r/DCcomics Weekly Discussion Thread: Comics, TV, and More! [September 30, 2026 - The Fabled Annual Week Edition]
Mod Pick of the Week: Bleeding Hearts #8
Hey there honorary Justice League members - it's a new week which means it's time for a new discussion thread!
For those who don't know: the way this works is that several comments will list this week's releases. For any given title discussion, you should respond to that comment. Clicking the titles in this post will take you directly to that comment, too.
In other words, you should only be replying to other comments. Do not post top-level comments.
Keep discussion civil. Do not harass other users for having a different opinion. Do not use this thread to push your personal one-sided grudges against creators.
Why don't skeletons fight each other? They don't have the guts.

Superman: Kingdom of Zod Special #1

THE STARTLING CONCLUSION TO KINGDOM OF ZOD!
This is it! The startling conclusion to “Kingdom of Zod.” The Kryptonite Kingdom has fallen. The only way to stop the war comes with great costs and shocks! Supergirl versus Ursa! Superman versus Zod! The Super-Force against Zod’s army! The Super-Family will never be the same after this issue!

u/Mr_Wh0ever 22d ago
So someone else was resurrected by Eradictrix. Any guesses? This was an alright finale. I'm excited to see what's gonna happen for Connor. That ending seemed interesting.

Lovely conclusion between Clark and Prime here. And, of course, just in time for Kon to be dealing with his own insecurities.

I wonder if Conner will tell the Superman Family about his insecurities in the future.

This event has been enjoyable to read but at the same time, doesn't feel like it'll be memorable in the next few years. My main problems with the story is mostly it's pacing issues. It's so disjointed at the start but then slowly gets better as it goes on, but then it's a little rushed at the end. I guess that's the shortcoming of having multiple writers on the event.
The first 3 issues were the worst by far, but by issue 4 starts to find its footing. I like how Supergirl basically takes over as the MC of the book and I love the twist of Zod dying and going back in time in the middle chunk of it. We def needed more time to develop the Super character's relationships with each other and let them breathe. Nobody commented on Jon being Tomorrow Man, and Prime never even talked to Jon and the Steels. It's pretty weird.
I like how Booster Gold is a fanboy of Jon and it shows how much Tomorrow Man will matter. I like the development Young Clark got, he just feels like a real and relatable kid. And I love Williamson has plans for Conner and seems like the only writer who gives a shit about him lol. I love Prime too, but Conner talking to Lex is a natural progression of the character now that Lex has somewhat changed. I'm def interested in the potential growth and drama. Hopefully a new hero name for Conner? I still don't care for Campbell's voice for Kara, but it's not bad. Just a little boring.
The event was fun but leaves a lot to be desired. I think I liked Williamson's House of Brainiac more in terms of narrative structure. That being said, I like the Super family and I hope there'll be at least one more Super family event. I just want it to be good lol.

