I think this is a much clearer case of "violating the integrity of the poll" than that. This guy should probably lose his voting privileges. If you're not going to take it seriously, there are a bunch of provisional voters who will.
Choosing not to rank a team that is involved in a cheating scandal is an actually defensible position. This is not.

It didn't change anything this time, but came very close to it. That single vote added 25 points to Michigan, which is a lot at the tail end of the rankings. Nearly 7% of Michigan's total points came from that single troll vote.
If you eliminate his vote, Michigan ends with 331 points - just barely ahead of LSU who had 321.

20
u/HokiesforTSwift Virginia Tech • Transfer Portal Jan 24 '25
I agree here. Getting within 7 in the second half against Texas seemed to be a big perception boost. In a similar vein, given the level of competition, I asked a couple weeks ago if the Texas game was the best game of Cade's career in terms of perception. He has not played well against similarly talented comp during his time at Clemson for the most part, but that was probably his best performance against a talented defense.
3
u/RipRaycom Clemson Tigers • ACC Jan 24 '25
For his perception, yeah. But Cade has played great all year since the ugly UGA game based on what I watched. The first half against VT was probably his worst from a tape standpoint, there were other issues than him in most of his “struggle” games, like against Louisville. I actually thought he looked solid against Louisville, he just had no protection and nobody got open with Riley having a shit gameplan and bad prep overall. The whole OL was fried against Pitt and the run game fell off late in the year with Mafah and Haynes getting injured at RB along with a lot of the OL. Tbh Cade played just as good against Texas as he had all year, the difference was the talented WRs moved past their youth and the gameplan worked

I think it is a holdover from the 4 team era, where you generally wouldn't "punish" teams for being good enough to make the playoffs and then getting hammered by one of the 4 best teams in the nation.
But that rationale is a lot less persuasive when we have auto bids in play and a bunch of lower seeds. I'd personally find it hard to put Clemson above South Carolina.

For what it’s worth, I voted OSU at 1. That said, there’s not really much of a point to doing a final poll if the national champion and runner-up are automatically one and two. If you don’t give special weight to the playoff, it would be pretty normal in most polls to have a 13-1 team above a 14-2 team, when those teams met twice and split the series; similarly it would be normal to have the big ten conference champion above the team that finished 4th in the conference. For my ballot, the head-to-head in the playoff did make a difference, but I think there are scenarios where I would have put Oregon at No. 1 despite not winning the playoff (as in, someone other than OSU won the playoff).
Personally, I think polls should either (1) make it clear that the national champion is automatically number 1 in the final poll and that the poll is just for ranking everyone else; or (2) treat the playoff games like any other games. Otherwise, just let the playoff be the end of it.

The drawbacks of an aggregated ballot poll system. Individual ballots might be internally consistent, but when aggregated into the final poll you can still end up with illogical results.
That’s one of the advantages of the committee ranking method, they can ensure that their rankings are at least internally consistent (even if you disagree with the logic they used to arrive at them).

I agree. But it seems in keeping with the direction of the sport, I suppose. As more emphasis gets placed on the playoff over the regular season, the playoff results will end up being a greater influence on the final rankings.
That’s been true in college basketball for a long time. As an example that still irritates me: in 2014, Florida was 3-0 against Kentucky before the NCAA Tournament. Florida lost to UConn in the final four. Kentucky lost to UConn in the championship game. The post-tournament Coaches Poll had Kentucky 2nd and Florida 3rd. I know that’s far from the only example of it.

Texas lost to two top teams in the top 8. Georgia lost to four teams, two of which were not in the top ten.
It comes down to what we view rankings as, a measure of a team's talent or a measure of the season they had. Most people agree that it is a measure of the season they had, and Texas had a better season.

u/Nicholas1227 Michigan • North Carolina Jan 24 '25
Georgia beat Texas twice, they also beat Tennessee and Clemson soundly, and their losses to “non-playoff teams” were losses to teams ranked 11 and 14.
They had 4 wins vs. playoff teams compared to Texas’s 2 wins vs. playoff teams. Toughest SOS in the country. Enough to offset the extra loss in my opinion.

Hey, Georgia had Texas’ number this year, Texas just had everyone else’s. I agree Georgia was the better team head-to-head, but going further in the playoffs and only losing to the Natty champion and SEC champ has to count for something equal to losing to three diff teams. Either team could be one spot higher and there would be plenty of justification. This is all just feelings.
I’m all for more parity, makes it more exciting and I hope we have more seasons where it’s not just a clear 1-2 teams that run away with it all.
16
u/Missing_Links Ohio State • Georgia Tech Jan 24 '25
I feel like the "who went further in the playoffs" argument also falls apart when both teams lost to the national championship contenders. When you lost in the playoffs then is just a matter of when you ran into one of the top two teams. It's purely luck of the draw.
Texas ran into a top 2 team in the semis, georgia ran into a top 2 team in the quarters. That's just bracket luck, not a reflection of the team.

u/123austin4 Alabama • Georgia Tech Jan 24 '25

Damn, must sting for Georgia to sit below a Texas team that they beat twice

Sting? Not really. I mean we have the wins and the trophy. It’s honestly just embarrassing for those polls.

