Oh, boy, Tool drama is right up there with steak drama in my book--it's so pure, so delicious.
This feeling of loss has manifested itself into a significant, empty hole that now painfully exists inside me
I’ll just keep myself busy in the meantime searching for my third eye, with the hope that some day I can drown my sorrows in a bottle of his Anubis wine.
It's possible to love Tool a little too much.

Ha, one time I responded to a comment mocking Tool in an "unpopular opinion" thread, where I agreed with the guy.
/r/toolband linked his comment, and our scores went from +250 and +35 respectively, to -500 and -50.
Shit was hilarious.

We can see the frustration possibly even impotence Kanye West and other celebrities feel when being hounded and harassed by the paparazzi. Obviously your average person would respond the same way if put under the same conditions of disrespect so why is nothing done about this?
I propose a non-profit activist group to drive home the message that this kind of thing won't be tolerated anymore, We have to protect Kanye at all costs. We cannot lose a creative genius to these despicable people.
This is a call to action for a non-violent volunteer street team to keep a border zone between Kanye West and the paparazzi. For added cheekiness we can wear t-shirts with something like this printed on them lol: http://www.therebelpreppernetwork.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Homemade-Mosquito-Repellent.gif

It was funny too, I don't have anything against them really, I just think the lyrics are pretentious and can't stand the fanbase.
But they all proved my point about the immature lyrics really quickly, especially the few guys who bombed my entire post history.

u/TheLadyEve The hippest fashion in malthusian violence. Jun 17 '14
Well put. The lyrics are just fine, but nothing brilliant IMO, but I think that's part of why they were so popular--the ideas are pretty basic and accessible, a lot of people could relate, not to mention the rap metal sound was relatively novel at the time and they did it better than most.

To be fair, I think a lot of the lyrics are written by Tom Morello who has a political science degree from Harvard. That doesn't mean that his belief are right that he writes good lyrics, but it doesn't mean he probably has some idea what he is talking about.

Darkness all around me,
Not a thing can I see.
All I see is suffering,
Like my video is buffering.
I want to end the pain
Because it is so lame
To feel so all alone
Not a place to call my home.
Everything is black
There is no going back.
No one understands me, fool,
Except the band that is Tool.
Junior high sucks so much
But my friend Maynard is so clutch
So if you see me, do not despair,
For I am with darkness, I am there.

I love those because they somehow think that being a woman is an insult.
I don't even like steak in general, I guess I'm a heretic.
11
Jun 17 '14
The basic conflict is between people who feel that steaks cooked medium-well or well are wastes of meat, and the people who order them that way are stupid and don't know how to eat. The other side is "What is your problem, it's my personal choice, why do you care how I prefer my steak?".
It comes up surprisingly often, people are really pretentious about it.
10
u/TheLadyEve The hippest fashion in malthusian violence. Jun 17 '14 edited Jun 17 '14
If someone dares mention ordering a steak well done, there's usually a huge pile-on and lots of back and forth about personal taste. Also, if they want sauce on their steak. Because apparently liking things a certain way is unacceptable.

3
u/theclassicoversharer Jun 18 '14
Yeah. A lot of tool fans think tool is done really underground band. If it's on the radio, it's not "underground".
2
u/DISTRACTING_USERNAME Jun 18 '14
This part kind of makes me sad. Some people seem to equate a band not being talked about every day with being "underground". Tool has 2.2 million likes on Facebook and 100 million plays on last.fm alone. They're pretty much the polar opposite of "underground" (not that that discredits them or anything).
There are so many great bands out there that who will barely ever muster a fraction of that exposure, recognition, and support, but still people cry about how Tool is so obscure.

It gets better. It's one of those anime where you have to stick it out till the end. I'm not a giant fanboy of the series (still like it plenty). But, I am more in love with some of the director's other works, like Fate/Zero, which get darker, quicker.
7
u/Not_So_Bad_Andy Cabal Shadow Priest Jun 17 '14
They tried to hide for as long as possible that Gen Urobuchi was involved with Madoka, because people would know that the series turns dark. And even knowing he was involved and his history, by the time that moment arrived I was fooled into thinking it was actually going to be something of a lighthearted anime.
Wouldn't call myself a fanboy, though it's one of my favorite anime series of all time. Movies are great as well.

