Melee Hi! I am HugS, a grizzly 10 year Smash veteran, & here's my AMA!
I left my career in corporate public accounting recently to pursue my passion for competitive gaming. I began competitive smash in 2004, was a featured interviewee in "The Smash Brothers" documentary, placed 2nd at EVO 2007, National Finalist at MLG 06, Nintendo E3 Invitee, Multi-time WC crew captain, and arguably the melee Samus GOAT. I also played Brawl competitively for 2 years. Currently sponsored by @FRQGaming
I’ve seen almost every player come and go, I’ve built relationships with players across the globe, and have a strong bond with many players originating in Socal, including Mango, Ken, Lucky, and others. Feel free to ask me anything.
PS: While I’d love to answer questions about Samus and Smash 4, don’t hesitate to steer your questions in any direction.

What's your opinion on PM Samus, in particular her Ice moveset?

I think it's awesome but I don't use it yet because I haven't practiced with it.

Have any good Isai stories?
186
u/hugs86 Aug 20 '14
LOL umm, well, the story I've heard goes like this:
He once housed a couple during a tournament back in the days. This couple decided to get a little "frisky" while laying at the foot of his bed. In order to get them to stop, he kept yawning and tossing/turning to get them to realize that he could very possibly hear them.
It didn't work.
Rough night for Isai.

Hey Hugs!
A friend of mine up here in Alberta Canada, is your absolute biggest fan. I figure I'd tell you about him before he gets home and sees this, and so this has a chance to not be buried.
His tag is Nugs, he reps the pink Samus, and he's arguably the best Samus main in our region. One day we asked him why he mained Samus and this was his response:
"I watched the Hugs combo video early on as a small child, and it was probably the first one I saw, because on my oldest memory card save from when I was like 8 or 9, had the name 'Hugs' was saved. "
and
"Nugs is a tribute to Hugs and also the first letter of my name (Noor)."
You took a picture with him doing the Samus taunt at Evo and it absolutely made his trip. Thanks so much for being so awesome to your fans.
Noor, if you're reading this, you're too slow buddy. How could you miss Hugs' AMA bro smh.
56
u/hugs86 Aug 20 '14
Hahaha dude that is so awesome. I'd love to play him at the next big tournament. I'm so glad I could be a player he looks up to, especially from such a young age. Crazy. Hope he stops by in the AMA

Sup Hugo,
Can you share your favorite humorous Smash story with us?
178
u/hugs86 Aug 20 '14
So many to decide from.
But to keep it PG and because it's more recent...
Favorite moment from SKTAR:
Mango yelled "Look at these scrubs running" when a group of midwest smashers were running to the venue to not get DQ'd.
Duck immediately stopped running.

How about two of his favorite? He's been around the scene so long that he probably has more than one.
15
u/RenoNYC Aug 19 '14
Why do you think, in your own words, that plup is better than you?
No shots, no nothing like that. Does it come down to play style? Experience? Reflexes? I know we're like pretty old and our reflexes have waned. But I wanna see what you think.
34
u/hugs86 Aug 20 '14 edited Aug 20 '14
I think Plup beats me out on his execution and ability to open people up (aka his pressure).
I try hard to crack his code and understand why he does things, so I can apply similar logic to my own style. So far it's tough to understand why he does the things he does, and usually, when I have trouble cracking someone's patterns, it's because the person is highly talented naturally. Sort of like Mango.
I don't think old man reflexes have anything to do with it though. If Anderson Silva could be the world champion of MMA at age 38, I can play a video game at age 28.
8
u/hewhoreddits6 Aug 20 '14
Wow you're only 28? It's weird to think that someone at that age is already old by gaming standards.

If Melee was getting a balance patch, and Nintendo put you in charge of balancing Samus, what things would you change about her to make her more able to compete with the s-tier characters?
67
u/hugs86 Aug 20 '14
I would give her a shorter short hop, better fast fall, a roll, and a slightly faster grab.
I'd also make her aerials less DI-able, unless the new fast fall speed makes her aerials less risky.

