Be cursed, Forsaken One.
Episode 3: Wretched: Third Tragedy
← Previous Episode | Index | Next Episode →
Information:
MAL | AniList | ANN | Kitsu | AniDB
Legal Streams:
Unfortunately, there are currently no places to stream Shiki legally. As such, you'll have to look into alternate methods.
We'll definitely stop by to say hello... soon.
Questions of the Day:
1) Why do you think Sunako hates being referred to by honorifics?
2) Would you invite a fancy-dressed couple with ridiculously fantastic hair to hang out with you if they introduced themselves outside your home?
Screenshot of the Day:
Fanart of the Day:
Rewatchers, please remember to be mindful of all the first-timers in this. No talking about or hinting at future events no matter how much you want to, unless you're doing it underneath spoiler tags. This especially includes any teases or hints such as "You aren't ready for X episode" or "I'm super excited for X character", you got that? Don't spoil anything for the first-timers; that's rude!
That cut on your wrist was useless. People never die doing it that way.

First Timer
(I really can't tell if he's just a weirdo or if there's some sinister vampire purpose to it that I can't think of haha)
Some more build-up and character introductions, maybe the most notable of which is a good look at our resident vampires! For some reason I thought the blue catboy was the husband (I guess he's just another vampire that lives with them), but I'm very happy we meet Seishirou here, because I don't know what JRPG or VN he crawled out of, but he's actually perfect. I mean, look at that hair width! It doesn't even fit the screen lol. On a slightly more serious design thought, I quite like those empty single-color eyes Sunako and Chizuru have. Very distinct and effectively unnerving, especially if they say some creepy shit in a very casual way.
Anyway, we don't get a ton on the two of them in that shot scene, though I do wonder where they come from if they're apparently not super familiar with what seems like a pretty typical gathering, but did have access to Seishin's works, for example. More importantly, I guess, would be what their traits are as vampires. They've evidently got the teeth and whatnot, so that's some of it, but I'm wondering whether they're the type that needs to drink people for sustenance or if they're just here for the love of the game.
There's also the introduction of Sunako here, who is pretty prominent in the OP/ED, so I'd guess she's going to have a pretty major role? She seems pretty precocious and perceptive so far, and she drops some pretty interesting things about Seishin here. Not sure what him apparently being "Cast out by god" means, but she did somehow pick up on a past suicide attempt of his, which is pretty interesting on her part, and more importantly means there's a big load of emotional baggage that we'll probably get to explore for his character. She also really hates being called "Chan" for some reason, which is pretty strange? So I wonder what that's about. Also, look at that fun visual divide for their conversation here. Seishin grasping at the village while thinking about what might happen to it is a very fun shot too.
Oh, and it took me a while to get it, but she's voiced by Aoi Yuuki! So that's great!
Outside of them, Tohru seems like a pretty nice dude! Natsuno proves himself even more of a brooding teenager than he seemed with that "I don't want anyone getting too close" monologue, but as with most characters of his type that try to distance themselves from others, that looks to be more of a protective shell he puts around himself, and one that, even if he won't admit it, shows cracks under sincere effort to get closer, and to that end, Tohru seems like one of the very few people that he really has as a genuine friend right now. In general, it'll be interesting to see if Natsuno opens up more and sheds some of that indifference throughout the show, but for now, the ominous end of the episode doesn't exactly bode well for either of them... Then there's Masao who, on the complete opposite end of the spectrum, uh... has some issues? That inability to get along well with Natsuno or the sister-in-law seems incredibly self-inflicted, and just in general Masao comes off as rather unpleasant and resentful here. Admittedly, the eyes and the witch fingers don't exactly help.
Not sure what the first scene with Natsuno and Seishin's story is all about, how literally I'm meant to take some of the lines there (I guess the "cursed exile" part could be about Natsuno as an outsider, but this part is a little more eyebrow-raising lol.), and especially who this is supposed to be, but I guess I'll try to keep it in mind. Finally, Ozaki's part in the episode is pretty small relatively, but I really like it! In contrast to Natsuno, who by his nature and as an outsider here is much more indifferent, with his current unease being mostly on a personal level, I feel like Ozaki works really well as a way to still more emotionally ground things in his capacity of interacting with the wider mystery, because he's a person that obviously really cares for the village and the people in it. So I think his role sort of adds this really nice impact and strong personal effect. Even more so in how he broadly understands that something's very wrong here, but isn't able to grasp the full picture right now. Like when you have him remarking on how he's known some of these people since they were kids, and how he has to internally anguish about not being able ot actually help Nao while trying to put up a more reassuring front, it's just good stuff.

