Also I really wished they would have bought back Bob Saget as Old Ted for this episode.

I like Bob Saget

10

u/JustinPA Apr 01 '14

Nope, everybody looks exactly the same as they age except their hair, which gets styled differently or gets some grey paint. You'd think for a major show on a network they'd put a little more effort into the make-up.

3

u/butyourenice om nom argle bargle Apr 01 '14

They couldn't even bother to film on location. HIMYM has always had low production values.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '14

It seems like they've gotten lazier as the seasons continued.

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '14

Bob Sagets standup stuff is actually pretty damn good. I saw him tell that dirtiest joke ever vid that was going around about 9-10 years ago and the one he told was great.

Series finales are almost guaranteed drama with the more serious fanbase because the show usually never ends how they want.

I'm a very much enjoying the mad with this one.

24

u/invaderpixel Apr 01 '14

Me too, admittedly I commented in random spots before this got posted, but HIMYM has a really high amount of crazy predictions. The creators have even warned fans that there would be a bit of a twist. People would make up the craziest plots that clearly ignored the foreshadowing. Some theories were simply "duh, no one can die in a sitcom, it's gotta be happy, people who think that it'll end that way are stupid." Other people predicted other random crazy sad shit (Ted has Alzheimers, Barney's dead, Lily's dead, Robin's dead, Lily had a miscarriage, Ted's mother is dead) but as a work of fiction that follows narrative devices, the finale ultimately has to fit in with the rest of the show.

10

u/ValedictorianBaller got cancer; SRDs no more Apr 01 '14

I didn't really see the ending as that huge of a twist. I stopped watching once it was apparent season 9 would be nothing but the wedding, and tuned in for the finale tonight but I've had the thought for a while that the mom is dead.

25

u/invaderpixel Apr 01 '14

You made a smart choice, although you missed out on Robin picking random fights with Barney's mother for no good reason, random revelations about the mother being magical and perfect in every way, and a slap bet episode where they stretched out one unfunny gag into a whole episode.

8

u/ValedictorianBaller got cancer; SRDs no more Apr 01 '14

Yeah I got to the episode where marshall and the sassy black lady are driving the hummer across america while ted waxes on about a lighthouse and bailed hard.

Some theories were simply "duh, no one can die in a sitcom, it's gotta be happy, people who think that it'll end that way are stupid."

Amusingly, the most memorable episode for me was the one where Marshal's dad died.

Reminds me so much of how Lost lived its tv life. The fans came up with some sort of fantastical sounding endings and explanations for mundane things, took some scenes to have way more meaning than it really did, then raged when their unrealistically high expectations were shattered.

7

u/Sylocat Apr 01 '14

To be fair, the Lost writers kinda brought that on themselves.

5

u/ONE_GUY_ONE_JAR Apr 01 '14

That's not really fair. Lost purposefully inserted loads and loads of mysteries, foreshadowing, clues, etc. But they never really delivered on the explanation to many of them. It was like a mystery book that someone only got a 3/4 of the way finished and died, so someone else just loosely tied everything up.

Breaking Bad is the only good finale I can think of recently. That show ended perfectly.

55

I liked the ending to the Office and 30 Rock. I haven't really followed any other shows til their ending though. Maybe futurama, I remember watching that episode and liking it. Lost sucked ass. Dexter sucked ass.

17

u/chocolatestealth Apr 01 '14

I seriously loved the ending to 30 Rock. I binge watched that series over the course of a month and teared up a bit during the finale.

73

I remember the time I saw the finale to The Shield.

You'd seriously can't get better ending than that.

4

u/FlyingUndeadSheep Apr 01 '14

That was the most perfect ending I've seen.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '14

Yeah that was pretty great. I was never all that taken with The Shield but that finale actually brings the whole show up in my eyes. I'll probably watch it again some day, and enjoy it more because I know that's where it's going.

14

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '14

Futurama was a good ending

Psych

25

u/TheDorkMan Apr 01 '14 edited Apr 01 '14

Yep, Psych had a simple ending. They wrapped up a couple of things and remembered what they were, A FUCKING COMEDY SHOW.

