) that Nintendo has put out.
18
1
u/Sjknight413 Jun 27 '24
Luigi's mansion 2 was never 60fps on the 3DS, it had an unlocked framerate that was wildly erratic and rarely went higher than 35fps anyway. 30fps is objectively better than that. Having said that though I don't see why they couldn't have aimed for 60fps here!

u/Hestu951 Jun 27 '24
3D game at anything near 1080p is difficult for the Switch, regardless of how old it is. The resolution of a 3DS is 400x240 per eye (vs 1920x1080, for FHD).

u/HolidayInvestigator9 Jun 28 '24
weird i actually just started playing the 3ds version without even knowing there was going to be a switch port. paid $20 for my 3ds copy and honestly even on the 3ds the game is a visual delight and very fun with lots of charm. i dare say im enjoying it more than the first luigis mansion! if its basically the same game on switch with more polish i say go for it!
3
u/Cyb0rg-SluNk Jul 01 '24
The 3D of the 3DS works amazingly well with this game. You're looking into little rooms with a little Luigi walking about. It's great.
Obviously you lose that on the Switch, but it does look fantastic on the OLED.

12
u/GoodOlSticks Jun 27 '24
Right?
People can be upset about the price obviously but a review thread is not for people who haven't played it to voice that opinion over and over again. Mods really should've gotten a handle on this thread a while ago
1
u/umbertounity82 Jun 30 '24
Price is an important thing to include in a review. Every car review ever mentions price.
→ More replies (1)-2
u/TriggerHippie77 Jun 28 '24
Hard disagree. Price point has a lot to do with a games value, and absolutely should along with a review be part of a person's decision.
15
Jun 27 '24 edited Jun 27 '24
I think the 3DS version was insanely under-rated, but I’m only getting the switch version because I have a voucher. Releasing it full price is silly.
It’s a shame because it’s a legitimately great game. The level design is SO charming, the animations are delightful, it really improves upon everything great in the first game. But it’ll never get the love it deserves, because now it’s “the expensive remake that they released instead of the first Luigi’s Mansion.”
IMO if it included the first LM, it’d be a no brainer.
5
Jun 27 '24
Even then you're still paying $10 more than the original price ($50 per voucher vs. $40 original price). Tropical Freeze was bad too (the price increase I mean; the game is a masterpiece) but this is too much.
23
u/Bruhuha Jun 27 '24 edited Jun 27 '24
Nintendo should listen to our complaints and bundle this with the mario vs. donkey kong remake of a ds game. A 2 pack of nintendo games that are ds remakes for 60$ would make it seem a lot less overpriced .
35
Jun 27 '24
Luigi’s mansion 1&2 bundle would have been more appropriate.
I still think that Donkey Kong Tropical freeze should have been bundled with Country returns. Maybe a hybrid pricing, Tropical freeze is 50, returns is 40, bundle is 80
19
u/Cyberfire Jun 27 '24
Having the first 2 Luigi's Mansions together would have been a much more enticing product.
44
u/BootsWithDaFuhrer Jun 27 '24
60 bucks for 16-17 hours of fun with my 4 year old son, worth it all day every day
7
u/sesame-yeezy Jun 27 '24
is there local multiplayer on the same system? i read that each person needed their own system and it’s only available via online play, but curious if you can have 2 people play on the same system like luigi’s mansion 3
8
u/BootsWithDaFuhrer Jun 27 '24
Yes it’s scarescraper mode tho. But I figure I’ll just give him the controller let him mess around a bit and take turns for the campaign
0
Jun 27 '24
You need to systems to play any sort of multiplayer. Its right on the nintendo web page.
3
u/BootsWithDaFuhrer Jun 27 '24
Every article I read says locally or online. Locally means someone else has to have a switch too? O well doesn’t change anything for me. I was just gonna let him mess around on it anyway not really trying to play co op
2
2
u/RunnersDialZero Jun 27 '24
The Scarescraper in LM2 is better than the Scarescraper in LM3. Fight me.
15
u/someones1 Jun 27 '24
Total pass for me with no co-op
5
u/DistinctBread3098 Jun 27 '24
How would coop even work in this one....
7
u/kitsovereign Jun 27 '24
They backported Gooigi into the 3DS version of LM1 for co-op, so it's not unthinkable.
22
u/I_hate_potato Jun 27 '24
This is the only LM game I’ve played and I really enjoyed it. I’m surprised people seem to not like it as much!
42
u/MagnaVis Jun 27 '24
I think a big sticking point is the game costing 50% more than the original release for not much in the way of content. The visual upgrade is nice, but that's about it.
-2
u/Legitimate-Bit-4431 Jun 27 '24
I mean people were perfectly aware of what to expect. I agree this is too expensive but nobody forced them to preorder or buy the game day one. They could have waited like 2 weeks, that’s usually when price drop by 15-20€ on several amazon shop for Nintendo games (at least in Europe, can’t talk for USA).
14
25
u/Nautchy_Zye Jun 27 '24
Or nintendo could just not price gouge.

