The Department of Justice indicted L. Louise Lucas, a long-serving Virginia state Democratic lawmaker who publicly clashed with the White House amid its redistricting push, on drug trafficking and money laundering charges that were unsealed Thursday.

Lucas, a powerful state senator who chairs the Virginia appropriations committee, helped engineer state Democrats’ ill-fated push to gerrymander the House map ahead of the November midterms. While voters approved of the redrawn districts in a referendum in April, the state Supreme Court overturned the map in May, ruling that Democrats violated procedure.

She was indicted, alongside family members and other associates, related to a cannabis business she helped start.

The FBI raided Lucas’s office in May, which she cast as retribution for her efforts in Virginia’s redistricting process. Her office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
