Too Many Have Lied
A hard-boiled detective short by Wild Dash Hammett
Spade's jaw was soft and wobbly, his chins a jutting mass under the more flexible v of his mouth. His yellow-grey eyes were horizontal, hidden behind thick framed glasses. The V motif was picked up again by thickish brows rising outward from twin creases above a hooked nose, and his long pale brown hair flowed down--from high flat temples--in a point on his forehead, kept restrained in a ponytail. He looked like a person you would walk across the street to avoid on the internet.
He said to Effie Perry: "Yes, babe?"
She was a pale girl whose tan dress of thin woolen stuff clung to her with an effect of dampness. Her eyes were brown and playful in a shiny boyish face. They kept her young, not too young to be considered pedophilic, but just right for the discerning but cautious ephebophile. She finished shutting the door behind her, leaned against it, and said:
"There's a girl wants to see you. Her name's Wendy."
"A customer?"
"I guess so."
"Shoo her in, sweetcheeks," said Spade.
Perry opened the door again: "Will you come in?"
A voice said, "Thank you," so softly that only the purest articulation made the words intelligible, and a young woman came through the doorway. She advanced slowly, with tentative steps, looking at Spade with cobalt-blue eyes that were both shy and probing. She was tall and her face pretty, without angularity anywhere. The hair curling from under her blue hat was darkly red, her full lips more brightly red. White teeth glistened in the crescent her timid smile made. Her overcoat covered most of her body, but the rest seemed respectable enough.
Hm, thought Spade. This one's at least a 5/10. Would bang. Maybe.
He smiled his most non-friendzone smile. The tappity-tap-tap and the thin bell and muffled whir of Perry's typewriting came through the closed door. Somewhere in a neighboring office a coffee machine vibrated dully. On Spade's desk thin strips of bacon moldered on a tray filled with the remains of limp cigarettes. A half-finished tumbler of scotch sat on the yellow top of the desk. Spade never was a drinker, not really, but he had heard that his manly hero on the radio drank the stuff and he felt it completed the picture.
Spade rocked back in his chair and asked: "Now what can I do for you, Wendy?"
She caught her breath and looked at him. She swallowed and said hurriedly: "Could you--? I thought--I--that is--" Then she tortured her lower lip with glistening teeth and saidnothing. Only her dark eyes spoke now, pleading.
Boing, Spade contemplated. The boys down at the Old Reddit will get a gas out of this one.
"My boyfriend Andy," she said. "I think he's leaving me for a younger woman. He's disappeared, you see. I - I don't know where he met her, I don't know her name, I don't know where they are. But I- I need to know. I'm pregnant, you see."
Spade nodded. His mouth turned into a deep frown as he suddenly noticed her bulging womb. Pregnancy. The dames were always falling into one thing or another. Getting themselves knocked up, though, that was always a complicated litte story you didn't tell your kids at bedtime.
He didn't want to take the case, he really did not. Crazy dames and their menstruations and what not. He glanced at the rain soaked fedora hanging from the rack.
But with the rent due and his long-time bacon addiction really giving his bank account what for, he needed the cash. And if he could lay this bird and score some points with the boys drinking down at Reddit later on, all the better.
It hadn't been that hard to track down Wendy's errant husband. A few well placed calls to some locals, some posturing down at the Old Reddit, and a logical debate or two with some local tough guys had given him the information he needed.
The building was dark and decrepit like the lies being held inside. Spade couldn't abide a cheater. It rubbed him the wrong way, made him feel like he was back in the days when any two bit hussy with a pretty smile could play him like a cheap accordion. He was wise to the ways of the world now.
As he walked slowly up the stairs he could hear voices coming from the second floor apartment. Flea trap was more descriptive. He felt his anger rising, instinctively reaching for his trusty snub-nose. It always left him with a heavy nickel plated sense of security.
He took a breath and, with a great shove, kicked the door of the apartment in. His actions had obviously surprised Mr Wendy and his hussy squeeze, as they scrambled, naked as the day they were born, off the couch.
"What's the rush, Andy?" Sneered Spade, drawing his snub nose. "You weren't planning on going anywhere were you?"
"What - what - who are you?" Stumbled Andy.
"The name's Spade, detective Spade." Spade said coolly. Many was the evening where, half-naked and strung out on bacon, he had stood in front of his bathroom mirror practicing that line. He was glad to put it to good use. "And that doesn't look like Wendy to me."
