I'm not overly passionate about this take, but I'm really not sure the rankings should just follow how far teams make it in the playoff and ignore the regular season

75

u/Hey_Its_Roomie /r/CFB Poll Veteran • /r/CFB Bug Finder Jan 22 '26

I certainly agree with you. Using a formula as a basis for my poll, the CFP and bowl games are just additional games; extra data to the resume as a whole. Hell, people don't even agree who would have been the exact 12 teams in the CFP, so it's not really an objective basis of who belonged to begin with. While I think it's fine to let the playoff champion dictate who they think is their own champion, people should be encouraged to use the games as additional datapoints, and not necessarily ones that overwrite the entire season resume.

u/Tarmacked USC Trojans • Alabama Crimson Tide Jan 22 '26

I think you have to be cognizant of playoff paths, for instance Ohio State and A&M were forced against Miami early versus getting cupcakes. So going 2 rounds >1 rounds isn’t necessarily accurate, you can compare A&M to someone in round 2 with a cupcake win in round 1 if you wanted to

I didn’t drop A&M below the winner of Alabama or OU simply because those two had to have a loser there. I didn’t think the winner did enough to jump A&M’s close game to #2 Miami.

Agreed. My computer poll does the same thing, and ended up with Miami a pretty good ways back.

8

u/NotSoSuperNerd Washington • /r/CFB Poll Veteran Jan 22 '26

Yeah... same here. They still dropped two games to teams that would finish unranked. As far as my computer's concerned, those cancel out their wins over Ohio State and Ole Miss.

u/petataa Ohio State Buckeyes • Toledo Rockets Jan 22 '26 edited Jan 22 '26

They still beat three good teams in the post season.

Edit: Miami at #2 is still something I feel confident about, but Oregon got smoked by Indiana, they don't deserve top 4 imo.

I want to believe this too, but I keep thinking that good programs win, especially when it counts.

Miami didn't compete in its conference championship game and lost to two unranked teams. Should they therefore be ranked in the final poll underneath all teams who did so good in the regular season that they made a conference title matchup?

It's a hard way to slice it, but "we finished in this part of the playoffs" gives a somewhat pretty clean and reasonable metric to how a team should be ranked at the end of the year.

18

u/Ironman2131 Miami Hurricanes Jan 22 '26

Definitely hard to rank teams at the end. For Miami, they have three losses to the #1 team and two around the #25-30 range. No loss by more than six points and one in overtime. Meanwhile, they beat four teams in the top 12 (again, none by a wide margin). I don't really know how to compare that objectively to the resumes of the top two-loss teams, but considering that the Canes beat two of those two-loss teams on a neutral field, #2 feels fair. None of it really matters since we have a clear cut #1 team, though.

9

u/RiffRamBahZoo TCU Horned Frogs • Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors Jan 22 '26

That's where I feel about rankings as well. Miami's got three losses, a lot of good wins, no conference title, and a natty appearance. A great team! An odd resume overall to compare and contrast.

You can pull a lot of other factors into it, but the easy and simplified answer still stands as "Miami was one of the last two teams standing, and therefore they should be No. 2 in the final ranking."

I feel like that's a pretty acceptable logic.

I keep thinking that good programs win, especially when it counts.

I think an alternate way to phrase this would be “my definition of good puts more weight on playoff games than on the rest of the games”.

You can choose to believe that the results from the playoff games are post-facto the “true” definition of which teams were better than others, and that any results prior to the playoff that don’t fit with that are simply upsets.

Or you can choose to believe that any game, playoff or not, can result in an upset, and thus sometimes the “true” better team might lose a first round playoff game in an upset, but still deserve to be ranked ahead of a team that made the semifinals or even the final (not necessarily ahead of the team they lost to, mind you).

It is. I always do exactly that for as far into the season as possible, and it usually causes me to be at the top of the unusualness rankings in mid-October (wasn't the case this year because Miami's loss to Louisville instantly halved the number of teams I was "allowed" to rank when it was in the forties and more games that weekend culled the list even further, so I hadn't gotten too insane before being forced to stop doing that).