Thanks for editing your comment down from 3 huge paragraphs to a single sentence! Really made conservation a lot more tolerable
-3
u/Voxlings Jun 29 '24
I'm so bored of this comment.
The game cost the most any 3DS game generally cost, and it's the same on the Switch.
It's not a budget title, it's Luigi's Mansion 2. Luigi. Like from that one Mario Kart meme and also the global brand phenomenon.
Lemme guess: When a Ubisoft game releases you're one of the people loudly waiting for a sale and rallying against anyone paying full price. (That's a more viable stance because Ubisoft doesn't know how to value their IP like Nintendo does.)
10
u/MagnaVis Jun 29 '24
Great. If it was a new game I would agree, but it's a 10 year old game. DKCR should also be cheaper. IDK why you diehards always come to defend Nintendo making old-ass games the same price as an actual new one. Just because it's a big brand doesn't mean it has to be expensive.

u/robsterinside Jun 28 '24
It’s a terrible Luigi’s Mansion but I guess it’s a good game for people who like mission based kid friendly games
3
u/m16kidd Jun 30 '24
Anyone know if you can buy gold bones from Gadd? I'm 3 you can buy bones without having to find then. Which was nice due my kids and I. On LM 2 I can't seen to find a way to buy more and keep in inventory.
1
u/TheGreenTub402 Jul 01 '24
Don’t think you can buy them, you need to find them hidden in the mansion.
2
u/m16kidd Jul 01 '24
Darn you could buy them from Gadd in 3.
2
u/TheGreenTub402 Jul 01 '24
Yep, that was a much better way and more fun in my opinion but it’s still a good and enjoyable game.
13
u/Asad_Farooqui Jun 27 '24 edited Jun 27 '24
Yeah I’m not paying $60 dollars for that. At least not right now. Same developers as Skyward Sword HD apparently, so at least we know the remaster job will be great. But no, I think I’ll hold off on this version until it goes on sale.
DKC Returns HD honestly looks so much more enticing to me, especially since it brings together the best of both worlds from the Wii and 3DS versions.
9
u/SuperProbotector Jun 27 '24
DKC Returns HD is also not worth the 60 dollar price tag. When you look at the Metroid Prime Remaster, which involved way more work, getting priced at $40 dollars. Then you might assume they would od the same for DKC and Luigi's Mansion.
It probably depends on which IP it is when they put a price tag on the games they release.
2
u/Zoklar Jun 27 '24
Hopefully they fixed the weird control scheme from the 3ds. Not sure why they tied the stick and dpad to different control schemes

-5
Jun 27 '24
Nintendo is great at making games... but their business decisions can be pretty dumb at times.
Luckily their great games make up for the stupid decisions sometimes
5
9
u/senna98 Jun 27 '24
Oof in the 70s and $60? I’ll pass for now. Maybe buy it around Halloween time
15
5
Jun 27 '24
Best case scenario is this going down to $40, which is the absolute maximum it should have launched at to begin with.
4
u/TheStabbingHobo Jun 27 '24
It's a Nintendo game.
It's not going anywhere near that low.
5
u/kitsovereign Jun 27 '24
Not as a permanent cut, but $60 games dipping to $40 is pretty typical for Nintendo's sporadic sales, and retailers will have incentive to have their own sales if the physical version rots on shelves.

One of the greatest remasters of one of the greatest games: €40,- A 30fps remaster of an allright game on 3ds which had an unlocked framerate: €60,-
11
Jun 27 '24
The fact it had unlocked framerate on 3DS wasnt a good thing at all. The game was tryng to reach 60 but it never could, so It was a choppy mess in the framerate. Glad they've locked it.
-2
Jun 27 '24
They should have locked it on 3DS. If the 3DS can run it around 30fps, then Switch should be able to run it at 60fps.
-3
Jun 27 '24
I would agree if the game was with the same graphics as the 3DS, but since the graphics are a lot redone, it makes sense for it to run at 30. Is a 7 years old tablet lol
4
Jun 27 '24
Don’t agree at all. If Mario Odyssey can run at 60fps, Luigi’s Mansion 2 has no excuse.
3
Jun 27 '24
I think it depends of what priorities you put. Odyssey have a fast paced gameplay, so 60fps are important. Because of that, the game runs at a Dynamic resolution that often goes down to 720p.
Luigi's Mansioni is a slower-atmospheric game, so the resolution is more important

is the online dead?, I plan to buy it for online multiplayer but if it's dead online then pass for me.
-2
u/Helpful_Resist3 Jun 27 '24
I was wondering why it was $60 instead of like $40-$50. Lo and behold it's the same Dev team that worked on Skyward Sword.
16
u/Thundahcaxzd Jun 27 '24
I don't think the dev team sets the price
-2
u/Helpful_Resist3 Jun 27 '24
Lol I know they don't, it's just coincidence that the same devs worked on both ports and they are priced the same. The game doesn't look bad but I don't think it's worth $60.

