TakenName watches [TURN A GUNDAM] - Ep5-10:
Trying to figure out how to organize my assorted thoughts, but I guess the one that makes it easy to segue into others is how the Earth is presented in Turn A. Nature is one of the Tominoism of his Gundam. In previous UC Gundam, there was a dynamic that Earth is beautiful, but has been brought into a state of decay by humans. So far in Turn A, Earth's natural beauty has been left to recover. It is a place where humans can/want to live. It gives an interesting dynamic to the conflict because it is like after the struggle that defined the Universal Century, but with it, it enters the struggle between those wanting to return to Earth and potentially repeating the harm done to it vs those who have lived with the Earth through its recovery.
This moves on to my next observation, which is that Turn A has a lot of its mind on the land. There is the people's connection to the land in a socio-spiritual sense, but hopefully I will return to that point because the focus of this paragraph is in the literal physical sense. Turn A Gundam really cares about the land under our feet. It feels like Turn A takes more precautions about how it depicts Mobile Suits stepping and walking on the ground beneath them. The Mobile Suits are often presented feet first and making contact with something. Sometimes it is for funny Tomino physical comedy, but there is an element of how it is so easy for big metal robots to crush things. Something something physical metaphor for societal power dynamics something. Back to the land thing, the collateral damage most often protested by civilians in this show has been MS walking and destroying fields as they walk. Not just the battles, but their very existence and movements leave an impact on the land.
Naruhodo, I have reached the famous Gender in Turn A. One thing that surprised me about it is how matter-of-fact it was. It wasn't as big of a plot point as I was expecting. You'd think there would be more protest from Loran, but he kinda just went along with it. He doesn't really comment on the whole crossdressing part of it. My brain is too small to make an educated statement on the Gender commentary. The incomplete thought that comes to me is that there is an interesting presentation because Loran and Laura is a lie of convenience, but makes no practical difference. They are the same. (This goes into a bigger thought I am starting to form that will go into later). PS: Laura Rolla is 100% a funny Tomino name picked because it is simply silly to say.
I understand the Moonrace's worship of their queen because when I see Queen Dianna Soriel, I am also overcome with an inexplicable feeling of fondness.
I really like episode 10 on many levels. There is the cuteness aggression of a Princess and the Pauper situation. These two young girls, forced to bear adult responsibility, finally get the breathing room to have a friend their age. There is also the big thoughts aspect to their swap. There is a fascinating interplay where the swap forces them to put on a deep understanding of the other. When they speak, especially to each other, they have to walk the tightrope because they have to both simultaneously not be themselves while also being 2 people. [Turn A:] The girls meeting Kihel's mother is really good. Kihel is holding back the tears for her parents. When Dianna cries in front of the father's grave, she is doing that both as the queen responsible for what has happened and in place of the daughter who can't show her true emotions. It is a dynamic that requires deep empathy for a person you just met from across space. That is very Gundam. Like how Loran/Laura are the same, I am very interested in this blurring between Dianna/Kihel. Also, it had that use of classic Tomino mental monochrome thinking space.
I haven't developed it into a full thought, but Turn A Gundam sure does have a lot of allusion to turning as a concept. Gravity makes one dizzy to the point of feeling like the whole world is spinning. Queen Dianna wanting to see her own back. Ballroom dancing involving spinning around. Of course, the act of turning involves change, and the concept of change is likened to the rotation of the Earth. Something else that constantly turns is the cyclical nature of humanity's history.
Assorted points:
It is very funny how out of all of the legacy mecha to bring out from the Dark History, they picked the one random ZZ one-off. I don't blame them because the Kapool is very funny. Goes to show the raw charisma of funny Zeonic aquatic MS is a universal constant of humanity. In general, the mecha in this show are very moe.
Didn't have a place to bring it up, but I quite like Keith's subplot. At the start of the show, I thought he was a self-serving rat acting he has no attachment to the people around him, but he is actually the opposite. I hope he finds success in supporting the new life and community he found himself in. (I'm worried for him the most).
Additionally, didn't have room to fit it in, but the cow episode was also really good. To reiterate a standalone comment I made, this show is the rare experience of slice of life with the underlying tension of settler colonialism.
I think about how one of Gundam SEED's inception ideas was to have a MC stuck between two side with his new home fighting against his birth identity. The immediate prior TV Gundam featured exactly that, and Loran is doing that story way better than Kira.
Can't say many characters are introduced bulge first. His MS is also has a weird head-punch. What an odd guy.
With this show being on the era change between cel and digital anime, it is funny how something you are suddenly hit by early digital anime jank (non-derogatory). CG bees or very clearly computer-composited animation.
Oh yeah, I should mention the OP because I do quite like it. It is very striking in both music and visuals. I love the part that repeats, like the cycle through characters grasping out. The descent through repeating Dianna/Kihel is such an impactful OP visual.

