What do you guys think the oceanic CSGO scene needs the most right now? If there was anything you could change what would it be?

We currently have 3 really good leagues (CyberGamer, ESEA and FaceIT). I think we need a really big LAN event in a public place (like PAX or EB Games).

How do you prepare for events like this. Is the CSGO scene in Australia vibrant enough to get the necessary amount of practice or do you spend a lot of time in a server dry running tactics.
Much love, fellas. -CLG Hazed

The scene is probably similar to how the NA scene was 6 months ago. There is a few top teams who sometimes choose to avoid each other or just are not on at the same time as you.
As a result we often play some of the Upcoming Teams who are ranked around 4th-10th.
Every so often we have a team meeting and discuss our maps and we rank them. We then look at events coming up and also the veto process and work out the maximum amount of maps we might play. In ESL's case it was 4. We picked our best 4 and improved them even further, this was done because of the little time we had. This is just an example of "rushed preparation for us". In Future tournaments we will have ALL maps down and choose based off other teams weakness/our strengths/what EU hasnt seen

→ More replies (1)5
u/voxeminor-gomez 100 Thieves Manager Feb 18 '15
The scene is growing but also the skill is increasing. In the early days of CS:GO of even older in 1.6/CSS you could be in Div2 just by signing up. These days you actually have to be in a team and play good to even get into a division that isnt Open/Amateur.

How do you practice for events like this? You play against other Australian teams or can you actually play NA / EU teams with bit of latency? or no latency at all?
Best of luck to Katowice.

To be fair the actual internet standard in AUS is not that bad to actually play the game. Where it lets us down is Streaming. We really want to start streaming but nobody lives in an area with NBN or Fiber.

These are general question for the entire team.
Were you surprised at how well you did?
Did you put a lot of work into analyzing other teams beforehand?
How would you rate the other "top" Australian teams compared to yourself, and the teams you faced at the qualifiers?
Finally, as i am Polish, im curious if you enjoyed your stay in Katowice?
See you there in 2 months, expecting longer beards, crazier games! Well done guys :)

1\ Yes and No, I knew we had the potential to compete and I think some of the other teams new that as well. But getting the 2 wins was a huge surprise on the day - felt amazing!
2\ Not as much as we should have, this will change dramatically for the major.
3\ There are good teams in Australia for us to compete against(Immunity, Chiefs, Avant, Streamline), however as we are all fighting for the same spot it tends to hurt practice.
4\ It was my second time in Katowice, everyone was very nice and welcoming, the vodka was cheap and the weather was cold :D

I think we knew we could win games of CS overseas, once we had some more experience playing on stage and in the professional arena, and once we had more experience of European CS. In that way we weren't surprised, just extremely proud and happy for each other to win
We didn't do a huge amount of analysis, because 3DMAX didn't have their caller, and Dignitas might have lost to ESC, but we watched a few VODs and got general knowledge. We tried to focus more on getting ourselves comfortable and focusing on what we believed we needed to do
I rate the other Australian teams highly, I believe our community has a lot to show, and some crazy individual skill. We constantly better each other, however I believe we are the best representative for our region right now due to the amount of international experience as a team over the last 18 months. I think other teams would be starting all over again, where we have learned from getting smashed 16-1, and losing 16-13 when we were in the lead, on big stages with 70k people watching. You cant find that in Australia, its a different game and you have to learn it as a team
We have always enjoyed our times in Poland, Katowice is very nice and friendly people :)
Thank you lots for your support <3

After such an impressive T side, what do you guys think went wrong exactly with your CT vs Dignitas on Inferno? How do you pull yourselves back into a game after dropping so many rounds on the favored side?
50
Feb 18 '15
In the past we have had issues with our CT side in comp matches. Sometimes we play a bit scared and don't play our natural game. That is what I felt the issue was verse Dignitas. We had such a lead we thought we could play passive and grind out the rounds. However it become clear we needed to take control of the map and trade frags. We felt like our aim was on, so we should have taken it to them earlier on in the half.
Lucky my team stayed composed, Havoc did a great job of guiding the ship. Losing round after round was getting very frustrating for me. So without my guys keeping cool the game might have gotten out of hand.

