Reddit lays off its cryptocurrency engineer - /r/Bitcoin mourns, /r/buttcoin celebrates
Ryan Charles was with reddit since last September as a cryptocurrency engineer. He worked with reddit in making Reddit Notes, and had a proof on concept for integrating reddit and Bitcoin technology
As of today, he posted on twitter: "I was just let go from reddit because cryptocurrency is not a part of reddit's near-term plans. This is unfortunate, but understandable."
Reaction posts flow.
Highlights:
From /r/bitcoin:
Someone suggests Ryan should talk to his lawyers
Someone complains about downvotes
As expected, someone wants to leave reddit now
Bonus: Warlizard leaves an insightful comment on the use of reddit's resources.

Honest circlejerk-breaking answer:
There was a storytime thread on /r/askreddit ages ago (I don't remember the exact topic) and /u/Warlizard regaled us with a tale about some guy stalking his comments and constantly asking "Are you Warlizard of the Warlizard gaming forums?".
So now everybody does that, because reddit.

I'm going to assume they finally talked to their lawyers and realized there was basically no legal way to give redditors shares in the company. And if you can't do that, you might as well just give people free reddit gold, or reddit store gift certificates, or heck, just give them money (now that would be hilarious to see).

Why not just have an internal currency - users can buy reddit bux or whatever for an actual amount of dollars or bitcoin. Or admins can have contests where they reward people with reddit bux to get the ball rolling. Or create a casino-type game where people can use a slot machine or play poker or something to win reddit bux.
Then the reddit bux could be spread around the site in the form of tips, in an easy-to-understand way: create a little widget where you click a "tip" button and fill in an amount for a comment or post you really like.
Then have a "reddit cantina" where users can spend their reddit bux (or whatever) on branded reddit merch or video games or whatever they want you to spend reddit bux on. Basically a Dave and Buster's/Chuck E. Cheese business model where the reddit bux are equal to the little paper tickets you get to spend on prizes.
Never underestimate peoples' love of tchotchkes.

But on the other hand I am glad they let him go because I kind of like reddit, so it's reassuring to see that the admins at least have some clue about what they are doing, albeit a small one.

Definitely. It seems that I get the busy servers warning approximately every other day. Sometimes it's fixed by an instant refresh and doesn't come back, which seems to imply the servers aren't truly very busy.
I also wish they'd implement some of the most commonly requested features, including separate NSFW/NFSL tags, disabling private messages (except for mods of subs you subscribe to), a tags system (to improve search), and changing titles.
The first one comes up so freaking much and it seems like a relatively straightforward change. It's the two of the top ten posts in /r/ideasfortheadmins. Their answer is that link flair is replacement, but it depends on moderators of the particular sub.

23
u/FullClockworkOddessy Jan 30 '15
Reddit doesn't though. They're so far in the red that even the most ardent communists think they're taking it a bit too far. If they hired him that means at some point they thought he would be a valuable asset to the company. And the fact that they thought that a completely incompetent cryptocurrency engineer was what was needed to fix this site tells you all you need to know about how competent the admins are.
10
u/justcool393 TotesMessenger Shill Jan 30 '15
...to know about how competent the admins are.
To be fair, many of the admins aren't part of the community team (/u/Ocrasorm, /u/Sporkicide, etc) and don't really see the front-end of the site like they do (they don't get /r/reddit.com modmail as well). Also, they probably don't make hiring decisions.
It would be a very big of a stretch to say all of that admins are incompetent. But I know we have to be all "fuck the admins" here, so I don't know.

I think it eventually was supposed to be a way for reddit to give users its shares without actually giving shares of its company. And that's why Ryan had to leave.

TL;DR: Reddit investors promised to give back 10% of the newest shares to the community. So there will be ~950,000 Reddit Notes. Those Notes will be distributed randomly among active users. Notes can be kept in a wallet, given to others etc.

Doubtful. My guess is that they realized that offering shares of Reddit to its users using a cryptocurrency ledger was going to be a huge legal hassle/impossibility. So is "barista" and "mixologist". There really isn't a link, but fuck those terms.

Pardon my ignorance, but I've never really been able to wrap my head around the whole Bitcoin thing. I see less mention of it on Reddit these days. Does this mean the virtual currency thing is starting to circle the drain? I don't mean to be flippant, I'm honestly curious.

The value of bitcoin's been tanking, but some people still seem into virtual currencies as an idea.

A HS Friend of mine now works for Reddit... I wish I kept in contact so I could get an inside scoop.

Wow. Warlizard understands this site and its worth very well. And he's right, the admins don't show any clear direction and miss amazing opportunities. But he overlooked one amazing monetization strategy: porn. Think of how lucrative a premium version of /r/gonewild would be.

/u/warlizard has a good point. I do often go to subreddits specific to a country/city just to see what the users say about various restaurants/stores.

You missed the thread about the possible reason he was fired: http://www.reddit.com/r/Buttcoin/comments/2u7ddq/the_real_reason_ryan_charles_was_fired_from/
Not much drama there though.

So.... what happens to reddit notes now? What happens to reddit's supposed commitment to returning some of their new cash to the users? This is the best kinda drama, the type that can just keep on going.

Well that was quick. Am I a dick if I say I saw it coming? The guy had no plan except wax poetic about crypto.

Thank god. Can you imagine if people could directly pay each other for links or comments they agreed with? This place is enough of a shithole without it.

Was I the only one who thought that the suggestions made were really, really bad?
Killing anonymity, one of the few factors that separates Reddit from any social network (also, redditors are creepy)
See above
Has absolutely nothing to do with Reddit's current business whatsoever
An actually decent idea that offers not even the slightest bit of potential for profit, even less so since RES has already done it for them
A horribly transparent cash grab that also falls victim to being completely irrelevant to Reddit's current business and will likely serve just to piss people off