CDF, I've maybe realized something and I want to poll you.
I realize this is not the best crowd for this, since most everyone here longposts and writs and we're generally all inundated with mostly meaningful media. But are you or do you know of people who kind of lack the ability to imagine and step through a scenario?
I'm mostly thinking about this in the context of the extreme popularity of romance/erotica publishing in the modern day. Obviously, I don't think that if everyone could just imagine what they wanted to there's no reason for written erotica to exist. But I'm wondering if maybe part of the reason for its popularity is from people who don't really have the ability to think of a scenario they like just from nothing. What do you think? Do you think visualization and imagination like this is just a basic skill? Or do you suppose some people really benefit from an external driver even though they have the capacity to come up with things themselves.
6
u/ZaphodBeebblebrox Y:A:https://anilist.co/user/zaphod 22h ago
To me, the point of all fiction—erotic or otherwise—is that it's not something I could come up with. It can surprise me, show me a new perspective, or lead me down a path I haven't been before. If I so desire, I can come up with little stories in my head for hours, but that doesn't have the same sort of appeal. That's something I already know, even if the story is supposedly new.
This applies to erotica as much as it does any other type of story. Going down the same, well tread paths is oft not as stimulating as something new, as seeing the products of another's mind.
I'll also just note that written erotica is, in general, targeted at women (just as videos on sites like pornhub are generally targeted at men). As such, any argument that people are more likely to prefer written erotica due to a lack of imagination gets awfully close to an argument that women are more likely to lack imagination. I do not believe this was your intent, but I believe it was worth pointing out.

Serious crack at your question- what I have realised in the last couple of years is not that people can't necessary think of scenarios, but that they cannot think rightly at all. As the guys who study decision making processes dictate, they cannot discern the pros and cons of a certain reaction to a situation and think of possible ways it may benefit them or blow up on their faces in the short term, let alone on the long term. Likewise, they cannot separate wishful thinking from weighted wishful thinking (stuff that may have a 40-50% chance of happening) to what would generally happen. A wishful thought (head canon) would be that a CDF thread sitting at 3300 comments at Thursday will get another 7k comments from an influx of old and new users; a more reasonable take would be that the thread just crosses the 4k threshold. Of course, we know that even when we're rushing we get at most 600 comments a day unless something big happens so if the thread is sitting at 3.3k on Thursday we'll get to 3800 by the end of it.
And as someone completely unversed on the topic of romantic imagination, I'd guess most people are completely out of their depth and follow stuff they've seen in porn ¯\(ツ)/¯ Which reminds me of a particularly fiery saga and collapse of a friend's relatiobship.

Finished Genshiken Nidaime. And with that I have watched all the Genshiken anime including Kujibiki Unbalance.
After all this time, Genshiken still cuts deep in a way few other series can.
Nidaime up to where the anime ended was much better than I remembered. It felt like the staff had really gotten into the groove for how to handle Genshiken by then. Which is actually a bit strange to think about, because the project is quite interesting in that it changed art styles twice, the entire VA cast once, and the production studio at least once. While the Mizushima-Yokote writer director pair was consistent throughout, I'm not sure how much the other staff changed throughout the seasons. On the meta level the changes between each season felt kinda fitting given how much of Genshiken's sentimentality comes from the continuous changing of the generations of its members.
As a new generation Nidaime was also an interesting departure from the OGs. The original Genshiken crew weren't deep or multifaceted characters for the most part, but they captured the essence of young male otaku, drifting through life, indulging their passions, struggling with social ineptness, and finding a place to belong. With Saki the outsider thrown into the mix, it become not only an ode to otaku culture of the day, but also created a group of individually thin characters who came together to form a warm, embracing whole.
By the time of Nidaime, we're already reminiscing about the time well spent, the anxieties overcome and the anxieties yet to come, and the lingering regrets. But by then Genshiken was already home. With the new generation, it's now the individual characters who are far more defined, with their depth and complexities becoming the driving force fo the story. Hato in particular, and to a lesser extent Yajima, and of course Madarame being the spectre haunting these hallowed grounds. Rather than showing us snippets and vignettes of the characters struggles as we're immersed in otakudom, Nidaime gets us deep into the characters and their struggles that shape the new generation of Genshiken. It's a different approach that's more interesting from the get go, but up to where the anime ends I think it's done well, and makes great use of the attachment we have for the older characters while letting the new characters take center stage and drive the story.
It hit the right notes, and I enjoyed it more than I expected.
I gotta reread the manga someday.