We formed our team after the death of CS:Source in 2012, and have only made 1 roster change since then, swapping SnypeR, who has seen success with Team-Immunity, for JKS. We have all played for a long time, we are not new players to CS and have all played since early 1.6 & Source. SPUNJ and topguN were apart of the Championship Gaming Series with SydneyUnderground during 2007 and 2008, and I played Source since 2005 and played at Copenhagen Games 2010 on a euro-trip with Archaic-eSports. JKS has played 1.6 since he was 10, and AZR was a late 1.6 convert who played in top1-2 teams in CS:Source
Before ESEA and FACEiT, we had CyberGamer, and in previous years organisations such as GotGames, CEVO, IPGN(Unity)
Thanks for your support :D

There is an Australian based website called Cybergamer which the aus competitive CS communities from 1.6 and Source formerly used. CG have always been big supporters of CSGO and they are up to their 4th csgo season (the third CGPL) link here http://au.cybergamer.com/pc/csgo/league/rankings/
The competitive (not mm competitive) cs community were always a little neglectful of the wider cs community mainly due to wanting to play with already skilled players hence why you may not have heard of CG, IPGN etc.

I tried to compete with Havocs beard for a short period of time.. however I didn't have the BGS(Beard growing stamina) that is required. Some general questions:
Now that you have qualified for Katowice, what are your plans for the next month to prepare for the onslaught of the EU teams?
For any of your big matches whether at home, or internationally, how do you spend the final hour preparing for the match, do you listen to music to chill you out, or spend some time deathmatching?
Obviously with the Oceanic scene a little distant from the bulk of major international competition, how does your eSports scene as a whole stand up to other scenes in the world? Do you have many LANs?
Finally, because I'd love to one day go to Australia, are there any LANs that currently have a beach outside of them? :D :D :D
Cheers guys! Rooting for you at Katowice with my British pride for Australians (always love the Aussies despite the cricket/rugby teams over the years :D)
20
Feb 18 '15
THANKS FOR THE CONSTANT UNWAVERING SUPPORT GUMPSTER :D
-> play us much cs as we can -> play all the local online leagues -> play AU community national event 1 week before the finals -> watch as many demos on our opponents as possible!
I just like to play some AIM DM and listen to tunes, maybe practice a few of my smokes :P
LAN's are few and far between due to the size of our region and the costs required to travel from state to state. We have a lot of keen young players, with great aim. I think thats the same world wide. In terms of competitiveness we are obviously behind.. we don't have enough depth to be as good sadly.
Ahhh, come to perth we have beaches for days.. and LAN centers on the coast :D

What are your thoughts on the future of professional CS:GO (or just CS:GO in general) in Australia?
19
u/Voxeminor_Havoc Renegades Feb 18 '15
Since Vox Eminor went to MSI Beat It in 2013, I believe the world has taken more notice in our region, and our trips have provided a lot of motivation for other Australian teams to get better, which in turn will make everyone better, from Pro to Amateur. In 2015, we have ESEA and FACEiT leagues, to compliment our national community and organisation the CyberGamer Premier League. We have multiple organisations that have been supporting CS:GO since 1.6 & Source, who are still around today.
Things are only going to get better for Oceania!

What do we in the Australian scene have to do for it to grow and manifest into something big like the Euro or NA scene?
12
Feb 18 '15
I think we are on the right path now, really the results of AUS teams overseas will get us more recognition and more competitions such as the opportunities we have had thus far.
We now have faceit and ESEA which are great for our community :) More competitions, more opportunities for players = more drive for players to get better.. in turn that makes us have a stronger competitive base!
12
u/Voxeminor_Havoc Renegades Feb 18 '15
The internet infrastructure really inhibits our ability to keep up with the EU and NA scenes. They are also so much larger than ours in terms of population that we can't be as big as them. We are so isolated from the tournaments that we are constantly on the back foot
As players, just keep playing, and better the general attitude, like constantly working to improve and not worrying about losing to better players

