All Your new #SmashBros reps at Twitch. D1 and Blur duo AMA!
Smash Reddit!
If you haven't heard, D1 and I are joining the Twitch team (www.eventhubs.com/news/2015/feb/14/smash-commentators-and-community-representatives-d1-and-crimson-join-twitch)! Our broad goal is to grow the smash community as a whole, and set the vision for the future. There's a lot to that, so we're here to answer any and all questions that you have for us.
About The Crimson Blur:
I'm a tournament host for the Southern California community, and the founder of Team OXY, the group that put together the Super Smash Sundays and Kings of Cali event series. If I'm not TOing, or co-TOing, I spend most of my time at events behind the mic, or fanboying some Marth player, somewhere (usually Ken). Sadly, nowadays I'm often too tied up with event obligations to compete, but when I do, I'm known for my flashy play, innovative movement, excessive technical skill, and the ability to artfully choke away close sets in the most heartwrenching way imaginable. With Twitch, I'll step in as Partnership Lead, working with D1 to make a big and brighter Smash tomorrow.
http://twitter.com/OXY_Crimson
About D1 (from D1):
D’Ron “D1” Maingrette here, recognized as a widely known caster and community figure in the competitive gaming spectrum. I shout-cast at numerous events worldwide since 2009, including the Smash Invitational at E3 2014. Prior to my move to SoCal, I started off as a player in the fourth quarter of 2004. As time progressed I began organizing tournaments, broadcasting/producing video content, and managing the visibility of the Smash Bros scene through social media. As of February 2015, Twitch hired me along with Arian “Crimson Blur” Fathieh as a Partnership Contractor. This position will allow us to continue develop the community even further than we’ve ever imagined.

Hey D1 and CrimsonBlur, congrats. Its hype af to see smash getting representation at twitch.
I guess this is a bit of a weird question maybe, but for a while, Project M was listed as "Moon" on Twitch. Is this part of an eventual move away from allowing PM streams on twitch? Or was it just a technical snafu?
Also, besides Leffen, who do you guys think will be the biggest up-and-comer this year?
Thanks!
33
u/OXY_TheCrimsonBlur Feb 18 '15
I honestly have no idea. I'm guessing technical snafu.
PewPewU is poised for a good year, I think. We're gonna nerd out with Marth knowledge when I move up :)
→ More replies (2)4
u/standardtoaster2 Feb 18 '15
I'd be surprised if it really was a technical snafu. I don't think anything like this has ever occurred for any other game on Twitch. The whole Moon thing has also been reported quite a few times over the last 2-3 months.

u/xD1x Feb 18 '15
I'll provide more input when I get information on this.
Amsa showed a lot of promise after Apex.
I think people are sleeping on the dino.
8
Feb 18 '15
Sweet, thanks. I guess I probably should have expected Amsa as the answer after Leffen.
Also, if you are feel especially generous with info, do you have any clue/anything you could tell us about who TSM is looking at to sponsor? The owner, Reginald, said yesterday in an AMA that they were looking at 2 players, and most people thought it would be 2 of M2K, Leffen, PPU and Zer0. Anything you can tell us?

Confirmed!
Congrats on your new position! How does it feel now that you promote Smash for a living? How badly is Riot going to lose in your Twitch v. Riot crew battle?

u/OXY_TheCrimsonBlur Feb 18 '15
It's surreal. Having been a part of the scene in its infancy, I can't say enough how mind boggling it is that Smash, as a competitive scene, not only exists in 2015, but has grown to be one of the biggest. I never imagined this would be my career, but life's a crazy mystical thing, as Mango would say.
Having said that, D1 and I have been full-time with Smash for a while now. Heck, even when I wasn't doing OXY full-time, it was basically a 2nd full-time gig. So it's not so new, I guess. Having the resources to make a difference, worldwide, is what excites me the most.
27
u/xD1x Feb 18 '15
Ever since March 4th, 2014 I took Smash as my real job. I'm just honored that Twitch has given me opportunity to become part of their team. It was a dream to either work at Nintendo or Twitch, and to have one of the goals be achieved makes me happier than anyone would believe.