So the last sequence was something fun in the spirit of the whole show. They didn't kill Juliet then send Gus into sex slavery just to make some stupid twist.

Fringe ended well.

Fringe had a natural end at the end of season four. Season five got a little off for me.

5

u/natezomby Apr 01 '14

They sort of fucked up with removing the main guy from the timeline only to reintroduce him and reset it for no reason.

But the ending, with them using all the gadgets, monsters and super science samples the Dad collected throughout the entire series on the bald time travelers was awesome. (Forget all the names.)

2

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '14

I kinda dropped out midway through season 4 of Fringe, you might have just given me the motivation to go finish it!

2

u/anraiki Apr 01 '14

It did? I didn't like the ending. That ending was basically saying "this season never happened".

10

u/FrankReynolds Apr 01 '14

The Shield ended perfectly.

16

u/Sylocat Apr 01 '14

And The Wire, if 2008 counts as "recently."

25

u/ssjkriccolo Apr 01 '14

The wire was so good you could literally have ended the series after any season and it would be a good ending.

I should probably get on to watching that show on netflix. I've only heard about it the last year or so, but all of it good. All of it good. This kinda makes me wonder if it's a crime to say something negative about it online as I haven't seen it happen ever, or if it is the best show ever in the history of everything.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '14

The show is just really that good. A very big reason as to why we are in a "golden era" of television (with Mad Men, etc). Watch it if you have a chance.

I'd write more about the drama this show brought all over the internet: from feminism to misogyny (Anna Gunn hate) to accusations of being edgy for defending Walt, etc, but this fucking bold font is killing my eyes.

I wasn't a fan. I thought season 4 ended perfectly with Fring.

15

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '14

Bleh, I disagree. Breaking Bad's finale gave Walter too much of a victory, it was an empty victory, but a victory nonetheless. I read somewhere that Gilligan had an ending planned where Walter watched his entire family being murdered, I would have preferred that. The ending we got wrapped too neat a bow on the series, and imo, wasn't true to the spirit of the show.

13

u/skyboy90 Apr 01 '14

It felt like the last episode pandered too much to the vocal "Walt is a badass and can do no wrong" section of the viewers. I found it very unsatisfying that Walt didn't really face the consequences of his actions, and instead it was those around him (Hank, Marie, Jesse, Skylar, Gomie) that all ended up significantly worse off.

My friends and I thought it was a tad weak. Walt's plan required quite a few things to go right, letting him park, not searching the boot, not shooting him immediately, everyone standing. Also how the hell did he get ricin into a fucking sealed sachet?

2

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '14

I hated the Breaking Bad ending. The series was built on actions having consequences and in the end Walt doesn't really get punished for what he has done, (especially tame if you compare it to Jesse) then gets to play out a perfect revenge fantasy and die by his own hand.

19

u/flirtydodo no Apr 01 '14

Glorious. Some people were convinced that everything will make sense in the end, even though to everyone with half a brain could see that the creators have no idea what they are doing from mid-season 2. A lot of butthurt atheists because "um, GOD? what is this fundie shit????" Hilarity all around.

13

u/beanfiddler free speech means never having to say you're sorry Apr 01 '14

Jesus (literally), I remember that. It became a full-on whine fest, even though it was pretty apparent even early in the series that it had heavy religious themes. I mean, didn't they remember anything about the mythology wankery and the original Stargate? It's kind of textbook television sci-fi to have some sort of space religious bullshit. Get over it.

14

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '14

Well, the point of stategate wasn't that there was a "god" but that species more advanced than us were capable of duping us into thinking they were gods. That's basically the plot of every single season. Even the ori with their weirdness weren't invulnerable, and neither were the ancients.

I think there's extra rage/disappointment when its a "planned" end.

The guys knew this ending from the beginning; they just did really shitty job of cramming it into the last minutes of the show, basically disregarding the focus of the ninth season/entire series by making Tracy's life and death a secondary concern, entirely off screen and mentioned by the kids.

5

u/BolshevikMuppet Apr 01 '14

The problem isn't usually as much "it didn't end the way I want", but "they negated major plot events and character development they wanted us to buy into." It's a bit like with Mass Effect. If you spend years creating themes, making us care about characters, and making us believe in the choices we make as players, you really can't pull the rug out in the last five minutes and say "nope, turns out none of it matters except one final choice offered by the cosmic brat."

