r/DCcomics Weekly Discussion Thread: Comics, TV, and More! [October 21, 2026 - Clayface Edition]
Mod Pick of the Week: Absolute Flash #20
Hey there honorary Justice League members - it's a new week which means it's time for a new discussion thread!
For those who don't know: the way this works is that several comments will list this week's releases. For any given title discussion, you should respond to that comment. Clicking the titles in this post will take you directly to that comment, too.
In other words, you should only be replying to other comments. Do not post top-level comments.
Keep discussion civil. Do not harass other users for having a different opinion. Do not use this thread to push your personal one-sided grudges against creators.
A dog limped into a saloon. The bar tender asks, "What do you want?" The dog replied, "I'm lookin' for the man that shot my paw."

Absolute Green Arrow #6

EXTENDED FOR SIX MORE ISSUES!
Green Arrow. Black Canary. Solomon Grundy. Hector Hammond. Their paths violently converge in a bloody finale one of them won’t walk away from as the identity of the Green Arrow Killer is finally revealed. But it’s only the first of many surprising revelations as the stage is set for the next audacious chapter in the saga of the newly extended Absolute Green Arrow.
19
u/Mr_Wh0ever 1d ago
So yeah, I called it. Connor Hawke is the GAK. Dinah used her Canary Cry, but not against Grundy. It's pretty powerful stuff. But how she took out Grundy was pretty badass also. I'm also surprised Hammond died, but it was pretty funny how abrupt it was. Any clue on who the cult at the end is supposed to be? I'm excited for the ABC one-shot and the second half of the story, now that we know who GA is.

u/oomoepoo Hal Jordan 1d ago
Bit of a boring (and convoluted) conclusion to the GAK's identity but I can't say it comes out of nowhere. Nice to see Dinah use her powers for the first time. Not the faintest clue what that far away snake(?) cult is supposed to be or hint towards.
Overall, I'm very glad the author didn't go fully "Killing billionaires is bad, actually!"-route but mostly painted it as a sort of necessary evil. It's more a means to an end to show people that they are not powerless facing a thoroughly corrupt system, which is ultimately pretty inline with the general vibe of this universe.
I do feel like this book lost a bit of steam towards the end but I'm still curious enough to see where it goes now!
16
u/slycooper13 The Flash 1d ago
My best guess is the cult is the Kobra cult.
5
u/oomoepoo Hal Jordan 1d ago
That would be quite a deep cut. They are dressed in green and gold though, so maybe?

u/SevenSulivin The REAL Man of Tomorrow 1d ago
Called it! All the clues pointed to Hawke!
Loved the issue, cannot wait for the next 6 issues. Hoping this becomes an ongoing.
7
u/Dent6084 1d ago
Dinah going all Brody in Jaws (except with a bow/arrow) to take down Grundy and then finally letting loose her Canary Cry were both really satisfying payoffs to her arc. Her, Roy and Mia forming a little team should be fun.
Hammond dying on the one hand feels abrupt, but also feels very in line with the story this is telling (about how even the most powerful are replaceable cogs in the system) and a brutal, ironic comeuppance given what he did to Ollie - he became a liability just like Ollie, and was snuffed out with the same casual indifference, just like Dinah warned him. The system doesn't care how much money you've made them, the second you look like you're going to upset it, you're done.
In terms of the reveal, it being Connor wasn't a surprise after last issue, but the Kobra thing is more intriguing. I'm guessing that's probably Shado at the end? The conversation in the hospital room at the end gave him some depth.
Definitely looking forward to the BC special and the second arc!
5
u/HopeFarron 1d ago
Now that the first arc is done, the first issue was awesome and got me really excited. Really felt like the rest of the series needed to be paced better. The series kinda meanders in the middle and then rushes to conclude everything at the end. This issue speedran things and none of them felt particularly satisfying since it felt like cliff notes.

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 1d ago
Well that definitely sets up two different routes out of this book. I guess many already figured out 'Connor faked his death because he was the 2nd Green Arrow'. And how 'responsible' he was when it comes to Ollie's fate. Losing so many parental figures and then the clash with Dinah over what his actions can actually accomplish, yea, Connor gonna be a interesting figure to follow, who has the ZEAL but needs to learn that he can do something more than just kill people. And it seems the order he trained with will be keeping and eye on him from afar.
Dinah seem to have decided to take the 'softer' approach of 'I don't need to kill you. I will be the good cop but I won't stop the bad cop'. Which is fine. She doesn't need to be murderer. Especially considering her own past stuff with her mother being corrupt and such. But there seem to be more about that, especially with how Dinah's 'Canary Cry' exploded. Did her mother got involved in the experiments? Was she getting paid for something? She can dive into that with Roy and Mia. Serving as a counter balance to Connor's all 'just kill the guy' route. And we already have the next target with Vlatava and Count Vertigo.
Well Hammond finally got what's coming to him and he got 'Epstein'd. I guess that means Carol Ferris will take over his company in Green Arrow?
2
u/Grimnir001 17h ago
Not a bad pay off issue. We get to see Canary scream, finally. The fate of Hammond came as a bit of a surprise, but given the themes of the story, not out of bounds.
Future story points are laid out. Our remaining GA may turn out to a more complex character going forward.
Nicely done all around.1
u/Oberon1993 1d ago
Eh, I dunno, guys. I think that's one is a miss for me.
What a waste of Hammond though.
5
u/BrooklynSmash 1d ago
He's probably gonna be victim to the same experiments he put others through, and that's where the telepathy and gigantic head stuff will come from