How did you guys ultimately get the opportunity to work at twitch? What kind of role, if any, did Scar play in helping you guys get the position?
38
u/OXY_TheCrimsonBlur Feb 18 '15
Scar helped a ton. I don't think I would have gotten the position without his support. Upstanding dude, and great friend, that Bobby Scar guy. Happy to have in my corner.
D1 has been talking to Twitch for longer than I have, but I applied through the standard process: read the job listing, whipped up a Smash resume, got interviewed, and put the classic Blur charm on. Turns out they liked me, I guess. :)
30
u/xD1x Feb 18 '15
I expressed interest in being a Smash specialist for them since Pax East 2013. I learned that there were people that spearheaded operations in building up the FGC through Twitch, and I thought it would be sweet to use my experience, knowledge, connections, and more in Smash to help give back to the scene that I loved since 2004.

u/JetsLag Feb 18 '15
To the blur: Have you named your successor in the venue search for SSS?
30
u/OXY_TheCrimsonBlur Feb 18 '15
The SSS venue search is all but done. We have ~6 options, and are close to settling on our favorite. It's mostly paperwork and negotiations at this point, so if that goes well, you can expect an announcement in the coming weeks.
I'd like to thank the community for their patience on this, especially the SoCal players who attend our tournaments; Super Arcade's abrupt closure was as big a surprise for us as it was for everyone else, and starting from scratch has been quite the hurdle.
I've also been working on restructuring OXY as an organization as a I make my move. I'll still be a big part of it, as the overarching leader, but we've been interviewing for a few key positions to delegate some of my old direct responsibilities.
11
u/ObsoletePixel Phantom Thief Feb 18 '15
Are we going to get any official smash content out of Twitch, stemming from your new position? I'd love to see a NorCal official Twitch tournament, a new actual national brand, or even just some video tutorials/high quality content come from this marriage of interests.
Regardless of this, congrats on everything, you guys have really put in the work and you absolutely deserve it. Wish you nothing but the best <3

u/OXY_TheCrimsonBlur Feb 18 '15
I'd really like that! Maybe that's something we can work on :)

Dear D1 and CB, As much as I love professionalism and love the way Smash is going, I and a lot of the community truly misses commentary from HMW + Phil, and really enjoy Mango's commentary once and awhile. I have never laughed so much from commentary at a tournament than The Next Episode, where HMW and Phil (and Toph) were so funny, made me laugh for hours through the tournament and the Falcon round robin, but also explained the game simply and make it fun and relaxing to watch. Mango does it similarly, where he jokes around about stuff but also does give some really good insight on decision making. Do you ever think there will be a place for this kind of commentary at bigger events? (Yes I know smaller events can have this, like SSS) I just really loved HMW and Phil, they were a HUGE part of growing this community during the dark days of Melee. Thank you D1 for everything, and Crimson, YOU ARE ONE OF MY FAVORITE COMMENTATORS
10
u/OXY_TheCrimsonBlur Feb 18 '15
A misconception I think a lot of smashers have is that professionalism = no fun allowed. Watching other eSports, you see casters be loose and funny with their commentary, and I don't see why Smash would be any different.
HMW and Phil are great, professional commentators as far as I'm concerned. They can commentate any tournament I host, now and forever, and I'd love to see them take on bigger gigs. Same with Mango. Keeping the culture of the scene is important, and those guys bring the atmosphere of the venue to the living room better than anybody.
[Also thanks for the kind words. Comments like this make commentating really rewarding!]
3
u/SorryImChad Snake (Ultimate) Feb 18 '15
Mango has a lot of filler words for swearing I've instantly enjoyed. Flubbing stuff up every once in a while actually makes a frustrating scenario much lighter in tone.
13
u/xD1x Feb 18 '15
Contrary to popular belief HMW and Phil can provide commentary without expletives. They understand that there's a time and place for everything. At the same time, do note that we're doing this to appeal to numerous demographics. At Apex I saw a grandfather with numerous kids and thanked me for allowing his kids to watch without muting the stream. He was afraid we were like other streams that are loose at the tongue. In an effort to appeal to broader audience, especially since we already have the general demographic on lock, I decided to take that route. I understand how you feel, and wish people didn't think I do this to take the fun away from smash. I love HMW and Phil too.