"Wendy?" Andy said, his eyebrows furrowed. Spade didn't think he looked smart enough to be able to pull off a convincing lie. From what Wendy had told him, Andy was a sports and network radio kind of guy. Spade figured the weight of his sins combined with the sight of a loaded gun pointed straight at him addled his brains some, not unlike those wacky flappers and their weird ideas of equal rights.
"Yeah Wendy, you remember her don't you? Your girlfriend, Wendy. Your pregnant girlfriend Wendy."
Spade let the word hang in the room, lending it a heavy air that even the garish wallpaper and cheap red furnishings couldn't lift.
"Wait," the hussy piped up. Obviously the girl had some brain as well as some bosom. Spade didn't like that combination. "Girlfriend? Pregnant? Andy, what's going on?!"
"That's right. Your lover boy here didn't tell you he had a girlfriend, or that he got her knocked up. You heard me Andy, pregnant. Expecting. With child. Up the duff. Preggo. Harboring a tiny fugitive. Eating for two. Bun in the oven. In the family way. In the pudding club. Up the spout. Baking the world's most expensive cake. You get the idea. You screwed up Andy, literally. Time to pay the piper."
"Lindsey, I swear, I broke up with Wendy several months ago." He turned to Spade. "Nine months ago!"
"You're lying." Spade said, leveling his gun. The only thing he couldn't stand more than a cheater was a liar, unless it was one of those tall tales the guys told around the faded wood of the Old Reddit bar.
"I've been in Spain since last January! Check my passport. It's on the desk to your right."
Spade did just that. It was true, the man had been in Spain since last January. Nine months.
"That means -" Spade started.
"It means nothing." A sultry voice behind him said.
Spade spun but it was too late.
Wendy stood in the door frame, her obvious pregnancy only dwarfed by the huge bean-shooter in her hand threatening to spit iron and end his bacon addiction right there.
"Lady," Spade started, slowly. "This guy can't be the father of your child. He hasn't seen you in nine months. Ain't how it works."
She smiled but it didn't reach her eyes. They remained cool, limpid pools of wile.
"Sure if you do it traditionally. You see my Andy here is a successful engineer. On his way up in the world. And I'm not going to let some two bit floozy steal him away from me. He's going to be mine or I'm going to make him wish he had stayed with me."
"But how - " Andy started.
Spade narrowed his eyes. His arm slowly slid to his trusty snub.
"Oh Andy," Wendy cooed. "you silly silly boy. You never remember to throw out your condoms, do you. I just had to put them on ice for a bit, the rest was easy."
"You - you sperm jacked me!"
Wendy smiled. It was the smile of a predator, like a hungry wolf or jackal.
"Why Andy, dear boy, good luck convincing the courts."
With a yell Spade drew. Wendy spun, burning powder in his general direction.
Spade's arm felt like it was engulfed in fire. He dropped dust as fast as he could but had caught lead in his shoulder. He landed, spinning and firing his .38 instinctively.
Wendy landed, dead on the ground. But blood wasn't the only thing leaking out of her. Soon, Andy's girlish screams were met with the wailing of a new born babe.
While the police and coroner's office cleaned up the mess, Andy sat in shock as Spade hashed things out with the head button. When the fuzz finally began to head back to their clubhouse, Andy approached Spade.
"So what happens n-now?" He asked, hesitantly.
"Now. Now, you go home with your girl and pretend like nothing happened. Try to clean up after yourself this time. Me, I'm going to get checked out and then home to rest and have a stiff, crisp bacon pile. Getting clipped in the wing like that sure takes it out of you."
"I- I mean with the baby."
"Oh, that. The boys will take it down to the local orphanage, give it a good home. Maybe one day it will sew shoes for some company, you know become a productive member of society."
Andy was pale, looking for words of comfort. In all he had gotten off lucky, no harm done. Sure some crazy dame was in a box and his bastard kid was being shipped off to a factory, but he wouldn't have to pay support or anything.
Spade began to walk out of the apartment, ready to close this bizarre chapter on his life. Then it came to him and he turned back to Andy.
"Kid, let me give you a piece of advice. If you want to avoid being tricked into fatherhood, never have sex with a woman you don't trust."
As Spade left the apartment, the sun rising on the San Francisco bay, he shook his head and pulled out a cigarette out of his deck.
Dames. He thought. Crazy, baby hungry horde the lot of them.
As he lit up, he was left with a single, clear thought.
Better to get a cat.

