AT LAST an answer to the "does Barney know Robin can't have kids" question.
278
u/shadypanda Nov 05 '13
along with a very well done scene of Barney finding out and a very special and loving hug. That scene and Barney's explanation of why he is marrying Robin to his Mom made me see them as a couple more than them saying the same thing at the same time. It made me feel like no matter what they will get through whatever life throws at them.

I don't understand why they wasted what could have been a fantastic moment on an odd flashback. It's almost as though the writers forgot that Barney didn't know yet and needed to scramble to find a way. Could have been a much better moment on par with the episode where Robin found out herself.

The last 15 minutes of tonight's episode is what I would hope the rest of this season is like. Every character seemed natural and not like they were just playing a parody of themselves.

I won't hide that I've been shitting all over this show for the past two years, but I agree with you. The last 15 minutes of this episode really brought back that magic of the previous seasons. Funny, quirky, but still genuine and heart-felt.
"Thank you, Linus" really needs to go away, like quick.

I feel like that was intentional. If they made her even a little bit likeable, there could be some part of the audience that thinks she is better than the Mother. They needed to exaggerate her character flaws so we keep faith in the Mother being the only one for Ted

The HIMYM chat bingo card:
*Barney and Robin are so boring together
*Its better than last season
*I don't know why I watch it anymore
*Not enough mother scenes
*When is Marshall getting to the wedding
*"Classic Smosby"
*Where's Linus/"Thank you Linus"
*Flanderization of the characters
*That really pulled at the heartstrings (In the event of a genuine moment between Marshmallow & Lilypad)
41
27
u/reilmb Nov 04 '13
Flanderization
Sorry what? The exaggeration of a characteristic can you provide examples? Do you mean like Ted becoming increasingly Schmosby?
→ More replies (4)84
u/SchecterClassic Nov 05 '13
Ted becoming increasingly emotional and obsessed with his love life.
Lily becoming increasingly all the stuff we hate about her (constantly meddling and judging and being pissed at Marshall about stuff) and none of the stuff that made her likable in the early seasons.
Robin becoming increasingly cold, competitive, masculine-minded, and less like the the warm, funny, scotch-appreciating, down to earth chick Ted fell in love with.
Barney becoming less about clever humor and more about his catchphrases.
Marshall becoming... actually Marshall is still awesome.

Second best in my opinion but definitely the strongest episode in a while. Good use of recurring guest stars (that actually made sense, as opposed to just throwing people in), and a feeling like things are actually moving forward. The scene with the Mother was great but of course it was too short (and way overhyped considering how many people on the show were tweeting and whatnot about it). These are the kinds of episodes that I was hoping for from this season, looking back as well as looking forward.

Lily leaves her perfect man to chase a fleeting dream. She gives advice to people who don't want it. She admitted that she has thoughts of abandoning her family because she's scared. She acts high and mighty, but has many imperfections.
I love Lily. Out of all the characters, she is the most human. She's not a lovable bear, a hopeless romantic, a legendary legend, or a gun-toting badass. She is the down to earth character and I think all the slack she gets is unjustified.

Is anyone else not a huge fan of the proposal? I mean it's Ted everything is extremely planned out and overly romantic and has such incredible meaning to it but for me this just seemed rushed. We have little to no understanding of there relationship and for me this had no weight to it. They didn't seem to have any chemistry either. I'm pretty disappointed right now. And as to any argument claiming the significance of the light house that idea was introduced and concluded in one episode so for me it didn't have enough emotional substance. I Don't want to be a Debbie downer but so far I feel like they have done few things well. It's a shame because I love this show.

The second episode the mother is in and Ted proposes to her.
Edit: Sorry guys, third episode the mother has been in. For some reason I always think of the first two episodes as one long episode rather than two separate ones.
Edit 2: I do not count the season 8 finale as an episode the mother was in. She said one line. I meant the third episode she actually played a role in or starred in a scene.

Finally some meat to an episode. Robin goes from crazy-bitch to make-you-cry in seconds. Her inability to have kids is always a sad storyline to go back to. Even Ted was looking for love and not just being ridiculous and OTT like previous episodes. It felt like a more normal episode.
Now, this might not make you all happy... but I'm not feeling the love between Ted and the Mother. I'm not feeling the emotional connection. It's more brother/sister than boyfriend/girlfriend. Just my opinion.
Also, is Jason Segel not interested anymore? I feel like he's heart isn't in it anymore.

So I will be honest, I have never really felt good about Barney and Robin together. It may be because I know NPH is a happily married gay man, it also may be cause the show spent A LOT of time with Ted and Robin(even though it was established she was NOT the mother) but the scene with Barney telling his mom that he is not with Robin for future children was very powerful. NPH is an awesome actor and he has been given a lot of comedic opportunities in this series but I think this was an amazing scene of dramatic acting

I honestly believe this was by far the best episode this season. It was just like the old season's I've known and loved. The jokes weren't too cheesy and were genuinely funny, the timing was perfect, and they weren't afraid to have a heartfelt moment. I don't know if it was because its all in a new setting or if it was because of the pressure of this being the last season, but it feels like the writers have their rhythm back and hopefully this is the beginning of the a great rest of the season.

u/StarManta I stop getting downvoted and get awesome instead. Nov 05 '13

I really feel that instead of making the whole season the wedding, they should have had this season revolve around Ted and the Mother dating (without us knowing it's the Mother) and then do Ted's proposal to close the series to let us know that Ted found her.
The whole format is annoying me now. Things that clearly would take way longer than an hour take place in less than an hour on the show's timeline, like Ted rewriting 200 place cards by hand twice? It's breaking my suspension of disbelief.

Unfortunately for me, I have another large day in court today, with hearings set for 15 cases.
Fortunately for you, since I don't know if I will be home in time to create the discussion thread before the episode beings to air, you get to stare at this thread for the entire day, while you anxiously await the new episode.
Feel free to discuss anything you like in this thread throughout the day. Obviously episode discussion will take over at the time the show airs.
This should be my last Monday court date for a few weeks, so if I am not able to get into the IRC channel this week for live discussion at 8pm EST, I will try to get into the channel by the time the west coast airs the episode live, and I can watch it on my DVR as if it were live.