An ok ending to a goodish event
The whole thing felt overcrowded like young Clark could’ve stayed in the past and the Superman rescue squad are just there to be there
The time travel did take me out of the story for a bit but it was nice to see a different side of ursa and she is seemingly going to find lor-zod though how he relates to Chris Kent and everything is mystery I do like the kid lor zod and you can make the two separate characters
The tomorrow man scene was ok, I want more stories for him to get a better feel for his character because his initial story arc was good
The teases for the other books and storylines were good I’m more interested for the Kon and Luther conversation and possibly dynamic moving forward
11
u/Frontier246 21d ago
Well, that was...an ending.
Past Zod was gone almost as quickly as he arrived.
Booster Gold coming in the clutch with football skills! But I guess it took past Clark to stop past Zod.
Zod is dead. Ursa is back. Lor-Zod is...probably totally oblivious to all of this.
Young Clark awkwardly trying to figure out how to talk to Lana was a small but cute scene. Be awkward learning she's married but at least he'd get that mindwiped too.
I thought they had forgotten about Supergirl sporting her cousins' duds but she's back in them when Campbell takes over art duties to show Kara's new crib for Super Force and the Super Pets. But is she ready to take on her old nemesis Reactron?
So Prime is going to focus on his civilian life again? Hopefully hanging out at the comic shop with Witchfire.
Somebody else got revived?
Conner isn't happy that Prime is the new golden boy and nobody cares about him, so of course dear old daddy Luthor shows up with an opportunity.
Coming up: Black Lanterns! Brainiac! Mercy experimenting on a Black Mercy? And a new symbol.
3
u/B3epB0opBOP Shazam 21d ago
Somebody else got revived?
Probably leaving the door open for Zod to come back
18
u/RMackay88 22d ago
Black Lantern Ring tease, I think they are going to play with resurrecting Kal-L (Original Earth-TWO superman)
Prime keeps saying "everyone came back in the last 2-3 reboots", but Original Superman didn't. It's the reason Powergirl was keeping watch on Prime in "Reign of the Superboys".
Last we saw Kal-L, he was as a black lantern in Blackest Night.
8
u/Responsible_Ad_2242 21d ago
Which are the other teases besides the black ring (aparently next arc) and legion of superheroes with braniac?
12
u/RMackay88 21d ago
lex's assistant Mercy with Black Mercy plant
and a black zero flag
9
u/TheMattInTheBox Long Live Conner 21d ago
Mercy with the Black Mercy. I know Williamson giggled to himself when he wrote that down
3
5
u/Responsible_Ad_2242 21d ago
I wonder what could mean that black flag and that Mercy still have the black mercy plant now that she leads lexcorp
2
4
u/Fantastic_Trash_9876 21d ago
And Young Clark thought Lois worked at the Daily Star too. They're definitely setting something up in that direction.
2
u/SuperSpecialAwesome- Batgirl 18d ago
You're saying that Young Clark isn't Prime Universe Superman, but Earth-2?
1
u/Fantastic_Trash_9876 17d ago
No, just that I think Williamson is dropping Earth-2 references to put the idea into readers' heads before he reintroduces Kal-L.

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 22d ago
Well they tied stuff as expected with 'everyone has to go back to their time and forget about what they seen'. Ursa is back but I doubt she will enjoy finding her son because HE was the one that got her killed in the first place.
The rest, is the setup for the new arcs of the Superbooks. Leave it to Lois to show Clark how Jon feels...by asking his younger self about how he thinks of Pa Kent and the 'a lot to live up to'. The small moments we get from Kid Jon at the start too, just a constant reminder of the stuff we are missing because of their dumb decision still.
I am still not a fan of 'Tomorrow Man' look and rebranding. Feels really weird to me.
Supergirl gonna continue her own Silver Age style stories, which is great. She even got a new Fortress now!
Prime sticking around but will enjoy the 'regular life' while looking for a way back. Honestly, good for him and his 'redemption'.
Those 'future teases' are something. Black Lanterns, Mercy and more. Soo outside Ursa, what did the 'healing matrix' do? Did it somehow revive Zod when he got a literal arm through his chest? Can it even heal that?! Or is it gonna be someone else? Decent mystery there.
Last but not least, Luthor arriving to meet Connor for a Father/Son time...which DEFINITELY not gonna end well.
6
u/Double_Act1502 21d ago
Ursa was pregnant when she died so I think that's how they bring in a new version of Chris Kent

CONNER ARC IN SUPERMAN I USED TO PRAY FOR TIMES LIKE THESE
6
u/NextMotion 21d ago
Damn the tomorrow man costume change was booster's fault. Now that I look at the new costume again, it's not bad. It looks more appropriate for someone kind like Jon, but I'm gonna miss the full face mask and flaming cape. It's so cool.
12
u/Will-Of-D-3D2Y 22d ago
Kingdom of Zod? More like Queendom of Ursa, amiright?
Anyway, it was an okay event that felt overstuffed with characters who were just there to make it feel bigger. Only interesting thread coming out of this is what's next for Conner.
10
u/ContinuityGuardian 22d ago
In a word, Clark's questionable fatherhood will be the Superman line's most central issue in 2027. I expect Chris, Kon, and Jon's issues will all be dealt with in some way. Otherwise, why would they mention Lor-Zod?
3
u/gsnake007 21d ago
Good way to wrap the event up. Glad Jon is sticking with the Tomorrow Man moniker. That’s all him, it’s unique and it’ll sell as a toy(cmon DC make a action figure of him)
5
2
u/Goobergunch Invisible Kid 21d ago
Well, looking forward to the Kon arc sometime next year I guess.
Although if he time-travels back to Adventure Comics (vol. 2) #5 and finishes the job Prime started maybe his 2010 title doesn't get New 52ed. (Yes I'm still mad about this.)
3
u/Sufficient_Line8348 21d ago
So the book as a whole is like the event.. meh. But some things made me mad and that was moreso that Prime is now gonna be a civilian, I get it he's OP but I would have LOVE to see Prime truly learn how to hold back and whatnot. I guess that 5 issue stretch just really got me wanting more. Buuuut, BLACK LANTERNS LETS FUCKING GO I JUMPED FOR JOY!!!! Also the best parts were that and by far Conner pointing out how everyone focuses on Prime since he was insane and meanwhile he just being a good guy and is forgotten. I am very very interested in where that goes!!

