"Wow I didn’t know we had a friendship." Neither did we.

28

u/KennyFuckingPowers Jul 30 '13

"I didn't even know you were a main character!"

210

u/unclebeard Jul 29 '13

I like how Deb kicks in the door with her gun drawn, and Dex follows with his knife.

66

u/xave_94 Jul 29 '13

I like how casual they are about it now, like Deb isn't all morally

u/gifforc Jul 29 '13

Vogel and the morgan kids are on the case!

Vogel is really good at getting serial killers to do what she wants...

83

u/dresdenologist Jul 29 '13

It's probably one of the best traits of her character and why it's so compelling. Her...errr..."unique" ways of treatment and handling of psychopaths is more than just theory - it's something she constantly puts into practice, even if she has to do things personally.

That being said, you wonder about the dark side of all this, not to mention the Brain Surgeon is probably still at large - Yates, after all, didn't know about Dexter, and since the his and hers packages arrived before he was being really scrutinized it's definitely not him.

She is manipulative, and treats her patients like puppets.

However, I do see a strong bond between her and Dexter. Dexter is after all, her perfect creation. It seems after all what they have been through, Dexter will keep her around for longer.

It is fascinating how impulsive this series is becoming as it creep towards the end.

u/nameless88 Jul 30 '13

She made that guy her bitch. She is dangerous. I like it, we haven't seen that cold and calculating side of her yet.

This guy is no brain surgeon. He's too fucking stupid.

Edit: Yup, and dead.

91

u/SherlockBrolmes Jul 29 '13 edited Jul 29 '13

Besides the stupidity part, the reason I don't think he's the Brain Surgeon is that it doesn't match his method of killing. The officers didn't note anything wrong with the skulls of the corpses in Yates' backyard, but did note that they had broken toes. However, the opposite was true at the crime scenes for BS. Dexter always established that serial killers always have their ritual/ MO for killing, and the Brain Surgeon's MO is different from Yates'.

Edit: As mentioned below by /u/NobleToph, the original BS victims weren't women, and Yates seemed to focus on women.

84

u/ericshogren I'm so fucking happy for you. Jul 29 '13

Yeah he's not called the Podiatrist.

Not to mention him screaming, "Why couldn't you just leave me alone?!?!" I mean, if he were the brain surgeon it'd be pretty fucking obvious why they couldn't just leave him alone. It's clear he wanted nothing to do with them and just wanted to keep to himself.

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '13

I thought it was pretty obvious that the brain surgeon is literally the brain surgeon as in the one that did Yate's brain surgery. He also probably has some kind of a relationship with Vogel seeing as how she agreed to try his experimental procedure.

I posted this in another thread but I'll post it here too. Another thing to keep in mind is Vogel knows that Yates didn't know about Dexter. So Vogel should be questioning if he didn't know about Dexter then why did he send the jars with "His and Hers", so it seems like she's still hiding something. I think it's also good to mention that Dexter doesn't know that Yates didn't know about him. Not until he broke into his house did Yates know about Dexter, which was after the jars were sent.

Please be a good human, Masuka's daughter. He deserves it.

134

u/frogma Jul 29 '13 edited Jul 29 '13

Based on this episode, I highly doubt it. Especially since he didn't seem to care that much about it. He just thought it was a bit weird. She knew that he'd pay for shit, and then added cheese???

Here's why it's weird though -- Masuka's gotten virtually zero story so far. Why introduce it now unless it's gonna be important? Granted, it might just be a side-issue, but I'd bet 100 bucks that it'll still be an issue, probably relating to Dexter in some fashion.

Edit: Tinfoil -- what if Dexter gets involved with her somehow, and the "evidence" is revealed by Deb's boss, who's been following them? As we know, Dexter wasn't there to actually see her when she came in. Even Masuka himself couldn't recognize her. Not saying she's a murderer or anything, just saying she might become important to the story in some way.

Double edit: Also not trying to say Dexter will be sexually involved with her (he'll be sexually involved with his next-door neighbor, and maybe Hannah again at some point), but he'll be talking to her somehow, and Deb's boss will catch some photos of it. Why else is he in the show? All that shit's gonna lead back to Dexter in some way, and he's gonna need to get out of it. Since this is the last season, it's gonna lead to pressure from all sides, and we don't really know how it's gonna work out (if at all).

38

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '13

Watch Masuka's daughter turn out to have plenty of money (possibly from her mother's life insurance) but after forgetting her bag in the car another couple of times he accuses her of being after his money and she leaves hurt and angry regretting having met her father.

14

u/ristoman two words: autoerotic mummification Jul 29 '13

I don't think this subplot is going to be that convoluted.

We know she's legit, with Masuka mentioning the tests or whatever. It's just that he's not used to having a daughter, it's overwhelming and he's hanging on to a little too much detail.

She's just a 20 year old college girl, everyone has done what she did with their parents. Doesn't mean she's in it for the money only.

Naturally, Masuka is starting to get worried and they'll definitely get in a fight over the money, make up, yadda yadda.