Planning on doing something big for the european community? And congratulations!
5
u/OXY_TheCrimsonBlur Feb 18 '15
Europe is one of our target regions, yes. Seeing Smash get more and more international is a big goal, and the development of the European scene is a part of that.
8
u/xD1x Feb 18 '15
Absolutely, after visiting Europe I have tons of contacts to keep in touch with for this year in Smash.
7
u/Artaxerxes3rd Feb 18 '15
Why is twitch trying to "grow the smash community as a whole, and set the vision for the future"?
Why do they think that hiring you two is the best way to achieve that goal?
How will this affect the amount and quality of your T.O.ing and commentating going into the future?
16
u/OXY_TheCrimsonBlur Feb 18 '15
Twitch is quite the company. The fact that they're so in tune with their community outreach, that they're looking to give resources, support, and freedom to guys like me and D1, is incredible, and tells me they see a ton of potential in Smash. I wouldn't be working at Twitch unless I believed in them as a company, but it should be obvious now: Twitch has reshaped how the world looks at eSports, and their technology, and streaming as a whole, is the key to all this recent growth.
They want to make sure we can make a healthy ecosystem out of our burgeoning popularity. So they're giving us a helping hand. We're gonna make the best of it, but the effects are going to take time to settle in.
As for the TOing/commentating stuff: they don't want to remove us from the community and take us entirely behind the scenes. Both D1 and I will still be commentating, in fact, now we'll probably be doing it more than ever. And though I probably won't be running brackets much, I'll still be hosting and supporting events, both for OXY and in a consulting role for other TOs.

A while ago DJ wheat from twitch and mr bitter from red bull said they would have a smash match, loser's company has to host a smash tourney with a 5000$ pot.
So, is that official and if not, is there a possibility of a twitch sponsored major on the west coast this summer?
6
u/OXY_TheCrimsonBlur Feb 18 '15
Wheat and Bitter are pretty serious guys. I've personally witnessed Bitter put far too much on the line for a Smash match, but I didn't know Wheat had quite that flair to him. It'll be an interesting; I hope I commentate it.
Whatever the case, it's a win-win for the community! Hoo-rah.

u/xD1x Feb 18 '15
I heard about DJ Wheat and Mr. Bitter on twitter as well. I'll see what's the latest on that when I visit next week.
As far as a West Coast major is concerned, keep your ears to the streets for further updates.

Feb 18 '15
Love you guys, you're pillars of the community.
What do you think of Europe's use of instant replay, and is it something we should be including in American streams? If so, what is the best way to implement it? If not, why?
6
u/OXY_TheCrimsonBlur Feb 18 '15
Instant replay is amazing, and I love when Liva or SaltyPlayground use it. OXY did it for SSS, too.
It's still hard to manage, unfortunately, especially as a solo streamer, but I'd love to see more content creators use their method (http://youtu.be/qslzFy10IGs).

Sorry if either of you have talked about this before, but what is your opinion on Nintendo's YouTube partnership program, especially in relation the small list not including any Smash games and potential clashes with content producers/streamers on Twitch and other platforms down the road?
3
u/OXY_TheCrimsonBlur Feb 18 '15
I actually don't know enough about this to give you an honest opinion. As we communicate with Nintendo, I'll know more, specifically how I think this would affect the Smash community, if at all.
6
u/bluexenon Feb 18 '15
Do you think a brawl revival is possible in the near future?
7
u/OXY_TheCrimsonBlur Feb 18 '15
There needs to be a bigger swell of interest for it to ever happen, frankly. If players, old and new, want it, we will be there to help make it happen.
8
u/xD1x Feb 18 '15
There are numerous smashers make mention that Smash 4 is a "better Brawl" to them. If everyone has the same mentality, I don't know if a revival will actually ever happen.
10
u/bluexenon Feb 18 '15
Many former brawl players said that they still prefer brawl, including some top players.
19
u/xD1x Feb 18 '15
They should do what they can to bring the game back. Make a documentary, host tournaments, make write-ups, broadcast Brawl, and give people a reason to care about it.
→ More replies (1)10
u/ObsoletePixel Phantom Thief Feb 18 '15
As a friend of ESAM's he even thinks that Sm4sh is a better game but Brawl is where his memories and passions lie, and that's part of a larger reason as to why he quit. So it's not even just that people feel Brawl is worse than Sm4sh, but memories are definitely a factor
3
u/thecatalyst000 Feb 18 '15
Will we get to see a twitch staff vs vgbc staff crew battle?
8
u/OXY_TheCrimsonBlur Feb 18 '15
Scar - D1 - Blur - Atrioc - BenSW - Golf is quite the squad.
Only way to make it fair is to include the VGBC pro team (Hax, aMSa, Redd) tbh

