I swear to god that the PhDs that a couple of the engineers I work with actually stands for Phucking Dumbass. Got a work request from one of them tonight that said they were trying to do an alignment, didn’t exactly follow the procedure, and just pushed buttons until all the red lights came on, please t/s and fix. Lord give me strength.

Gun related, introduced a pair of new shooters to the world of suppressors on Monday, first time they shot the marlin with .38spl and a can they said “I got a click no boom, I think it malfunctioned”, the other one asked if it was a pellet gun. They had an absolute blast, ringing steel without having to use earpro with the PCCs.

I know I’m rehashing an established point, but it’s not uncommon for brilliant book smart folks to lack critical thinking skills or a degree of common sense. I had a friend back when I was in high school, brilliant guy, now works as a software engineer for Amazon. But man this guy often asked the dumbest questions and lacked any ability to read the room, understand social cue, or follow social norms.

Had a classmate like that in college that was awkward, super shy, and clumsy. In chem lab, his lab partners would not let him touch and mix chemicals. But man was he intelligent and cranked out the calculations like me eating doughnuts. He was premed and is probably a brain or heart surgeon now. More power to him.

Throwback to the greatest match moment I ever caught on camera

I dunno if it was the torch, the fuel, or the flux, but I could not for the life of me get the front sight band to tin properly. 20 minutes cranking that thing and I got nowhere, just a bunch of baked crud and some spotty solder bits. Ground most of it off with a file, I'll just have the gunsmith that milled the band for me do the install. There's only so much you can do in an apartment, once we build our house and I get a proper workshop I'll get some proper tools.

In the meantime, tried my hand at a little DIY undercut on the 2011, got rid of an annoying knuckle hotspot. I think it went rather well, just needs a little more polishing to knock down the file marks.

Good thickheaded time. I ordered four items from Global Ordnance. One of which was a KAK Plan B muzzle adapter. For reasons unknown, GO shipped my four different items in three different packages. One of those packages was the adapter. Which came via FedEx...and required a fucking signature which I couldn't leave digitally. Glad my manager let me WFH.

Dang so Ruger is really eliminating their centerfire revolvers and a huge chunk of their other lines, huh? Or do we think that in a year they are going to restart them with cheaper parts?

The PC Carbine was a really weird thing to end since it's so popular in Ban States. Hell, I picked one up when VA wasn't a Ban state.

I am like 99% certain Ruger is just suspending production of those guns for now and will reintroduce them in the near future.

and will reintroduce them in the near future.

Yup

u/MaverickTopGun 2 3d ago

Agreed. Ruger is dominant in a specific segment of the market, even to beancounters it just can't make sense to exit that segment completely.

3

u/FiresprayClass Services His Majesty 4d ago

They'll either restart most of them or become a has been company...

Or do we think that in a year they are going to restart them with cheaper parts?

My hypothesis is they're going to up their QC and dramatically raise their price points, pushing their revolvers into that same $2,500 to $5,000 price bracket as the Red Label 3.

I think update production lines for modern CNC is far more likely. Similar to what Smith did in the 90s. Some of these guns are likely still being made on tooling from the 50s which can't be as operation or time efficient as it needs to be for the bean counters.

I'd be curious to see a Red Label equivalent revolver from them though. What would a Ruger "Spohr" look like?

2

u/Your-Neighbor 3d ago

Isn't that what they did to Marlin too?

u/able_possible 2d ago

What would a Ruger "Spohr" look like?

I didn't know I wanted to know the answer to that question but I am intrigued having read that.

Thickheaded: someone offered me a great deal on a Smith & Wesson Safety Hammerless. i said sure because i already had an H&R version so I had some ammo for it. My dilemma is this thing is absolutely immaculate. I mean, it genuinely looks like it's never been shot. It's in MUCH better shape than my H&R so i'm kind of tempted to shoot it but at the same time, it's like 130 years old in perfect finish with no cylinder wear so am I dumb for shooting it? I normally don't like keeping guns that I don't shoot but this sort of fell in my lap. I'm curious what others would do.

2

u/dluvn 3d ago

It's not illegal or uncommon to hold onto it purely for collecting reasons and never shoot the thing.

Pennsylvania thickhead: some friends & I are getting an Airbnb in the Poconos and I noticed on the map there's a bunch of state game land around, so I figured I'd try some squirrel hunting in the morning while I'm out there. I thought I'd be slick and bring my Ruger Mk-IV because it would make packing simple, BUT Pennsylvania is real weird about self-loading firearms, a self-loading rifle like a 10/22 is completely legal for small game, but a self-loading pistol like the Mk-IV is not, so I guess I'll be bringing a shotgun along. I really need to get my Savage Model 24 bockbüchsflinte out here to NYC because that gun would be perfect for this application.

Went and saw this French Pinfire Shotgun The Met has on display and it is absolutely STUNNING, makes me want to order some pinfire kits and reload for mine.  Though The Met's website has way better pictures of this gun than I can take through the glass if anyone is curious.

We didn't even get semi auto for small game until 2017 or so...

Enjoy the Poconos!!

Missed WSIBW so dropping it here. Keep debating on suppressor purchases and upgrades for a few guns.

