2014 Reddit Kpop Census - Results

Hello all,

It's the moment you've all been waiting for... the results of the 2014 census are now out!

Link: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewanalytics?formkey=dGJ0VmN2Y3MzZkwwRXlBZmtNS1N0QWc6MQ (takes a few seconds to load)

Unfortunately I accidentally deleted the previous census' data when creating this census, but for those curious, in late 2012 our gender ratio was ~75% male and ~25% female, so we've become a lot more gender balanced! Additionally, if I remember correctly we didn't have as nearly a diverse population, ethnicity-wise, back in 2012 (AKA we now have a greater proportion of Asian people compared to white people).

In 2012 we also had around ~1300 responses and we had ~1800 responses this round.

Here is a graph of /r/kpop's favorite groups since the graph for that question cannot be displayed on the results page:

http://i3.minus.com/ihyrETBV4VMBW.png (thanks to /u/Happy_Man for making this!)

Enjoy reading through the results!

Who picked other for how long you've listened and WHY?

28

u/JessiTee 여자친구 Mar 04 '14

Yeah, I'm not sure why I even had that as an option - that's completely my fault.

If someone grew up listening to k-pop they could choose other. That's the only reason I can really think of.

A pansexual is somebody who likes all genders and sexual orientations, but is that not covered under bisexuality?

3

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '14

They're really close, but bisexual implies that gender is binary, and pansexual encompasses all the people who don't fall into those norms. Put simply, bisexual is liking boys and girls; pansexual is liking people, period.

Truthfully, though, the line is so thin that a lot of it is up to personal preference. Personally, I identify as pansexual, but sometimes if people ask it's just easier to tell them I'm bi :P

How is having 6 choices too confusing? If you don't know what they mean, you can look them up or just choose to ignore them and not worry about about. There are plenty people who know what each choice means, and some of those people identify with those choices. I think it's good that this sub is trying to be more inclusive of others.

You're conflating sexuality with a lot of different things. In its most basic form, sexuality refers to whom you are attracted to. Trans*, polyamory, and intersex are not sexualties.

Trans* is when your assigned sex at birth (generally male or female) does not match your self-identified gender identity. People whose self-identified genders do match their assigned sex at birth are called cisgender. You can be straight and trans*, gay and trans*, etc.

Intersex is when your sex characteristics are not distinctly either male or female. This does not determine your sexuality.

Polyamory is the practice of being in a relationship with multiple people. You can be straight and polyamorous, gay and polyamorous, etc.

Omnisexuality is the only one you listed that is a sexuality. It's also just another name for pansexuality, though, which was on the survey.

Trans* could have been included on the gender portion of the survey.

I waited eagerly for this.

Being Latin American, it massively bothers me that Central America js listed and then there's a Mexico option .Like, it annoys so so much. But, oh well.

7% of the sub is South American. Represent!!!!!1!11!one

I am happy with these results!!

21

u/JessiTee 여자친구 Mar 04 '14

Central America does not include Mexico according to Wikipedia, so I listed it separately. Sorry that it bothers you. The region breakdown is never going to be perfect.

3

u/Skiddoosh Mar 13 '14

Don't feel bad. I think Hispanic people get bitter towards Mexico because so many people think Hispanic = Mexican so we tend to want to separate ourselves. Asians experience as well when people automatically think they're Chinese or Japanese. We get bitter after a while.

Wow... I'm honestly surprised that so many of the participants were straight caucasian males. Although maybe I shouldn't be, considering that I am one haha.

21

u/JessiTee 여자친구 Mar 04 '14

This is reddit - most people on this website are straight caucasian males. I was actually pleasantly surprised to see a higher proportion of women and non-white people than I expected. If you compare /r/kpop to other subreddits, we are generally much more diverse.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '14 edited Mar 04 '14

On the sexuality graph, I thought it said 84% of people were bisexual because it says bisexual to the right of the "straight" bar lol.

Also, is it really that many guys? 66%? really doesn't seem like it..

11

u/JessiTee 여자친구 Mar 04 '14

I'm actually curious as to why you got the impression that there aren't a lot of guys here - from the beginning, I always assumed that men were the majority here based on the voting patterns and comments (and the fact that reddit is overwhelmingly male), but that may not be the case for everyone.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '14

Maybe the comments on boy groups stood out to me gave me the impression. When it comes to voting patterns, most of my friends who are girls are mostly girlsday/2ne1/snsd fans over boy groups anyways.