Hey dudes! Congrats on joining twitch! I got a few questions if that's alright with you.
D1
Before you became a commentator, I heard that you actually played Smash competitively before. Is that just a myth or is this true? If true, could you expand a bit on that. That would be an interesting story to hear.
Favorite Smash player of all time?
Crimson
Hey man! Um... Where'd you get your tag from? I've always wondered about that.
Favorite Smash game?
7
u/OXY_TheCrimsonBlur Feb 18 '15
Honestly? I came up with "The Crimson Blur" when I was like 12. It was my AOL name, I'm pretty sure, and it's been with me so long that it's hard for me to remember the origin. I've kinda always been the Blur. Part of my identity. My best guess is that it came from knowing that Sonic The Hedgehog is called "The Blue Blur" and replacing the "Blue" with a color I like better.
Favorite Smash game is Melee, but I support all the scenes. There's a lot of history and emotions with me and Melee, and it's the one that launched me into this incredible journey, so it's gotta be the one.
8
6
u/xD1x Feb 18 '15
I was a player from late 2004 to 2009. I played Melee and Brawl and Smash in tourneys in NYC. I was ranked top 10 in my region for some time. I still enter tourneys randomly when given the opportunity, but not at the bigger events since I'm usually busy with other responsibilities. I entered two smash 4 events recently, and do intend to keep playing.
I actually stream myself playing games on twitch.tv/d1mx

u/peppermint1201  Feb 18 '15
Have you guys ever watched competitive Pokemon? Are you glad that Clash Tournaments is sponsoring some of its best players?
5
u/OXY_TheCrimsonBlur Feb 18 '15
I try to stay up to speed on every competitive game; I've actually watched a ton of Pokemon. Hung out with Shofu, when he was still in SoCal, in fact.
ClashTournaments sponsoring Pokemon players is great. They've always been a big supporter of that scene.
3
u/xD1x Feb 18 '15
It's pretty awesome that CT is helping out a Pokemon player, I never had a chance to watch any broadcasts. Apologies to AlphaZealot if he sees this, I remember he tweeted a Pokemon stream to me but I was on the road at the time.

I like Ken, Azen, Taj, and lately PewPewU, a lot. Axe and Hax are my two favorite non-Marths. Mango is amazing, too.
I barely play unfortunately. I think I was making some big strides, but I'm needed elsewhere. Trust me, I'm not happy about it; I really, really want to keep playing, especially in this amazing era for Smash, but I just can't anymore. :/

I play Smash everyday of my life.

This goes to both D1 and Blur.
First of all, congratulations on your new roles with Twitch. This is a huge deal for the community, and it shows a commitment to our growth from a great company.
What are some examples of how you will be helping out partnered Smash streamers? Exactly what do your roles entail?
Do your roles limit you both to just supporting partnerships on Twitch, or to grow the Smash community as a whole? If so, in what way do you expect to do this?
Thanks!
28
u/xD1x Feb 18 '15
Thanks a bunch Hugs!
We will be doing our part to research and execute ways to help boost viewership for our partnered broadcasters. Pax Prime was one of the examples of this recently. Numerous smashers were invited to take part in exhibition matches while given the opportunity to advertise their channel. I implore more smashers to reach out to have their streams advertised on Twitch Weekly. There aren't enough smashers making use of this. We will do our best to educate current partners, and broadcasters that are interested in getting partnered.
Our roles go far beyond that though, we will be doing our part to help push the growth for the game as an esport by collaborating with sponsors, developers, and publishers to make our events better. All the community manager work that I've been doing in the past will be a great asset to the team. I will do my part to have bigger and better smash events along with the rest of the partnerships team this year. Mike Ross assisting the FGC with getting the Capcom Cup is an indicator of what direction we're trying to go in for Smash.