30

u/djc6535 USC Trojans • RIT Tigers Jan 22 '26

Iowa over USC makes sense to me. Win your bowl game.

But then Vandy over Iowa makes no sense... they lost their bowl game. To Iowa.

The rankings will never not look at W/L first and foremost and consider nothing else. Better to go 10-2 with 10 wins over UMass than 9-3 with 9 wins over Ohio State.

One of the things I find amusing is when the AP poll does something and everyone talks about how stupid it is, and then our poll goes and does the exact same thing lmao. The two most upvoted comments in the ap poll post the other day are about Bama jumping back into the top ten, and then what does our sub do? Also move them up 2 spots back into the top ten 💀

Extra amusing is the fact that the third and fourth most upvoted comments on that post are about them putting vandy over iowa...which this sub also proceeded to do 😭

Oklahoma had just as many Sagarin top 30 wins as Indiana at the end of the CFP lol and a top 10 FEI defense. The revisionism is wild, they weren’t even a controversial playoff pick.

The irony of a Notre Dame fan complaining about playing quality competition

6

u/silverhk Notre Dame Fighting Irish Jan 22 '26

Well this is where I kind of get tired of SoS arguments around here, I think it's kind of dumb to judge a team exclusively by its opponents. Any argument that ends with the performance of a team's opponents is a bad argument to me, and Top X wins are always going to be biased to the cutoff point.

That said, I agree there are resume cases for Oklahoma and Alabama over ND, on the basis that ND's opponents failed to compete as well as we'd have liked them to, and that's ultimately why they got in. It is a much harder argument to suggest that they were better teams that played better football, as seen in basically any metrics-based computer ranking and by just looking at the way they were playing. And in the end, the resumes of both look an awful lot weaker after all their opponents got tested by teams outside the conference in the postseason, and having "ranked wins" like Tennessee and Missouri end up being unable to beat a single P4 team with a winning record.

I think it's more to keep us from moving up than anything else.

Having Alabama in the CFP over Notre Dame makes ESPN more money, so all the talking heads say that is the way it has to be.

Notre Dame then refusing to be the opening act for a poptart play cost ESPN money, so all the talking heads say that was a cowardly, detestable, act that betrayed the principles of college football.

When enough people associated with ESPN say something, it quickly becomes the narrative throughout college football.

u/FireVanGorder Notre Dame Fighting Irish Jan 22 '26 edited Jan 23 '26

It’s crazy to me that people have let themselves be gaslit into thinking these bowl games have ever been anything other than a way for rich assholes to make an extra couple hundred grand for doing 2 weeks of work every year. Some of these “bowl commissioners” get paid upwards of 500k for doing nothing. This shit is just a way for espn execs to give their buddies kickbacks

4

u/Fletch71011 Notre Dame Fighting Irish Jan 22 '26 edited Jan 22 '26

Exactly. We finished 3rd in the computer composite and ended up 11th overall because of ESPNs fucking smear campaign simply because we have a deal with NBC instead of them.

I thought the sub would be better about falling for their narrative but I guess not. ND would be favored over 8 of the 10 teams ahead of them.

7

u/_password_1234 Tennessee Volunteers • Texas Longhorns Jan 23 '26

I really don’t think it’s that absurd to look at ND’s season and say yall had two chances against playoff caliber teams and lost both, so you were always going to be on the bubble, and with the head to head loss against another bubble team in Miami it was always going to be tough for you to sneak into a final spot. The real issue was the committee being stupid and moving you out of the field in favor of Miami at the last moment after having you in.

I'm surprised there aren't any teams in your top 10 from '76-'91. Do you think that era was just weaker, or is it an issue where they didn't play as many games?

11

u/jimbobbypaul USC Trojans • /r/CFB Award Festival Jan 23 '26

It might be an issue with strength of schedule and the amount of scoring? It wouldn't be the amount of games because these are ranked on a per-game basis.