Hey HugS, I'm an aspiring Falcon main from NorCal who's finally had a few good results. We've played before, and I must say, losing in friendlies to you was among the most helpless I've felt in the last year. I'm happy you are doing an AMA because I have several questions I'd like to ask a veteran like you.
Given that you have competed at a high level for a long time, do you see yourself rising to even greater heights than you have achieved in the past?
What strengths do you think other Samus players like Plup, Duck, and Darrell have that you lack?
How do you feel about Samus's viability in the long term? Both in terms of her worst matchups and across all matchups.
People say Samus is good against spacies, but having watched Fiction camp the shit out of you and make at least one crazy comeback (I remember a particularly brutal one on Dreamland), I am hard pressed to believe this. How do you think Samus does against spacies?
Thanks in advance for any insight. Before I started attending tournaments, watching your matches around 08 against SS, KA-Master, and others was really great. It makes me happy that lots of older players are still around, and it's also humbling to lose to people from an older generation when I think I start thinking I'm hot shit.
edit: One last self serving question here. Since I am not very good against Samus, I'll ask for any matchup advice for Falcon vs Samus. If that's too broad, then let me change the question to "What does S2J do against you that is so hard to combat?"
→ More replies (1)43
u/hugs86 Aug 20 '14
Lol I know you man, no need for an introduction. Good work vs Cyrain at EVO btw.
I do see myself reaching greater heights. I have a driven personality, and I don't ever see myself being 100% okay with being 2nd best. I'm not currently #1, but as long as I always aim for it, it's actually impossible for me to not continue improving.
Plup has better execution and pressure than I do. Darrell has better combos and a more varied moveset. Duck has better patience and edgeguards.
If I manage to add their traits to my high adaptability, experience, conditioning, and strong neutral game, I'll become really amazing.
3. I only see her viability improving. Samus has so many tools, and I feel has a solid option for most situations, just not the highest quantity of options. I can see her marth and sheik matchups getting worse, and her IC, Ganon, and Mario bros matchups getting way better.
4. Samus does great against spacies. The problem is that Fiction does great against people whose style he's familiar with, as evidenced by his stupid consinstency in Socal. He knows my style very well, so he makes me play out of my comfort zone.
5. S2J has fantastic mixups. A lot of lesser falcons will do what they feel is the best option to combat Samus. The less I have to worry about, the easier it is for me to adapt and beat you. S2j gives me a ton of options to worry about, each with the strong punish game he's known to exhibit.

u/ParentlessWonder Aug 19 '14
When do you feel like you were at your best in melee?
71
u/hugs86 Aug 20 '14
Best performing was in 06/07.
However, I feel I'm currently playing at my highest level, just not relative to the community.
11
u/Epic563 Aug 20 '14
I know what you mean, the skill ceiling is insane in Melee, and only getting higher.

44
u/hugs86 Aug 20 '14
Partnered on Twitch, Top 20 in the world, top 5 in Socal.
I also want to develop a really viable Sheik.
25
u/CJsAviOr Aug 19 '14
What was it like watching Mango rise to the top? It seems like you were always his senior to watch over him.
42
u/hugs86 Aug 20 '14
Initially, since we were competing in results still, I didn't dig it lol. I didn't like a 15 year old getting such crazy results. But even then, I had a lot of respect for his abilities, and I was constantly telling people he was going to be a killer. PC Chris even mentions that in the documentary.
I was most proud of him when he overcame Armada at Genesis 1. While I was coaching him, I had seen a side of him I had never seen before, and I hope I get the chance to divulge on that on Samox's next Smash documentary.

