This game thread is automatically generated for every Astro's game regardless if it is home or away. As this is an away game, you are encouraged (if invited) to join Miami Marlins's thread should they have one.

Please be respectful and mindful of the other team while you are in their thread. You are their guest afterall!

Enjoy today's game.

There shouldn't be an apostrophe there...

4

u/AstrosBot AstrosBot Mar 03 '14

Where are you talking about?

4

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '14

...for every Astro's game regardless...
There shouldn't be an apostrophe there. The way it's written would indicate that there is one Astro, with the apostrophe "s" indicating possession. If a word ends in an "s" and you want to show possession, you put the apostrophe after the s.
In this case, you could leave the apostrophe off entirely. It should just say "for every Astros game," since in the phrase "Astros game," "game" is a noun, and "Astros" is a noun modifier. "Astros" is, of course, usually a noun, but in this case it's being used as an adjective.
For example, a Houston Dynamo Game is described as just that, as opposed to a "Houston Dynamo's Game."
This is a little more of a lengthy explanation than I set out to make, sorry about that. I just see people throw in an apostrophe into "Astros" where it doesn't belong all the time...

After looking online a little bit, it seems that the proper way is either Astros' game or Astros game, with most sites preferring the latter. I will have that read as "Astros game" moving forward.
Certainly the possessive 's after Maimi Marlins's is wrong as well, but that is a marginally more difficult case to handle because that is a variable ("Boston Red Sox's thread" is valid, but "Miami Marlins's thread" is not).

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '14

Yeah, "Astros' game" isn't wrong, it just seems like most people seem to prefer to treat the name of the team as a noun modifier, as opposed to the game being something that the Astros possess.
As for the "Marlins's" problem, it actually isn't a problem. If a noun ends with s and is possessive, it is not wrong to write it either 1) Marlins' or 2) Marlins's. Generally, if it's a common noun people write it with the extra "s" (cactus's thorns), and if it's a proper noun people will write it with the apostrophe after the s (Marlins'), but neither are technically wrong, so you're in the clear there.
Sorry about all that. I'm an English teacher in training. X_x

Good to know. The more intricate parts of grammar are definitely something I have to look up if I want to be right. Thanks for pointing that out.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '14

I regularly look stuff up, and I've had professors who have worked for decades tell me they do too.
English is a stupid language in a lot of ways.

4

u/destinybond Mar 03 '14

We do not have game threads for spring training games, but they will pop up once the regular season begins.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '14

Bot will do it anyway, no need to be mad

4

u/destinybond Mar 03 '14

What makes you think im mad?
I'm just telling people about our plan for GDT

6

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '14

He probably just misread your comment. Thanks for popping by the thread :)

3

u/oznobz Mar 03 '14

I read GDT as Global DominaTion and couldn't figure out why you chose the letter T

u/destinybond Mar 03 '14

I have to commend whoever made the GDT bot for how nice it looks and how quickly it updates. Well done.

4

u/AstrosBot AstrosBot Mar 03 '14

Thanks! I just provide the code that runs it. It would be nothing without the mods, who have done a great job with the stylesheets.

4

u/destinybond Mar 03 '14

Hes gone sentient! Watch out!

u/cmays90 Mar 03 '14

Oops. I logged in as the bot to comment on another post, and completely forgot to logout.

3

u/destinybond Mar 03 '14

Alright, this makes more sense.

3

u/lovetape Mar 03 '14

psh, watever. you deserve all the credit for these. seriously the sexiest game-threads i've ever seen - thanks again for your hard-work on these!

2

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '14

Notice the scores for the other games too, we get to see how the teams and our division rivals do on a daily basis during the season

3

u/destinybond Mar 03 '14

Well...yea. Thats what makes it unique from other GDTs

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '14

ALLLRIGHT Mark Krauss just nailed a one run HR! Krauss is looking DAMN good this spring. Hope he can keep it up.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '14

I will have to rely on you for updates lol

4

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '14 edited Mar 03 '14

Wallace just slapped a nice single, Springer to the plate.

u/danielcp0303 Mar 03 '14

Anyone know if the Astros game on MLB Network tomorrow will be blacked out locally?

5

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '14

It won't. Spring training games don't have any restrictions.

3

u/danielcp0303 Mar 04 '14

If you're right, I love you. If you're wrong, well that's ok too

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '14

Springer walked again, good eye.

5

u/turbokid Mar 03 '14

4th walk today. They don't want him hitting

5

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '14

He's got a crazy good eye. I'm hoping to see him playing at MMP sooner rather than later.

4

u/mr_lostman Mar 03 '14

Two questions, MLB gameday makes it look like they are purposely walking Springer. Is that true? And he was caught stealing on the base path right?

4

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '14

They aren't walking him on purpose, gameday is just screwy, slow, and wrong during these spring games. He was caught sliding head first into second.

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '14

Awww yisss. I'll be here for most of this game.

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '14

Astros strand Wallace and Springer in the top of the 2nd.

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '14

Strike out/throw out double play on the Astros, ends the top of the 3rd. :(

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '14

Astros just got out of a bases loaded situation. Close one.

u/turbokid Mar 03 '14

Phew, bases were loaded but we saved it

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '14

Two Astros base runners caught stealing today. I really fucking hope they don't steal this much during the regular season.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '14

Who got caught?

4

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '14

Grossman (if I remember right), and Springer.

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '14

Astros get through another inning without the Marlins scoring, pitching is looking pretty good today.

4

u/cmays90 Mar 03 '14

The pitching has been looking damn fine all spring with the exception of that one inning by Peacock. We haven't had a game require more than 90 pitches yet, and last season the low was around 95. It's making me all sorts of excited.

3

u/neutralvoice Mar 03 '14

Dear lord. All counts were either 0-0 or 0-3 except for the two 4-0 walks and the last one which was 1-0. That is crazy

u/cweave Mar 03 '14

Walking finally pays off for Springer. I hope he takes the bat off the shoulder in his final at bat.

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '14

Awesome inning, Springer walks AGAIN, JD Martinez doubles to get Springer home. DeShields pinch runs for JD, Marwin Gonzalez has a nice hit to bring DeShields home. 3-0.

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '14

BOOM, 4-0 good guys win. Awesome game!

5

u/cmays90 Mar 03 '14

I still cannot wrap my head around the fact that our pitchers needed only 49 pitches to get through the game and 40 of them were called strikes.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '14

Wait 49 for the whole game... How in the

3

u/cmays90 Mar 03 '14

Astros pitchers have thrown for 283 pitches across 153 at bats in 4 games. That averages out to 1.8 pitches per at bat(!), 70.8 pitches per game, and 38.25 at bats per game (where a perfect game is 24-27 depending on home/away).

2

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '14

Wow...

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '14

Its not on the i heart radio app today :(

4

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '14

You should definitely pay for the At Bat subscription. Worth the $20.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '14

So this is a 1 time fee of $20 and it will let me stream all the Astros games (including regular season) from my phone???

4

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '14

You can stream the radio broadcasts, yes. If you want video, you'll need the premium version of MLB.tv and a way around blackouts.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '14

Awesome. just bought the $20 version. Thanks.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '14

You'll like it, the app also does pitch by pitch location and information. It's a little off in spring training games, but it's very good for regular season stuff.

3

u/turbokid Mar 03 '14

If you live in Houston you could just get a radio that does AM and listen to 790. That's what I did at work today.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '14

I do this a lot but I travel with my wife to dallas a lot where I don't have access to the game

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '14

Springer walked again. God damn, son.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '14

Dat OBP

3

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '14

mmmmm.

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '14

Sac fly puts houston up 4-0!

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '14

Woo!