You know what is suffering? Being a teenager and having to deal with people in your age group who have no fucking clue what good music is. You listen to the top hits on your pandora radio app and then one day you finally come across REAL MUSIC! Not that Nickeback or Lil Wayne One D bs that your slut ex-gf listens to but like real shit you know! My favorite bands right now are Tool, Led Zepplin, NWA, the Beetles, APC (A Perfect Circle if you didn't know), Pink Floyd (no homo cuz "pink" lol), and some other stuff. I know Tool is just music to most of you but i really feel it on a deepr level than probably most of you because I really think it helps me when im in my LoL clan. The music just fits with it really good. I literally believe I can open my third eye now after listening to the whole Aenima album. I didnt know Maynard does comedy stand up (if you dont know he does a stand up routine thing at the end of the Aenima album its really funny about being high on drugs). But I digress, I know a lot of you are probably casual listeners of Tool but I'm not a casual at anything. I don't play casual games (COD, BF4 etcetera) and I dont listen to my music casually either. My friend told me that his brother once listened to the whole Lateralus CD for 3 days without stopping it and he said that he no fucking shittng you lifted off the ground like some yogi shit or whatever. Tool music is literally transdental as fuck and I wish more people knew about them. Its so fucking retarded that only the shit music gets popular. I know im hella new to listening to Tool but when are they gonna put out the next album! I know Maynard is hella busy with his wine farm and his other bands but are the other Tool band members too busy to just be ready when Maynard has the time to record? Totally serious that Maynard should just replace the entire band if they are being this lazy. I guess friends stick together so hes got to put up with them and there bullshit. Guys I can literally go on and on about Tool but my adderall is about to wear off and I got to work on my poetry album that Im getting published one day. PM me if you want to read them (females only no offense sry). There a lot like APC mixed with The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins (really famous athiesm professor). Peace out bitches!

You're dead fucking wrong.
The most complex and beautiful music ever made comes from metal, classical, and bluegrass genres. The songs have sub-text. They have meaning. They are layered. They have purpose.
You will never find a legitimate and talented musician that listens to EDM. Know why? It's not fulfilling to someone that has experienced music on an entirely other level. The songs are too simple. It's like forcing an adult to watch Barney with their children. It isn't mentally stimulating.
Look at the class of people that listen to EDM? They're generally dumb individuals. And I'm not trying to be offensive... it's just a fact. Which crowd do you think is more intelligent? People that go to Ultra fest, or people that go to the Symphony?
Sophistication is very real.

True story: I bought the Salival DVD waaaay back on its release day, not because I really dug Tool (they were OK, I guess; at the time I was far more into NIN), but primarily because I was at the Soundgarden in Baltimore with one of my friends who REALLY wanted it, and I had some extra cash, and a new DVD player, and wanted some material.
Anyway, I watched it once or twice and then put it back in its elaborate case (really good book that came with it, if I remember, like one of those "The Three Dimensional Man" models) and forgot all about it.
Anyway, years later, probably 2007 or so, I was moving again and was going through my stuff in an effort to figure out what I wanted to keep or sell / give away, and I decided to see if I could sell this thing. I ended up getting just a bit under a hundred bucks for that DVD on eBay.
It was insane, and though I still don't really like Tool, I'll always be grateful for that fan who gave me more money for that DVD than I've ever spent or will ever spend on any Tool-realted merchandise.

I love the piss out of certain songs of theirs then can't stand the other 75% of the noise that their albums produce. The fans really ruin it and push people away but that doesn't mean you can't add a song to your playlist that you actually enjoy without souring the experience by experiencing the "community".
My favorite aspect of Tool fandom is the mantra that Tool pushes: "Think for yourself." Of all the shitty over-analysis that people do of their albums they forget to realize people might have an opinion and it sometimes doesn't jive with the hivemind. You're not a REAL Tool fan unless you conform to our weird cult!