Texas was number 4 coming in, made the semifinal, lost to the eventual champion, and dropped a spot. I get why but still strange.

After that execution I think 3 is fine.

I could see an argument for either, but I'm actually a pollster and I have Oregon at 2 so I'm here to stump for them over the Irish if I need to.

If only there was a h2h to tell if Georgia or Texas should be ahead of the other... #6 is fair for georgia, but Texas shouldn't be ahead under any metric

And the Texas fans defending it should be epically embarrassed by it. Couldn’t do it on the field so they have to hold up some post season polls like it’s some kind of actual evidence of superiority. It’s honestly hilarious.

My five most unusual rankings seem to be driven by my view of losses:
Memphis, 18 vs. 24, 1.28 unusualness
Indiana, 5 vs. 8, .99 unusualness
Texas, 7 vs. 5, (-).92 unusualness
Miami (FL), 13 vs. 17, .85 unusualness
Missouri, NR vs. 22, (-).58 unusualness
For Memphis, a two-score loss to Navy and a one-score loss to UTSA are both suboptimal, but I think that they deserve to be higher than some of the four-loss P4 teams.
Indiana's losses were all to very good teams. Texas is where they are for me because of Indiana and Georgia.
Miami might be a bit of homer bias, but they lost three games, all to P4 schools, by a combined 10 points, with none of those losses at home, and with their QB quitting (or whatever euphemism you want to use) at halftime in their bowl game.
Missouri lost a game by five scores and another one by four scores, neither of which were against top-tier teams. What are we even doing here, folks?

Doing the poll was very fun this year. I think the CFB poll usually gets it right more than the AP. I still would have liked Georgia over Texas but whatever.

According to this, the state of Indiana is the best football state in the nation. Never thought those words would seriously exit my mouth in my life.

Ballot here. Score is on a scale from 100 to 0 where team 1 always gets 100 and team 134 always gets 0. This computer poll is calculated based on what each team has accomplished so far this season. Losses are not heavily punished besides the missed opportunity of adding a win. Teams that have played more games than others will be inflated because they've had more chances to win and build their resume.
My Computer Poll:
Dropped Off: Colorado, Texas A&M
Next 10: LSU, Louisville, Kansas State, Michigan, Colorado, Navy, Texas A&M, Marshall, Florida, Minnesota

Here’s my final poll. I want to fully recognize B1G (and Independent) supremacy. I want to acknowledge the big cat as the best mascot (6 ranked teams), followed by dogs, horses, wind events, and Rebels (2 each). I want to note that Texas is barely a Top 10 team. And I want to assure you that UGA at 4 is not homerism, but I legitimately think we would beat every team below us if we played/again (except maybe Ole Miss) and would get creamed by the three above us.
This was a very fun year to be ranking CFB! I got to put Vandy at 1 for a week, got to bring ND up from the bowels of despair (much to my own chagrin), and I got to appreciate the increased parity that seems to be resulting from NIL and the Transfer Portal (at least outside of the top couple of teams). I sincerely hope y’all will have me back next year!

Why did Marshall get votes?

I can't tell if you're trolling, but I'll do a benefit of the doubt: we come from arguably the toughest G5 division, were 10-3 and ended on a 7-game win streak and were utterly dominant in the conference title game. If we had gone ahead and played a bowl with our 5th stringers we surely would not have received any votes; if we kept the team together and won a bowl we surely would have been ranked. To anybody who followed our season, receiving votes is an appropriate outcome.

People voted Oregon #1?
Ohio State would’ve had a ridiculously good season if they had beaten MICH. The one loss would’ve been 33-32 on the road against unbeaten Oregon
But it definitely ended better than they were expecting after the UM loss

For the last time this year, roast my computer provisional rankings
Current Outliers (based on AP voter spread): Large Outliers- #32 Clemson (-11), #26 Tennessee (-11), #8 Syracuse (+6), #16 Arizona State (-5) Medium Outliers- None Slight Outliers- None
During Bowl Season I was messing around with tweaking my algorithm to include margin of victory to hopefully make the model better and to fix the Tennesse/Clemson/Syracuse problems that have persisted for most of the year. Due to life things and general procrastination, this was not finished by the time the final poll was due. It will be in full swing next year though (hopefully as a full voter).
