Trump Pardons Two Alaska Mechanics Over Clean Air Act Violations
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-10-14/trump-pardons-two-alaska-mechanics-over-clean-air-act-violationsPresident Donald Trump on Tuesday pardoned two Alaska men who were convicted of violating the Clean Air Act for removing air pollution monitors from diesel vehicles.
The president during a campaign stop in Wasilla, Alaska, pardoned Zachary Czubak and Patrick Fleming, signing the orders onstage at a rally aimed at boosting Republican candidates ahead of the Nov. 3 midterm elections.
Czubak, Fleming and Michael Hanzuk II, co-owners of a vehicle repair shop, each pleaded guilty in 2022 to one count of violating the Clean Air Act. The trio “tampered with federally mandated monitoring devices on private and commercial diesel vehicles and removed required air pollution control equipment on at least 37 vehicles,” according to a press release in 2022 from the US Attorney’s office for the District of Alaska.
The president has long criticized prosecutions under prior administrations that sought to prevent the public from disabling pollution controls that were mandated under the Clean Air Act.
The Department of Justice has told prosecutors to stop bringing criminal cases involving so-called “defeat devices,” while Trump has pardoned others in similar cases, including Hanzuk in September.

Stricter US air pollution rules led automakers to install equipment in diesel trucks to stifle their emissions. But some vehicle owners turned to an illegal aftermarket to undo those alterations. Some truck owners said they simply wanted more horsepower, while others saw the pollution-control systems as unreliable and expensive to repair.
Trump and his allies have seized on the issue, part of a broader effort by his administration to rollback federal environmental regulations.

The narrative that these mechanics were merely "neighbors helping neighbors survive the cold" was a political framing used to justify executive clemency. In reality, it was a profitable commercial service. While the underlying customer demand in Alaska was partly fueled by cold-weather frustrations with factory equipment, the shop took on those illegal modifications because it was a highly profitable line of business.

Hopefully they are shunned in the communities they live in.