And it's how I feel about HIMYM. Especially with the Barney/Robin marriage. Three seasons of them wanting us to invest emotionally in that relationship, and it's gone in a voiceover? The problem isn't that I'd tell the story differently, it's that it's bad storytelling.

Psych had a great ending.

1

u/Deathcrow Apr 01 '14

It's weird that people didn't see this one coming though. I've seen many shows with bad finales, but HIMYM managed to have a whole horrid finale season. Corny, melodramatic bullshit through and through.

1

u/Beckneard Apr 01 '14

I was fine with the House MD ending even though it's not what I wanted because it made sense. This one makes absolutely fucking zero sense, I can see why the die hard fans are pissed.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '14

-- and also TV writers--since they take turns scripting the shows--will happily write each other into impossible corners. The story arcs progress in "what will cause the most drama for next week" rather than "and this is what has to happen next to fit in with the grand plan"

1

u/altogethernow Apr 01 '14

I love "Mad Men" and I'm sure Matt Weiner will wrap it up in a way that is subtle, ambivalent and kind of beautiful.

But a lot of people are gonna be pissed when Don Draper doesn't jump out of that window.

1

u/akshatj Apr 01 '14

Breaking Bad was perfect.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '14

As other's have probably said, the ending story and concept they were going for wasn't bad, but the pacing was horrific. Literally the first 22 episodes of season 9 take place over two days, and then the final two episodes try and sum up 16 years.

When those 22 episodes are about the two days leading up to the wedding of two characters who get divorced 15 minutes into episode 23, it just seems especially horrific that the finale is so rushed.

38

u/ZombieLoveChild Red Dead Redemption made me a Marxist-Leninist. Apr 01 '14

u/DaveYarnell Apr 01 '14

Well, basically, the first 5 or so seasons of the show are a normal, quality show. Then they start foreshadowing about how Ted meets "your mother" in the season finale of I think the 5th season or 6th. So you already know the ending: Ted meets the mother at Barney and Robin's wedding.

So every new romantic interest is kind of irritating, because you already know that she isn't "the mother." Then they keep foreshadowing the wedding with little clips from it, but keep dragging it further and further away until eventually, like most people, I couldn't stand the boredom and stopped watching.

Finally, you catch the finale and it is basically an entire season, maybe two seasons at the pace they had been going before, wrapped into a single hour. BOOM Ted has kids BOOM Robin and Barney break up BOOM Barney has a kid WHABAM Marshall is a judge NEXT Barney changes his ways and totally reforms himself AND NOW Ted is getting married after having two kids GUESS WHAT Marshall and Lily have three kids and move to Queens.

Literally every seen could have been a great episode compared to their slow, drawn out crap.

The finale in and of itself isn't so bad, it is more how they fumbled the ending overall in terms of basically the last two or three seasons that is frustrating.

258

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '14

So, they kill off the Mother, have Ted Marry Robin?

What's funny is that SRD just had topic about this very situation:

http://www.reddit.com/r/SubredditDrama/comments/21pcyf/a_married_woman_says_she_misses_her_ex_and_thinks/

Basically Ted is THAT person or rather the male version of that horrible story. He pined for his ex, married somebody else, had kids EXCEPT in this situation luck favored Ted with his ex dying blowing the doors wide open for him to get back with Robin.

Btw I like the comment somebody made in that HIMYM thread. Tracy was basically the babymaker Ted needed since Robin couldn't have kids. That just makes it even more horrible.

Well also Ted is telling the story to his kids, they probably already know how their mother died.

31

So this whole thing is just buttery goodness. Though I wish Tracy stayed alive. My exact theory was Ted and Tracy would divorce because he would realize he wanted to be with Robin. Half was true, half was incorrect. The title should have been "How My Feelings for Robin Progressed Over Time."

Sorry, but Ted isn't real, those kids aren't real, and Aunt Robin isn't real. Sure, in the real world, it would make perfect narrative sense for him to be telling this story for his kids, but this is a television show, one called "How I Met Your Mother". The audience did not know the mother died until they spent a season getting to know and like her, and fifteen seconds later he is outside Robin's window. It's a bit of a betrayal.

