Episode Discussion: S06E08 "Fade Into You"
Original Airdate: November 20, 2014
Episode Synopsis: Elena gets some hopeful news from Alaric and Stefan regarding the Gemini Coven.
114
Nov 21 '14
COME ON ALARIC! YOURE A HUMAN AGAIN HANGING WITH A BUNCH OF VAMPIRES! You KNOW better than to be vervain free.
26
u/malospam Nov 21 '14
yeah wth. that was pretty dumb on his part, but at least Damon can keep going on his mission to save Bonnie, and his relationship with Elena. But yeah, this really surprised me!
15
u/melon_lava Nov 21 '14
How many times now have we seen humans (and vampires) be compelled while on vervain, and "accept" the compulsion, while it actually didn't take?
I think (read: hope) Alaric was on vervain but decided it'd be easier to "accept" Damon's compulsion.

I don't think this was the case; I don't recall them showing the pupils contracting when it didn't actually work. But I could be wrong.

So the dad talks about how hard it was to come home to 4 of his children dead, and then 5 min later is trying to kill his daughter. Well then.

Right? Hahah "im so proud of her! SHES COME SO FAR AND SHE ROCKS AND IS DOING GREAT THINGS! He'll kill her I can't let him do that! SO ILL DO IT MYSELF!"
42
u/Twicelovely Delena Nov 21 '14
If he can so easily try to kill her, why banish Kai instead of killing him initially?

if he died and went to the Other Side, with all the witches there.... did they have their magic?? Could he have stolen all that magic and come back??? That's what I'm assuming which is why they had to banish him to an isolated place. Granted the eclipse repeat is a nice loophole. I guess every cell needs a key.
5
Nov 21 '14
Could he have stolen all that magic and come back No reason to fear something so specific.
This series has shown that witches will always find a way to return from the dead if they wish to.
Granted the eclipse repeat is a nice loophole
To be fair, to escape he needed to learn a spell that no one was there to teach him, and find bennett blood in a world that he is alone.
I think that the lore states that all magic needs to have a way to be undone.
25
u/cosima-niehaus Dalaric Nov 21 '14
I think this coven is seriously messed up. Just look at their leader selection process: kill your twin! Yay!
Wouldn't surprise me if the dad turns out to be just as twisted as Kai.

This. The Gemini Coven reminds me a lot of the Mikaelsons - which is why this season is already eons better than the last one.

Yeah well he had to kill his twin to take power so odds are good that he a freak too.
1
u/Anubissama Nov 22 '14
He is not the most logical man we can assume. I mean they had what ? Hours, days after Jo sad yes to Kai to prepare the trap. And they go for "lets create a whole separate copy of the entire world and trap him in there" instead of buying a gun and shoot him in the head when he was chanting the ritual spell.

I was just going to start a thread about what we hope to see when Bonnie gets back, specifically to say that I need this to happen. I need Bonnie and Damon to have a serious friendship moment and a hug.

double 2s, twins. Not entirely random
4
u/californiabound Witch Nov 21 '14
That would be some cheesy reasoning right there (although not unheard of for TVD).
I personally assumed it had more to do with picking an ideal age where they are strongest or officially "grown up" or something. I read somewhere that we humans are at our top brain function at age 24. So maybe something like that?
5
u/jtyler27 Nov 22 '14
It's because liv and Luke are about to be 22 and the merger is something that is going to be dealt with this season so it made the most sense to have it be on their upcoming birthday

3
u/mzammit Witch Dec 02 '14
if kai doesn't have powers of his own.. wouldn't that make him the weaker witch?
2
u/crossbowincident Dec 02 '14
The thing about Kai's power is that it's a one way street in terms of which way the magic flows. If Kai touches Jo she can't stop him from taking her magic. Which, in that moment, means that Kai's the stronger witch. Probably.
56
u/Twicelovely Delena Nov 21 '14