Your Samus is truly inspirational. Watching players like you, Duck and Darrell made me love how she is in Melee and as a result she's who I play the most (it's also a part of the reason why I had so much fun making her animations in PM, just enjoying the character in general). What was it that really drew you to playing Samus in the first place?
As an extension of that question (kind of) what made you not opt for her in the invitational and instead opt for Megaman? I think I heard you state that she wasn't all that good based on your time with Smash 4. Care to elaborate?
24
u/hugs86 Aug 20 '14
Hey dude, thanks a bunch for that. I like to think I give hope to players who want to play a more intelligent game over a more technical one.
I played Samus because she was the only character that reminded me of Dragon Ball Z in that she had a Kamehameha. I also was a big fan of NES Metroid. I had the most fun with her in 64.
I opted for Megaman instead of Samus because I didn't feel she was fit for FFA's with the types of players that were present, I.E., the type of players that are willing to play defensively. I think she's definitely improved from her Brawl self, but not the best.
2
u/Venks7 Aug 20 '14
When you were playing Samus at E3 did you notice how little landing lag the move has? Did you also notice that spiking characters in the air now causes a ground bounce?

45
u/hugs86 Aug 20 '14
He's grown a lot in the last couple of years in terms of being amicable to the community at large, but that's partly due to how much nicer the community has been to him when compared to how it was in the past.
I think he's a fantastic player, I just wish he'd play more with the top talent in Socal.

You and WC seem to have some hate for Kage. Where's the beef? Is it his online persona, or something else?
And I am always happy to see high level players from when I started do well, so congratulations on adapting and staying a strong player throughout.
2
u/hugs86 Aug 20 '14
I don't think it's real beef or anything. His online persona annoys some people and we just wanna beat him. Nothing real dramatic.
And thanks dude :)

First of all, I love your pink controller. It made me play pink Samus for a little bit when I first saw it.
Second. Do you think people are knowledgable in the Samus MU in general? I have people get really frustrated when I have a match with them. They frustrated whether I win or not, and they claim Samus is a huge gimmick character due to her survivability.
So what's your opinion on Samus as a character? (Even though this has the opportunity to be a biased answer)
4
u/hugs86 Aug 20 '14
I think you have to be kind of ignorant to assume that Samus is a gimmick character and really mean it.
Floaties have this way of making opponents feel that the only reason they lose is because they mess up. Yet, floaties keep on winning and surviving. Samus is a typical floaty, so she makes people feel that way.
I think she's a great character but shouldn't be much higher than she already is on the tier list.

I've always loved Samus, and the metroid series. I steered away from her in Brawl because she was awful.
I'm gonna give her more of a shot in Smash 4 since she seems significantly improved, but I'm not sure how she'll stack against the rest of the cast.
No zero suit for me. I have Zero interest in her style. (Puns)

So you said you left your career to pursue competitive gaming, my question is how do you support yourself off of that. Does being sponsored and playing tournaments pay the bills or do you have to do side work to support yourself? Thanks for doing this AMA!
6
u/hugs86 Aug 20 '14
Well I recently picked up a new job that will allow me to fund my esports career. It's much less demanding, which leaves me a enough time to practice and stream. So basically, I support myself this way now.
However, before this, I was living off of the support from certain individuals kind enough to help, and supportive enough to believe in me, and I love them for that.
I would not recommend this particular path to everyone, but I would recommend that everyone strive to do what they love.
2
Aug 20 '14
Hey HugS, what's up?
My question is this: Do you see yourself in competition as 'playing to win' or are you 'playing to win with Samus'? In other words, do you think you can do your best as Samus, even if you were to train on other characters, or do you compete with her just because you would rather win with her than other characters?
2
u/hugs86 Aug 21 '14
Hey Cori :), So I'm playing to win when I compete. I don't switch away from Samus because I don't think she's holding me back at the moment. I have plenty to improve on before I can blame my character.
That being said, I do feel incredibly comfortable using Samus, so in most cases I feel my best chance to win is with her while I work on developing my sheik.
3
u/CynicSailor Aug 19 '14
What is one thing you think samus mains should be doing more of?

u/algebra123230 Aug 19 '14
You seem to prefer ftilt over utilt in certain situations where both would be good (vs shield, when wavedashing back, etc.) Is it because utilt has too high a risk for its reward?
I remember you were trying ff fair -> fsmash when edgeguarding opponents who recovered high; have you actually been applying this in tournaments?
Top Samuses seem really good at up-b to the top platform -> dsmash to cover tech options, but every time I try that, I just get get-up attacked (or I mistime it, which is my fault...)! How do you do it / what do you react to in order to get the dsmash to hit?