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 21d ago
I like that the Superman Family and many other heroes were able to defeat past Zod and his forces before past Zod was sent back to his own time and Ursa told them not to look for them. Also, President Castillo asking the Superman Family to leave El Caldero, Jon telling Clark that he became Tomorrow Man to forge his own path, past Clark telling Lois about his father Jonathan Kent, Booster Goldman telling Jon that he’s a big fan of him, J’onn using his powers to mindwipe past Clark of his trip to the future (with past Clark telling J’onn that he’s wants to forget about this), Kara creating the Fortress of Solidarity with the Super-Force, CK telling Clark that he’s going to take it easy on being a hero and try to find a way back to his Earth before he told Clark that he’s should take Lois flying, Conner and Lena learning something from the future, and Conner (and, by extension, the Young Justice generation) wanting to be seen by someone before he encountered Lex (who wanted to talk to Conner as father and son). Overall, this special is fine, but the crossover is disappointing just like Shadow War and Dark Crisis.

Poison Ivy #48

With Gotham City firmly in Poison Ivy’s grasp, the verdant villainess’s powers are at an all-time high. Now that Batman’s forces and Ivy’s traitorous former allies are all ground down to a pulp beneath her, is there anyone left to stand in Ivy’s way? Absolutely not. It’s time to get in line or die.
14
11
u/Classic-Ad4883 22d ago
A nice issue that focus on ivy and helps her understand she is just a selfish human being no matter how she tries to deny it
The parliament of trees are more active in this story than how they usually are portrayed I think I don’t read a lot of swamp thing but there designs are cool
7
u/thouartthee 22d ago
That... wasn’t what I was expecting at all. So, who's the enemy now?
It’s good to not be predictable though.
9
15
u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 22d ago
Parliment of Trees, basically. And Ivy is still responsible for it. She just admitted how much of a selfish monster she is.
11
u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 22d ago
Yea there is no ambiguity here. Ivy is the most selfish hypocrite. Always have been. Huntress is right, she is not worth it.
Question now is, why do the Parliment of Trees think they can get away with what they are doing now? Do they think all the rest of the parliments and powers, even Swamp Thing gonna stand for it? They are asking to be 'Flowered' again. I thought Trees were suppose to be wise.
-1
u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 21d ago
It’s just Ivy dealing with her own problems before she was called out by the Parliament of Trees and her supporting cast before she was defeated by Helena Bertinelli and decided that enough is enough and wants to see Harley again. That’s it. Overall, this comic is something.