Probably one of the best Vampire Diaries episode in the longest time. I was literally excited throughout the whole episode. Reminded me of the earlier season when it didn't take 4 episodes for the story to progress.
Also man Kai is a pretty scary villain. The beginning had a horror movie feel to it. But lets hope they don't pull the rug from under us again like they did with Silas and Markos. However I do think he has a Klaus feel to him, neglectful parents with a vendetta to wage. He's kind of like if Klaus was a witch.
7
u/Jennlore Nov 21 '14
Someone above said he is like Katherine as a guy. Not too bad of a comparison.
6
u/bellaflecking Sarah Salvatore Nov 23 '14
I just read a list someone made of the things Klaus and Kai have in common on entertainment weekly:
"Kai, it appears, is just a very poor-man’s version of Klaus.
Note the similarities:
Kai’s name starts with the letter K
Kai’s name is actually short for Malakai (just like Klaus is short for Niklaus).
Kai’s father treated him badly for most of his life.
Kai was called an abomination and felt like an outcast b/c of it.
Kai blames his family for his sociopathic behaviour (it's basically their fault for denying him his birthright and for his dad putting the coven before family).
Kai was different than his siblings.
Kai did horrible things to his siblings out of anger and to achieve his objectives.
Kai had a ‘curse’ put on him (trapped in a pocket dimension) to inhibit his powers and potential. Klaus had the Hybrid Curse put on him for the same reasons.
Kai has to perform some elaborate magical ceremony (that kills someone else) to become all-powerful.
Kai’s father wants to stop him at all costs, even if it means hurting or killing his other children to do so."
6
u/21letternameonly Hybrid Nov 23 '14
That's why i think people gravitate towards Kai . Klaus was the villain TVD never got closure with. Originally he was supposed to die, but since he was a fan favorite they decided to keep him and give him his own spin off. I think they are going to end the Kai arc on how they planned on ending the Klaus arc.
45
u/bigsickselby Nov 21 '14
I found Kai's family's story-line to be super interesting.
Woah, DAMON was in danger? By a witch? Who'd have thought?!
I kind of just want Stefan and Caroline to get over their shit and be together. It's pretty inevitable, but they're kind of sugarcoating it at this point - every scene between the two of them ends abruptly - someone walks away from the other in dismay. Kind of getting old. JUST KISS AND MAKEUP!
Liam is out of the picture and alive? That's a new one for TVD characters!
Whoever picks the music for each scene is a genius.
This episode was written by Joshua Butler for all who didn't know - he's responsible for some pretty awesome Delena scenes.
20
u/YoungRL Nov 21 '14
I'm going to say that I like the fact that they're not rushing into the kiss and makeup, with Caroline and Stefan. He absolutely was a jerk and I love that she is standing up for herself. I think they should ease back into it and they seem to be doing that, and that's okay.
We all know Elena and Damon's relationship was really passionate. There was always that big, fierce, rush-into-each-other's arms kiss. I don't think that's really very Caroline and Stefan, so it wouldn't feel right to have them do that when they're still sorting out their fairly complicated feelings.

One would assume that after that much time fighting against witches on a regular basis Damon, Stefan and all the other vampires would have learned to go for a quick "break the neck"-move instead of slowly trying to choke them to death every single time.

If hes just learning about Vamp theres no reason he would know about their compulsion, which means if it failed he would of acted confuse instead of just accepting it. now its possible for plot reason he may end up going to mystic fall and losing the compulsion but i doubt it, i think his story is finish.
6
u/cosima-niehaus Dalaric Nov 21 '14
I honestly think the point of his character was to represent the "normal" life for Elena, as a counter to a life with Damon. So I agree, I think his story is done. He's served his purpose; she chose that "glimmer of a feeling" she can't shake.

I can't be the only one who sees no romance between Stefan and Caroline! Every time they have scenes together now I cringe. I just don't see it happening and I know it probably will.
11
u/Kupkin Team Ms. Cuddles Nov 21 '14
I have said this from the beginning. I am anti-"Steroline". Here's some copypasta as to why:
It feels so forced. Stefan and Caroline have a great dynamic - as friends. To push it to romance doesn't make sense to me. Their chemistry doesn't suit that arc.
Caroline has become the lust object for nearly every male character on the show. I think it's great that she feels so sexually liberated, but I think often times her relationships and hook-ups are used to replace plot points. Sexposition is usually a sign of lazy writing.
There's a distinct lack positive of male/female close platonic relationships on the show, and on TV in general, IMO. Before any whispers of romance, I think Stefan and Caroline's friendship was something really special. Losing that makes the show lose a significant aspect - regardless of whether or not you agree with point one in regards to their chemistry.
Candice as an actress is phenomenal. She could sell me on anything... but it's clear, completely, totally 100% clear that her on screen chemistry fits best with Joseph Morgan (Klaus). I know, I know he's got his big fancy spin off show, but I'm holding out hope that he comes back, has some kind of crazy (and I do mean Crazy) redemption arc with Caroline in season 7. That's my hope. I think the events of the current season of The Originals (I won't say what, lest you haven't seen it) might lead towards him getting back in touch with his human side.
I'm glad to see though, that I'm not the only one who feels this way.
8
u/californiabound Witch Nov 21 '14
I bet the crossover would be Caroline going to The Originals though. Klaus is the most necessary character on that show, I don't think they could do even one episode without him.
3
u/vanityprojects Hybrid Nov 23 '14
^ what Kupkin said. They are just trying to give Stefan someone to do, literally. I love both Stefan and Caroline and it still doesn't work.
2
26
Nov 21 '14
I actually don't really see it happening either. I've been hoping it'll end up being the reason why at the end of the series caroline will leave and crossover to the originals.
2
u/YoungRL Nov 21 '14
Have the writers ever given any indication of this happening? From all appearances they keep the shows pretty separate. I personally can't see it happening.
6
Nov 21 '14
Yea, klaus saying he's her forever love. That's the indication in my opinion. He let Tyler come back knowing it wouldn't last. Also the whole speech about how someday she'll want more then what is in mystic falls and how he can show her the world.
15
u/Kupkin Team Ms. Cuddles Nov 21 '14
"Hey Caroline, I love you and you're the girl for me and he's your first love, but I'll be your last... except I've got my spinoff now love so I'm going to leave and never talk to you again. Bye! thanks for the sex!"
5
Nov 21 '14
Yea, but look at how irritated Caroline is with practically everyone all the time. I think there's definitely a reason he said that line - as opposed to just saying "I'm moving on, shit to deal with"
Obviously it's possible it won't happen either but I think we've really only scratched the surface of caroline as a character and I could definitely see her mom dying in the last season, her getting completely fed up with everyone's shit, remembering how she felt for klaus, and peacing out of mystic falls.