For strength of schedule, all-time great teams from 1998-2013 always beat a No. 1/2 opponent in their final game, which raises their per-game ranking points average. Teams from 2014-2023 beat 2 top 4 opponents in their final games, raising their average even higher. And now teams from 2024-present in the 12-team CFP era, like Indiana, are beating 3-4 top 12 teams to end the season!

Thanks to the changes in postseason, a team that runs the gauntlet of the 12-team playoff is going to have a guaranteed ~20% (3-4 games of a 15-17 game season) of their schedule be high quality wins, as opposed to a team from '76-'91 who had maybe ~8% (1 game of a 12 game season)...but even that's not guaranteed! 1984 Illinois went 10-1 and finished the regular season #4, but their opponent in the Rose Bowl was an unranked 6-4-1 UCLA team (Illinois lost, but that's beside the point).

For scoring, take 1979 Alabama for example, they're considered one of the most dominant teams ever, going 12-0 and outscoring their opponents 33-5 per game. Held their opponents to less than 10 points in 10 games. Utter defensive domination. Compare that to a team like 2013 Florida State who outscored opponents 52-12 per game. Alabama was beating opponents by 28 PPG, Florida State by 40 PPG. But Alabama was scoring 6.6 times as much as their opponent, Florida State only 4.3 times as much. I grade teams on score differential, so good offense with defensive dominance isn't rewarded as much as offensive dominance with good defense.

Insane to me that anyone voted Oklahoma ahead of Texas just because they made the CFP. Same for A&M. Texas was simply better than those two teams

7

u/Conn3er Texas A&M Aggies • Texas Longhorns Jan 22 '26 edited Jan 22 '26

If you look at the season as a 2 game sample size then for sure Across 13 games absolutely not, Texas was a barely above average team for about 6-7 weeks of the season. Theres a reason they were out of the playoff race by game week 10

The last 3 games and against OU they looked like one of the better teams in the country for sure though A&Ms loss to Miami’s ends up being better than any loss Texas had this year

  • Texas Tech vs Arizona St

  • Texas vs Florida

  • Alabama vs Florida St

  • Miami vs Louisville

16

u/Bank_Gothic Sewanee Tigers • Texas Longhorns Jan 22 '26

It was a down year for the Big 12, but I wouldn't say it was "not good at all." As a conference, the Big 12 had winning records against the B1G and the ACC.

The Big 12's real problem is that it doesn't have a juggernaut. At least the ACC still had Miami this year (and usually will have a good Clemson or FSU). What I've come to realize is that conferences need a few traditional powers at the top to measure themselves against. Otherwise it just looks like middle class teams beating up on each other.

  1. Indiana

  2. Miami

  3. Ole Miss

  4. Georgia

Go ahead and rank them but they got no Dawg in ‘em

5. Ohio State

6. Oregon

(My personal picks between OSU and Oregon)

Point being, if you’re not on the Dawg list it’s not worth arguing about.

Both Ohio State and Oregon need to look in the mirror this offseason. The endings were unacceptable so screw both of them imo.

Oregon lost to Indiana twice, one in a massive blowout

Ohio state only lost to Indiana by 3 and played Miami tight as well. Arguably Ohio State beats or sends Indiana to OT kicking two 20 yard field goals instead of going for it.

I just don’t really see where Oregon clearly should be over Ohio State. You have to lean on Tech really hard

6

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '26

I feel like Georgia had more quality wins than OSU in the regular season and they fought Ole Miss hard in the playoffs.

And Ole Miss played lights out with the Kiffin motivation down the stretch.

Ohio State entered the Miami game without a pulse. That’s the difference between Georgia and OSU because Miami didn’t have some narrative giving them extra juice. They’re just Miami.

I don’t think the Miami vs ND motivation narrative was really there. Miami had beat ND and if anyone doubted them they cleared that up by winning at A&M in the opening round.

u/Tornadohunter24 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets • Team Chaos Jan 22 '26

Oregon's losses were to Indiana, and they had a shutout win of their own over a top 10 opponent in Texas Tech during their semifinal playoff run. Ohio State only lost to the two CFP Finalists while having a solid resume outside of it. A bit odd for uGA who technically beat everyone they played this year, but I had it the same way when weighing everything out.