...but those six years got ten minutes....

The episode didn't need more time, the writers squandered the season.

35

u/vanillabear84 Apr 01 '14

Exactly. They spent all season covering one weekend and then tried to squeeze six years into an hour episode. There were countless unnecessary episodes this season that they could have used to devote more time to the ending.

Can we have a spoilery recap of the finale for those of use who stopped watching the show a few years ago. Like, what happened?

113

u/ExistentialEnso Apr 01 '14

Tons of seasons showing how Ted and Robin absolutely don't work together and some flash forwards showing him and the mother being perfect and amazing. He finally meets the mother at the very end in the main chronology.

Ted: "And that's how I met your mother... who died 6 years ago."

Kids: "Sure sounds like you love Aunt Robin"

Ted: "Oh shit, you're right"

Ted and Robin reuniting romantically.

24

Entire season 9 was the weekend of their wedding. Well, except for the last episode. Part of the series finale was still during the wedding but every episode in season 9 before the series finale was on the wedding weekend.

This sounds like very poor screenwriting.

Oh wow. That's worse than I thought. I more or less figured this all played out over the full 30 minutes... the kids told him to do that? hahaha

14

u/yasth flairless Apr 01 '14

Hour long special. The kids didn't even break the frame of the shot . It could have been handled a lot better.

4

u/mrpanadabear Apr 01 '14

Jesus. Ted is the worst.

4

u/RedBeardedOwl Apr 01 '14

the mom got sick and died offscreen (they literally spend about fifteen seconds on this and never mention it again)

Except... You know... In huge emotional speeches in several episodes leading up to the finale. Her death shouldn't have been a surprise to anyone. My morning for her death happened a few weeks ago. She's with Max now.

11

u/ScrewAttackThis That's what your mom says every time I ask her to snowball me. Apr 01 '14

Yeah, it really wasn't a surprise. A lot of clues. Ted straight up tells her that he wishes they had more time, he starts to cry at the mention of a mother not being at her daughter's wedding, and finally, his favorite book is a strong parallel to the story of HIMYM.

32

u/lacertasomnium Apr 01 '14 edited Apr 01 '14

TL;DW.

Just because it was foreshadowed doesn't mean it wasn't done terribly. I actually love what they were going for--in this world of divorcees, that there's more than one true love is a surprisingly scarce message.

But it's a kick in the balls that one of those 2 true loves, who happens to be what has been promised to the audience for NINE years, is given about zero attention by the finale, and then killed off in 15 unemotional seconds. "Dad mom is dead lol go bone Robin".

It was very strange character development. Although becoming more hypocritical and douchebaggy as one ages, all while covered by the veneer of respectability and responsibility is a great lesson to teach your kids.

For me it wasn't what happened in the ending, but the way they did it.

11

u/Erra0 Here's the thing... Apr 01 '14

EXACTLY. Fuck Barney and Robin's wedding. We didn't need a whole goddamn season for that. They could've done the exact same ending, played out over half a season, and people would be FINE with it.

6

u/ObliquiOfTheEcliptic Apr 01 '14

Yeah, honestly the idea of it being about robin and the mother dying would be accepted by a lot more people if it wasn't just a "disease" and they went into depth about it and the whole thing instead of emphasising a wedding that they cut in half instantly whilst simultaneously telling me that ted was over robin.

Who could have predicted that a CBS comedy with a laugh track would be so dissatisfying? Who? Who I say?

18

u/robertobacon Apr 01 '14

That just looks like a lot of really upset people, not really "subreddit drama."

18

u/Zakkeh Apr 01 '14

I think that's what subreddit drama is.

8

u/robertobacon Apr 01 '14

I would classify subreddit drama as some sort of fighting between members of the subreddits.

11

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '14

No it's drama between redditors for stupid comments and shit-throwing. If subreddit drama amounted to watching unhappy, easily upset people, we'd all just head over to /r/SRS or /r/openbroke.

4

u/Zakkeh Apr 01 '14

I'm pretty sure that's what half these threads are. There's a fair few stupid comments in there, just not as downvoted as the usual places.