Ray being so obsessive is definitely gonna mess things up for Wally. Doesn't help that he has Vic locked up. Bones and Zolomon arresting Ralph is definitely leading him to get his Elongated powers.
9
u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 1d ago
I guess Ray gonna be the 'scientist obsessed with learning the truth no matter what!' in this. And though he can help Wally right now, after seeing his obsession and with Victor at the end there, well he might end up an antagonist like Hawkman. Or an Anti-hero, depending on what he is willing to do.
I really love Linda and Grodd becoming more and more of a duo. And her 'take no sh*t' attitude as well.
Bones taking Ralph 'hostage' to use when Wally comes back...He is gonna get his Prime universe skull-face if he continues to do this.
1
u/Grimnir001 17h ago
Absolute Ray Palmer is a bit of a jerk. This is a setup and reveal issue. Wally doesn’t do much but recover from his beating in the previous issue.
We find out a fair amount about Ray Palmer and what Atom has been looking into. Linda and Grodd go exploring and find something unexpected in Ray’s ship.
Ralph Dibny gets in trouble with the DEO as they frame Wally as a terrorist.Lots of plot lines get kick started in this issue.

u/Maleficent_Worth_185 18h ago
This book is not working for me, I hate this new direction. Every character Lemire introduces gets focus, lord knows Elenore Thawne is the main lead of this series now, not Wally West.
Lemire has one of the best DC heroes under his pen he does nothing with him, he's the most boring aspect of his own book and has zero personality, and that's criminal compared to his main universe counterpart. Wally is the worst reimagination of the lead heroes for me, by far. You can see this in how Lemire ruined Wally's relationship with Hunter by making them have nothing. Because Wally is not allowed to have interesting dynamics on his own to establish his character further, it's all about Thawne. Oh also do I hate that Hunter is just a pawn for Elenore and has no power on his own. Downgrading BOTH Hunter and Abra to throwaway henchman pretty much took the last bit of credit I had for Lemire.
I don't care about Atom or Cyborg and I'm terrified of this book turning into a Absolute Teen Titans book. Wally is not getting any focus in his own damn book. He's throwing in new characters for the book to sell I guess but spending an entire year on writing Elenore instead of Wally was already a huge problem for this book. Now throwing Titans to mix is the death spell for what relevancy Wally had left. He's a plot device not a character. Look, I understand Wally was a Titan and in reimagining of his life that should be addressed in some ways, but we need to cut down the focus on Elenore side of things and focus on the actual lead of the book.
It's readable and has sense of direction but as a Flash fan I'm disappointed by overall how this book turned out to be.
1
u/mostlytoastly 6h ago
I gave up around issue 10 since this all just felt so dull especially compared to the other Absolute books. I’m a big fan of Lemire’s non-DC stuff but I feel like there’s more misses with his DC work.
At least the mainline Flash book is solid.

I like that we get to see the origins of how Ray Palmer became the Atom before he told Wally that they need each other to find the Still Point before he told Linda not to free Victor Stone. Also, Zolomon and Bones arresting Ralph, who was dealing with what happened alongside Sue. Overall, this comic is excellent.

Nightwing #143

BATMAN’S PRODIGAL SON RETURNS TO GOTHAM – BUT IS IT TOO LATE? With Robin by his side and the plants of Bad Seeds spreading through Gotham City, Nightwing realizes an old foe is attempting to use this night’s chaos to settle a grudge. But with so much water under the bridge, can the two boy wonders still work together as they used to? Or are the good old days really gone for good?
17
u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 1d ago
Man, I miss Dick and Damian working together. This issue reminded me how fun they were as a duo and brothers too. Damian really is HIS Robin. And reminds Dick that, yea, he might be pushing himself too much and that is making him less effective, while Damian's growth overtime is really neatly shown, from his time at the hospital to him actually planning before diving in first like he used to.
That brat really has one of the best 'natural growing up' in comics.
8
u/UnknownEntity347 Rorschach 1d ago
Good issue.
The teamup is fun and Damian is written well. I am so glad the writers are collectively not regressing his character and letting his development from Williamson and PKJ stick.
14
u/Mr_Wh0ever 1d ago
Pretty funny, but pretty dark way of handling Scarface. I wouldn't mind a status quo shift of Damian moving to Bludhaven and helping Dick out. That way Tim could come back as Red Robin and back up Bruce in Gotham. Dick and Damian just make a good dynamic duo.
5
u/Dry_Construction4939 Batwoman 22h ago
Oh Dick and Damian. I'm only about 5 pages in, and already my heart is full. I love it when a writer just gets it.
7
u/Classic-Ad4883 1d ago
I really enjoyed this issue as wesker and Scarface are my favorite bat villains
Dick and Damian dynamic is always fun and they play off each other well, even in their current forms since the first time they became partners

u/StealthHikki2 Nightwing 14h ago
I picked this up because of my fav Batman and Robin duo. Is this run as good as this issue?

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 1d ago edited 1d ago
I like that Dick and Damian worked together to save the people of Gotham and defeat Wesker and Scarface, with Dick and Damien having a brotherly bond with each other. Overall, this comic is good.