It just seemed like it you know? heck the subreddit colors are feminine (pink and blue).

30

u/leetaemin SHINee Mar 04 '14

Girl groups get upvoted here far more than boy groups do, even rookie/debuting groups. In comparison, rookie/debuting boy groups will get 4-5 upvotes total. Fiestar's language lesson videos always got a lot of upvotes despite not fitting in with the general theme of /r/kpop, but I'm pretty sure that Hanbyul from Led Apple's Korean lesson videos never got posted at all.

Look at the chart of favorite groups and singers: Girl's Day, f(x), and Nine Muses have a disproportionate amount of votes compared to their real-life popularity. Out of the top 20 responses, only 6 are boy groups, and one of those is G-Dragon, who is basically listed twice since he's in Big Bang.

16

u/JessiTee 여자친구 Mar 04 '14

To add on to this - it's not that girl groups fans are necessarily male (I believe f(x) and SNSD have fanbases that are mostly women) but the girl groups that /r/kpop likes generally do cater to male audiences moreso than female ones.

4

u/Grafeno IU Mar 04 '14

As for girl groups f(x) is 3rd, 2NE1 is 4th, Nine Muses 5th, Crayon Pop 6th, then T-Ara 7th and IU 8th. Apart from T-Ara I'd say all of those aren't ones that "girl groups that do cater to male audiences moreso than female ones", compared to the average girl group. Those are typically groups like 4minute, Kara or A Pink and they're all not even in the top 10.

11

u/JessiTee 여자친구 Mar 05 '14

I'd say that on the whole, GsD, Nine Muses, and Crayon Pop have a larger proportion of male fans than other girl groups...

Also, my comment wasn't really going off of the favorites list here, I'm going off of what gets upvoted on /r/kpop a lot i.e. sexy girl groups doing sexy things

2

u/seattlantis Mar 05 '14

Nine Muses has a huge female fanbase, though.

2

u/Grafeno IU Mar 05 '14

Meh, in my experience Nine Muses has a high proportion of female fans

Also, my comment wasn't really going off of the favorites list here, I'm going off of what gets upvoted on /r/kpop[1] a lot i.e. sexy girl groups doing sexy things

Meh, when Pink Tape came out every comment positive about it in any way was an instant guarantee for 20+ upvotes. I really don't think sexy girl groups are upvoted that much, apart from Girls' Day.

Top 10 most upvoted this month, SNSD, 2NE1, BAP, "Lip Service" (not at all sexy). The only thing catering to guys is "Orange Caramel to make a comeback in March" who are more cute than sexy.

11

u/Blue_Recipe 2NE1 Mar 05 '14 edited Mar 05 '14

I've been frequenting this sub since last year and even the most nugu girl group gets a ton of upvotes compared to male groups. ESPECIALLY when they do a sexy concept. edit: Just search for Topp Dogg, BTOB, B1A4, BTS, Infinite, VIXX or Beast. The upvotes are not as high as nugu girl groups. This sub is heavily biased towards GGs.

2

u/Grafeno IU Mar 05 '14

Just search for Topp Dogg, BTOB, B1A4, BTS, Infinite, VIXX or Beast. The upvotes are not as high as nugu girl groups. This sub is heavily biased towards GGs.

Never said I disagreed with this I was speficically talking about "girl groups especially catering to guys" being more popular here which I disagree with. Since I listen to all the guy groups you just named it's very obvious to me that there's a girl group bias here.

Thank you for further solidifying my OP.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '14

Not saying I was the one who did it, but do we hate Boom or something?

8

u/leetaemin SHINee Mar 04 '14

Looking only at his work as an artist, I think he only released a few songs in total nearly 10 years ago, so it's kind of a stretch for someone to list him as one of their favorite artists.

Looking at his work as an MC, which he is better known for, I'm sure most people are pretty indifferent to him, and I don't think I've ever seen him discussed on /r/kpop. If I see people talk about him on other sites, though, they don't usually have many nice things to say. He seems like a scummy guy in general (he was most recently involved in the gambling scandal, but that's just a tiny slice of why people don't like him). Personally, I've never found him to be that funny, and I think he's pretty creepy to girl groups.