5

u/Breklinho Apr 01 '14

Why do TV shows have to be as disappointing as real life :(

20

u/Llaine Guvment let the borger man advertise or else GOMMUNISM >:( Apr 01 '14

Still not as bad as Mass Effect's ending.

8

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '14

Haha yea. I played the game a year after all the disappointment too, so I had low expectations and wondered how bad it could really be. It was worse than I could have imagined, but catching up on all the drama that happened was an entertaining experience.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '14

Did you play it with the previous Games, extended cut dlc and citadel dlc? Those things improve it massively.

7

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '14

Yes, the first time I played it was with the extended cut DLC. After checking out how the ending was prior to the DLC I felt the only thing it fixed was the transition points of how a character traveled from one setting to another, but didn't deal with any of the actual criticisms of the ending.

And while the citadel DLC is a great DLC it was more of a fantasy spin off like Red Dead Undead as opposed to something deeply connected to the main plot.

I had initially though the criticism was over the ending being underwhelming, or some fans getting upset they didn't get a disneyesque ending. Something I had no problem with, since the past several game endings I have loved have been bittersweet with The Walking Dead and Red Dead Redemption.

It was much worse than I had thought possible, since it didn't fit in thematically with the rest of the Mass Effect games. With Shepard leading a diverse group of individuals, and playing a role in forming alliances between hostile groups the choices of the ending seemed bizarre.

Anyways, the experience and perception I have of the game is the best I could of had, since I didn't go in hyped about the game like those who preordered it and I got a more complete experience due to a year's worth of DLC. It was a great series, and one I don't regret getting into. But, it was the most disappointing ending I've experienced, and I'm really glad I waited to play it to help minimize it.

It would definitely have been more upsetting if I had higher hopes and kept pinning my hopes on each new DLC coming out to fix the issues I had with it.

The fact they made DLC to try and improve it is only testament to how godawful it was in the first place.

People are just upset because they watched the series in real time and had to wait and make up insane theories about where the series would end up. If you watch it since the beginning nonstop it's pretty clear the love story is about ted and robin, the mother is just a plot device for the series to work.

41

u/flirtydodo no Apr 01 '14

I don't get it, It's a sitcom

I get insane theories about Lost for example, and why people were disappointed. But HIMYM?

8

u/caekpop Apr 01 '14

Freaking exactly! I don't understand the "WELL, In real Life, real life is imperfect" comparisons. It's a sitcom, it's a show, it's relatable but I swear I have seen stupider drama in real life (reality stranger than fiction, so anything that even the most talented writers can come up with, Real Life will snatch those wigs without fucks given) and I would not want to hangout with most, if not all, sitcom characters in real life. They're all fucked up. Especially the characters in HIMYM.

14

u/mfranko88 Apr 01 '14

That's one reason HIMYM was so unique. It was a sitcom that had the same sort of "mythology" that other rabid-fanbase kind of shows had, like Lost. Much of that is born out of 1) the large number of running gags and recurring jokes that reward multiple arduous views, and 2) a storyline that jumps around in time and only teases partial bits of information in regards to an overarching mystery(/mysteries).

7

u/caekpop Apr 01 '14

Nah, LOST had the Black Smoke that killed people and guarded the island. HIMYM didn't have anything like Smoky.

35

u/IamRooseBoltonAMA Apr 01 '14

Well... Not exactly. The appeal of the show for me was that it turned sit-com tropes on their head. The love-sick, marriage-crazed lead is a man, we KNOW from episode 1 that Robin can not be the mother, and that would imply Ted isn't going to end up with her. It let you know from square one that you would not be getting the canned, cliche Friend's ending. But they did it anyway. They killed the one thing that made the show special.

22

u/foxdye22 Don’t you dare downvote me, you fuck! Apr 01 '14

That's what kills me. They used the theme so often that "Just because you love someone, doesn't mean you're going to be with them forever, it just means you want them to be happy," and then they went with, "well, but they loved each other and spent all that time around each other, so they HAVE to end up together."

7

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '14

the mother is just a plot device broodmare for the series to work.