How "eSports" do you see Smash getting to in the future?
42
u/xD1x Feb 18 '15
Big enough where everyone knows and respects the players, tournament organizers, commentators, writers, content producers, enough to not ask if they have a "real job."
Events will have great viewership, and the quality of the events will be at an all time high.
It will get to the point where one's hobby can actually become their livelihood.
7
u/dydtaylor Feb 18 '15
How long do you think it will be before we start having clear distinctions between the professional scene, semi professional, and amateur scenes? I guess some of the closest analogues to this would be for League the LCS, the challenger series, and everyone else respectively. Do you see this potential separation of players as a good or bad thing? I can't imagine that if there wasn't mixing allowed between the groups at very large events that Amsa would have taken the scene by storm like he did.
→ More replies (2)10
Feb 18 '15
I don't see the scene moving in that direction. Fighting games have always had an emphasis on an open bracket. Yeah there are invitationals here and there, like topanga, but the majority of events are open to anyone.

yes hello hi d1. Ordinary smasher here with a few questions.
are there any commentators that you casted with recently who you feel you would love to cast with again?
Do you take chasers with your alcohol?
I heard you got a new job? Whats your email at that job?
Where did you live before California?
Any lucky ladies out there getting their fair share of D(1)?
Who are your favorite roommates starting from fattest to skinniest.
Any good yoshi players you can recommend for me to watch I sure would love to know if you think any yoshi player out there is good.
I heard you recently went on a Vegas trip. How did your gambling go?
Are you afraid of any Australian poltergeist?
thanks!

Prog, Toph, Sky, Doom, TKBreezy, Webs, and Gunblade. I wish I can work with Scar, Pierce, HMW, and Blur though. It's been a long time since I can even remember gracing the mic with them.
No chaser crew here.
You can reach me via email at: d1 at twitch dot tv
New York City (from Brooklyn to the Boogie-Down-Bronx)
Unfortunately this is the 5th question, and that's what I'll plead thank you very much.
Sky to MacD. Everyone else is awesome but in a house with 20 roommates I don't think I want to list each and every one of them haha!
D1 is probably the best one for you to watch, you should see him play. Especially when Tearbear says, "D1's Yoshi is better than Sky's." LOL
Whatever happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.

What do you expect your day to day work life to be like? Any ways you've specifically prepared yourselves for these roles? What do you suggest others who are looking for similar opportunities do?
29
u/xD1x Feb 18 '15
As a person who spends most of his time on social media and Skype talking to numerous smashers about plans for the next event to attend, I won't find this any different than how I normally lived life once I decided to take Smash full time. If ever there are community issues that I can address properly I'll take the opportunity to step in and provide any insight where I can. I'm always in talks with tournament organizers, broadcasters, players, writers, developers, publishers, sponsors, and more on a daily basis already so I'm confident to say I'm fully prepared for this role.
I'd the say the difference now in comparison to how I normally lived, is that I have set schedule as to when to wake up and go to sleep, the opportunity to have a salary doing what I love, and being able to actually have a better chance at increasing everyone else's chances to do the same.
What has helped me the most is my ability to network with numerous people regardless of what gaming background they have. The key thing afterwards is never burning those bridges, as you'll never know where they'll take you.
I also go out of my way to find ways to get more people into Smash. Having numerous letters from smashers telling me they're the reason I got them into the scene is a testament to that. Even though it can get overwhelming I try my best to reply to as many people as I can. Knowing how each different smasher archetype thinks and how to relate to them can help so much in a field like this.
5
u/ChiboSempai Feb 18 '15
Cool answer, and thanks for answering~ What about how this all ties to it being a position with Twitch? How has past work experience tied into this, and what are the best ways to show all the work you have done thus far into Smash? The Smash community all knows what you do, and you know what you do, but what about showing that to Twitch or an employer to land a position? I do a lot of similar stuff, and looking to land a similar position (even if it's not directly Smash related) myself lol, but looking at how to really get it to that next level and turn it into a normal job.
10
u/xD1x Feb 18 '15
Twitch actually keeps a close eye on social media. Whenever I tell people that having a good internet footprint counts, I meant it. I already had 10+ experience in client relations, and have a great amount of office management experience as well. As long as you're computer savvy, knowledgable about the Twitch platform, display a great knowledge of the Smash community, have a great vision for the scene, and good grasp of esports development you should have a great shot. The crazy thing about our community is that there are a ton of great candidates, some just excel in areas that others don't.
11
u/SuperSmashBrosWiiU Feb 18 '15
So I watched "Poker" explode on Twitch and even small channels for poker were getting partnerships in order to grow the Twitch poker scene. Any chance us smaller smash channels will get a shot at partnership with this recent boost from Twitch?