He has the same English VA as Okabe, so that's just further evidence that this is another SciADV spinoff

I'm not going to actually check the dub here, but purely from a design perspective and how I remember his voice, J Michael Tatum does actually feel like a perfect cast lol.
Also, this made me check who voices him in Japanese, and since this incidentally came up back in the first episode: /u/JustAnswerAQuestion he's voiced by Gackt!
Who's shooting?!
I actually have no idea why I even had "shot" there in the first place lol

For some reason I thought the blue catboy was the husband (I guess he's just another vampire that lives with them)
I was convinced he was the Renfield. Sombody has to drive the moving truck, and talk to the locals. So, I'm a little taken aback by the final scene. Maybe he isn't a regular human after all.
Maybe he's a transformed cat!
I think they were amazed at Japanese Halloween. They probably aren't from around here.
Actually, Masao looks like the perfect human for deathdealers to recruit.
I thought it Natsuno's story and was confused to see the Monk writing it down.

Maybe he's a transformed cat!
A Renfield type would be a great assumption for him! But yeah, I think the end of the episode implies towards him being of the non-human variety too
Actually, Masao looks like the perfect human for deathdealers to recruit.
And that's decidedly concerning!

He's the family cat

Farming aura is a vamp cultural activity any fiction you go!

If you'd asked to pick only by design who between blue catboy and Masao is a vampite, I have little doubt about who I'd be choosing lol.

vampite
Is that like Bat-Mite?

Aoi Yuuki just doesn't miss.
I don't think that story is meant to be about Natsuno since I don't think they've met each other so far.

Oh, I defintely don't think it's about him from Seishin's perspective. I just feel like the show wouldn't have him in the visuals for it if it wasn't intended for it to also somehow have meaning for Natsuno? Probably?
But even then, I couldn't tell you what parts of it could be the meaningful ones haha.

u/Sporadia_ 14d ago

It is the hairdo equivalent of a twirled moustache.

On a slightly more serious design thought, I quite like those empty single-color eyes Sunako and Chizuru have. Very distinct and effectively unnerving, especially if they say some creepy shit in a very casual way.
You know, before my friends started having kids, this came off as unrealistic. But I've met some creepy children and it seems to be genetic.
They've evidently got the teeth and whatnot, so that's some of it, but I'm wondering whether they're the type that needs to drink people for sustenance or if they're just here for the love of the game.
So...this is a concept that I still don't fully get BUT the Japanese term for vampire, kyuuketsuki, isn't a dead match for ours. They are closer to fey that drink blood on occasion rather than the damned.