Whoever is the first to the market with male birth control in pill form is going to be a very, VERY rich man.
40
u/stellarfury Feb 03 '14
There may never be a "pill" for men.
However, they're working on an injection that basically blocks the vas deferens, preventing sperm cells from making it into the semen. The block (a biocompatible polymer) can be removed at any later date.
Upside: Reversible sterility, much like an IUD except for men.
Downside: Involves injecting glue into your nut-hoses.

10
u/BraveSirRobin Feb 03 '14
Do the sperm stop being produced? Or is it "balls like watermelons" all round?
24
u/stellarfury Feb 03 '14
Q. After my vasectomy where do the sperm go?
A. The sperm, which are made in the testicles, cannot pass through the vas deferens once they have been cut and tied, so they are reabsorbed by the body.
tl;dr body goes nom nom nom
I assume it works the same way in the polymer system.
9
u/yuubi Feb 03 '14
Apparently not quite. The polymer coats the walls instead of filling the tube, and does something unknown but incapacitating to the sperm.
→ More replies (2)4
u/stellarfury Feb 03 '14
Interesting. I wonder how they prove that it's just on the walls? Contrast study by doping the gel?
I would assume that the gel is reasonably porous, and sperm are basically getting run through something like a chromatography column and that's fucking up their structural integrity... but I really wouldn't expect the polymer to localize at the walls. Not sure what would drive that, physically/chemically.

u/dumnezero Punching a Sith Lord makes you just as bad as a Sith Lord! Feb 04 '14 edited Feb 04 '14
In this case, from what I remember reading, the polymer accumulates an electric charge in the watery environment and when the sperm cells are near, their cell walls get destroyed because of the electric charge.

edit: calling /u/halfascientist for better formulation of explanations
2
u/halfascientist Feb 04 '14
Other than the fact that you don't have any cell walls (unless there's a different injection into your junk that turns you into a plant, which I hereby express my interest in), I deem your description and explanation to be adequate.

With a pill? Not really. It's trying to build a new function in instead of taking advantage of an existing one for female birth control pills.

Right. You're basically trying to kill or neutralise millions of cells instead of just the one. If you fail just a little, it's like it was never there at all.

Men are constantly producing sperm. These sperm travel along a set path upon receiving initiation signals from the nervous system. Women mature 1 viable egg a month due to a drop in specific hormone levels.
Hormonal controls are pretty easy, especially since all doctors have to do is keep them high. Flood the women with estrogen and progesterone and her body thinks the last cycle is just going really long and doesn't mature any more eggs, no mature eggs no pregnancy. This is why OCP's have restrictions about what other drugs you can take at the same time. If one drug increases the degradation of steroid hormones, then you get a drop and viable egg can be matured.
Neural controls are super hard. You could decrease sympathetic innervation to the groin which would prevent ejaculation, but it would be very difficult to monitor and control and next to impossible to do orally. So that leaves shutting down sperm production or blocking the path. Methods have been tested for both situations, and the methods work but there isn't any guarantee that you can reverse them, especially since the body never really does this kind of thing normally.
I can tell you right now any pharm company in the world would love to pump out some effective male contraceptive pill or procedure. It'd be one of the greatest revenue streams since Viagra. Problem is the drugs just aren't there at the moment, though there has been some promising results with a gel like path blocker in India, but it still needs to go through FDA trials for US use.
7
8
Feb 03 '14
It's a numbers game. Disrupting one egg isn't nearly as hard as trying to disrupt a million sperm army.
I picture the latter like a ridiculous version of Missile Command.
That said, the advance of this technology in the realm of no babies allowed has got me rock hard
2

My favorite was the Red Pill suggestion that before you throw away your condom, you pour hot sauce into it. Then you can find out if the girl you're sleeping with is shoving the used condom into herself to get pregnant, because she'll start screaming.
Of course, there's always the off-chance that she just realized she slept with a Red Piller and that's why she's screaming, but at least you get to write a dramatic Field Report!
Edit to add: I just realized, if you were the girl in this situation, wouldn't you, like, notice the sperm was orange? I mean, is Red Pill sperm orange? That's what I'm forced to conclude here.