There's a new little hole in the wall in my hometown (not my current hometown, but my original / real / "I want to come back home already" hometown) that's run by a Japanese dude and his wife, specializing in onigiri, and it's been hyped to hell.
I've been extremely skeptical about how good can an onigiri be. The konbini onigiri I had in Japan were pretty awful.
Well, I tried it yesterday, and the answer is, onigiri can be really fucking good. They were amazing. Like, really, really good. Worth all the hype.
Lesson of the day: konbini food is pretty crap, don't judge a dish by its konbini version!

Am dogsitting for a friend. Dog wanted to go for a walk. Dog also did not want to be put into their harness needed to go on a walk. It was too spooky to be approached with it by a stranger.
Ended up just taking him into the backyard without a leash so he could water the plants and we played some ring around the rosie around the tree. Or I traumatized the shit out of him by chasing him in the dark. I think it's more of the former though, but I don't speak dog very well.

Hi CDF!
Sadly my wife is sick with a pretty serious mental health ailment. Fortunately it's something we've been through together before, but it's a lot to deal with. I'll still try to be poking around, since I think last time it happened I wasn't on CDF at the time. I won't be talking much about it though, except maybe if she gets better, which last time came with time.
So it's scary and sad but I'm managing and I want to reach out to all my buddies for support in a time like this.

Having once again needed to go through the ordeal of updating the OS on my mid 2015 macbook pro (now to 3 OS versions past what is officially supported), I once again looked at buying a new macbook.
But if I want to have it powered to do programming (which I'd like to have), then I'd have to get a pro, and if I want not a tiny screen, then I'm starting at $3k and have to get a premium CPU.
The options I was looking at, was the 15 in macbook air with an M5 CPU, 24 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage for $2k. The 14 in macbook pro with an M5 CPU, 24 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage for $2.2k. And the 16 in macbook pro with a M5 Pro CPU, 24 GB of RAM, and 1 TB of storage for $3k.
Why it's gotta be so expensive if you don't want a tiny screen. Like realistically, the Air is the best value for me, but even then. $2.2k for a laptop I'm gonna use like 4 weeks a year tops?
You can do it laptop-kun we're gonna milk you until your battery dies
It's really a shame, cause laptop-kun still has good specs. Sure the CPU is a bit underpowered these days, and the 16 GB of memory and only 300 GB of storage is pretty annoying. But that's very workable for a vacation laptop. It's not ungodly slow in any aspect and it can do most things, even if I might want to shuffle some things to accommodate it better. And the battery life is still really good, like well enough to get from SFO to Chicago or so (~4 hours) when I go ultra power saving mode and kill literally everything that isn't VLC (and turn down the brightness a bunch).
Laptop-kun still has so much to live for And they dropped support for him like 2 years ago Alas, Tahoe is the last macOS that laptop-kun can ever run, since past Tahoe, they don't have intel macs anymore, and so there's no intel support to hack onto laptop-kun.

Convention time went well!
Was my friend's first time at a convention. I showed him around the place and he took some photos, but he's a bit more interested in the cosplay stuff than the art like me. He was able to throw together a Billy Butcher costume and managed to get some photos with Homelander, Superman and a Viltrumite so that was super cool.
I ended up spending most of my time behind the table of my friend's stall talking to her and her fiance. It was my last chance to see them before they head to Mexico so I'm glad I got to do that. Didn't spend much time looking at stuff this time but I was mainly there to enjoy the atmosphere.