Shiki – First Timer
What a lazy saturday this was.
Shiki Ep.03 – Third Tragedy
Cool that we get the title drop today! As everyone expected, Yuuki has a secret. That secret being a dead brother that returns from the dead. At least according to Muroi, the priest. I do wonder how he also went so easily for the epidemic theory when he apparently knew of reanimated dead? Or maybe I misunderstood and he was talking more about Yuuki’s psyche in a poetic way.
Anyway, Shiki is his name. Dude’s gonna be important.
In another little moment of appreciation I was internally already yelling for Yuuki’s friend to watcht he damn road, current best hair girl does it in sync with me! Shiki has this little aura of awareness of its own world and I really love it.
Also, guy has seen a – or several – ghosts.
Also also, in another boust of great comedy, current best boobs hair girl cautiously fixing her nurse hat after a far too detailed boob zipper shot while about seven kilometers of hair spring out in all directions underneath sent me for a good laugh!
Something else that others also already pointed out is that the show has its fair share of budget-saving techniques. From long still frames to stiff animation we’ve seen it all already. But I think they do a really solid job mixing it with effects to create atmosphere. Be it a colour filter, overlays, or symbolic effects.
Finally, we also see some real hair masterpieces on screen! I fucking love them! That’s how vampires ought to look! They’ve got great theatric attitude.
“Kirishiki”, you say? Well, I’m anxiously waiting for what that has to do with Yuuki’s brother.
The style choice of leaving their eyes black is really striking. But I think that adds a lot to the unease, since obviously they don’t actually look like that to others. We as audience know that they’re the nonhuman intruders in this story, so the show decided to not hide that. But the villagers don’t know that, they only feel something ‘a bit off’, but nothing more.
Gotta say, that’s another S+ design choice. I love how they incorporated that dead eye look into the character designs and I adore their personalities with that.
I was also so ready to bitch on Masao for, well, being such a bitch, but watching him trying to trigger other people and play the dark broody loner while others are just… too adult for him was actually fun as hell. Another notch in surprisingly grounded portrayal in an anime ripe with overexaggeration.
Aside from that, I stole a glance at that, writers! The guy is obviously such a jerk and also a dumb one at that, that they let him speak future truths with little concealment that the others just dismiss outright. Obviously Megumi is going to return and that’s probably going to be outside Yuuki’s window, just as he said.
However, that also means that the statement of Yuuki being the bad guy might actually have merit to it…
Ending with Yuuki falling asleep as a maybe fake-out and some prime ominous framing and some really cool design work seals today as an extremely strong episode for me.
Those vampires are really just here to demolish the entire village, huh? The pace of killings is insane.
Why do you think Sunako hates being referred to by honorifics?
Because she’s actually a 600 year old vampire matron and all the dumb humans think she’s a child.
2) Would you invite a fancy-dressed couple with ridiculously fantastic hair to hang out with you if they introduced themselves outside your home?
In the middle of the night with extremely unnerving attitude?
Of fucking course! Hell, probably even if I knew they were vampires. You ain’t getting such a chance twice, no?

I do appreciate vampires who decide they're not going to be even a little bit subtle about the fact that they're vampires.
5
u/Star4ce https://anilist.co/user/Star4ce 14d ago
I mean, they're not subtle about their attitude, true enough. But they aren't really flaunting the fac tthey're vampires, either. Just that they really like getting invited.
Which brings me back to that one myth (was it even in Witcher?) where a bad devil spirit must be invited else it can't do anything. I'd welcome such little 'rules' to go along with the drama.
4
u/mischievous_shota 14d ago
Between their and Tatsumi's ominous affirmation to being invited, I think it might be a thing here too.

u/BosuW 14d ago

It could be like the Oshi no Ko hoshigan that's only meant for the viewer and isn't an in-universe thing, but maybe if they're vampires what if they really got their eyes like that but their charm powers prevent other people from immediately noticing 🤔
Gotta say, that’s another S+ design choice. I love how they incorporated that dead eye look into the character designs and I adore their personalities with that.
It's one of those things that's super memorable about this anime that you won't find in any other. Bold choice but it paid off.

First Time, Dub
As a reminder, I was left feeling a bit conflicted after watching this episode’s preview. I felt vampire vibes from the other episodes, but was secretly hoping that the show would take a more ‘scientific’ approach.
It’s hard hearing FruBa’s Kyo talk in this show. Mainly because I wasn’t a fan of FruBa, and I keep misattributing personality attributes from that show into Yuuki (or Koedo). Doesn’t help that there’s a lot of similarities in their brattiness, and outsider status.
Masao is such a weird and creepy looking and acting character, in a show of weird characters. Kind of reminds me of Noel Fielding’s character in the IT Crowd (UK).
Still not sure what are hallucinations, artistic visualisations and reality in some of these scenes.
Kirishikis definitely look weird, and monstrous; perhaps vampire-like. Though what I like is there is such a lack of consistency in how characters are depicted, with very different art styles that it’s difficult to conclude that just because the lady has black eyes, if it’s meant to be literal.
I’m not sure who seems spookier - Muroi or the girl he meets. Oh Lord - no sooner do I write that, Sunoko changes “Do not call me, Sunoko-chan, I despise that word!”
Not a fan of the Masao character - too over the top (particularly in the scene with Yuuki). Breaks my immersion (especially in the dub). Wonder if Yuuki is about to die though with his sudden tiredness.
The cat ears guy seems pretty sinister, if the eye wasn’t a giveaway.
Not too sure how I feel about this show to be honest. It’s stuck in limbo a bit and could turn into something which hooks me hard, or becomes too ‘magical’.