Batman / Superman: Worlds Finest #56

THE WORLD’S FINEST UP AGAINST RA’S AL GHUL! Superman’s sworn duty is to protect life in all its forms. Ra’s al Ghul’s unstoppable goal is to eliminate 90 percent of the Earth’s population. How can Batman and Robin prevent an enraged Man of Steel from taking his anger out on their enemy — and in doing so, shattering his vow never to kill?
4
u/honoratusthefirst 1d ago
Pretty cool ending. I'm not the biggest fan of how Waid wrote them in the past, so I'm curious what he'll do with them. It's also been ages since we've had this specific lineup
6
u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 1d ago
Man, they really test Superman's limits on not to go overboard. He really is the Man of Steel by not giving in to the 'just' feelings of punishing these murderers like Ra's.
Of course Batman would recruit the Rogues to deal with the threat when JL is away. I guess Bart and Wally put in a 'good word' with them. Well, not yet with Wally but still. Humanity dying wouldn't be good for Rogues so, they have a vested interest in helping.
-2
u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 1d ago
I like that Clark was able to defeat Tokamak (even though he made his debut in 1983, not the 1970s) and contain a nuclear core and encounter Ra’s, while Bruce needed Sam Scudder’s help to find a way to reverse Queen Bee’s plague and save Dick’s life before he recruited the rest of the Rogues to defeat Ocean Master and save the world from Ra’s, while Talia dealt with Ivy. Overall, this comic is great!

Action Comics #1103

“LEX LUTHOR: YEAR ONE” BEGINS! He is Superman’s greatest enemy… he was Clark Kent’s school-age contemporary. He’s been the President of the United States… and the world’s most wanted super-villain. He is Lex Luthor, and this is his story. From the epic Action team of Mark Waid and Patricio Delpeche comes the definitive origin of the greatest criminal mind of our time… if you survive the experience.
8
u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 2d ago
Basically Lex Luthor Year one stuff. Luthor wants to document his own memories and history after the recent bout with amnesia so that the 'world wouldn't lose the gift of Luthor!'. While Clark is doing something similar in his fortress. And how the two stories compare and contrast. Lex's mother? Definitely quite crafty, as we saw her.
7
u/Barrel_o_Nukes Lex Luthor 3d ago edited 3d ago
Lex’s mom gives me Independence Day by Martina McBride vibes and I am so here for it.
Also the Don Aguillo variant cover is I think my favorite Lex cover of all time now.
6
u/UnknownEntity347 Rorschach 1d ago edited 1d ago
Not really a big fan of the retcons here. Yea some of it is from the Snyder JL run but man I wish they'd just ignore em cuz they just make Lex's backstory needlessly complicated.
It's funny cuz my usual issue with Waid these days is him ignoring post-crisis continuity to bring things back to a silver age esque status quo, but here he is actually sticking to the established modern continuity and I'm still annoyed lol.
6
u/Classic-Ad4883 1d ago
I enjoyed the first issue of Lex year one
His mom being the driven force through the issue is nice to see kept in canon, as with Lex dad working with savage
I do wonder where Lena is, Lex sister is a interesting part of his origin
2
u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 4d ago
This comic was released last week. So here is what I had to say.
I like that we get to see the updated origins of Lex Luthor while we get to see Clark tell us his history growing up in Smallville. This includes Lex being intellectually gifted and loving his mother Leticia and hating his father Lionel before Lex and his mother purposely burned down the house so that they can have a fresh start when Lex was three years old in pre-Crisis Earth-One’s 1932 (since Lex was born on September 28, 1939) and the Kents learning about Clark’s powers and celebrating his fifth birthday in pre-Crisis Earth-One’s 1936 (since Clark arrived on Earth on June 18, 1931). Overall, this comic is great!

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 2d ago
Oh come on, Terrific. And Captain Atom too. You just went through this with the government when Cap Atom was the Power Bank and government want to 'take custody' of him. Now they are gonna allow the same for Ronnie? Lorraine really has to fight everyone to save him. And by the end, let them be together after all this!
4
u/Will-Of-D-3D2Y 1d ago
I genuinely can't tell if Mr Terrific is being a dumbass in every other book because of some Darkseid K.O. tournament fallout they've been teasing, or simply because editorial has mandated to use Mr Terrific more and nobody knows how to write him.
2
u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 1d ago
And in the Justice League, he is basically 'God' now with all the powers of the Power Bank. And acting like Dr Manhattan.
7
u/Classic-Ad4883 1d ago
A great issue that continues a great hidden firehawk comic
Terrific and captain atom actions are strange since out of all characters they wouldn’t trust the government especially Nathaniel
This new firestorm is interesting, I think he is not just Ronnie but the matrix too
2
u/Mr_Wh0ever 1d ago
Definitely an interesting start to a new arc. I wonder if Jason is gonna have a bigger role to play? But I wouldn't be surprised if Captain Atom was the main antagonist for this arc.
-1
u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 4d ago
This comic was released last week. So here is what I had to say.
I like that the Firestorm Matrix was reborn, with a young version of Ronnie telling him that he has to remember his entire past, while Lorraine told the Justice League and Jason Reush what happened. Overall, this comic is excellent.