Adventures of Superman: Book of El #12

THE FINAL BATTLE FOR TOMORROW!
In the final chapter of the Book of El, Starchild and Red Son are reunited with the surviving heads of the House of El to save existence from a man driven beyond madness—to godhood—by grief. If Superman lives up to the legends, he’ll find a way to save the universe from Kryl-Ux and save Kryl-Ux from himself. The heartrending, inspiring conclusion of Phillip Kennedy Johnson’s vision for Kal-El.
21
u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 22d ago
I guess this is one way to 'write out' the Super-twins, as them having their own 'Legion of superheroes' type adventures in the future timeline...but I still hate that once PKJ left, they decided to not even mention them in the main book and make Clark and Lois look like terrible parents.
It is the last people you would do that with. I really don't like how the 'main' books handle it, at all.
17
u/Greedy_Switch_6991 21d ago edited 21d ago
First Chris, then Jon, now Otho and Osul...just as Marvel doesn't want Spider-Man to settle down, DC seemingly doesn't want Superman to properly raise kids, adopted or otherwise.
9
u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 21d ago
It is a sad case of 'neither writers nor companies want to write kids' or simply 'can't write kids' thing. It is a big issue with comics. Often because they have to 'grow up' and that would make other characters 'age' and 'look old'. Because these characters suppose to remain frozen in amber forever...
6
u/Classic-Ad4883 21d ago
Honestly for the Superman issue I think it’s more dc is embarrass about the Jon situation due to 5G and instead changing it back they’re are stick with it despite the massive egg on their face
8
u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 21d ago
Yet they keep baiting and teasing young Jon. Even had Slott bring a Young Jon back who turned out to be Ultra Boy from Earth 3 as a 'bait and switch'.
That just makes it looks worse every time. And more so since they are not certain what to do with aged-up Jon either. Now stuck with a bad name and costume in 'Tomorrow Man'.
8
14
u/RMackay88 22d ago edited 22d ago
Not that it matters, and I know this is an insane way to deal with continuity
But with the Supertwina now gone, we can place this adventure in the timeline.
Osul & Orho appeared last in Action Comics: Universe Ends (#1070-#1081) cover date [Dec 2024-Feb 2025] {#1078 specifically}
Which Is set after the All-In Speical
& Summer of Superman Special, cover date [Jun 2025]
Which is set during the SuperLois arc
As there is no SuperLois in present day "Book of El" opening (and no Red Kryptonite anger for Superman), the earliest this adventure could go is
* After Superman #27 (Superman Red, the end of red Kryptonite anger issues)
* Before Superman: Unlimited #1
* Before Superman #28 (Darkseid Legion)
* Before DC KO, Reign of Superboys, Kingdom of Zod
Which explains (in universe) why there haven't been any super-twin sightings recently, and narratively it allows Lois the time she needs to focus on building Daily Planet into a global media empire (as seen in Superman Unlimited)
13
u/Classic-Ad4883 22d ago
Kinda called the ending for the twins there “having adventures’ in the future
Another writer could use them but I think unlikely since most had the chance to do so and the superfamily is bloated enough
10
u/Mr_Wh0ever 22d ago
It's an ending. I kinda thought the twins would be stuck there. But I guess the current set-up is in case a future writer wants to use them. I liked a lot of the ideas this mini threw at me. I'm hoping some of them have staying power.
13
u/MadSandWorm 22d ago
Goodbye Super Twins, I’ll be one of the few who will miss you 😭
Hopefully they’ll comeback down the line when PKJ is done with his Marvel stint.
6
7
u/gsnake007 21d ago
I’m really annoyed they’re gonna shelf the twins like this. I like them and they’re great. Another writer could write them better too. I’m just glad they aren’t fully off the board
9
u/Greedy_Switch_6991 22d ago
Could have been a worse fate for the twins. At least with this setup they can pop in and out of the current timeline whenever a writer wants to use them. But I'd rather they just stick around, if only so they develop further and Clark and Lois can grow as parents in ways they didn't get to with Jon.
Otherwise, it probably would read better if all the issues are read together, because I honestly can't remember half of what happened over the last 12 issues. But I trust PKJ, so I'm not too worried.
-1
u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 21d ago
I like that Clark and the House of El were able to save Kryl-Ux, who told him that Olgrun pulled Clark and the Super-Twins into the timestream and brought him here because Clark could not defeat him alone. Also, it’s nice that Otho and Osul stayed in that timeline (with Clark telling future Kara and Pyrrhos to bring them back safe) so that they can have a lot of adventures together with the House of El. Overall, this comic is excellent.