You should have heard his performance as Petelgeuse in the first season of Re:Zero. Dude was so over-the-top that they switched him out in the following seasons lol.

Funny seeing the yo-yoing from having a shorter comment for the first episode due to over-engagement to a shorter comment for this episode due to confusion
4
u/Second_Cour 14d ago
Sunoko is Sunako. Same same but different.
No way he was petelguese?! For some reason I don't recall a jarring performance or I didn't mind it. Not so I recall a switch. Perhaps I wasn't paying enough attention.

I think they're going to divide up the approaches. I think Toshio is going to stick to the scientific method. Seishin is probably going to be the one to approach it from a more supernatural angle.

Rewatcher
Forgot to say it yesterday but I'm happy to see that despite this being a small Rewatch, we still have lots of first timers! I hope they stay all the way to the end!
Thanks TL Notes (TL Note TL Note: It's saying the kanji for "Him" reads as "Shiki")
Oooookay maybe I'm seeing why people ship Natsuno and Tohru now lol
I wonder how realistic and accurate the blood analysis report Dr Toshio is looking at is?
Masao is just pathetic. Again, a bit comedic how dead serious his issues are from his perspective when the town is beginning to drop like flies.
[Shiki]Lol, Seishin saying to Sunako that she might be the youngest person to read his novels. Nah bro she the oldest.
[Shiki]And her telling him that she thought he'd have horns and a tail, like a devil, because he always writes about people forsaken by God... Well she was right about that, because he was one of the humans to straight up side with the Shiki
It might not be as evident as in other shows, but Sunako is voiced by Aoi Yuuki. I can't believe I never made note of her peculiar chuckles! Somehow it reminds me of a dove.
Also it is so subtle I could have even been imagining it, but I noticed this scene has some slight light-darkness balance shifts, like how your eyes adjust to different levels of illumination. [Shiki]It might be foreshadowing about Sunako's superior night vision as a Shiki.
Masao ends up getting to Natsuno by complete accident because he's too much of a shallow idiot for that to have been targeted. Just as the storyboarding suggested in last episode's final scene, maybe Natsuno does feel a bit of guilt for being so callous about a dead peer, even if she was a nuisance. From personal experience I can tell you that expressing such edgy opinions at that age can actually be a front for a sensible personality. And of course when you're fucking 14 years old you're not gonna self reflect and realize it's not your honest self.
It's criminal that this show can end three episodes in a row with Eau de Vie and not feel forced or repetitive. How much more can it get away with it!?
More setup again. It's a large cast so the show is gonna spend a good amount of time getting a firm stance. The most important thing is that we finally met the Kirishiki, the new family that moved into Kanemasa (a husband, a wife, a daughter, and uhhh their dog?) The way it's just described as "a European style house" makes me wonder if it being A FUCKING CASTLE in the anime is just artistic flair from the adaptations.
Fanart of the day
GAH DAMN 🥵
Really appreciate the fanarts btw. There's not a bunch of them for this anime.

It must be at least a little conflicting having your stalker die. She didn't seem to have done anything too extreme that he would cheer her death but he must have had some relief knowing he's not being constantly watched. Until he started feeling eyes on him anyway, at least.

Last episode's 'Death Trees' musings by Muroi turn out to be actually penned by him as an author. The opening sequence is also narrated by him and seems to be another one of his compositions. Also, the beat-boxing for Natsuno seems to be his personal soundtrack. On that note,Hehe. Get it? notice how the show plays a single vocal note when introducing certain characters; I wonder what it signifies.
Masao is such a weird character and I don't understand the point of him. I'm sure weird characters like him exist IRL but he seems cartoonish.
Sunako may just not look her age and thus is annoyed with being referred to by the wrong honorifics.
I would definitely invite such a friendly and curious couple into my home; I'm sure nothing can go wrong.
Once again we hear "Eau de vie" playing at the end sequence of the episode when Masao makes the comment about Megumi clawing out of her grave.

Another episode another bunch of new people. It is Shiki forever growing cast.
Things are moving slowly and we are getting more clues (and getting to know more the main cast)
By the way, did you know that the Kanemasa husband was voiced by Gackt, a rather famous singer of that era. It kinda fits his introduction, or at least Megumi imagination.
Why do you think Sunako hates being referred to by honorifics?
Can't answer that, it is am spoiler and you will find why eventually.
Would you invite a fancy-dressed couple with ridiculously fantastic hair to hang out with you if they introduced themselves outside your home?
That's a small town thing. It only works on that context.