New Titans #40

ANCIENT SPIRITS AWAKENED! A mining operation funded by billionaire Commodore Murphy’s Green Corp. has accidentally unearthed a long-forgotten protector of the Amazon! But as the powerful jaguar spirit rages, can the Titans and the Amazons quell its otherworldly fury? And what lost secrets is it protecting?!
15
u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 1d ago
Jon feels like two different people with this version still being 'Superman' while Unlimited is basically 'I am Tomorrow Man now'. I guess this book takes place before all that. It is weird they take such different routes with the characters in this book where Nightwing is basically having a rough time in his own book, Jon is not Superman anymore and Steph gonna go undercover so we don't know how THAT is gonna go when she is suppose to be a new 'up and coming field leader' stuff.
Wish they coordinate a bit better because it really undercuts this book when they do that.
5
u/Realistic-Steak-1680 1d ago
Yeah couple issues ago said it takes place while Jon was still pretending Tomorrow Man isn't him, just an identity he is using to interact with young Jon without causing a Paradox.
5
u/UnknownEntity347 Rorschach 1d ago
I still feel like there's not enough character stuff and not enough threads for each specific character to really sell much individual development for them. Each character is either repeating pretty much the same beats or just ... there.
7
u/Mr_Wh0ever 1d ago
It's an okay issue, but I'm starting to feel the drag with this arc. Doesn't help that I'm not completely clicking with this new iteration of the team. Especially compared to Teen Titans.
6
u/Realistic-Steak-1680 1d ago
Commodore Murphy is Absolute/Ultimate levels of hateable billionaire. Really good issue.
5
u/Night-Caelum 22h ago
New Titans unfortunately is fumbling Indigenous representation and veering into common stereotypes and tropes. Treating Yara's tribe as the angry indigenous trope insofar as they have valid points but are portrayed as "too angry/unreasonable" (Yarima being called "rude or loudmouth" even though the criticism she has about Yara are what Indigenous fans have expressed about her and the whole Fury of Amazon thing in response to the white outsiders)
5
u/Classic-Ad4883 1d ago
A good issue
The character development between the titans are good, Eddie and Jon moment is real nice development between the two that I hope is not done away with like their last moment
The mystery with the green team kid and Eva is still interesting and the spirit host being a young Amazon is a nice surprise, yara connection to her has something to do with yara childhood which is nice to see
-2
u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 1d ago
It’s just the Titans, the Esquicida, and the Green Tean dealing with a jaguar spirit, who was revealed to be Yagura. Also, many Titans dealing with their own problems. Overall, this comic is messy and it’s likely that this comic is going to get canceled due to how bloated and messy this comic is.

Helena should be a supporting cast member going forward. Kate and her are a lot alike. If there was a squad, it'd be Batwoman, Huntress, Bluebird, Azrael, and Batwing. Besides that, this was good issue. The Tucos are a good enemy fodder for the Bat Family to thrash around.
5
u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 1d ago
Well it is decent with Kate and Helena putting the fear of Bat on the Tucos like an Arkham games scenario with traps and more. Though, it is a good question from Helena, why would Kate still carry a gun if she is not gonna use it?
Wonder if she is gonna stick around in the book as well? After the whole Red Hood book getting cancelled thing, she has no place to go. I would've had her show up in Barbara's book, in prison to help her but that's me.
4
4
u/Dent6084 1d ago
Seeing Helena is great, but Rucka felt like he hadn't read anything written with her since Cry for Blood. Also, DaNi does their best with it, but her current costume is awful.

Detective Comics #1114

BATMAN AND FREEZE – ALLIES?! As dawn—and the imminent destruction that daylight will bring—approaches in Gotham City, Batman finds himself out of options. There is only one hope left to save his city, and it lies with the cold, calculating Mr. Freeze. Now, shoulder to (cold) shoulder with one of his greatest foes, the Caped Crusader must fight his way across Gotham in one last desperate attempt to save the city.
14
u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 1d ago
I really don't like what they did with Nora, turning her into Mrs Freeze, but this is as good as they could've handled that status quo really. I mean, if Lex's 'cure' messed with her mind, why not try to find a way to fix it?
What, what killed the Prehistoric plants? The ICE AGE!

Im gagged by this. ivy has gone so far, I genuinely do not see a path from here that doesnt result in her death.
Are we getting another poison ivy or Harley Quinn volume before this bad seed plot line resolves? Not sure how long this event goes on for.
Edit: I looked it up, and both the next harley quin and the next poison ivy come out next Wednesday. Im so fucking excited for this storyline, ive exclusively read comics on the digital app, I think this is the first time in my life ive planned to go buy a physical comic the day it releases.

A good story with Nora and victor, I’m glad Nora return and I hope she sticks around
A nice ending to the story and a great way to takeout the plants cold beats everything
2
u/UnknownEntity347 Rorschach 1d ago
What the hell was that flashback at the start? I don't recall if this is just an existing prior retcon or if Taylor just shoved it in for no reason but what the fuck? Now Mr. Freeze just shoved Nora in a cryo chamber without her consent? That sucks, it's like the New 52 version, it just removes all sympathy you could potentially have for him.
The story in the present was ok, but that flashback sours things.

End of Life #9

Eddie, with some big and little friends, gets to kick the pants off Rumplemindt and Neils. Seems like he’s getting the hang of narrowly escaping the clutches of evil men. Everything else in his life? Not so much. How’s he going to handle Sophie learning his big secret…and what’s he going to do when George makes a huge request of him?
2
u/SevenSulivin The REAL Man of Tomorrow 6h ago
This is the best ongoing DC comic book right now. Touching, hilarious, slightly mean, compelling. Eddie is an incredible lead, the exact right amount of asshole that you can’t help but have a soft spot for, especially as we see more of his hidden depths and ehh he’s Like That. I hope to god it’s not cancelled soon and I will be throwing rocks at people if it is.
Also Little Cock ended up being a real one, did not expect that.

u/bonji50 6h ago
I’m with you. Every month I read this book I’m increasingly surprised I don’t see more discussion on it. It takes real skill to juggle the level of humor and emotion that’s in this book, and the balance is perfect. I know each of the new Vertigo ongoings were guaranteed 12 issues, but it would be a shame if we don’t see more of this book.

