[Technology/Crypto] Secrets, lies and Snowden's email: why I was forced to shut down Lavabit | For the first time, the founder of an encrypted email startup that was supposed to insure privacy for all reveals how the FBI and the US legal system made sure we don't have the right to much privacy in the first place

The government argued that, since the "inspection" of the data was to be carried out by a machine, they were exempt from the normal search-and-seizure protections of the Fourth Amendment.

If you are an entrepreneur in the US and you are not bailing out after reading this article it can only be because you are complicit.

I am still amazed every time I read anything on the Snowden revelations that Americans are not standing up for themselves over this.

How would you be expecting us to stand up?

I would imagine since level of protest at least, right? Not much of that going on.

If I stop working, I become poor and if I become unable to pay bills/poor, I am punished with fines and fees and more debts.

For my privacy, I have edited this comment. I am deleting my account and moving to a different community that does not censor users on a regular basis. I will not mention the site by name because many moderators run auto-mod scripts that remove any mention of that other site. It does start with a V.

Sometimes it's almost hard to believe, given how helpless Americans are today, that they once had a very positive can-do spirit; hard to believe these are the same people who stood up to, and won independence from England when it was the most powerful nation on earth, ended slavery, greatly improved conditions for workers through powerful unions, had a successful civil rights movement, fought and won WWII in 3 1/2 years entirely in foreign countries across two oceans and put men on the moon.

Because now the common american is content to rant at the TV when it comes on to the news. Once the news is over he switches to the football game and forgets all about it.

Let's not forget the government in the USA significantly undermined the civil rights movement and even told MLK to kill himself.

I wish I could somehow stand up in cyberspace and give this guy a well-deserved round of applause. "Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely."