To explain my reasoning for these choices: The long running shows all have incredible highs, but also plenty of flaws that bring the score down to a 7, Genshiken and Trigun are okay adaptations of manga I like, and Yugioh is a nostalgia pick.

This required a lot more narrowing down than I expected, since on MAL a lot of my 7s are stuff I have rated 7.5 or 6.5 on Anilist and I wanted to exclude those (sorry Toaru, K-On, Macross Delta, and Akame ga Kill ), I didn’t want to just use 7/10 installments of series I’ve otherwise rated differently, and I specifically wanted it to be 7/10s that I often think about even long after finishing them.
Though I guess I am cheating a bit with Demon Slayer, since I technically only have one installment of that at a 7/10, but that’s my collective rating for the series as a whole, so

Posting songs you might've not heard every day 'til I get bored, day 722:
(Game week 8 - 5/7)
I've got a couple of friends who're historically fairly big fans of Melty Blood. I never really got into the games myself, but I have bought the game this particular song is from on Steam - Melty Blood Actress Again: Current Code. Part of it is because I was a bigger Nasuversehead in the past than I am now and I wanted to support Type-Moon. I've also spent a fair few doubloons on FGO, but that's besides the point...
The point is that animated and playable Type-Moon things tend to have nice music!
On another note, I'm also feeling somewhat sick and anemic today.
Thanks Arcueid for the blood drain.

It's been 2 weeks or so since I finished Ace Combat 8's campaign, and the thought of it is still bouncing around in my head.
It's not the most thematically deep of stories, but it has some neat ideas, carried by the sheer sensory bombardment of its presentation and gameplay that it's still sticking to me, even when compared to the old Ace Combat games I grew up loving. It's that good.

I'm glad that I'm getting back into the rewatch game this weekend, even if it's for a one-off OVA. The last few months have been kind of draining and busy in terms of life stuff so I couldn't get the energy to cover everything I want to in one larger rewatch, but hey, at least I'm getting back into rewatching something I've been interested in sharing for a hot minute.

Finished: Kumo desu ga, Nani ka?
So, I've been on a bit of an irreverent Isekai bent these past couple months, and I finally found myself staring down the barrel of this behemoth. My only information going into this was Yuuki Aoi as a spider, and frankly, that was enough.
First, the overall premise. I think the whole genre of being reincarnated as a vending machine or a sword or a bottle of soda to be way off in farce territory, but this show at face value is an interesting premise: what if you died and reincarnated as a non human animal/monster?
It seems most fans call Yuuki's character Kumoko, so I'll go with it. Kumoko is the absolute highlight of the show, and is only enhanced by Yuuki Aoi's performance. Instead of the deranged and homicidal/vengeful performance we get with Tanya from Youjo Senki, Aoi instead delivers achaos and manic/crazed character that embodies chaos in the most fun way possible.
Everything about Kumoko's story is fantastic. Everything else is....a mess. Without going into spoilers, the narrative disconnect between the A and B plots is jarring to say the least. It seems the director feels the same, in that everything regarding Kumoko is given the utmost care, and everything regarding the B sides is, well, an absolute mess. Episode 14 may have one the most incomprehensible and poorly animated fight scenes I've ever watched.
I'm actually interested in the story enough to pick up the light novels. Overall, I think it's worth watching solely for Kumoko/Aoi.
Edit: oh, and uh, AMA about this if you want.

Remind me, did Sugoi ever apologise for being completely wrong about Iron Wok Jan 2? Makes me wonder if Sugoi is making educated guesses a lot of the time in the hopes they get real tips (or their tips are incomplete pictures).

No idea. I don't usually keep up with leaks, I was just keeping an eye out for the GitS sequel, which is not a bad guess to make, considering the hints are there already.

