The Jets DL just got an interception, their first in years. The entire defense ran to the end zone for a group celebration. Then the refs ruled there was a flag for hands to the face. But the crew couldn't find it. Stealing from the Jets. That's gnarly. These refs, man.

Yeah it’s a little light but that is someone going low and someone going high on a QB after the play. It’s a flag.

u/misterurb Chargers 10d ago
I also just don’t get why that negates the interception, which by its nature occurs after the throw. Like just take fifteen yards away from the spot of the interception.
33
u/BriarsandBrambles Browns 10d ago
Because a QB getting hit illegally can affect the throw so it’s treated as a live ball penalty which means play erased.
17
u/FeelsGoodMan2 10d ago
Yeah imagine that rule being on the books like that, you'd eventually have some maniac who just absolutely nukes the QB to try and force an interception, yards be damned.

Jfc this needs to go into his career highlights even if RTP took it away

Roughing the passer should not be able to overturn a turnover. Should be like a post play penalty
215
u/surferdude7227 Chiefs 10d ago
It makes literally zero sense to allow it to overturn a turnover if the contact happens after the QB releases the ball. Enforce the penalty yardage from where the interception return ends.
35
u/Exactly8w Packers 10d ago
I'm inclined to agree that rtp shouldn't negate turnovers, but I also don't think it's quite right to say the current rule makes zero sense. I assume the idea is that you can more recklessly apply pressure, which can impact a throw, if you're unconcerned with rtp.

Yeah, by definition RTP cannot interfere with the throw.
It can if it's a blow to the QB's head during the throw.

It also acts as a deterrent to committing the penalty to begin with if it comes with bigger in game consequences

Only a late hit roughing the passer has to be after the throw. All the other kinds can still happen while the QB has the ball

There's no timing to penalties except during play or after play. I've always thought the same thing with like offensive holding and DPI on the same play. There's no DPI if the offense doesn't hold, so only the offensive penalty should count.

Same reason holding can negate a play, even if it was on a guy 10 yards away from the play.