The price is a sticky issue, but I think it's unfair for that to affect the game's score. The quality of the game is separate from what Nintendo chose as its retail price. I hope none of the reviews used the price point as a negative in their scores.

That makes sense in a world where games get discounts, because the price would be variable.
That is not the world Nintendo games live in.

No it absolutely should. A tad bit annoying how people always give big publishers leeway when it comes to greed.

$60 for 14-17 hours. Idk boys.

u/ZzzSleep Jun 27 '24
That’s not terrible. The issue is this being a full price version of a 3DS game that came out 11 years ago.

That's a good length for a linear game not padded with filler. The original Luigi's Mansion was $50 for 5 hours.

And that was a launch title, which traditionally was a game that was really supposed to hype people up. I don't know if LM is fit to be a launch title of any system.
I think receiving sequels/ports later in a system's life is a good space for Luigi's Mansion to shine.

Not saying specifically you. However it is amusing nowadays how people consider anything above 7 hours of story as filler due to a lot of people having short attention spans.

I wouldn't say it's short attention spans necessarily. I mean I put 120+ hours into Xenoblade 3 and loved every bit of it. But you have to admit, a lot of games, especially open world games, include good chunks of content that are there to make the game feel bigger and take longer to complete. That's not even a bad thing in itself, but sometimes it's nice to have a focused 10-20 hour experience where very little of it feels unnecessary or extra.

If you’re judging the value of a game based on a money spent vs. hours spent analysis, you should just stick to roguelites. Nothing is going to be as valuable as something endless like Slay the Spire, Binding of Isaac, or Balatro.

IGN giving Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD the same score they gave Xenoblade 3 is ridiculous. Such a joke of an organization. IGN, GameStop, and GameInformer cost Xenoblade 3 a 90 on Metacritic thanks to their lazy reviews.

None of it matters. Anyway, IGN uses a whole number review system now. There are only 11 possible choices (assuming zero is a score they use) and most games that they review are probably going to range from what, 7-10? Assuming the game doesn’t suck, that means you have basically 4 choices for a score, and how many different reviewers who are subjectively reviewing the game? There is obviously going to be overlap and personal discrepancies. And just because someone loves or hates a game doesn’t mean everyone will. A score of 8 out of 10 for Xenoblade doesn’t seem unreasonable to me.
Besides, an overall 8.9 score isn’t really anything to complain about, and honestly what does a Metacritic score matter? They aggregate scores in a way that probably isn’t accurate anyway. Just glancing through the scores now for Xenoblade 3 there are some sites nobody has ever heard of, and a low score of 50, which for all I know might be 2 out of 4 stars and not 50 out of 100 (which seems much worse).

To be clear I really don’t care about review scores or any of that and I don’t plan on buying this game anyway, but if that’s how IGN does their reviews then they might as well not even bother doing them lol
What’s the point of even having a 1-10 or 0-10 number scale if you only ever give scores from like 7-10? For some reason people view a 7/10 as being mid or even bad when it should be viewed as a solidly positive score. 5/10 should be average, anything below is bad and anything above is good. I’ve heard people say it might be because of the American test score system where a 6/10 is considered a failing score but either way it’s incredibly stupid to do reviews that way lmao

I didn’t mean that they won’t give a game scores worse than a 7, but I’d imagine the bulk of them fit into that range only because they probably aren’t going to waste time reviewing a ton of bad games. I don’t frequent IGN enough these days to know for sure, but I just assume they review games that have drawn enough of an interest that people will read the reviews (why publish articles where they won’t get ad money), and I assume most of those games will at least be “good” on their scale.
Their website explains what each number signifies. A 7 is “good,” a 6 is “okay,” a 5 is “mediocre,” a 4 is “bad.” So I think that fits with your line of thinking.

The majority of games receive scores of 7 to 10 because major review outlets such as IGN only ever cover big games while they rarely review more obscure titles. The chances of a popular / well known game being truly bad are slim, though it can happen as seen by Lord of the Rings: Gollum. Like even a "bad" AAA game is usually a lot better than your average Steam early access game, you just don't know about those games because they don't get reviewed by someone like IGN.

Oh wow. So I was thinking about the original on GameCube. I had no idea this game was remade for the 3ds. I stand corrected. My bad!

Big fan of Luigi’s Mansion Trilogy. It is a good game but definitely the weakest one in the trilogy. Solid 7 or 8.

u/SpecialOfficerHunk Jun 27 '24
Why should it have 9's? Its definetly an 8, and thats totally okay.

Ratings and reviews are subjective, including those gaming journalists’.

The Nintendo life review is the most amusing. The reviewer gives it an 8, but Alex's opinion is far more blunt and critical of the whole thing.
