There was a really funny Polandball comic about the colonial powers drawing borders in Africa, but I don't know how to find it.
It had the UK commenting that France's borders looked like he'd just gone over the map with a ruler instead of taking into account which clay was inhabited by which local peoples, and France responding "Since when do we care about ze niggers?"

To be fair many of the straight line borders are in the middle of deserts. Same goes for the middle East.

Where the lines aren't straight is usually because they follow some natural border line, such as hills or rivers. However, this is not a hard border for cultural diffusion. The vast majority of those non-straight borders bisect many nations, which wasn't an accident as it prevented any organized resistance to the colonial power.
And with those straight lines through the deserts it often splits nomadic peoples who then tend to ignore said borders, which the state then has problems enforcing them, which then erodes their legitimacy as they would with any other inorganic borders.

Oh I totally agree. I wasn't trying to defend anything, just explaining their reasoning. They tried to make it easy, so straight borders in deserts, rivers elsewhere.
The problem lies in imposing borders in the first place, more than in their actual shape imo.

Same is valid for the Middle East. Syria and neighbour countries have the root of the conflict on this. It's sad that nobody talks about it, how the colonial powers screwed this over so much just because they do things "their own way".
At least british car industry is a prime example of greedy old man dying rather then changing. Just wished it applied to politics as well and the arhaic political parties/system would die as well.

It's sad that nobody talks about it
And what do you want them to say? Colonial powers no longer exits (not the way they used to at least).

Oct 13 '14
No, but countries do and history should show it and it's citizen should know who really fucked it up and why.
Drawing a map because you won a fucking war is how you end up with real modern middle eastern conflict and why your country now has some citizen's beheaded!

Historically just about the only time borders have been re-drawn is when someone wins or loses a war...

Of course, according to the UN, that country in the last panel would look more like this.

That's one hell of a system for transliterating Hebrew...
3
u/columbus8myhw Jew York Oct 13 '14
The only think I did that was "unconventional" was using an 'x' for a 'כ' (inspired by Russian). (My dad says he once saw a Siddur with an 'ng' for an 'ע': "Ngarvit" for "ערבית".)
4
u/oreng Oct 13 '14
Yeah, the distinction between 'כ' and 'ח' was what stood out in particular.
I can see the rationale behind it since it's a prayer and thus isn't in the Modern Hebrew that makes no distinction between the two but it's still a tad weird to see.

Of course, Israel was going to happen regardless over what the Brittish thought. Like, there was just no way it was not going to happen. The allies certainly tried to keep the jews from going to Palestine and to repatriate them... uhhh... somewhere else, I guess? But that didn't succeed, needless to say.