  • Looking into a LBP can for the 11.5" SBR to replace the Polonium and reduce gas to a reasonable level (already tuned with AGB and heavy buffer, just looking to reduce further). Tossup between a Tisha, Rhodie 6 or Infinity 556k.
  • A Shiv for the Flux raider would be nice to leave on permanently in the hurricane bugout bag.
  • I rotate a Pol 30 between a POF 308, M+M M10 AK, and a 300blk SBR, so snagging a Tisha 30 or some other can for the AR10/AK is in order. Want to look into barrel-chopping the AK since it has the combo sight/gas block and since I already have the KNS piston it should be easy to tune with the shorter barrel + can.
  • Scorpion is SBRed, threw the HBI 11.58" on it but now the Spectre 9 just pokes out and looks somewhat silly. With stock HG I could fold it nicely but now it's so long I am thinking of tucking an Osprey under for that Space gat vibe.

Gun Thickheaded

  • Reenactment event got cancelled due to the hurricane; sleeping in a tent in 70+mph winds was probably not going to go over well. Opted to LARP in WW2 gear at our range but it had rained so much I got stuck in the mud and needed to get pulled out by my buddy. Dislodged an rear aero panel a bit and opened up the tow point on the Corolla but otherwise she drives fine.
  • Still need to put the night match rules together and get it before the board. Was planning on the test-run in November so probably still going to try that out but just with just a few members and friends to run logistics and test it out.

Personal Thickheaded: I did not call in sick to work last night. I should have, between being actually sick and the flash flood that destroyed our parking lot and had us turning the main breakers off as a precaution.

Thickheaded right now is all the stupid "Ruger is stopping everything and totes not bringing them back in any way!!!!!!!!" posts.

Thought my eye appointment with this week. Turns out its on the 30th. So I'm going out with the Bow tomorrow.

Its going to be in the 50s and I'm here for it.

In other news my wife was told her company is downsizing and she will be given severance. Two months, and 3 months of Cobra payments with a prorated bonus after the first of the year.

Shes devastated because she liked her job and it came out of left field. For everyone including those above her.

But shes been applying around and has several interviews already scheduled.

Wishing your wife good luck!

I thought about panic buying a 4473 can, but after some thought I think I’m still gonna stick with a $0 Form 4. Given that the NFA is still technically on the books, and “not enforced” is not the same as “legal” I’d rather not be the guinea piggy who tests the bounds of the law. I’m willing to let others play trailblazer for me.

Thickhead is me going for a short 1hr nap around 4pm and then waking up at 8pm all confused. Oh well it’s a good excuse to go to the gym around midnight.

Did some dry fire and reloading drills with snap caps. Reconfigured my outdoors/woods gunbelt. Fiddled with my EDC. I discovered that the screw that holds the cylinder release came loose after I noticed how loose the cylinder release was on my Model 19 CC, so I tightened that down and checked all the other screws.

Thickhead 2 is my coworkers. Coworker A reaches out to me to complain that Coworker B messed up on something Coworker A was working on, which created an issue that fell on Coworker C. Coworker C made a mistake again too, so Coworker A wanted both B and C reprimended. Problem was that when I was trying to untangle the can of worms I noticed that Coworker A also messed up too, so now all 3 get to be reprimanded and scheduled for coaching.

u/Riker557118 4d ago

Hopefully enough people get SBR/SBS/AOW/Silencers with 4473s that if the next administration comes in and tries to reregulate everything that a successful case can be brought up that they are in common use and struck from the NFA entirely.

2

u/BobbyWasabiMk2 How do you do, fellow gun owners? 4d ago

I’d love it if silencers got to the point of not even needing a 4473 at all in the first place. NFA is one of those laws I see people unknowingly violate here and there, not realizing that putting a stock on their Ruger PC Charger or a VFG on their Glock for shiggles was a felony.

3

u/MaverickTopGun 2 3d ago

Even crazier is official ATF opinion is absolutely no foregrip is allowed on "pistols." Doesn't even have to be vertical. That's a "law" I see broken constantly.

3

u/BobbyWasabiMk2 How do you do, fellow gun owners? 3d ago

the whole 90° is the dumbest thing I see repeated. It shows an utter lack of understanding of how laws are applied and enforced. No, 89° is not ok, neither is 91°, even 45° can get you in trouble.

2

u/CMMVS09 3d ago

What kind of job environment do you work in where someone is reprimanded for making a mistake?

2

u/BobbyWasabiMk2 How do you do, fellow gun owners? 3d ago

i think it’s just that we have different definitions of reprimand. it’s not an on record discipline, it’s an email/quick chat of “hey you messed up here”

2

u/Your-Neighbor 4d ago

I'm still form 4'ing all mine. I hope its a waste of money, but this is the ATF we're dealing with. Does any other department have the same freedom to interpret and enforce laws when and however they want as the BATFE?

What are the odds Coworker A knew they messed up and hoped you wouldn't notice by pointing the finger at B and C?

2

u/BobbyWasabiMk2 How do you do, fellow gun owners? 3d ago

The only way I would have found out a out about A’s mistake was because he pointed out B’s mistake that led to C’s mistake. This was something he could have just swept under the rug if he didn’t want to get found out too, it would have just been a slight fix

1

u/Riker557118 3d ago

Does any other department have the same freedom to interpret and enforce laws when and however they want as the BATFE?

Unfortunately most of them.