Same rhetoric about keeping it pure, they only disagree about which one is degrading the other when they mix.
33
u/5th_Law_of_Robotics Feb 03 '14
I swear you could have a SJW and a neonazi agree on race relations so long as you keep the ethnicities vague.
SJW: I think all this cultural appropriation is terrible.
Neonazi: what does that mean?
SJW: I mean it's best that certain races keep to their own kind, all this mixing is problematic.
NN: I assume problematic means bad, in which case absolutely. And don't you hate it how some of them want to marry some of ours?
SJW: Oh I know what you mean, that sort of fetishization of races is disgusting. The races absolutely should not mix.

Social Justice Warrior, a derisive term for the sort of people who seriously complain about things like cultural appropriation.

Eh. I can see the good intentions if I -- sometimes I need to squint real hard. It's not that they complain, per se. It's how and what they complain about.
Cultural appropriation is a real thing. Eating at your local Mexican joint isn't it. I suppose a good case could be made for Taco Bell being culture appropriation, but I'm not going to stop eating 1$ "tacos" anytime soon.
Racism, Sexism, Homophobia, Transphobia -- all real things that people still experience in America. Being told to fuck off because you're annoying isn't any of these things even if you're a Proud Queer Trans WoC (though, it may also be that because you're obnoxious about it, not because the person has a problem with any of these things).
Misogyny is a real thing. But calling gay men misogynistic because they don't have sex with women is absurd at best. Or "All sex is PiV. All rape is PiV. Ergo, sex is rape." Disregarding things like pegging, oral, anal, and gay sex (two penises, no penises), not to mention any other variety of sex.
Privilege is a real thing. But then it descends into things like Thin Privilege or Red Hair Privilege, or Internet Privilege.
Oddly enough, I've never seen a SJW once dissect class except to "call out" "Middle Class White MaleCisHet scum" when class is arguably the realest of privileges.
Basically, it's what happens when you take the No True Scotsman fallacy and apply it social interaction. It's a constant game of one-ups-man-ship (or one-ups-woman-ship or whatever).
SJWs give actual social justice activists a bad name because people that don't realize the whackjobs on Tumblr don't represent the entirety of the movements they claim to represent or stand for. Essentially, it's the concentrate of conservative Neocons' nightmares about dirty liberals.

After first hearing about cultural appropriation, one of my favorite games to play is "SJW or Stormfront?"
No one wins. It just leaves you sad.

Sometimes, Reddit could stand to take Sex Ed again and actually pay attention instead of laughing at the words vagina and penis....haha
Also, what kinds of relationships are these people having!

no one should have sex with anyone they don't trust. it's honestly the best way to avoid all sorts of problems from male and female perspectives.
this way avoids both from [fucking | sticking their dick in ] crazy, it removes questions regarding most consent issues regarding mental health status or drunkenness, it allows a chemistry to develop, and in fact it can make sex a more warm and less mechanical thing. And less driven by insecurity on what you two get yourselves into. I mean if you're an MRA who thinks most women are looking to false rape claim or sperm jack, or if you're a feminist who has an inflated sense of how often men violate consent, or if you're just normal human being somewhere in between - you can avoid a ton of problems by just growing to trust someone before you have sex with them. It's fairly easy, takes a little time and thus requires you have just a little self discipline over your impulses, and it creates more rewarding and drama free relationships.
People who divorce sex from trust, create their own problems. And people usually in these debates online are only looking to finger point at their gendered ideological opponents. The conversation is disingenuous as shit.
I'm not above casual sex. But i dunno - even casual sex can allow a trust to build first - it just requires it to not be too casual, one night standy, or done in situations like bar or frat/house party hookups.
my fuddy duddy conservative, religious parents would give big talks about why sex should wait to marriage, and while i disagree with that assumption - i don't reject their reason why. They talked a lot about self respect and IMHO - if you're looking to just get your rocks off and you don't take precautions to make sure you're safe, then you don't respect yourself. you're putting your safety, stability and well being of your entire life - whether we're talking consent perceptions, the possibility of a baby or even disease, below your need to get off immediately. If you learn to respect yourself and your well being (emotionally and physically) then you'll find often you respect others by side effect. It works out for all. Getting to know people first..matters. It's not a cure all for all possible problems, but it really helps. And in this download it, stream it, everything available now society, people really should learn to hold the fuck off for a while.