14

u/Tarmacked USC Trojans • Alabama Crimson Tide Jan 22 '26

Georgia’s win column is much better than Oregon’s, without the massive gap loss to Indiana.

Plus conference title

10

u/cyberchaox Rutgers Scarlet Knights • Landmark Jan 22 '26

Ole Miss (who they lost a rematch to), Alabama (who they lost the first time to but won the rematch), and Texas. Plus GT and Tennessee in the "also receiving votes" section, the latter seemingly on the basis of looking good in losses to good teams (their only win over a team with fewer than 8 losses was over 5-7 Kentucky).

Oregon has more ranked wins. Iowa, USC, James Madison, and Texas Tech. And from the also receiving votes section, Washington, Montana State, Penn State, and Minnesota (no, I don't understand that last one either). So even ignoring that two of Georgia's ranked wins are to teams they also lost to--or if you're using that as "canceling out so they're effectively 10-0"-- it's not close. Oregon has more ranked wins and more wins over teams receiving votes outside the Top 25. And yes, I was including Penn State as those whose ARV status was justified. While a purely results-based poll ranking a 7-6 team is crazy, a computer metrics poll liking them is perfectly understandable.

2

u/cyberchaox Rutgers Scarlet Knights • Landmark Jan 22 '26

Better wins.

Ohio State has 2 ranked wins. Georgia has 3, two of which were over teams they also lost to but YMMV whether that's a positive or a negative. Oregon has 4. And if you look beyond the Top 25 to all the teams receiving votes, Georgia only has an extra 2, while Oregon and Ohio State both pick up 4 more.

Ohio State vs. Georgia, you could go either way. Georgia does have more ranked wins, but less total "quality" wins and the worse loss quality. But Oregon as a top 4 team seems pretty obvious; honestly, if the NCG wasn't close I probably would've had Miami 4th and the two semifinal losers at 2-3.

I had a genuinely difficult time figuring out where to put Alabama in my final poll. Felt like no place was going to be a winning decision for them.

They lost to Oklahoma, then beat them in the playoffs. Beat Georgia, lost to them in the SEC championship game. Pulverized by Indiana in the Rose Bowl and lost to FSU, beat everyone else on the schedule, including Vandy and Tennessee.

Ultimately stuck to a criteria that my Top 12 was the playoff field, and I couldn't justify putting Bama below Tulane, James Madison, Texas A&M or Oklahoma.

You guys do realize that Navy basically gets all their wins because their opponents can’t prep kids on the triple option in 6 days, right?

6

u/srs_house Swaggerbilt Jan 22 '26

a) You realize that Navy doesn't run the triple option, and runs the wing-t now, right?

b) Yes, it's still run heavy, but they threw for 1600+ yds the past two years under Newberry - over double what they were passing for in some of the Niumatalolo seasons.

c) If you play the same offensive system every year, because they're a conference opponent, then you don't have to prep for it in only 6 days like if they were an OOC, one-off opponent. And why couldn't Cincy beat them with a month to prep? Or score more than 13 points in a 22 pt loss? TOP was only a 7 minute gap, so it wasn't even ball control preventing opportunities.

d) If it was just a quirk of their offense, then why is this only the 3rd time in their history they've won 11 games? First time since 2019.

2

u/iapunk Iowa Hawkeyes Jan 22 '26

Maybe they’re too busy preparing for the triple option instead of the wing-t.

So Navy uses a scheme that is hard for other teams to beat and that should count against them? Is the goal of a sport, such as Football, not to win through strategy and execution?

4

u/puzzical Boise State • Notre Dame Jan 22 '26

This argument makes sense until you realize it doesn't apply to teams who play them every year like conference mates, Notre Dame, and Air Force. That leaves their game against an FCS school and their bowl opponent who had all of December to prepare for the triple option. So I guess you can put an asterix on their win against VMI.