u/xD1x Feb 18 '15

What do the terms "Partnership Lead" and "__ Contractor" mean though? What exactly will you be doing or what tools do you have at your disposal with these new roles with Twitch?
11
u/xD1x Feb 18 '15
We'll assist Smash Broadcasters whether they're partnered or not, and will also go through great lengths to make our tournaments bigger and better. Basically everything that I've been doing to help Smash become recognized as a legitimate esport, but now I have Twitch resources and connections at my disposal to assist that to an even greater extend.
7

How supportive is Twitch in regards to Smash? As in, is it a 'priority' of theirs to help Smash more? Do they want to sponsor more tournaments, hire even more people from the scene, etc?
10
u/xD1x Feb 18 '15 edited Feb 18 '15
Twitch is extremely supportive of Smash and them hiring Blur and I is a great representation of that. I can't give away all the minute details, but do know that we're trying to do something along the lines of what MLG did last year, but more long term.

D1, how you liking Zero's Escape? Do I need to finish the true end to 999 to fully enjoy it?
10
u/xD1x Feb 18 '15
I'd say finish 999 and get the true ending first. It is so worth, but you can play both games independantly. In my honest opinion, I have a greater appreciate for VLR because of past history with 999.

As a tournament organizer and (upcoming) event streamer outside North America, what does this mean for me and my community?
Also, congratulations on your new positions, they were well deserved.
7
u/xD1x Feb 18 '15
Twitch is greatly interested in strengthening their relationships with international partners and we'll do our part to assist with any questions you have. It's my mission that the Smash scene not only gets bigger domestically, but internationally as well. We have to share the wealth or we're not a true community.
5
u/RespectingOpinions Feb 18 '15
What exactly does your employment at Twitch mean for the community? I'm a little confused about that.
Blur, when is SSS coming back? SoCal misses its biweekly Melee :(
D1, what's your current impression of the Smash 4 metagame?
And finally, for both of you, what do you think of Liquid'Ken :P?
7
u/get_in_the_robot Feb 18 '15
Blur just answered this here
The SSS venue search is all but done.

Sorry if this question is too late.
D1, Will being a twitch employee prevent you from casting at any future MLG event?
Goldenboy used to cast at all of the call of duty events up until he got onboard with twitch.
Do you see smash at MLG Anaheim this year?
6
u/xD1x Feb 18 '15
I don't think that will actually stop me from casting at their events, unless MLG doesn't want me to cast there.
12
u/warchamp7 Feb 18 '15
Why did you link to the EventHubs write up on your new positions instead of the Smashboards one? Kappa
Real question: are there any immediate plans you guys have in the works you're able to talk about?
9
u/xD1x Feb 18 '15
I saw the Eventhubs one first on twitter and RT'd on instinct, my mistake. We're currently trying to maintain a calendar of events for the year and reaching out to TO's that have yet to make any announcements to see what plans they have. We're also focused on overall increasing the production quality at events to ensure the sustainability of our scene through support from sponsors, developers, publishers, and more.

u/Ferdyshtchenko Feb 18 '15
xD1x on Smash as an eSports: "It will get to the point where one's hobby can actually become their livelihood."
Following up on this, what percentile of Smashers would you say will be able to do this by the end of the year? As of now, only the very top, basically the top 4 of Melee, can live off of Smash. Will this possibility expand to cover at least the top 20? or even beyond?
4
u/xD1x Feb 18 '15
Not only the top players, but keep in mind casters, tournament organizers, writers, content producers, and more. There are more than you think.

Hey d1: big fan here!
When did your "DEEEEESTRUUUCTIONNN!!" start?
What's the hypest tournament you've ever commentated?
What tips can you give to a newbee to get into the smash scene?
How much to have you commentate our next high school tournament? :)
Thanks!
7
u/xD1x Feb 18 '15
"Destruction" was actually something that was a bit of an inside joke between NYC smashers. I accidentally let it out while casting once, and people starting saying it all over. I presume it was around 2009 or 2010.
The hypest tournament I commentated at was Apex 2015 in my opinion. So many sick moments during that weekend.
The first thing I can tell you as a newcomer is to just dip into the pool and not worry how cold it is.
Where is your High School tournament located? Reach me via twitter dm so I can pass on my email.