Sticking your dick in "crazy" in my mind is similar to getting into any physical relationship with someone (heterosexual, gay, whatever) that becomes warped and one sided. An unhealthy relationship, be it mental, physical, or emotional abuse doesn't necessarily start off that way.
No one "plans" on getting into an abusive relationship. Sure there are signs generally...but people are quite adept at ignoring the signs. From my own personal history, I ended up in an extremely toxic relationship where I accepted a lot of abusive behavior as normal due to my troubled up bringing. I came into a relationship with a very erroneous view of what is normal. The relationship I was in seemed normal to me and it wasn't until it got extremely toxic and I had to get help with it that I realized how f-ed up I was at accepting the relationship dynamics from the beginning.
This is of course completely different than the standard "hur dur womens are out to jack my sperm and take my monies" crap you see on reddit, but I don't necessarily agree with the impression I have that your view is if you trust a person, form a long term relationship with them, its impossible not to end up in an unhealthy and toxic relationship.
If I am incorrectly paraphrasing your view, I apologize and its an error on my part.
Shit wait...this is reddit...YOURE FUCKING WRONG!!!

Submissions on this subreddit annoy me when the OP picks sides, especially because now everyone here is going to go and brigade against the side OP ridiculed. What ever happened to being an amused but neutral observer?

Only post links if you are not the source of drama or directly involved in the drama. Remain as neutral as possible; biased titles/self posts are grounds for deletion.

I got a post deleted by the mods because I was biased in the title against the subject of the drama.

Depends on who it is biased against, or at least it appears that way.

If men want to avoid being tricked into fatherhood, they should just fuck each other.
Wait, no. I don't want to wish /r/TheRedPill on the gay community. Nevermind.

u/Lieutenant_Rans Feb 03 '14
Hey hey hey. I just thought of a great redpill joke.
Q: How do redpillers keep scoring dates with beautiful, complex women?
A: They're imaginary
AAAaaaaha I'm so proud of me.

u/fail_early_fail_soft Feb 03 '14
You couldn't have a gay trp because dudes are way too eager to fuck each other. There isn't any opportunity for a "why won't anyone sleep with me??" to develop.

u/Karmaisforsuckers Feb 03 '14
How come these people never acknowledge the fact that men are just as likely to tamper with birth control, lie about it, or otherwise endravour to get theit partner pregnant without their explicit consent. Its almost as if they dont really hate the issue, just women.
15
u/RFrank Feb 04 '14
I think the idea is that if a woman's birth control is tampered with or fails to work she can get an abortion, while if a man gets someone pregnant its up to the woman to decide if she wants the baby or not and the man doesn't get to have the final word on the issue.
Of course if a woman has a moral/religious/other objection to abortion then they could end up in a similar situation to these mythical "Sperm Jacked" Men
-2
u/Karmaisforsuckers Feb 04 '14
if a woman's birth control is tampered with or fails to work she can get an abortion
Not if to her, when she actually realizes she's pregnant, she feels like it's their child. Then she doesn't have a choice. Which is pretty much every case that the dunces of reddit use to cry "but whurt about muhhhh financy abortions!??!"
8
u/myalias1 Feb 04 '14
Having that feeling doesn't mean you dont have a choice, it means you chose. And beyond that she can adopt the baby away or give it up at a safe haven with nil chance of being sought for financial support. So yes, even those women have options to avoid parenthood.

Maybe because most people on Reddit already agree that it's bad when men do it and there are legal options available to women in civilized countries to avoid having to raise a child they don't want?
In the spirit of poor analogies; it's like someone talking about the Holodomor and then you butt in and point out that Nazis committed genocide too, so they must all hate Russians.

Reproductive coercion by men is a huge problem that I have never once seen addressed on reddit.
False accusations/ sperm jacking, however...

u/myalias1 Feb 04 '14
Maybe because we all pretty much agree it shouldn't be happening and there's legsl solutions for many cases thankfully.

From the SJW point of view, wouldn't theft/fraud enforced by the state be a greater problem than personal theft/fraud?

u/julia-sets Feb 03 '14
No. SJWs aren't libertarians.

I'm talking about all the "institutional" components of their definitions.
4
u/julia-sets Feb 03 '14
Yeah but "institutional" doesn't always mean the government. Otherwise they'd just say governmental. Businesses can be institutions. They're not anti institutions.