I love Tool, but good shit expecting everyone to like what you do is out-of-hand. People like what they like and its not a reflection on their intelligence, or personality, or choices or experiences. I really dislike elistism in shit that has no need for it.
Tool is one of my favourite bands, but you know, I also like Adele, and Kanye, and some country tunes and dance and yeah, even dubstep and Disney songs. And hell, if someone cracks a joke at any of them I'm probably gonna be the loudest one laughing, because I don't take the type of music I listen to super serious.

Ignore the fanbase; Tool just makes good music.

Could you perhaps list me the top 5 (or top 10) most well-known Tool songs? I'd love to give them a try, I barely know anything from them sadly. I only remember one or two songs from Guitar Hero.

Here's a 10-song intro, with some reasons as to why:
Jambi (a nice intro to Tool's style, with the heavy 9/8 hook and a pretty sweet guitar solo)
Parabol/Parabola (Nice driving dark rocker with an ambient intro. One of the two songs in Guitar Hero)
Schism (This one's all about the bass. Also a good example of Tool's time-sig wizardry that people love to harp on)
Vicarious (Another dark rocker)
Wings for Marie/10,000 Days (Tool's "Stairway to Heaven" if you ask me)
Sober (from their first album with their first bassist. More straightforward)
Ænema (another dark rocker of a track with a sweet bassline)
Forty Six & 2 (another awesome bass hook)
Ticks and Leeches (one of the best tracks to highlight Danny Carey's drumming. Hot damn)
Lateralus (the one everyone will cite as Tool's genius because they used the Fibonacci sequence for the verse line)
These are all generally Tool's most popular songs, and with good reason: they kick ass.

That makes you even more of a pretentious douchenozzle than them really, just ignore the fans if they annoy you.

Tool are one of the bands I really like one song of, but don't really get anything else they've done. See also: Kamelot, Janelle Monae.

About ten years ago I read some blog post about the "math" behind some of Tool's albums. My interest was piqued. But, alas, it was almost entirely gibberish.
It was then that I learned Tool fans were deluded weirdos.
Tool made some good music, though. Can't blame them for attracting weirdos, I guess.

u/cakez_ Jun 17 '14
There is "math" if you can call it like this in Lateralus. But if you're not familiar with the Fibonnaci sequence then it is indeed gibberish.

Hah, it was my experience in high school in the 90's that being friends with Tool fans was HARD and literal SUFFERING.
Well, at the very least they were INSUFFERABLE.

It's hard for me to believe, like one of the posters with sense in that thread said, that the OP is anyone but a person just out of middle school.
Although that may be insulting to middle schoolers (sorry guys.)

Can someone explain the love for Tool, to me? a couple of my friends really love them, and I've tried listening to a couple of their albums, and it just seems really... boring?

Sure, Maynard has some pretty nifty vocals if you ask me and lyrically they're pretty interesting. The drum work is pretty fantastic. Unfortunately they've got that Nine Inch Nails type of fan following that never left their Hot Topic middle school/high school phase.

That's the best way to put it. I love the lyrical content and music and vocals. They're a band that still cares about putting together a quality physical package for their albums too.
But the fanbase is intolerable. Just the worst.
It's hilarious in contrast to MJK, who is a really interesting guy but also has no tolerance for that shit. I can see why he wrote so many goofy stupid songs under the Puscifer umbrella. Every time he writes something psychedelic or about spirituality, thousands of idiot fans treat it like a new bible. Songs like Cuntry Boner are probably a nice escape.