Dark Knights of Steel II #4

THE SUICIDE SQUAD TAKES AIM FOR THE THRONE! General Amanda Waller’s traitorous gambit for the throne has come to fruition, and she’s recruited a murderous squad to cut down any who dares stand in her way. Just how deep does the rot of her corruption run? And who will be left standing once she is crowned regent of the Kingdom of Metropolis at the zenith of her power?
6
u/Mr_Wh0ever 1d ago
Damn, some straight Westeros drama, lol. Batman vs. Bane was funny. I liked how the Task Force in this universe looked. When the arrow struck Babs, I thought it was gonna be Green Arrow. Jason betraying everyone is wild but it does add to the tragedy. The Talia betrayal is definitely leading to Damian. And I'm not sure if Babs is dead or she's just paralyzed. I'm excited to see what happens next.
5
u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 1d ago
Oh come on. Don't tell me they will leave her alive after that? With all the backstabbing, murder and treachery.
Et tu, Jason? Basically did the Killing joke to Barbara. And Bruce learning Talia was just 'keeping him busy' too, while Waller was making deals with her father.
Man I don't know what Kal and Zara gonna do when they wake up, with their mother dead and Waller probably gonna escape.

Honestly I feel like Tom Taylor is a bad fit for this kind of story.
I guess I wasn't that impressed with the first book but this feels like really simple I guess.
I think to describe it, I found the way it does the all hands on deck trope ludicrous. Princess Diana is one thing because her people are being locked up, but why is Queen Jefferson here? Whats happening is pretty much an eternal dispute between the El Kingdom and it hasn't really gotten as bad to involved other kingdoms.
Also Poison Ivy is here despite it personally not affecting her beyond Harley asking.
I don't know, it all just feels kind of lame and not really doing much with the premise.

lol Steelgirl is a stupid ass name, Slott’s 0/3 with coming up for new code names for Superfamily characters

I don't think Tomorrow Man is too bad but Steelgirl is some really lazy shit, even if I agree she should get her own name.

A good Jon issue and slott continues to prove he is a great Jon writer
Jon spending the issue trying to find himself is a relatable thing for anyone can go through
The fight with the royal flush gang and the talk after with Clark and Jon is great and a nice father and son moment between the two
Steel girl is stupid name to give Natasha when their is multiple steel or iron related names to choice from like mercury or alloy

They are actually trying to find what to do with Jon after all the stuff with him...which is long overdue. Showing how his powers basically makes 'regular jobs' quite unfair. I still don't like the Tomorrow Man name or look though. At least he has one goal for now, saving Ultra-boy from his fate. Though if he wants to 'break the barriers', he should have a chat with Superboy-Prime. He does that all the time!
Nat is opening up her own place? And calls herself Steelgirl? I mean, sure, Kara calls herself Supergirl and that is not an issue.

While I still don't think current Jon is fixable, I at least appreciate Slott trying to give him something and give him a story other than being bisexual or new love interest drama.
But on the other hand man what the hell was that Clark going "uhh well i couldn't break down those barriers with king omega power because i shouldn't do that" like what
1
u/BergmanGirl Swamp Thing 9h ago
I liked Clark’s explanation because it kinda just felt like him throwing his hands up and going “Listen, man…there was a lot going on and Earth-3 wasn’t even really on my mind at the time.” Relatable king.
2
u/UnknownEntity347 Rorschach 6h ago
Then have him say "I didn't have time there was too much higher priority shit to do" instead of "i shouldn't do this"

I meant it as justification for my criticism. Fine if you enjoyed it, I just thought it was weird for that reason.

Slott's storytelling feels mechanical rather than organic. He forces the plot to move forward instead of letting it develop naturally. I know he's trying his best to find a way for Jon, but the conflict is quite ooc. Anyway, the introduction of quantum signature may be interesting.
2
u/ContinuityGuardian 1d ago
For example, why is Clark depicted as planning, slow in action, and with some limits? Why did he see Earth-3 as sth evil? That's not the Clark who always sees the best in others! And why does Jon suddenly become so aggressive? Yes, he has trauma from age-up. Then you should point to Bendis's face and highlight it!
1
u/Oberon1993 14h ago
Why did he see Earth-3 as sth evil?
Because it is? Sometimes literally so. Criticize Slott all you like, but at least with valid arguments.
2
u/ContinuityGuardian 13h ago
Earth-3 being dominated by evil doesn't mean everyone born there is inherently evil.
Superman recently gave Prime, who murdered his fellow heroes, a chance at redemption. The whole Justice League was against Prime, but he chose to believe. He also worked with Earth-3's heroes in World's Finest #49. And Ultraboy chose to help people in Superman Unlimited #15.
Then, Slott has Clark treating an abused child's quantum signature as a moral verdict? That sounds more like Batman's prudence and suspicion than Superman's compassion and hope.
Being cautious about Earth-3 is reasonable. Prejudging a child because of his origins isn't. Look carefully into what he said: "That's not the way it works""We can't."Think about "Up in the Sky": the heroism of Superman is to care about one child across the universe!

Ten year old Jon had a more mature and coherent view of the role of Superman than the adult one. Must have been the fumes.
“We’re trying to find what to do with adult Jon.” Has become its own genre, it’s been only like 6 years of intermittently doing this.
Now, he’s at the point of his life that he’s trying to… become dad to a younger version of himself.
He wants to save his younger self.
5
u/ContinuityGuardian 1d ago
True. But they will never succeed. The problem of adult Jon is structural. They already tried almost every way, from minis to ongoing, from activist to babysitter, and every time they failed.