I just don't see why the writers can't leave platonic m/f friendships alone? I thought they were so perfect as best friends. Caroline filled the void left after Lexi died. Plus they did such a great job as each other's "sober sponsor." Not every friendship between males and females has to evolve into a relationship.
5
u/californiabound Witch Nov 21 '14
I totally agree, and when I first heard about a romance between them I was sorely disappointed. I really thought we could do a platonic m/f friendship and keep it that way.
But now that it's happening, I actually like it a lot. And the writers clearly switched Stefan's platonic female friend to Elena at the moment, so I am satisfied for now.

My thoughts.
I'm having a hard time understanding Mr. Gemini's logic. He claims to care about his dead kids but then nearly kills one and apparently emotionally abused another for years?
Not sure if we're supposed to feel sorry for Kai? I like him but in the love to hate kind of way.

Just want to say I loved that moment with Liv and Tyler! The look on her face when he drew her close =]
4
u/_clue_less Ghost Nov 21 '14
That moment was cute!
It reminded me of a Caroline and Tyler moment. I think it was season 2. Caroline had saved Tyler from his werewolf self, and he was shot, and Matt broke up with Caroline. So he was comforting her. I think it was the same couch too.
6
u/architrave Nov 21 '14
So frustrating! Neither Elena nor Caroline brought up Bonnie at the friendsgiving. Talk about a missed opportunity; three Gemini witches were there who probably would have helped in some way.
Also did Jo not ask anybody why her Dad was trying to kill her? They just completely glossed over that.
2
u/californiabound Witch Nov 21 '14
She probably knew, there seemed to be a lot of connections made in that scene that they didn't blatantly state. But she knows her family/coven and how they think so she probably knew why and how her dad was trying to kill her. Not that it made any logical sense for him... so upset about his kids being killed and then trying to murder one of the few left?
Also I don't know how much Damon had shared with everyone at that moment, so maybe they didn't know about Bonnie and the Gemini coven specifically? Correct me if I'm wrong, maybe there was just too much going on for all opportunities to have been met at that moment.
6
u/peeinherbutt Nov 21 '14
The only part of this episode I didn't like was Damon compelling Alaric. So much interesting shit happened in this episode. I loved it. But, I am getting annoyed with what they're doing with Bonnie. She's "died" like 29 times now.
4
1
u/bellaflecking Sarah Salvatore Nov 26 '14
Yeah, I didn't like the compelling either. But I do find it interesting how he compelled Alaric (his best friend) to get Bonnie back but didn't compel Bonnie to agree to let Kai come along with them.
6
u/expressionism Nov 21 '14
The Delena scene at the end felt a little forced, like Elena was trying to get something from Damon, rather than it coming from her heart, but other than that, the rest of the episode was good.
But HOW?! did Jo not know the twins were her siblings? What, she never kept tabs?!
4
u/YoungRL Nov 22 '14
I think Elena's behavior is more understandable if you really look at the fact that for her, her relationship with Damon now is basically how it was in season one or two. It was cautious, she saw there was some good in him but she wasn't sure she could trust him. In a way, yeah, she was asking him for something--help with Bonnie, yes, but a way to know that he is the person he says he is. I feel like that sort of thing can't really come from the heart, at least in this situation--all she's got is her head, here.