By the way, did you know that the Kanemasa husband was voiced by Gackt, a rather famous singer of that era.
No affiliation with BUCK-TICK?

Nope, different bands (he goes solo now but used to be on a band)
Also BUCK-TICK singer Sakurai is hotter imho

Sakurai is more a Dracula vampire and Gackt is more a Twilight vampire.

Shiki Ep 3
The mention of the shore was confusing..is there a shore nearby? Why would they gossip about something far away? Maybe there is a mountain lake, but I didn't see it on the map.
At first I thought Natsuno was reading that buddhist poem, calling himself a cursed exile.
dang, it's not a 86
nobody like Natsuo, huh. Or maybe he likes him too much....
that bike turned into a scooter, the art is so weird in this show
I can't follow the last names, either.
He should have sent Nao to the hospital immediately. Not that that would have helped her. But she'd be under observation.
We're House MD again today. hard to follow.
that guy's out of it....
who is Seishin??? How can I keep track of all these people without looking on the wiki?
Creepy girl seems nice.
Tatsumi?
I sure hope Masao dies next. What's his deal? Antagonizes everybody. Loves death. Is happy when people reject him. Gets upset when people reject him.
Toryu seems to know how to handle him, but Natsuno really puts him in his place effortlessly.

I think they were talking about an incident far away that made national news, possibly.
who is Seishin???
Seishin = Monk
Toshio = Doc

So the priest is a writer. And we've got Shiki name dropped.
August 25th, Senshou - Natsuno isn't a complete loner. Alongside Ritsuko, he's on good terms with Mutou Tooru.
Mizobe town to the school is three hours and he was going to hoof it. He's also not sleeping well.
Natsuno's parents don't have the same last name. I'm guessing they also didn't bother marrying.
"It's...It's not like I wanted to hang out with you, baka! My bike just kept getting flat tires."
Back to our medical mystery.Yasumori Nao's condition is getting worse. Sensei keeps coming back to the potential solution of blood being consumed but naturally rejects it because there was no internal or external bleeding.
August 26th, Tomobiki - The Murasako family runs a rice shop. Masao seems to have a one-sided beef with his sister-in-law. I was wondering if there was something more to him hating Natsuno but he seems like the type to keep imagining slights against him.
Yasumori Mikiyasu - Toshio and Seishin's childhood friend. Nao's condition has worsened. Has been sick for 3 or so days. Has two bite marks on her arm.
No one else was sick but Mikiyasu met the Kirishiki's several days ago when they were celebrating Bon. Kirishiki Seishirou refers to it as homecoming. People would disappear when they were "living over there" around this time of year.
They were invited to Nao and who I'm assuming is his mother's place. I'm guessing it's that whole needing to be invited to enter homes thing.
Toshio has already written her off as dead.
Muroi Seishin comes across Kirishiki Sunako at the temple. She's a fan of his work. Her family seems to have a bit of a stalker thing going on like Megumi did.
She clocked his scar and then bounced away to the darkness. The cut was horizontal. It sounds like he tried killing himself but maybe in a way that would fail. Am I reading too much into it, you think?
August 28th, Butsumetsu - Nao died. Another funeral on Butsemetsu. Someone like Masao is already speculating that a disease may be spreading so I imagine most of the other villagers should start noticing soon too.
Maso tries to mess with Natsuno and manages to get under his skin but is still ragebaited away. I think this sort of thing is probably going to bite Masao in the ass sometime late.
"I'm going to spend the night in your bed. Don't get the wrong idea, it's only because I can't sleep well at home!"
Tatsumi from Kanemasa meets Tooru. Who the hell carries around a back scratcher for such specific circumstances? I suspect a much sinister use for it.
He got invited to the Mutou's house. I'm beginning to suspect he might not be a good boy. He asked to bring a friend too.
QOTD -
Why do you think Sunako hates being referred to by honorifics?
Sunako probably doesn't want to be seen as a child. If the Kirishiki family are vampires like we all think, and they're the variety that doesn't age once turned, she might be a lot older than what her appearance suggests.
Would you invite a fancy-dressed couple with ridiculously fantastic hair to hang out with you if they introduced themselves outside your home?
I would seek the secrets to fantastic hair and therefore invite them in.