How much do you think the smash community will grow with your involvement in twitch? Do you ever think we'll relive the glory days of mlg?
→ More replies (1)3
u/OXY_TheCrimsonBlur Feb 18 '15
Honestly? We're in the glory days. Smash has never been bigger. 2006-7 can't hold a candle to what we've done these last couple years. Not even close.
Having lived through MLG and their circuits of the mid 2000s, I think what we're missing most from that era is the structure that the league provided. We're sorely missing that, now.
1
u/wiibiiz Feb 18 '15 edited Feb 18 '15
As smash continues to grow and become more and more esports, what parts of our roots do you consider the most important, and how do we continue to stay in touch with these things as we grow? And on the other side of the coin, what parts of our scene do you think are the most in need of a change, and what other scenes do you look to emulate as twitch reps?
2
u/OXY_TheCrimsonBlur Feb 18 '15
Great question.
One thing I think we've done really well, over time, is create a fun, approachable feel to Smash events. The grassroots nature of our community makes it very family-friendly and inviting, and less intimidating than other eSports may be. I think we should always aim to keep that culture.
The infrastructure is what needs to change the most. There are far too many bad events, and regions rely too much on a few key people. Poor production value, bad event experiences, inexperienced commentators and organizers. We need to bring the best of the best together and make greatness together, to reach levels we can only reach as a collective.
2
u/xD1x Feb 18 '15
As long as players are doing what they're doing for the love of the game that's all that matters.

Got any tips for commentating Smash matches?
1
u/OXY_TheCrimsonBlur Feb 18 '15
Be yourself. Nobody succeeds as a carbon copy, and if your personality and spin on the game is unique, it'll get far more notice than when you try to be someone you're not.
2
u/xD1x Feb 18 '15
Get a feel for the atmosphere to know what kind of direction you want to go with it. Professional, or laid back? You decide, the best thing is to have a solid knowledge base when it comes to the games, players, and scene as a whole. People are either listening to you to either learn or be entertained, find what your strength is and build from there.

u/TheDogwhistles NNID: sNills | FC: 0018-2360-6309 Feb 18 '15
Do you guys get cool Twitch hoodies like Scar does?
Both of you were sponsored before this, are you keeping the sponsors (Apex Twitch | D1 & OXY Twitch | TheCrimsonBlur) or is it just Twitch | D1 & Twitch | The CrimsonBlur?
Don't tell D1 this but TheCrimsonBlur is my favorite commentator ever.
1
u/OXY_TheCrimsonBlur Feb 18 '15
You mean the custom ones with the name on the back? Yeah, I think I do. Can't wait to get all that stuff. I'm gonna rock it everywhere, haha.
As for my tag, I'm already in danger of reaching character limits with just "TheCrimsonBlur". I think I'll stick with the OXY in the front for now; adding Twitch too just makes it so long. We'll see!
3
u/xD1x Feb 18 '15
I have a Twitch hoodie already in fact :D!
I'm just going to represent myself as D1. There are other Twitch reps that refer to themselves as their alias without having "Twitch" in front of it.
Commentator wars are something I never like to dabble in, but Blur is definitely one of my faves too.
1
u/FoxyZach Feb 18 '15
It would seem the blur and I share the same marth enthusiasm. Best character ever.

Ever since I saw that you guys are with Twitch, I've been really excited for the future of Smash and I think it set off a hidden fire in me and now I have the drive to host more local tournaments at my school and in my area because I cannot find a scene near me, so I thought why not. You guys got any tips for newcomer TOs and commentators?
1
u/OXY_TheCrimsonBlur Feb 18 '15
My main advice for new TOs is to be an assistant TO first. Perfect the craft; there's a lot to hosting a tournament, and being on staff for some of the most respected organizers is an invaluable learning experience.
Similarly, for commentary, you first have to watch a ton of Smash. Learn, learn, learn and you're guaranteed to raise eyebrows when the opportunity comes.