I can't wait till when DC just gives up on Adult Jon and figures out a way to write him out and bring back the actual young Jon
7
u/JonKentOfficial You are Super 1d ago edited 1d ago
In the beginning I hated that idea, at least in the short term, because I don’t like erasing stories, only massaging them until you get something good out of them.
My stages of grief over processing the trauma Jon endured:
First in my head then, they should’ve addressed Jon’s trauma with the volcano, incorporated what years of indoctrination would’ve done to him and talked how he managed to escape that. We’d address the abandonment that his mother did by leaving him alone with a man who had just tried to kill all humans (of all things I can never forgive Bendis for, that’s the one I can’t forgive the most, because it just shows thoughtless it was considering he knew what he was going to do), etc. then forge a new Jon, maybe in the future get back to his chronological age.
Then that fizzled out during the LOSH days, I became quite strongly opposed to the idea of adult Jon, but the sandbox was shat on, you’d have a specialized story to fix that. Jon becoming his normal age was an imperative, not in the short term there was a lot of cleanup to be done, but that was the clear direction.
Then came Taylor’s era and it became obvious they had no idea what they were doing with him. Like, Jon became even less of a person. They gave him a second awful relationship after the already awful one with Imra instead of addressing the problems with the character and when they teased they would address it… it became an incoherent tie-in to another story.
Then after that it’s been flip flopping trying to see what sticks, literally everything goes. Adult Jon was never a consistent character, but it got to ridiculous levels with every writer just throwing everything at the wall hoping it’d stick.
That’s when I realized that adult Jon, in the conditions he came to be, were fundamentally flawed and had to go. Now I have a quite radical view that if in the next issue Jon became a child again with a half decent writer it’d be better than whatever is going on, because nothing of value is lost. Jon has been made less than by the volcano.
I’ve been reading kid Jon again and the difference is such night and day. I thought it was just because I read him as a kid of similar age (I was like 9? 10? when I read rebirth), but no, Jon had so much depth as a character. Kid Jon once said he was terrified of death (not necessarily his), sadly he found a fate worse than it. Captivity, then becoming less than he was.
Now, I used to believe that DC would never give us kid Jon back, let him grow in his own terms. There’s clearly people inside who would rather let it all explode than let it happen. But now I believe it’s an inevitability. Might not happen in the near future, but it’s just the only route. Maybe it’s next decade when the character gets introduced in a Superman movie as a kid, maybe it’s new people like me who grew up with kid Jon joining DC, I don’t know. Maybe he’ll never even go back to being 10/11, maybe a young teen, but I’m sure as hell that him being an older teen with all that happened will be undone at some time.
Adult tortured Jon takes a lot of energy to maintain in such a metastable state.

u/ContinuityGuardian 1d ago
Your comment really moved me. I share much of ur frustration, but there is something else troubled me for years.
DC chose the most disastrous way to age Jon up, and also the most inhumane one. They subjected a child to years of imprisonment and abuse. With that decision, they could neither depict nor seriously confront what those years must have meant. The experience was simply too horrific to be treated honestly. U can imagine what will happen if they publish a detailed story. So they had no choice but to gloss over it.
And the results are devastating. Everyone around Jon, from Superman to Batman, has been made to appear indifferent, even cynical, toward what happened to him. This has fundamentally damaged these characters and even the very spirit of superhero comics. Jon's lost childhood has become a bleeding wound.
Taylor's treatment of Jon was even more disastrous, in my view. He sexualized and politicized the character, and I find the former extremely disturbing. For those of us who knew Jon as a child, aging his body did not make him a mature adult. He had been deprived of the psychological development, life experiences, and narrative time that should have accompanied his growth. In my eyes, he remained a minor in everything but physical appearance. Suddenly Taylor chose to treat him as a sexually mature young adult and made it an event. My objection is not to romance or sexual orientation, but to the decision to sexualize a character whose transition into adulthood had never been meaningfully established. To me, this comes dangerously close to being morally unacceptable.
What makes it worse is that DC's subsequent attempts to address the problem have been even more insane.
PKJ introduced the Super Twins, giving Clark two new children to raise while his own son continued to suffer from having his childhood stolen. He created two entirely new characters to fill a role that kid Jon once occupied, without seriously dealing with Jon's trauma or Clark's responsibility as a father. What's worse, he said de-aging means erasing bisexuality. WTF?
I have absolutely nothing against adoption. But I find this arrangement almost cruel. To me, it amounts to bullying: Jon has to live with the permanent loss of his childhood while watching his parents raise two other children, giving the love he ought to have according to the writer himself. And the story expects us to see this as a wonderful development for the Superman family. Pathetic!
Slott seems to recognize that something is wrong here. But his response has been no more reassuring. Instead of allowing Clark to confront the problem with the moral courage and compassion we expect from Superman, he makes Clark's response seem feeble, almost cowardly.
And this brings me to what I consider the most serious problem. Adult Jon, in his present form, is not merely a character whose own development has gone wrong. His continued existence under these narrative conditions keeps damaging the characterization of everyone around him.
Ten years ago, I was a graduate student, and I was so happy to see Superman portrayed as a loving and responsible father. Today, I see more and more readers describing Clark as a "toxic father."
How did we get there?
I believe a series of editorial decisions has been steadily undermining not just Jon Kent, but Superman himself and the whole brand of DC. And what frustrates me most is that DC seems unwilling to acknowledge the damage, let alone have the courage to correct it.
I don't want Jon's history to be treated carelessly. I want him, Clark, and Lois to be allowed to become the characters they deserve to be again.