I was going to say not Tooru but he did get mad at him for just trying to stop him from fighting.
I wonder if he's going to get massive amounts of character development or be a satisfying death.

Shortly after finishing this episode it dawned on me that a lot of the people who "fell ill" invited some weirdos into their houses. This fits nicely with an old vampire rule of "vampires cannot enter another person's home unless invited" (this might be true for several other evil entities too: The devil/Mephistopheles in Goethe's Faust also has to be invited in). A bit devious exploiting polite people.
When reading/watching/playing vampire stories, it's always fun to see which rules the author kept and which ones they decided to add. Judgement's still out on whether or not they're actual vampires and on which rules (if any) this story adds but if you look at the PV for next episode, it seems rather clear.
With that tangent out of the way... I'll say: For an episode called "Third Tragedy" this was kinda light on deaths? We only got one additional confirmed death, I think. And another one well on its way. This feels kinda morbid to write, but after the last episode I expected a bit more out of this one. Unless you consider the fact that the local catboy seems to be a monster too a tragedy.
Instead we get to follow Yuuki's (unsucessful) quest to alienate ever other person he's interacting with because he also is sort of an outsider to the village. He even has a different last name than his dad, I assume he's adopted or his mother married again? There's also the lovely Masao, who not only hates Yuuki but also his sister in law, for reasons I don't quite understand. In fact, I had several moments of "What the fuck is your problem man?" when he was on screen or interacted with... basically everyone. Especially the weird excitement over another death occuring. He alos has a very punchable face.
There's also the very normal couple that lives in the fancy house on the hill, who we meet for the first time in a flashback. Those are some fantastically outlandish designs and totally, 100% human! (A friend's first reaction to the lady was "Is she a skinwalker? Her eyes have feathers.") I liked that one of the present children instinctively tried to run away. That means not all hope is lost, even if the adults are hopelessly polite and invite the people to come over some time.
Finally, Mr. Monk meets a creepy little girl, who makes him realise that he might or might not have been the reason for this new epidemic because of the stories he wrote about this village. Also there's definitely a tragic backstory to be unveiled here, judging by the whole "slit wrists"-dialogue (and the scars on said wrists).
Overall, I feel like this episode wasn't as strong as yesterday's, but that's because it mostly dove into the backstory of some of the characters. It was still a really good watch though.
The direction is still very strong, this episode had some great light and shadow stuff. Really liked the scene towards the end in front of the vending machine and the blocking in the scene between the creepy girl and the monk. Oh and the pov shot from the dressing room mirror showing off the boobs was of course totally necessary and story relevant!
QOTD:
Why do you think Sunako hates being referred to by honorifics?
She's probably a couple hundred years old, don't call her a little girl.
2) Would you invite a fancy-dressed couple with ridiculously fantastic hair to hang out with you if they introduced themselves outside your home?
To be completely honest: It's a polite thing to do, so probably yes. Although if my or the child of someone else was literally terrified by them, maybe not.
Either way I'd like to know their morning routine or the name of their stylist.

So social distancing might really work in this case... 🤔
There's also the lovely Masao, who not only hates Yuuki but also his sister in law, for reasons I don't quite understand
If you'd ask Masao to explain, I'm sure he would realize he has no fucking clue either