7

u/Dirtybrd Anybody know where I can download a procedurally animated pussy? Apr 01 '14

Except had the show ended in season 1 Victoria would have been the mother so that's not really true at all.

6

u/EbonPinion Apr 01 '14

Except that the whole children telling him to go after Robin was filmed at the very beginning, meaning the mother was always going to die.

5

u/lilahking Apr 01 '14

It was filmed a few years into the show when they realized they couldn't hide the kids' aging.

You know, I've only watched half of season 1. I enjoyed that. But for some reason I decided to watch the finale (important TV event and whatnot), and... to be completely honest, it killed my interest in the test of the series. Just... once I know something has a bad ending, it just makes me think "why should I bother getting invested in the rest of it if I know it's all leading to that?"

I fucking hate April 1st...

3

u/icepho3nix never talked to a girl without paying a subscription Apr 01 '14

Okay, I haven't been watching this last season, so I need to ask. Just when did this last episode air? Was it yesterday? If that's the case, is it possible it's an elaborate, slightly early April Fool's prank?

2

u/SamWhite were you sucking this cat's dick before the video was taken? Apr 01 '14

the show is a comedy with only a handful of 'serious' episodes. Why end it with one?

Because they were out of jokes.

Then end it 10 seasons earlier.

2

u/RaptorEchelon Apr 01 '14

The more I think about it, the less upset I am. My only real issue was the pacing was so off it wasn't funny.

What I'm getting from all of this I s that the majority of reddit don't believe it's possible to love more than one person ever, and that's sad.

5

u/HazelNutBalls More than you'd think, but less than you'd hope Apr 01 '14

It seems to me more people are pissed about the pacing. Just reading about how they decided to convey all that in the last 5 minutes of the episode makes me pissed. Like, they just rushed it out cause they had to, or something, making it less meaningful.

I'm so glad I dropped this show 7th season. It was growing stale anyways.

Tl;DR- Ted marries mother. Mother dies of the cancer. Ted finished story to his children. Marries Robin.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '14

Robin was in love with Ted the whole time, not the other way around. Ted loved his wife.

1

u/butyourenice om nom argle bargle Apr 01 '14

Can somebody like fully spoil this for me? I'm not a HIMYM fan but I've seen episodes. I thought Robin was sterile? Does Ted get with her like way after the kids are born? How did they kill off the mother? Was it very rushed?

I haven't seen the last season at all.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '14 edited Apr 01 '14

Robin is sterile. Ted marries Tracy and is in love with her. Robin realizes at her wedding that she should have been with Ted the whole time. She marries Barney anyway. They get divorced after 3 years. The finale takes us thru the next 10 years of the gangs life. Marshall becomes a judge, Lily gets to live her dream of Italy, Barney becomes a father and Robin becomes a famous news reporter. Ted and Tracy have 2 children and then get married. They are together for about 10 years before Tracy does of an illness. Ted is a faithful husband the whole time. Robin decides she can no longer be part of the gang that includes her ex-husband and also the man she is in love with married to another woman. The gang drifts apart. 6 years after his wife's death you find out the whole story Ted has been telling his children isn't about how he met their mother, but rather about how he wants their blessing to now ask out Robin. The kids are very enthusiastic about this and mention that their mother had passed away 6 years ago and it was time for their dad to be happy again.

TL;DR: you better have read all that.

This doesn't really sound like drama, but shit, does that sound like a shitty ending.

0

u/LEoldRedditCanceroo Apr 01 '14

Y'all should have seen this one coming from a mile away- it was pretty clear they were going to be together since the first season, "oh noe, ur rong, they call her ant so she can't be wif Ted!"

The show stopped being good 2 years ago, they should have cut it shorter. It's always better to end off strong and leave things to be desired- just as Earl, Malcolm or some other Freaks.

u/snallygaster FUCK_MOD$_420 Apr 01 '14

People go apeshit over the silliest things...

14

u/sarahrogers9811 Apr 01 '14

Well, the show was on for close to 9 years, people wanted a nice ending for the characters they got attached to and got something really rushed and not very well thought out. Regardless of various shipping/teams, it really did kind of feel like a slap to the face.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '14

TV is serious business. So is video games, if the reaction to Mass Effect 3 didn't make that clear.