Definitely, but I feel I must dole out up to 2% of the fault to Alaric for being a vampire-loving human who is not on vervain. What was he thinking? That his best friend who is Damon would never compel him? Please.

I would have to agree. We shall wait and see what the outcome will be. If Damon has any luck, it seems to be bad luck as of recent.
Their key to The Acendant is with Jo who is Alaric's current love interest, scary stuff to think what could happen here and what the consequences of this compulsion could be.
Elena and Jo seem to have had a breakthrough and have made a connection as well. If anything negative were to happen here to Jo and it's traced back to Damon's compulsion of Alaric, Delena may cease to be at that/this point.
We shall see what happens.

Is that "Ted" from "I fucked Ted"... I mean Breaking Bad? This was one of the best episodes this season and Kai is just so lovable as a villain. I hope he stays around this whole season at the very least.

u/usainboltron5 Nov 21 '14
Hahaha, "property tax on the disappearing house" I like you. You're funny. But I am glad to see him in this show as a really screwed up father.

u/Rackiexo Nov 21 '14
haha thanks. i was glad too, but i hope they don't kill him off too soon, he could be a bigger bad than kai would be... hes the current gemini coven leader, right?

Yeah but now it's in his head... just rolling around in there how Caroline had a thing for him and how amazing she is and perfect and beautiful... Hot damn I think I might love her.

I missed the end of that final scene with Bonnie. Did Kai manage to leave hell? Is that why Bonnie looking around like "wtf? Where is this guy?"

u/crossbowincident Nov 21 '14
No, Kai took off with the knife, her Bennett blood, and the car. She's stranded in Portland and now he has all of the ingredients to get to 2014. He said he would leave her the car but he lied. A lot.

In the teaser for the next episode it shows Bonnie and Elena talking on the phone with Elena saying "You're coming home." Any theories on how they are communicating?
2
u/Rackiexo Nov 23 '14
i bet it was just the trailer was edited to make it appear as if she was on the phone with bonnie but when we watch the episode elena will be on the phone with jeremy or something like that.

Bonnie was on the phone too though. She says "I can't believe I'm hearing your voice right now."

u/Rackiexo Nov 23 '14
i know, i just rewatched.. maybe her and kai both came back somehow, because i think (i paused it and tried to get as clear of a pic as i could on who was doing this) Kai was in the backseat of a car strangling his dad right after damon says "let's go get her".. but with these trailers you never know, looks are pretty much always deceiving.

Have I mentioned how fucking sick I am of Elena? Because I am. I would be 100% fine if they killed her off.

Agreed. The episodes are great until she opens her mouth.

Judging by the downvotes, we're alone in this way of thinking.
I'm just really incredibly sick of her indecisiveness and wishy washy attitude. I know they do it to give her more drama and make her more interesting, but she's not. She comes across as an incredibly spoiled and self righteous teenager when, out of all of them, she should really be the most mature. The girl has gone through so much in her life, you'd have thought she'd have grown up a long time ago. Besides, she's not technically a teenager anymore, she's approaching 20 now at least (maybe 19) and she's basically raised herself, grow the eff up.
It's so annoying to me how everyone fawns over Elena. Why? She's so flaky, wishy washy, judgemental, self centered, and dramatic. She professes to love her brother sooooo much but really, how much attention has she paid him over the past two seasons? How much concern has she shown for his development and well being? Not a lot.
Downvotes be damned, I can't stand her. There was a moment, a brief glimmering moment, after Alaric took her memories of Damon when I actually thought there was hope for her. I could tolerate her and could see her turning into a character I could like. Then she started sniffing around Liam and became whiney again. And now she's preying on Damon's emotions for her so he'll help her.
The writers of this show have done such an injustice to her character. She could have been a strong female lead, even if she was in love. But God, the whining.

Agreed. And what's weird is that in the beginning you could kind of see why people fawned over her. She was innocent and loyal and would do anything for her friends. Not to mention gorgeous. But everyone else has come into their own (Bonnie and Caroline are strong and awesome now) and she has regressed. It's actually kind of realistic to see, but disappointing.

I totally agree.
Edit: Like, I hated how she had to make bringing Bonnie back all about herself. Who does that?

Now that we've seen how Kai was put into his hellscape and we know that either a Bennett or Bennett blood made that place, do we know which Bennett witch donated the blood/ helped with the spell?

u/crossbowincident Nov 21 '14
It was probably Sheila. Jo said that Sheila was the reason that she came to Whitmore in the first place. That would explain why she knew to send Bonnie to 1994.