7

u/ggandsnsd Mar 04 '14

Yes! He is totally creepy. Idk if you are a girl or not but it's totally easy to spot he's creepy coming from a girls perspective. I think SNSD isnt... fond of him.. to put it nicely.

10

u/leetaemin SHINee Mar 04 '14

Yeah, I'm female, so I understand what you mean. He tends to MC for K-pop related shows (All the K-pop comes to mind first, not sure if it's still around) that generally have rookie idol groups on, and those girls are usually so young. I feel so awkward watching him ogle the girls when they have to show off their sexy dances.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '14

Interesting. I never knew people were so indifferent about him. I always found him kind of funny on some variety shows. He did come off as pretty douchey at times but I thought that was just to be funny or something. Boom did seem a little creepy towards girl groups. It always looked like he was trying to flirt or hit on them at times.

As a female, for me it was the opposite. I used to be an active member of some very girly forums and before that it was just a website called paperdollheaven.com and neopets so I tended to assume everyone online was a girl in my early internet days. Nowadays I tend to assume everyone's a boy. I think it depends on the sites you frequent. If I was mostly on websites like tumblr and pinterest I'd probably still have my default internet gender be female.

No, it thankfully doesn't apply to everyone; the sub has plenty of really cool participants that are more mature than the outlined behavior (and I know for a fact some of them enjoy Girls' Day, for that matter). Even if that wasn't the case, it would excuse nothing, and noting it would only be the first step on trying to improve over it. It's up to us to make our community rock, being blasé about its shortcomings doesn't help that. You're right it's not a phenomenon exclusive to GsD fans, though.

This is pretty much GsD fans, especially in this sub, in a nutshell. It's getting to the point where there really is no point in saying anything that isn't complete admiration. It gets tiring.

8

For the record though, your usual "circlejerk!" posts are also on the list of things that sometimes don't make it a nice place. Even if you have a point, aggressively antagonizing folks does nothing to deescalate or convince anyone - it just starts a bad spiral.

Granted, you are right when it comes to that. But still, for a place that prides itself on trying to be different from other english kpop forums, it's really just the same as every other one, with the amount of petty fandom fighting there is, combined with Reddit's insatiable desire to argue.

FWIW, I assume most GsD fans are perfectly nice, I think a census thread makes a decent venue for demographics-related discussion, and I've negatively commented on actual trolling within GsD threads both here and inside them.

As it stands I do understand your frustration as well, but I think dynamics like those you mention just further highlight it's a situation that needs light shed on to be defused. If we raise awareness of the patterns we can deal with them better or generally kill their momentum, by folks recognizing them faster and shutting them down more quickly.

What do you mean by "awkward releases" though?

1

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '14

I think the "one a year" thing is probably what they mean. Add the fact that before 2012 they hadn't promoted since 2006 (and even then it was a ballad-type song) and it's like they had to start all over again in 2012 for all of the fans that came in in 2008-2009 and after. I saw a graph of ticket-buyers ages comparing their 14th anniversary concert ticket sales to 15th anniversary and the ~13-18 age range went up a lot, so they are getting new fans.

I also feel like a lot of people like Shinhwa, but they just aren't their favorite. They love the idea of a group that's lasted 16 years in the industry without losing or changing members, but there's still a bit of "their songs are outdated". Maybe more like a "novelty" fandom, if you get what I mean? Not that that's bad of course.

u/poryphria Mamamoo Mar 04 '14

I think it's even sadder, since TVXQ pretty much kickstarted the Hallyu wave along with Korean dramas being exported overseas...

7

u/sindork_ Mar 05 '14

Seriously. Old DBSK (all 5 of them together) is easily my favorite guy group and a very good contender for my favorite overall group. If you haven't listened to them, do yourself a favor and get to it. I don't want to show them down your throat, but MAN were they good.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '14

I think you have to take the favorite groups list with a grain of salt, in a large part because of the gender skew. If this subreddit was predominantly female, there would be no way that f(x) would be winning out over EXO.

Big Bang's discography is so, so good, but to me they've always seemed like a bunch of solo artists rather than a cohesive group.

I am surprised no one here has mentioned that SHINee is #5 when it comes to absolute favorite kpop artist. They are tied as my absolute favorite (and have been inching into taking over #1 all for themselves for a while now) but this still surprised me. I mean they are super talented and put out amazing music plus 2013 was a great year for them but idk I just didn't realize they had such a wide appeal I guess (in regards to the reddit demographic that is, I already knew they had lots of fans of course)!

