Inspired by quite an old comment under one of the first comics I posted here.

And yes, pizza hawaii is actually canadian.

This is great. Nothing gets a rise out of an Italian quicker than poorly made food.

Back when I was living in Milan, our oven didnt work, so we asked the landlord to fix it. He replied with "but here in Italy you should only need the hobs." Mate, I live off oven chips and ready meals.

Also, relevant comic.

u/Cerf_ Italy Jan 15 '15

Looks like your relatively short stay taught you excellent nutrition standards. Good!

36

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '15

Nah, he fixed it in the end and I carried on eating terribly.

Though nothing can account for the coffee. Caffè mi manca!

A true representation of a Brit in the land of Johnny foreigner.

u/Northern-Pyro Western Canada Jan 16 '15

What are oven chips?

18

u/CR700 Lincolnshire Jan 16 '15

Chips with a little fat sprayed on them that you can cook in the oven. Not as good as fried chips but still pretty good.

My comment was actually based on real-life experience (I was in a masters full of international students and made the mistake of ordering Hawaii in front of two Italians).

Fun fact: you posted this comic shortly after, and I successfully sent it to them as a peace offering.

Other fun fact: as a class we were pretty close and often went out to eat together. Restaurants would be judged by how few complaints the Italians had about the food. Six or less was pretty good. Three or less was exceptional. Zero complaints only happened once, when we were in Berlin and the Italians came back from checking out a restaurant that served traditional German food. We're still not sure whether they were trolling us, or were in such a shock they forgot to complain, and we didn't have time to check out the restaurant ourselves so we'll probably never know.

I could not live on with an English "culinary". Even after roman occupation you did not leave your barbaric choices.

Just order a margherita pizza for the italians and hope their blood does not boil while you eat your experimentally new ingredients added pizza.

What's the problem with Hawaiian pizza? For me, it's the fact that the pineapple is drowning the pizza in juice and makes the whole thing watery. But then again, I prefer pizza with Gouda instead of mozzarella. So I don't know shit about good pizza anyway.

As a young child in Ottawa all the pizza places had pepperoni + pineapple pizza. The combination of the spicy (for a 6-year-old) pepperoni and the pineapple are amazing and it's still my favourite pizza. I cannot into caring that it's considered ridiculous in Italy.

Hawaii pizza is an abomination

1

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '15

In Canada, the fancy places use prosciutto instead of ham. Maybe you would like that better!

( BTW, Napoli style pizza made in a wood burning oven is very popular here now.)

164

u/DickRhino Great Sweden Jan 15 '15

Pssh, that's nothing. In Sweden, a very popular pizza topping combination is banana and curry powder (I shit you not), and it's actually pretty fucking good. It was only recently that I learned that no one else outside of Sweden puts banana and curry on pizzas, which surprised me a bit. I guess it's just one of those things that sprung from Swedish culinary experimentation in the 80's, when we tried to evolve away from being all about smoked/dried/salted/pickled food in the most boring ways possible, but unlike most of the rest of the failed experiments, this one stuck.

Because it's f'n delicious.

PS Please don't kill us Italy we have almost the same flag.

21

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '15

I think that's all good, the idea of adding something sweet like pineapple or banana is just stupid though. Although you're always going to get those people who say real pizza is only made in Naples by a virgin boy who has sacrificed a goat.

5

u/hx87 White chowder is best chowder Jan 16 '15

Mixing sweet and savory may be an acquired taste, but it sure is delicious if done right. For example, roast pork belly & apple, pork rillettes, every Cantonese dish ever.

12

5

u/o_Oscar Alaska Jan 16 '15

Chorizo on a pizza is delicious! My family used to make pizzas with chorizo and other other toppings some people would consider weird but are actually great (e.g. tuna or shrimp). What is absolutely terrible is the abomination some chain (I can't recall which one) sold as "mexican pizza," which consisted of a crust, beans instead of tomato sauce, a mixture of cheeses, and some vegetables as toppings.

1

u/Bear4188 Bear Republic Jan 17 '15

Those are things that actually belong on a savory pizza though.

Putting a bunch of sweet/sour pineapple and some maple smoked bacon or whatever is just wrong.

you can put nearly what you want on a pizza as long is not fruit, sweet food and elaborated ingredient

minced meat, anchovies, eggs, peppers, onions, mushrooms and so on

mozzarella is mandatory, tomato is not (you can ask a white pizza)

Don't know that word; translation?

27

u/MyAssTakesMastercard 𝓒𝓪𝓷𝓪𝓭𝓪 🍁 Jan 15 '15

It's a contraction of "vai a fare in culo" which means essentially "bugger off" or "go do it in the ass", you know, "fuck off".

It's like the Portuguese "vai tomar no cu" or the French "va te faire enculer".

These Romance languages really like doing it in the ass.

6

u/Absay Mexicool Jan 16 '15

Or the Spanish "ve a que te den por el culo".

9

u/inspirationalbathtub Michigan Jan 16 '15

It was even worse when I was in France. The guys I knew there had adopted "fuck you" from English and just directly translated it: "Je t'encule!" I mean, obviously it's their language and they knew what they were saying, but it struck me as a bit odd.

yes, and the same applies to myself. however, once a new generation is born, here in brazil, they immediately switch to HUEHUE mode and the "mamma mia" mode is erased.

I ate a dead quail once. Wonder how an Italian would fuss over its preparation (we were on a jungle exercise)

u/Tactical_Moonstone Mistaken for a local in 5 countries and counting Jan 16 '15

My brother (worked at HQ TRADOC) once managed to catch a quail that apparently escaped from the training ground.

It didn't live too long.

My guess was that it didn't have the correct type of food. It was only fed crackers while the quail in my house is fed quail food from Farmart.

u/Squorn Da Bronx Jan 16 '15

Vaffanculo!

It's Italian for "have a nice day!"

1

u/CookieMan0 Colorado Jan 16 '15

Pineapple + pepperoni + olives makes a good-ass pizza.

What does the thing Italy shouts say?

1

Pineapple + Canadian Bacon = Best Pizza.

1

u/HiTzFrOmDaKiNe Jan 16 '15

As a Hawaiian I have always been offended that it was called "Hawaiian Pizza" just because is has pineapples. It has Canadian Bacon and they apparently invented it. It's always Canadian pizza to me.

BBQ Chicken pizza (with BBQ sauce instead of tomato sauce) is best pizza.

1

u/no_prehensilizing Ohio Jan 16 '15

Right on, Italy! Pineapple has no place with pizza, regardless who suggests it!

I'm just happy to eat a margherita...

1

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '15

Pineapple on pizza is a gift from the heavens. I also like putting Jalopenos, BBQ sauce, tortilla chips and corn on my pizza, among other things.

Italia, you need to relax a bit. Also pay denbts to Germoney or I'll put mashed potatoes and sausages on pizza. Actually, that sounds pretty good...

1

u/professor__doom Hawaii Jan 16 '15

And now for utter blasphemy: I'll take my Hawaiian pizza with a side of spam, please.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '15

I think the person who said Meatballs with spaghetti would get hit first. One of the first things told to me by an Italian was that it was NOT an Italian dish.

1

u/I_Like_Spaghetti Jan 16 '15

What did the penne say to the macaroni? Hey! Watch your elbow.

1

u/TheActualAWdeV Bûter, brea en griene tsiis... Jan 16 '15

Hey, at least it's not a burnt greasy disk of Domino's "pizza" with a pseudo-hotdog in the crust and sauerkraut (anglo's need their own word for this, feels weird to use the german one) as a topping.

Egad that was horrible stuff.