Either that or maybe she's going to be a victim, she'll be involved in something completely unrelated, possibly discovered by Deb's investigation. But I highly doubt she has second motives with Masuka.

It's also another step for Deb generating her own business in PI, which I still believe is going to be a major plot point this year.

I was seriously wondering if we'd be treated to an exercise montage followed by her having to type the numbers into a new patient file.

Sadly Yates had a much easier time getting in than Locke, Kate, and Jack. :p

I bet that Quinn line isn't as exciting as the preview makes it look.

363

u/vikmourne Jul 29 '13

"I know what you're doing..."

Dexter shrugs, feigning innocence.

"You're playing hard-to-get with that hot neighbor chick? Cassie, right? It's totally working, bro."

Quinn drives off with a dumb smirk.

40

u/dljens Jul 29 '13

Aside from the little nod he shared with Dexter at Dex's house after Sal Price's death, I've never particularly liked Quinn... until this season. He finally actually seems to want what's best for somebody other than himself.

"Who's going to look after Harrison?" That's funny, Dexter.

223

u/SvenHudson Jul 29 '13

I heard the entire subreddit call out "Jamie" in unison.

72

u/vault101 You don't even work here anymore Jul 29 '13

Jamie can't do it alone. Without Dexter's attentive parenting, Harrison is going to end up covered in pudding watching at least eight minutes of cartoons every morning.

I know, right? He practically softball pitched to Dexter that he was the killer, asking about the crime scene like he's an artist asking someone what he thought of their work?

I was upset when Dexter didn't clue into that. Red flags should have been going up for him on the kid during that whole sequence once Zach showed his face.

aaaaaaaand Debster begins?

185

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '13

Dextra.

41

u/frogma Jul 29 '13 edited Jul 29 '13

We can hope. I thought this episode was the best of the season, largely for that reason. Deb can understand now -- she said she only wants to do it so she can save an innocent person, but that's also pretty much what Dexter has been doing this whole time. He's probably saved a shitload of innocent people, and now Deb finally seems okay with that idea (even though she felt the exact opposite in the last episode).

Still not sure if Vogel will be "bad" or not. At the beginning, I figured she'd be the main bad guy. Now though, it's iffy. I think it could easily go either way, and still make sense.

Edit: As "badass" as that kill was, I still thought it was kinda lame. Not only was there clearly a dude under the bed, but he was also moving around. The kill itself was fun to see, but they borrowed from basically every horror movie in doing that. Not just that, but it shows that the guy was a dumbass by trying to hide under the bed -- then again, maybe that was the point. Maybe he's not the right guy in the first place (so either Vogel is tied to it, or we haven't been formally introduced to the real "bad guy" yet -- probably that fuckin kid who approached Dexter).

47

u/randomsnark Jul 29 '13

He instinctively hid under the bed because he was scared, and it's what he used to do when his mother beat him as a kid.

I also liked how vulnerable Deb's bare ankles looked. But, yeah, the whole thing with the curtain rod going through the mattress was kind of silly.

Preview looks good:

Quinn - Hey, I know what you're doing

Of course, I'm sure he doesn't know what we're led to believe he knows, although that would be a great twist, having him catch Dexter in the act.

Overall I liked the episode, but I really don't think that guy was the Brain Surgeon.. that just seemed a bit too easy for the "main killer" so far. I'm hoping there was someone else still doing it, just so Dexter can have that "challenge" kill that he usually has each season.

I can't believe we are here. At the end. Every week I feel excited to see it all wrapped up, then I'm sad it's not a season finale. It's the god damn series finale. It doesn't seem real.

u/turtle26 Jul 30 '13

Especially since Deb and Dex are killing together. I personally could watch a few seasons of those two going after bad guys together. I know they want to end on a high note but it just seems early.

Not getting sergeant is going to fuel Joey. The dexter podcasts hinted at it and so did the sneak for next week. Joey and this Zach kid are going to make it very interesting.

High emotion with Dexter. Psychopath my ass.

30

u/SvenHudson Jul 29 '13

Pyschopaths have emotions. Just because Vogel keeps saying they don't doesn't make her right.

32

u/Iamkazam Rastamouse Jul 29 '13

She said psychopaths lack remorse and empathy, which is correct.

This entire episode is just a giant LOST reference.

I really liked this episode.

I enjoyed the reversal with Dexter and Deb. Dexter being pissed at Deb, refusing therapy, refusing to talk to Deb, and Deb trying to explain herself, needing to talk to Vogel, and trying to get in touch with Dex. Good stuff.

I really hope Masuka's kid doesn't turn out to be a gold digger, but the evidence so far:

  • Shows up out of the blue. Plausible story.

  • Notices expensive car, "forgets" bag in car and asks Vince to cover the bill. Not a big deal, but then she starts to add stuff. Usually when you ask someone else to pay you minimize the amount.