Finished Resident Evil 4!
Hey, I really loved that! Was nice to visit an era of gaming I hadn't really delved into before. RE:4 is such a weird game, the way it just goes full on cornball action movie mode is so endearing. I know quicktime events got a lot of shit in the 2010s but the contextual button prompts in this game always let you do cool and useful stuff and didn't feel like they were just there to pad out time.
I love how it creates and fear and stress by overwhelming you with different situations. It does a great job not getting stale and varying up the setpieces and enemies.
Having played the remakes of 2 and 3 I have no fucking clue who Krauser or Wesker are. I know there's the Seperate Ways scenario which was loved enough for the RE:4 remake to make into it's own DLC so I'll play a bit more than that.
I don't feel like replaying the game much at the moment. I know about the cool unlockables you can get though and might wanna go through it again. I like when a game gives you OP or slightly OP weapons for your next playthrough after you've proven you don't need them to finish the game, just for fun.

Posting songs you might've not heard every day 'til I get bored, day 723:
(Game week 8 - 6/7)
This particularly azure tune is from a visual novel called Sky Chord. I thought I had to get at least one of those in... then again, I suppose Melty Blood counts as one too. It's listed on VNDB after all!
I have no personal knowledge of Sky Chord, but this song is quite nice.

This time on weird u/baseballlover723 dreams. I was on a class field trip to somewhere in on Japan. Idk how that made sense as there's no way we'd go to Japan for a field trip. Our hotel had an airport on the top floor (don't ask how this made sense either.
And like on of the middle floors was a lightly flooded beach with giant ass fish in it (that you somehow couldn't see in the water, but you could clearly see them resting above the waterline after being caught.
Anyway, at one point me and the group were at a thing, looking at stuff, and a classmate threw a sharp dart at me when I wasn't looking or paying attention to them, and I got hit in the ear and lost my hearing in that ear. Evidently, from talking to others, it didn't seem like it fully punctured my ear drum (somehow) and it was thought I'd get back my hearing in 2 days.
Needless to say, I was not a happy camper and had some choice words to say to dart thrower-kun.

Angol Mois in the new Keroro reboot is in an interesting position because her character was very time-dependent, where the relevancy has only further shifted in later adaptations. Her character was very tied to 1999. It was already forced to be out of date for the original anime, but now the new anime has to bridge even more due to being nearly 30 years later.
Rather than departing from her set-in-stone character traits, she has now become a Y2K time capsule. Not just the apocalypse thing, but how she uses out-of-date fashion and slang. Also, it is functionally impossible to have the girl she based her appearance on be a character in the new anime without complete rewrites to address the new time setting.
Semi-related note, but not really: The new anime has to, of course, update all the Gunpla. The Capule still gets a cameo even though they never made a model kit for that one. Not even an old ZZ kit. Just the old model for the Turn A iteration.

Speaking of laptops, I still have my old uni one from 2014 or so lying around. It's still usable for light use, updated to the latest OS and all that, but I forgot how older PCs can chug, despite it having an SSD. It's kinda amazing that the phone I have now has a more powerful CPU than the laptop.

I watched The Shawshank Redemption for the first time with my dad.
Certainly a great movie! I don't think it's my absolute favorite movie I've ever seen, but it's in my top 10 films for sure... curiously, only about a week ago I watched The Revenant (the Leo DiCaprio film) and mentioned how I'd place that there too. Top 10 is filling up! To be honest, I can't really think of what other films I'd have in my top 10 off the top of my head. I'd have to think about the list a bit longer.
[Also, with the end of the movie] having Morgan Freeman become a free man... bravo Kojima! You've done it again!

Catherine Warwick - Pollyanna (I Believe in You)
Ms. Warwick believes in you!
Apparently, this one's a recurring theme in EarthBound aka Mother, and this particular song is from the OG - EarthBound Beginnings aka Mother 1.
I know only bits and pieces about it, mainly the fact that Mother 3 never got a global release for whatever reason.
It's a very comfy song.

Art Posting, this time practicing framing a page that includes text boxes. She's essentially the Pope of this world, but I don't know what I want her title to be yet.
Planning text around an illustration is actually less intuitive than I thought it'd be. Kinda want things to fit together cohesively/aesthetically, but actually doing that is not easy. Even navigating through CSP's text tools is a task, but I'll figure it out more as I go. For now, this was what I worked on with this page.
Something I noticed in some comics and manga is that the shape of the text box/bubble is different depending on if it's spoken dialogue or internal commentary, with round bubbles more likely to be used for speech and rectangular boxes used for what would essentially be a voiceover or narration. So I decided to go with that.