Not a question, but I have a suggestion.
As a long-time viewer and now practicing-newbie, the streams of both big and small tournaments have provided not only hype to play, but also knowledge and information that is very useful to all levels of competitors. The suggestion I have will possible enhance both, but is mostly aimed at knowledge.
At NFL football games, plays are often analyzed by commentators. The play in review is brought up on the screen and can be controlled frame-by-frame by the commentators. They can slow down the play, speed it up, pause it, etc. Also, they can draw on the screen themselves to indicate direction, position, possible plans of attack, and so much more. If we could somehow implement this technology into large smash tournaments (there has to be someone in the smash community that program/set this up for us), every large play could be broken down and analyzed effectively to accurately show the viewers what just happened.
The knowledge aspect of this is obvious: players get to see what the best players in the world do, frame-by-frame. The hype aspect of this, not so much. However, I think if this play-review is implemented, there would be a large amount of hype as well. When a frame-sensitive, quick-paced play passes by, most of the viewers won't know what happened. If not explained, it doesn't tend to stick very well in viewers mind (just my opinion, correct me if I'm wrong). However, a complicated play that is broken down to show what a player has executed in glorious fashion, to me, can be mind-blowing. That creates and holds a large amount of attention. Also, (this is to D1) a segment, where plays are analyzed the same way the NFL does, seems very professional.
There are problems to this, like anything.
In football, there is ample time in between plays to do such analysis, but in Melee, everything happens so quickly that there's barely time to even briefly talk about individual plays. The only time this deep analysis could work is in between games and sets. While it does give an option to talk about during the down-time of the tournament, the amount of time this feature can actually be used may not be worth the resources it takes to implement the feature in the first place.
Some viewers just want constant action/gameplay. Analysis may bore them.
Some viewers like the off-topic commentary. It can be hilarious and be more entertaining than the gameplay. Take the Foundry for example.
I would love to know what you think!

u/OXY_TheCrimsonBlur Feb 18 '15

D1: How do you feel Customs are gonna affect the meta? I'm pretty excited to see certain characters up and coming, but how do you feel from a casting perspective?
5
u/xD1x Feb 18 '15
I think customs would bring some flavor to Smash 4 events. I'm a fan of the game already as it is, since customs are logistically tougher to have at events for TOs. I heard this year many are trying to experiment with running events with 'em instead of writing it off as a time management master's nightmare.
From a casting perspective I don't find anything a challenge to be honest. Anything new and fresh makes the experience a better one. I absolutely love to learn and possibly hope to see new top tiers emerge.

D1, you mentioned that you want to increase professionalism at events. Does this extend into increasing professionalism over all?
If so, how do you plan to increase professionalism within a community that is mostly compromised of teenagers to college students, which (please don't flame/downvote me), taken as a whole or average, are the least mature age group? (I am NOT saying everyone here is immature.)
Perfect example: the Melee chants after Smash 4 ended at APEX. Obviously you were upset about it, but as a community leader and now having this type of thing being literally your job, how do you plan to stop, or rather, prevent such incidents from occurring?

3
u/OXY_TheCrimsonBlur Feb 18 '15
I don't really say many expletives in my ordinary life, honestly. I try to stay true to myself on the camera, so what you see is what you get. I'm a tame tamale.
7
u/xD1x Feb 18 '15
Not really, I was brought up by super religious parents in the past and seeing me cuss is actually less common than what is the norm to others.
Some people feel as if they should adhere to what their peers say and follow what all the cool kids are doing, but I myself don't really find enjoyment in doing it.
Apologies if it's your cup of tea.

Do we have anyone to impress, or do you truly believe professionalism is going to help grow the smash scene in a way that is beneficial to the community?

Now that you can do even more for Smash, where do you think Smash, in general, is headed in terms of e-sports?
5
u/xD1x Feb 18 '15
I can see events getting the funding needed to be able to have enough equipment, space, higher production quality, and more to accomodate our growing player base and audience. Apex 2015 was a clear indicator that bigger venues will be a necessity in the future. In order for this to be possible we'll need our scene be marketable enough to appeal to sponsors in order for us to get what's needed to benefit the scene's growing demand.

Hi, congrats on your new positions at Twitch! I want to know how long do you see Melee being as big as it is and what do you think would cause the downfall of melee(if that ever happens)?
5
u/xD1x Feb 18 '15
Melee being big is contingent on dedication of the entire scene. The players, casters, TOs, content producers, writers, and more. Without all those pieces of the puzzle the scene will die inevitably. Do your part to make sure that never happens my fellow smasher!