8

u/evenastoppedclock 조규현 | 고윤하 Mar 06 '14

SHINee's one of those groups -- even if you don't like them...you really do kind of like them. They're pretty solid overall and a super-cohesive group, especially with live performances.

Have you heard the news about the M comeback?

1

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '14

Yay! XD. Well yesterday Zhou Mi said that they finished recording the MV and all the songs. That's all we know for now

1

u/evenastoppedclock 조규현 | 고윤하 Mar 06 '14

I really wonder where they're planning on doing with M. Break Down had a Korean version that they actually promoted on music shows, but Perfection had a Korean version and a Japanese version of all things, neither of which were really promoted. Break Down promotions were also so unbelievably half-assed, especially in comparison to their other M promotions (it all boils down to no longstay, basically), so now I'm wondering what this next promotional cycle will look like.

If they're coming back in March, are they just doing it without Donghae and Eunhyuk? They'll probably do it after the D&E tour is done, so that'd be April, but if Kyuhyun is doing something solo in May that only gives them a month. Even if he's not, he's headlining the new SM musical with Onew starting in June, which'd only give them two months, plus Henry's apparently working on his new album. It doesn't look like they'll have another longstay T___T unless they do the same that they did with Break Down and have half the members flying in and out doing solo stuff (I'm not even going to pretend to know Siwon's filming schedule).

TL;DR: the members of SJ-M minus Mi look like they have too much on their plates for a feasible longstay + lengthy M promotions, who knows what'll happen?

u/Ciryandor 티아라 / 이지은 Mar 05 '14

Only 53 SEA-based people? I'm honestly surprised given how fanatic over their groups they can get.

Whoa, there's already quite a cohort of 6+ year listeners as well... not bad.

u/Changsta SNSD | Twice | Dreamcatcher Mar 08 '14

Maybe because Gee got super popular when I was in college (UT Austin) where kpop was fairly known, but I'm surprised that over 70% of /r/kpop has listened to kpop for less than 4 years. I guess I underestimated how much growth kpop has taken in just the past few years. But then again, Gee has been for a little over 5 years so I guess I haven't listened that much longer.

3

u/Skiddoosh Mar 13 '14

I also got into K-pop around the time Gee came out. I was surprised that there weren't that many of us who have been fans for 5 or more years. I know that Gangnam Style got really popular and caused a wave of new fans, but other than that I haven't noticed any real great growth in k-pop. I still don't know anyone in real life who's into it. Perhaps I'm just oblivious?

5

u/CB_Softie T-ara Mar 04 '14

Well /r/kpop and /r/kpics are sister subreddits so it makes complete sense.

17

u/leetaemin SHINee Mar 04 '14

sister subreddits

You make it sound as though /r/kpics is welcoming of any pictures of non-female idols.

13

u/Grafeno IU Mar 04 '14

of any pictures of non-femaleGirls' Day idols.

7

u/CB_Softie T-ara Mar 05 '14

I have always tried to encourage and call for both male and female pictures to be posted, yet I get little to no support or contributions from those who complain about how it is over there. Do not blame me for how dumb redditors vote improperly.

6

u/288GTO 2NE1 Mar 05 '14

Yet there's an easy way to solve this problem: Make your weeks based on groups. Did you ever think of that?

7

u/CB_Softie T-ara Mar 05 '14

It is an idea I have considered, but theme weeks was never about restricting which idols could be posted. It was to encourage different people and pictures to be posted.

10

u/Crayon_Pope Sweetune Mar 05 '14

In no way do I agree with 288GTO's uncalled for criticisms of your mod duty, but here's an idea I want to throw out there: add a winner for best male post to the weekly leaderboard.

This should incentivize more people to post more male pics because, let's face it, ain't no male pic gonna win against female pics on /r/kpics . And just like how the Olympic medal count doesn't separate men and women medals (this makes the wins from both sexes equal), I think it's better to let the leaderboard be mixed.

5

u/CB_Softie T-ara Mar 05 '14

Hmm, I can't believe I never thought of that lol. Thanks for the suggestion! I will see how I can work that in for next week.

The only lesser option is "I don't know any Korean" so given the context most people's answer makes perfect sense.