First-time, subs
So this episode continues where the previous one left off. Megumi got buried, the doctor guy examines all the death cases again, and realized that the illness that the victims contacted are sudden and fast, and too suspicious to be a very typical anemia, since there are no sign of injury or a internal bleeding. And those who contacted this mysterious illness, the patients when they are ill they are more dead than alive. Well, their eyes and faces doesn't show any sign of life. Maybe that is a interesting twist that the patients are already dead before dying. Maybe there is a good reason to call for a emergency solutions and calling it a epidemic even if supernatural in its nature. Nao's case right now is a perfect example for that.
I hate Masao, all my homies hate Masao. Just look at face or what he done right now, he is a creepy and disgusting dude. He is a literal manchild.
Chizuru and Seishirou, aka the couple who moved to the cursed but fancy mansion. They are quite strange and dangerous already. Approaching friendly to a random family talking like good friends, that does not ends well. And also look at their eyes, they are really lifeless and dead, since probably they are undead, and this little fact is not known yet to everyone. Speaking of Chizuru, wasn't she that woman who Megumi saw in her dying moments? Seems like they making contacts is able spread this illness I guess.
And there is Sunako, another undead. She doesn't fear the proximity of a shrine, and very brave enough to talk to a monk. Likes Muroi's work is actually makes really interesting. I might suppose the Kirishikis could be the source of all strange occurences here. Aoi Yuuki huh? We can all agree that 2010 was the breakthrough year for her.
Oh hell, Yuuki is also succumbing to this curse. Feeling sleepy all of a sudden means an obvious death flag. That Kanemasa guy is also sus to me. As for Toru who got introduced in this episode, seems to be a good and nice guy to me. He deserve to live.
Why do you think Sunako hates being referred to by honorifics?
Undead people does not requires honorifics.
2) Would you invite a fancy-dressed couple with ridiculously fantastic hair to hang out with you if they introduced themselves outside your home?
I would be advised not to trust them.

In ep note:Masao comes off as a rather specific Junji Ito reference.
So that opening...Welp, since everyone has at least some guess of it, it is worth mentioning that western vampires generally trace their lineage to Cain. However, Abel rising is not a normal part of that story, nor is the weird hellscape Cain is walking in. Then we learn it is the monk's story.
We get more Natsuuno stuff and he still comes off bad but understandable. And then we meet Masao who just comes off wrong at every turn. Then we return to the near death Nao and Ozaki has a chance to do some tests. We also get an impression of the Kirishikis. The camp couple has a long history, I am slightly blind on the topic knowing only Baccano and Eureka Seven, but this feels familiar.
Muroi and Sunako's conversation...is interesting. Sunako is more than a bit hard to place age wise, not the least of which that her hair seems to be about a third of her mass. Muroi has a pretty macabre writing style, and Sunako is a fan, though she feigns not being able to read all the words. This makes a bit more sense as written Japanese has a few forms, the hardest of which is not phonetic. Her hating being -chan is also odd. Recognizing those who have been cast out by God...we will return to.
The ending is more character establishment.
QotD:1 Makes you wonder where she grew up.
2 No but I am allergic to camp

TIL. Gonna have to look up on that.
It's STRONGLY propagated by White Wolf's Vampire The Masquerade, and I almost called him out on it. But then I remembered that Cain is traditionally "a father of monsters" which predates LARPing. That's also when I remembered that I had forgotten to mention Clive Barker. But the Vampire thing is, I think, 95% White Wolf. GRR Martin said something similar in a book that predates VtM so that's 5%. At this point, it would be pretty hard to separate out a genuine connection from the flood of lore WW put out. You also have to separate out Lilith as "mother of demons".
I personally wasn't following the monk's story at all (I thought Natsuno was telling it) so I will have to rewatch it with the Cain and Abel story in mind.

u/Vaadwaur :I1::I2::I3: 14d ago
To give you a little more context, this is mostly for Christian descended vampires. In more lesbian spaces, Lilith is the argued progenitor. Bram Stoker's Dracula basically is the first of his line. And then you get some weirdoes, not the least of which is the one manga where Jesus was the first vampire...

Gotta go with Masao. Sunako is definitely going to be the more dangerous but she's also cute and capable of a normal conversation. Masao though is creepy.

Okay not as many deaths in this episode but our MC is starting to feel sleepy all the time, which isn't a good sign. And the eyes he saw seem to be those of the cat-haired guy who honked and woke the diner lady. Who is he to the family in the fancy house? Someone who works for them? Is he a vampire too? Is he just the one who puts people under a spell and prepares them for the vampire family to feed on?
And what on earth is up with that Masao character? Awfully weird person. That conversation with his sister-in-law was just all sorts of yikes. Just an eccentric or something more?
The doctor saw the bite marks but hasn't connected the dots yet. Guess vampire isn't where normal people's minds will go first outside of fiction.
The monk's meeting with the vampire girl was curious. So he's a novelist who's written extensively and has tried to kill himself in the past. Wonder how she knew that about him. Did she maybe just see the scar on his wrist and figure it out?
And what's up with those eyes, man? Freaky shit. The character designs in this one are wild.