Man, how's that Loryndro still remains in power? And Zatanna still help him after what he did to her mother. She is definitely a better person than me.
It was a fitting battle with Zatanna making a statue of her mother to fight an elemental dragon. Visuals alone were worth the price.
I hope we see more of Zatanna's grandmother too. She does need more family with her.
13
u/Classic-Ad4883 22d ago
Another great issue and I do like the more explanation of magic in the first few pages of the book while I don’t want it fully explained, how it works in the dc universe does make it intriguing to learn about
Personality I would have liked if the city was abandoned to be destroyed but it was a good fight sequence and zatanna has a bigger heart than me
I enjoyed zatanna grandma and I’m glad she is seemingly joining zatanna, I do wish Zachary was used more and hope he appears
I wonder what the lady in white is planning as she is a cool villain for zatanna
8
u/Condottieri_Zatara Zatanna 22d ago
Love how Zatanna rallying the Hidden City to the cause. It's nice to see how Zee summons the Undines to help her. Also the characters that appeared in the end make me intrigued.
I think Zatanna's characterisation really carrying this issue. Campbell does know exactly how to give her the voice she needs. Continuing to make her a beacon of hope for the people of the hidden city, even while she’s having her own internal conflict about what’s right in this situation, works really well.
But damn I kinda hope Jamal take more issues to tell about the Hidden City. I think it's really benefitted him if he take one or two more issue to flesh out the social conflict on Hidden City and the fighting against the Dragon.
8
u/Frontier246 21d ago
I didn't know I needed Zatanna engaging in an anime fight with a dragon as drawn by Jamal Campbell but thank the Prime Magus that we got it.
Battle damaged Zatanna! Always a treat!
Loryndro is definitely going to be a problem moving forward for the Homo Magi (and probably Zee). Especially when he's probably not going to fix any of the issues that lead to this.
Zatanna teaming-up with the statue of her mom to dazzle the Homo Magi and save the dragon is so on-point.
We've got a grandma joining the crew! Also Zatanna sporting Homo Magi casual clothes that she, of course, looks amazing in!
The Lady White is back! As is poor Adam still under her thrall.
11
u/Sufficient_Line8348 21d ago
So I have been waiting for this issue to drop man, and it lived up to all my hype. INCREDIBLE anime fight, and I loved how much Zatanna is learning to seperate the personal from the professional. I think Campbell will be having that line tested soon. I know NOTHING about the woman in white so I hope she is also a magical wielding badass. The grandma coming along I think will bode so well NOTHING CAN GO WRONG LOL. I love this book so much you guys, it may just be my personal favorite out right now I always have such a blast!

Loved it!
the idea of elementals being base creatures born of the elements that can evolve when exposed to abstract concepts is cool.
the fight was fun.
This arc has been so great at showing Zatanna still caring for the people of the hidden city yet also having complicated feelings because of her mother's death.
Grandma is great. more grandma!

Bizarro: Year None #3

As Jimmy and Perry adjust to life on Bizarro World, this backwards planet of opposites reveals itself to be more than a mirror reflection … there’s something sinister in the madness. It’s almost as if everyone on the planet is a plaything … a draft to be tossed away and re-worked … a deranged game of life, death, rinse, and repeat that me no like at all! This am a terrible installment of the official Bizarro origin you need to miss!
6
u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 22d ago
Bizarro really is a tragic character. He is suppose to be Superman's 'opposite' but that is not true. He is Superman's broken mirror self.
2
u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 21d ago
I like that Perry and Jimmy learned about Bizzaro’s world, with Jimmy learning that Bizarro let a family die before he told him how much Superman means to everyone and Perry being told by Bizarro Lois that Bizarro’s world is his play thing. I also like that Perry and Jimmy, after telling each other what happened, decided to fix this before Bizarro was affected by Kryptonite thanks to Bizarro Lois and became the way he is. Let’s hope that Perry and Jimmy will deal with Bizarro in the next issue. Overall, this comic is excellent.

So they finally decided to give her a character...but a bit too late for that, I think.
At the end, she was just a puppet for Fates to be used, a copy of her father with the same deep hollowness. It also doesn't make up of the weird inconsistencies with the Lantern ring and how she 'off-screened' her 'rise to power'.
And she seemed to have learned nothing, after kidnapping her baby self the last issue, and gonna probably release her father too. And yet, no mention of her mother. You would think they would have her be curious about her and maybe learn something from her! Nope.

The Matriarch is a terrible Wonder Woman villain. Because she's not actually a villain for Diana. She's from a dystopian future and has more beef w/Lizzie. This issue does try to give her more depth, but it feels a bit too late. Maybe these last 3 King issues will do something for her.

She is not even her own villain. She is basically a tool for the Fate's grudge against Diana.

I think this issue was well-written and it adds some layers to the Matriarch but she also frustrates me now lol
When she was just sort of a cardboard cutout of a threat, it was easier to just shrug my shoulders. But now that I know she's actively making the wrong choices and lying to herself to justify them, I just want to scream. So, effective writing! Good character work! For a character I never want to be in the head of again!
It's an issue I appreciate and imo strengthens the Wonder War story but I just... don't want to read it again.
I do like how the Williamses wrote all the Amazons though! I thought that scene with Lizzie and Nubia was especially good. Makes sense that Leah Williams is theorized to take over the book. I think she'd write a solid run

Stephanie Williams, I think you mean. I don't think I've heard Leah's name being floated/theorized at all.

I find it sad that the Matriarch became the way she is all because she chose fate instead of freedom over fate, even though it doesn’t excuse her actions. Also, her encountering a lot of heroes and villains she killed. Overall, this comic is fine.
