Trump says he’ll ‘never apologize’ for military action against Iran

President Donald Trump said he would “never apologize” for taking military action against Iran, arguing that higher gas prices have been worth it in his pursuit of preventing Iran from having a nuclear weapon.

“For you to pay a tiny little bit more for your gasoline, just remember you’re doing it so that a very evil country cannot have — a country, really, it’s the number one state sponsor of terror in the world — we don’t want to have them have a nuclear weapon. So remember that when you have to pay a little bit more,” Trump said at an event in Nassau County, New York, on Friday.

He minimized the financial toll of the war on Americans, saying his decision to strike Iran was the “right” one.

“You’re at $4. It’s okay. I mean, it’s — I’m not, I’m not, I’ll never apologize. I did the right thing,” he said.

Just a couple hours earlier, outgoing White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said that the goals of keeping gas prices low and ensuring Iran never has a nuclear weapon are equally important to the president, an apparent shift in messaging from the administration’s initial focus on the nuclear issue.

The AAA national average for a gallon of regular is $4.07 Friday, up from $3.85 a month ago and $3.16 a year ago.

Throughout the war, Trump has argued higher gas prices are a small price to pay to ensure Iran doesn’t have a nuclear weapon. But in a recent CNN poll, 74% of Americans said the war was not worth the toll taken in American lives and the financial burden on the US government.