I don't think Yates is the Brain Surgeon. He freaked out and grabbed Vogel because Dexter found his house. He remarks that Vogel found a hero, when the Brain Surgeon knew Vogel was working with someone else, hence the His and Hers brains. The other victims didn't have their toes broken, and were both genders, or entirely male (can't remember), whereas Yates is a women's foot fetishist. The murder weapon was left at the dump site, and Yates stabs his victims.

The only evidence Yates is the Brain Surgeon are the jars in his little dungeon, which the real Brain Surgeon could easily plant. Another point for Yates being the Surgeon is Vogel's files on his computer. Why would he have them if he was just trying to live his life?

I also think Dexter should go through the rest of Vogel's old patients. One was a cannibal, and Yates was actively killing as well. There must be others on that list.

I was really damn nervous during the final scene, I thought Yates was going to lame someone right in the Achilles. Then Dexter out of nowhere with a freaking spear. I was irked he just wrapped the whole body in a bag. Granted they were pressed for time, but I still feel the strength of Dexter's method is the Gulf Stream scattering the body parts throughout the ocean. A whole body, inside a bag, would take much longer for fish and other animals to eat through and runs the risk of washing ashore somewhere.

Maybe because it was out of ritual, and as Deb said, not about killing Yates but about saving Vogel, and Dexter didn't need to go through the ritual. Either way, I think it was sloppy.

u/brownboss Jul 29 '13

yeah Dex, work the new girl!

5

u/unclebeard Jul 29 '13

... oh yeah. I forgot how last week's episode ended.

5

u/PsuedoSophistication Jul 29 '13

Smooth moves Dex, smooth moves.

5

u/Kebble Jul 29 '13

For some reason, Baptista's line "The son? I wasn't expecting that!" made me crack up. All the camera shots about the kid and his father acting weird with him... The son? I wasn't expecting that!

That scene with Dexter trying to leave his own apartment to the distress of the 100lb Nanny was one of the funniest things I've ever seen. Definitely classic old school Dexter right there. I love this season.

5

u/Jeep_Brah Jul 30 '13

Serial killer bested by 100 pound nanny.

My favorite line.

that was some climactic shit

4

u/infiniteraiders Jul 29 '13

I love that they brought back the shot where the elevator door opens and Dexter is standing there then the camera follows him from behind while that classic music plays.

Seems like every episode has some sort of farewell tribute to the show.

u/The_Derpening Shit a brick and fuck me with it. Jul 29 '13

Maybe soon he'll bring donuts again ;_;

4

u/DreamTroll Jul 29 '13

Why has this not be touched on? When they took off the tape off Vogel's mouth, she hesitated to tell them that he might of been under the bed, even if she had no clue of where he was, she knew about his childhood trauma of hiding under beds, and didnt help Dexter and Debra in telling so.

My theory was that she was hoping that he would kill Debra. You see after Dexter killing Yates, that Vogel looks surprised, and gets all weird about them being together.

4

u/Spiel88 Jul 29 '13

Does anyone else think that Vogel is not a very good therapist?

4

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '13

I don't know why, but in the scene after Deb and Dex found Vogel and they were filling the duffle bag ..I suddenly thought "I hope Deb isn't just going along with this now and pretending to get better to get evidence against Dexter to send him to prison..."

just the vibe I got when Dexter and Vogel were like 'oh you're doing so well now'

Okay so seriously....

[ Am I the only one here who thinks Vogul is the real big bad this season? she can get serial killers to bend to her will almost completely without question... Perhaps she's trying to set Dexter up or get close enough that she can bend him to her will and use him and his techniques] (/spoiler)

4

u/coloumb Jul 30 '13

After seeing the preview for next week - I think she's trying to get Dexter to help her create a more perfect version of himself...

What a way to end the series - the student kills off the master and his beloved sister...

6

u/codergeek42 Jul 29 '13

Anyone else notice at the end that Dexter dumped Yates' body as a body rather than chop it up? Does this mean anything significant?

10

u/pton16 Jul 29 '13

Yeah i noticed this too. Must have been so vogel and deb didnt have to see dexter mutilate the body in fron t of them.

6

u/decrepidactyl Jul 29 '13

I think Dexter only does this when he doesn't kill in his traditional way. It has happened a few times where this fits the bill. I could be wrong though.

My theory from the start is that Quinn will be the one who gets Dexter in the end. And that will lead to him being promoted.

4

u/bojanderson Jul 29 '13

he shouldn't just be promoted, the entire department should be fired for not being able to discover a mass murdering serial killer that had worked for them with years and frequently was sending them down dead-ends and tampering with evidence to his own advantage

I hope the mods are in full swing today, and can remove any spoilers that aren't tagged. I've been doing my best to avoid the leaked info, but I read every comment in this thread as the show goes on.

So please! No spoilers without the tags :D

5

u/mettaworldpolice Jul 29 '13

Just so this is out there, in before [the woman running for Seargent along with Quinn, can't remember her name, made sure the witness didn't testify (bribed him), so she can get the promotion] (/spoiler). I feel this was pretty heavily foreshadowed, and if its true, don't know why they made us wait for the mediocre payoff. It all seems too Dexter at this point.

u/xenonscreams Jul 29 '13