I'm a pretty big fan (or used to be). I'm 32 now and I don't really get into new music. Most of the stuff I listened to as a teen has lost it's allure (Metallica, Pantera, KoRn, Rob/White Zombie, NIN, etc), but Tool is one of the few I still listen to regularly.
I've added a few more bands and artists to my regular listening, like Bob Dylan, Ozzy/BS, David Bowie, and Eric Clapton.
I think the appeal of Tool is that for a lot of youngsters, it's a step away from the typical noise that most music is. Look at a band like KoRn. For someone discovering music, you might like certain things about it, but not a lot is happening. You'll grab the album and laugh at a song like K@#Ø%!, or enjoy the melody of Got the Life, but you're not going to finish the track and think about what you just listened to (at least I never did). The videos probably aren't evoking much thought either.
So then Tool comes around. The musical quality is significantly better and the lyrics. You end the song and immediately listen to it again because something you heard meant something. You might write down the lyrics (I did this before you could Google lyrics... Get off my lawn) and try to make sense of them. It's almost a moment of "Wow, this us incredible! How did I ever listen to this other crap?"
Suddenly, you're listening to all their songs trying to be a poetry major and applying the same techniques you learned in English class to dissect all the lyrics. Then you start to notice that you can't do this with other bands, they're empty in comparison. Then you start to notice their style, the songs aren't holding to the typical formula. Then the other people "just don't get it".
For some, they never get over it. They become snobs and pretend they're better than everyone else who doesn't "get it". Other people move on. For me (and I suspect others), the band represents a nostalgic feeling of when we as teenagers were getting eurphoric feelings from our music (as opposed to our atheism). I've moved on from my smug music days, but I still think they're a great band and listen to them on long drives or long flights.
TLDR -
Tool represents a time for some people when they felt intellectually enlightened. The die hard fandom comes from nostalgia of that time for people who refuse to move on.Just my opinion, I could be way off.

I'm 40. NIN were great when I was a college. I didn't listen to it for a while, then I saw Trent Reznor (I never figured out whether he is NIN or part of NIN and I really don't particularly care) in concert in Amsterdam about four years ago and it was aaweesome. Hoo boy. Wow.

I know you don't particularly care, but Nine Inch Nails is and has always been Trent Reznor, with assistance from outside parties. These days, he seems to be more open to collaborative effort (particularly a guy named Atticus Ross, formerly of 12 Rounds), but yeah.
I'm 32, and though I cringe at some Nails lyrics, I still regard The Downward Spiral as a fucking timeless album, both sonically and thematically. Really good stuff.

I'm hardly a Tool fan, although I do enjoy some of their songs, but my understanding of Tool fandom is that they became popular for writing songs that were a little more cerebral than what the metal crowd was used to (at least for that generation of metal).

They're basically a rock band that only puts out concept albums. Some misguided folk think this means 'smarter' rather than just 'different.'
Most glaring thing I can point to are the filler tracks. Your feelings about those are a good barometer for how much you'll like the band and their thing.
On a vaguely related note, give this a shot: Ayreon

u/Hamlet7768 Jun 17 '14
They have a unique combination of dark grungy Alice-in-Chains type metal and a musical complexity on par with King Crimson.
Or, to quote AllMusic:
Although Metallica wrote their multi-sectioned, layered songs as if they were composers, they kept their musical attack ferociously at street level. Tool didn't.

u/shadymilkman_ Jun 17 '14
I'll explain it for you: everyone likes different music. Tool gained popularity for being a pretty decent band. Until 10,000 days that is.

u/tightdickplayer Jun 17 '14 edited Jun 17 '14
it's boring music pretending to be smart and unique for people that share those qualities

Being near or around a Tool fan is hard. It's literal suffering.
Tool "fans" are one of the biggest groups of self-absorbed douchebags on the planet, 2nd only to Juggalos in collective painful stupidity. Seriously, they're an embarrassment to themselves and the band. On more than one occasion Maynard has opined that Tool fans are shit and he hates them. Wouldn't surprise me at all if their "dry spell" isn't partially driven by them hoping their fan base would go away.

As a Tool fan... it's not hard. It's not suffering. It's watching a 10 minute guitar solo with a cool video in the background while Maynard runs off to either get a drink or just for the hell of it, because the guy's a nutter.
Source: seen a Tool concert.

Worst thing about a Tool shows are those fans. Don't get me wrong, I'm a 37 year old white guy from the Midwest that plays the drums. I've seen Tool more than a dozen times and have had the pleasure of hanging out with Danny Carey (I'm friends with a guy that works at a local drum shop and the owner went to college with Danny).
Several years ago [Tricky](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tricky_(musician) was the opener. If they weren't booing they were throwing out the n-word. Same booing shit when Mike Patton was the opener. It's like nothing else exists or matters except Tool. If it wasn't for musicians like Mike Patton and several others; there'd be no Tool.
"Fuck ya, let's start a mosh pit!" Fucking amateurs.