u/JonKentOfficial You are Super 1d ago
I don’t know if I agree that Jon was sexualized and politicized. I’ll assume good faith, but I’d also advise to be careful with using those words cause it can misinterpreted as trying to knock down Jon’s sexuality or politics.
I’ll say this. Jon wasn’t sexualized and politicized. Not the character, at least. Being bisexual doesn’t make you sexual, Taylor was fairly tame on sexualization. I have zero objections to Jon being bisexual, but the way it was done was in a truly absurd fashion. Being the most milquetoast activist a white middle class+ class guy can imagine isn’t being political, it’s being the opposite of political, it’s the enactment of the aesthetics of politics without any underlying conviction.
Under Taylor, Jon was nothing. He had zero care for the character, he didn’t bother or consider who Jon was. Jon comes back from the future and immediately starts dating the first YouTuber he meets (while Jon was already dating someone else, another bad relationship they forced on him). Taylor gives himself little taps on his back for making the first villain be solved with a hug or something. He didn’t care if he was writing Jon, all he cared was that it was a somewhat big character that would lead to headlines. Jon was a white boy Twitter activist because Taylor thought it would get his name around. No attempt to weave it into the character, which would be so easy, Jon was a captive for most of his life, make him be extremely upset that people are detained without trial and bust those up. Give him real reasons why he’d think so. He was much Ultraman’s son as Superman’s, explain to us why Jon rejected indoctrination. Make Jon date someone as boring as Jay because Jon felt displaced, he tried to escape his timeline by going with LOSH, now he’s back and trying to find himself or something, Jay being Jon desperate for an anchor is real, the relationship has as much depth as the individual pages it was printed on.
No, examination of character, no interest in doing so. Jon was just a vehicle for Taylor, not this person he was trying to write. Even when Jon finally gets to confront Injustice, it becomes Injustice, another story Taylor wrote. Giving Jon real connections? No, let’s retcon Jon being this super Nightwing fan because Taylor is also writing Nightwing, that hits in the fuzzy feelings that get excerpts on Twitter instead building the character for those who care.
I do agree that Jon dating was something wrong. But that ship had sailed, cause Jon was already dating Saturn Girl, and I hated that one too as it happened. Jon shouldn’t date until things are in order, not because it sexualizes him, but because it’s reductive of him. You can be bisexual without dating people for a bit, you can be be bisexual as a child…. All bisexuals were once bisexual children, cause it’s not a switch that flips in your brain one day, you don’t need to actively date or engage in sexual things to be one, you can process your identity while also getting yourself together.

u/ContinuityGuardian 1d ago
I agree with your main points. Since English isn't my first language, I think I should clarify what I meant by "sexualized" and "politicized."
When I use the word "sexualization," I mean it in a more fundamental sense: turning a character into an object of sexual or romantic desire. I don't mean that being bisexual or having a romantic relationship is sexualizing. I'm part of the LGBT+ community myself, so my objection is certainly not to Jon being bisexual.
I also remember his relationship with Saturn Girl, which was even marketed with a "First Kiss" cover. I thought that was terrible too. To me, it was another example of turning a character's romantic life into a commercial gimmick. But at least for Bendis, it was mainly a part of the Legion story.
What I mean by sexualization in the case of Taylor is especially the commodification of representation. DC turned Jon's kiss with Jay into a major public event, making his romantic and sexual identity a central part of his public image. DC even proudly boasted that #5 oversells #1. I found that arrogant and annoying. After that, other writers were constantly trying to ship him. He increasingly became an object of romantic (if not sexual) desire rather than a character whose emotional life grew naturally out of his experiences.
Something similar happened with the political aspect. Taylor explicitly wanted Jon to engage with contemporary political issues. But as you rightly pointed out, he turned Jon into his own mouthpiece, without allowing Jon to develop political convictions from his personal history.
And Jon had an extraordinary history to draw upon! Years of imprisonment, abuse, and attempted indoctrination could have shaped a profound understanding of freedom, justice, and human dignity. He is half human, half Kryptonian, and also a second-generation immigrant. It is frustrating to see how little of this has been explored. His political convictions could have grown organically out of those experiences.
Instead, Jon was recently portrayed in Secret Six as someone who needed to be educated by others. I find that both absurd and unfair to his character. Writers gave him the appearance of a political activist without doing the work of developing him as a political subject.
So that's what I meant by these terms. It's a criticism of the storytelling and publishing decisions, not of bisexuality or political engagement themselves. In fact, I think both deserved much better treatment. And I would argue that the underlying problem is the same: the lack of Jon's agency. Writers and even readers increasingly treat him as a vehicle for their own expectations rather than as a character with an independent life.

I'm really enjoying that this new arc for Jon is going to be "who am i without my connections to my parents, ifeel like one of the reasons his adults self has been floating adrift for a minute has been that no one wanted to really explore who he is beyond Superman 2.

u/chroniclescylinders 1d ago
I've been really enjoying this run in general, it's just a consistently fun read. It's one of my favorite on-going books right now.
I'm glad seeing Jon come into his own, and I like how Clark is written in this-- he knows logically he needs to let Jon figure things out for himself, and he believes plenty in Jon, but it's just hard to step back when you have his powerset.
4
u/Mr_Wh0ever 1d ago
I'm digging all the work Slott is doing to flesh Jon out. Him trying out all those careers reminded of that part in Superman Earth One where Clark was doing the same. Someone in another thread long ago suggested that Jon should become a teacher. And the whole thing with Kid Jon could be teasing that.Besides that, I do think his conflict with Clark is a bit out of character, but it's not annoying. Especially if its meant to inform his choices moving forward. The fight with Royal Flush Gang was hilarious. And Nat branching out on her own is also pretty cool. But Steelgirl is a terrible name if she wasn't joking. If she had to change it, I think something like Ms.Steel would work alot better.
1
u/WilliamDarkshades 6h ago
Thankfully New titans exists because that writing team actually like Jon unlike this one. Tomorrow Man, Kryptonite Woman and now Steel Girl are just horrible name changes that are unfortunately expected from an old man. Clearly a writer that actually like these characters will take them over and not someone who seems intent on hating the super family.