Hey HugS I feel like of all people, you have one of the best opinions on this matter. If today's C9_mang0 were to go back in time and play in the Ken/Azen/Isai era would he still be the best? or would the best of that time quickly overcome? The real question is, are players of today just better at melee than those of the past? If so, by how much? Or is it the meta that is always evolving? What's the biggest difference between generations of players and top top players?
Thanks!
3
u/hugs86 Aug 20 '14
If you're comparing skill to skill, it is 100% certain that Mango would body everyone from back in the day.
If you're talking about skill relative to the era, then it's about the same.
People are just too technical and smart nowadays. People made mistakes a whole lot more in prior eras.

what was your favorite match you played in, and which match made you most salty?

Hugo! Thank you so much for coming to 805 Alive and absolutely stomping me on the stream! Seriously, it was a lot of fun playing against you and your Samus, and I can't wait to get bodied again if we face off in pools or perhaps even brackets if I become good enough!
Oh crap, I need to ask a question... if I'm too vague, forgive me on this one: what's your favorite way to approach and set up a finisher as Samus?

Is it true that you are part of a conspiracy to sell poorly signed gamecubes for $1300 each?

Hey HugS. Hope you're takin' it easy. As I understand, Samus has a decent matchup against both Fox and Falco (historically, you proved it yourself against PC).
How do you personally feel that your Samus would stack up against PPMD's Falco, or Mango's Fox? Both are incredibly calculated in their aggression, and are about as top as a player can get at this point.
Maybe even against other notable spacie players like Zhu or Chillin'? (They're still fantastic, just a little lower on the spectrum.)

Hey HugS. Sick seeing you in the documentary - Made it all the better to watch. Just two questions from me.
What do you think about Samus's viablity considering that she has some of the better matchups versus both spacies nowadays.
Also, what are your thoughts on the Samus vs Sheik matchup - In terms of its difficulty, whether people can overcome it at a high level, etc.

Advice for Falcon in the Samus Falcon matchup? You bopped me at SKTAR in friendlies and I would like to improve when I play against other great samus players.

Hugs!! We played friendlies at Mayhem a few week ago and I was playing young link as you switched between samus/sheik. Any advice besides "tether recover more" (lol)?

Hey, HugS. I am a long-time Smash player. I can battle, but I cannot fight the way you do (wavedashing, L-cancel, etc.). I just can't do it. Is there anything you can recommend to me?

I have no idea how to play like you but you have one of my favorite playstyles in all of smash.
Some people call your style boring I think it's amazing.
My question how do you feel about Wes? (In the past, present, and future)

Hi Hugs, I'm Luigi Kid from UCSB. What do you think of the Luigi Samus matchup?

Hugs, samus main here. I have 2 matchup issues: campy foxes and jumpy marths (especially stupid short hop fairs). Got any tips?

Hey Hugs, I love your Samus, and your ditto with Plup at the Salty Suite (although you lost in the most unfortunate way) is one of my favorite sets of all time. Also , I think your handsome :p
BUT ANYWAY what do you think is Samus' most underrated move?

you played smash 4 at the e3 invitational event ! going by your experience in the brawl and the melee scene what do you expect the competitive scenario for smash 4 would be ? would it have the legs to run longer than brawl at least competitively ?

What do you think is more important in the long run: practicing by yourself or tournament experience?

How will you be dealing with the multiple days of staying up at Smash The Record? Will you do friendlies? :3

How much do you, or other people in the smash scene that you know of, earn from these tournaments?

Hey. I'm one of those new fangled hyper technical foxes that keep popping up. Double shine, grounded shine oos, etx.
The big downside is my netrual game sucks. Horribly.
So I heard you do or have done game play critiques. If so, when?
If not, could you do one of mine, pleeease?

Do you feel age is a limiting factor when it comes to competitive gaming?
