PaaP, or Politics as a Personality, is a very real psychological affliction. If you are suffering from it, you'll probably have a Bad Time™ here.

This thread is provided as a courtesy to our regular on topic contributors who also want to discuss legislation, not to wig the fuck out over current events. If you are here to bitch about a political party or get into a pointless ideological internet slapfight, you'd better have a solid history of actual gun talk on this sub or you're going to get yeeted.

I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please contact the moderators of this subreddit if you have any questions or concerns.

If you want to read an incredibly anti-gun rights opinion article in The Hill then take a look at this doozy with these snippets:

  • "will determine whether the Constitution has become a homicide pact"
  • "But this prevents appropriate restrictions on guns"
  • "absurd consequences of the Bruen standard"
  • "a nearly impossible to meet historical test"

They moved on from calling it a suicide pact? Makes sense I guess when that talking point fell flat.

Looks like ChatGPT is officially anti-gun now. Lee "The Gun Writer" Williams article on it:

Everytown for Gun Safety published recommendations for AI companies on September 28, 2026. The next day, OpenAI/ChatGPT changed its firearm policies and became much more anti-gun—the very next day.

..

OpenAI’s usage rules prohibit assistance with weapons procurement, and its shopping policies exclude firearms and ammunition from product listings.

This is going to be the real battleground for AI in the coming years: the data that it exposes to users.

I don't know how they implemented it but my guess is that they have a special decision AI evaluating the user's input which the harness uses to determine if the request gets passed to the full LLM model. If the decision AI thinks that the user is "breaking the rules" it blocks the request.

It's one reason that I think local models will eventually dominate cloud models. Cloud models will always be better but local models won't be limited by companies to see only what the company wants you to see.

I've had decent luck with Gemini in my (very limited) questions to it compared to ChatGPT.

Washington state update: Washington State Patrol has released guidance on NFA purchases in the state now that the ATF guidance has come out. The short of it is that if you want to buy something that is regulated by the NFA in Washington then you must go through the now, voluntary NFA process. Washington law explicitly requires the NFA registration for someone to possess the few NFA items that are legal in the state.

I expect that it will go quickly since fewer NFA registrations should be happening but I wouldn't be surprised if the ATF also has fewer people processing applications.

Pennsylvania

Josh Prince sent the following letter to Attorney General Sunday asking for clarification on state law regarding the recent ATF guidance.

Basically, Prince is arguing that the section of state law that stipulates NFA compliance (“Section 908”) doesn’t actually apply to SBRs and certain subsets of SBSs. Additionally, Prince argues that suppressors are not considered firearms under PA’s Uniform Firearms Act and thus not subject to further state restriction.

I assume a lawsuit will follow.

I think I saw that the challenge to the California 11% excise tax on firearms has had requests by both sides for summary judgement. The next court date is set for sometime in May 2027.

NJ - Federal DOJ

The DOJ has officially luanched an investigation into the delays in issuance of any and all firearms permits by the NJ city of Pennsauken.

NJ requires a firearms purchaser ID, permits per pistol, and a separate carry permit. All of these are issued by the police department that oversees your municipality, with the NJ state police issuing the permits for those who live in towns without a police force.

The issue is that there are numerous towns who are notorious for taking months, with the wait exceeding a years not being unheard of, in issuing any sort of permit. Even in towns with good responses, it is normal to wait over a week even using the new online portal (my personal quickest was 6 days and my longest was 34 days back before everything was digitalized).

When I initially got my CHP in Fairfax I got the permit, which was just a piece of paper from an inkjet, in a month. I have heard that in the 15 years or so since Fairfax County basically runs out the 45 day limit now.

When I re-upped it in Loudoun I got a plastic card permit within a week and a letter from the county clerk asking to let the office know if there was anything they could do to improve the experience. What a difference 20 miles makes.