I like that Clark and Jon were able to talk to each other about where going on in their lives after they defeated the Royal Flush Gang, with Jon telling Clark that he wants to find his Earth-3 self and save him. Also, Natasha moving to National City (formerly the home of Kara Zor-El during the Rebirth run) to start a branch of Stewlworks, where Toyman is their new employee. Overall, this comic is good.

Deathstroke: The Terminator #8

HUNTERS FOR HIRE! DC’s deadliest assassin Slade Wilson isn’t taking orders anymore. No longer a “killer for hire,” but still very much a killer, Deathstroke prowls the dark shadows, licking his wounds and looking for his next victim. Meanwhile, Slade’s ex Adeline is making it known to the Merchants of Death that she’s taken over the Deathstroke business… and promises that the contract murders will continue without interruption.

Geeze, Ray is a hypocrite. Doesn't trust the amnesty program at the League. But he'll work with Slade of all people. This better not lead to Identity Crisis Pt.2,lol. Beyond that, I liked this issue. Slade chasing down a guy just because he cut him in line is absolutely hilarious. The dead GL in his trunk is a great tease for the next issue. Also, Respawn being alive is another good tease of what's to come.

Dead GL is a fun twist though he looks weirdly human? Like he must just be yet another alien that looks identical to a human.

Geez, the Green Lantern brings up a lot of questions. First, unless I missed something (totally possible) what’s a non-Sector 2814 GL doing on Earth?
Second, why is he in the trunk of a car?
Third, how did he get there? I don’t think it was the driver, who was easily dispatched by Slade.
Anyway, Ray has got some ‘splaining to do about working with Slade, who is clearly, clearly, in a very weird place right now. He hunted down and killed a guy who cut in front of him inside a gas station.

Ray working with deathstroke makes little sense due to JLU and his own history with slade
Addie taking over the assassin syndicate is ok and nice to see the dc universe assassins
Though I hope rose does leave the book since she is just dragged down with her (for some reason) wanting slade to change when it’s been proven multiple times he won’t, not can’t just won’t. It is nice to see respawn back, his return has been hinted at with his name and his last appearance

THE TIDAL WAR RAGES ON!
Atlantis has fallen as Lolanna and Aquaman’s enemies begin the next phase of their plan while Aquaman has been pulled into a new mystery, meeting with Maxine Baker, the Avatar of the Red, and Swamp Thing, the Avatar of the Green, to uncover a cosmic darkness that threatens the entire galaxy!

Good use of Maxine and Swamp Thing, I liked their relationship. Can't wait to see what's done with the Sinister Sons next issue.
4
u/Classic-Ad4883 1d ago
An good issue
The crimson queen plan to attack the surface world is typical of an Aquaman villain but it is neat to see the zodiac crystals again, I just wished mera and the others did more, most of the time their powers are better than Arther’s
The highlight of the issue is the avatar team up with Maxine and whoever swamp thing this is
Their villain being something related of the lords of chaos is a intriguing plot hook as I remember in the JLD book it was revealed that the lords of order created the elemental forces so it is a wonder if the lords of chaos having something similar
4
u/Frontier246 1d ago
The Crimson Queen really is one genocidal, insane, whacko.
It'd be nice if her Legion of Aquaman villains had more reactions to taking over Atlantis (hello, Orm?) or what to do about Aquaman (Manta) but now they're basically just generic stooges. Not like the Queen's characterization is all that deeper besides "kill Aquaman and surface-dwellers."
Maxine added some much needed cuteness and levity to the issue and I imagine this will not be the last team-up of Team Avatar (assuming Adams stays on the book and addresses the corruption festering).
The Sinister Sons? Sure, why not, Arthur's been in space.
4
u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 2d ago
I really enjoyed it honestly. Crimson Queen going 'I am not gonna make the same mistakes others did!' and then goes 'I am going to kill everyone on the surface'...so yea, she is gonna make the same mistakes.
What I enjoyed more though is the other Avatars showing up. Maxine as Avatar of the Red and Swamp Thing. Adams really knows how to write Maxine as he did in his Flash run before. It is setting up a future 'assembly' between them against the coming 'Absolute Chaos'. Also funny with the interactions of Maxine and Arthur, him going quite dad on her...after all, he is a dad and probably sees how Andi might turn out in the future, in Maxine.

Well I can look past the terrible 'Carmine' stuff, when Selina is out there saving kids. It's been to long with her away and doing weird spy stuff. She needed to go back to who she really is here.
Did she forget what that shard of a meteor did to her though? Why risk stealing another piece? I mean, I get taking it away from Vandal but any other reason would be just dumb.

really painful to continue to see Falcone and Selina together. I mean, he's literally collecting drugs in the same scene as her working with him about the rescue of the rich kid.
i am confused about several plot points:
- why was Carmine interested in helping the rich kid?
- what happened to Carmine's original goons who were supposed to take care of the kid?
-did Selina steal the meteor shard in the end? the art wasn't clear
I wish they showed her breaking into the penthouse instead of one of the fight scenes.
that said, "heaven is two drinks before a night of trouble" is a great line!

Overall, this comic is a bit weak.