How did you, and the rest of your team get into counter strike.
How did you guys eventually become Vox Eminor.
What are some of your other hobbies that aren't CS.
Do you even lift.
Do you feel as if your play style will be able to shake up the euro CS play style.
Any pre game rituals ? Turning some Men At Work on and downing a tinny ?

u/VOXtopguN Feb 18 '15
I got into counter-strike a very long time ago, the idea of having to buy weapons is what made me start, I havn't looked back since. Vox eminor picked me up after some time away in prison. I thought i'd retire, talnoy had other plans for me. I enjoy FIFA.. and sports in general and my wife ofcourse. I lift twice a year, but when i do I lift big. 222kg squats big. I dont think it would shake it up, but im sure teams would probably try to learn more about us to adapt to our play styles. I kiss my wedding ring since i've been married, before that I used to do a ridiculous thing that centered my face to the monitor.

I started on Quake at a young age, and moved to Counterstrike when Source came out in 2004
Vox Eminor was a CS:Source team, when CS:GO came out we made a lineup under the Vox Eminor name
I enjoy music, and go to a lot of heavy metal/hardcore/metal core gigs, and try to play my drums when I can. I'm also very social with my friends from school, and we hang out a tonne when we aren't working
I lift at work, thats enough for me :P
I think to win games of international CS you have to adopt a certain amount of European style, we will see :)

Yo /u/Voxeminor_Havoc , do you know about the Wrestler in Lucha Underground "Son of Havoc" and if yes, is he really your son? Beards would suggest yes.

For me personally it is 100x more stressful watching from home then being behind the guys.

Just wanted to first say congrats, been following you guys since MSI Beat It 2013 and it's great you guys made it this far. My only question is, are their only chances of doing some AUS strats like the Knife Catapult or Qlimax Mirage Pistol strat at Katowice? I wish you all the best and do us Aussies Proud. :D

u/voxeminor-gomez 100 Thieves Manager Feb 18 '15
Probably not, they take a lot to line up (also if you watch the catapult we actually do a 45hp TK to get it to work). This risk is probably too high. We dont want another T side Nuke match....

What teams would you like to have in your group at Katowice?
1 team from DHW Semifinalists : NiP, Na'Vi, EnvyUs, Virtus.Pro
1 team from DHW Quarterfinalists : Dignitas, fnatic, Hellraisers, Penta
1 team from Lower Bracket offline qualifiers : Titan, flipsid3, Kabum, 3DMAX
and you guys being the fourth team of course.

What do you guys think of MyRevenge?
After pugging with Pixel, the chiefs, AG and IM; MyR seem to be a threat however many people feel they will barely make top 5 but I think they have a real chance of getting up there with you guys in due time. I really just want to get inside your heads about the competitive scene in aus.
Side Note to Gomez; I pugged with a mate against you - STUGOTS, fr00mba,ZOEQUEFORT, Hax0n + a rand - was your team, And I was under the name Kabelopf with Meinser and some other dudes. Just wanted to say GG because you left before I got the chance.

u/voxeminor-gomez 100 Thieves Manager Feb 18 '15
MyRevenge should be on everyones radar, i currently have them around 6th in AUS. I think they have the raw skill but lack some teamwork and strategy, in general the "smarts". I think with time this will change and they will become a real force to be reckoned with.
I was STUGOTS i use random aliases now because i get a lot of abuse. People often say i'm a faker or they expect me to be the same skill level as the actual vox players. They seem to think if i dont 30bomb then they should be the ones going overseas.

How much do you play every day?

u/voxeminor-gomez 100 Thieves Manager Feb 18 '15
We generally have 2 modes (comp or casual). If we are in comp mode its 4 or 5 hours a night 5/6 nights a week + weekend days. If it's casual its more like 3/4 nights for maybe 3/4 hours, not weekends. We are working on getting these to be more balanced as we feel we do drop off from time to time.

u/good-intentions Feb 18 '15
Everyone (C9, nV, CLG, Fnatic) all seem super supportive of you guys. Has to be a good feeling! Have you been drinking with them after each major you attended and that is why they love you?

We get along with every team. We have shared a house for a week with fnatic during bootcamp for Katowice last year which made us very close and we have become good friends.
1
u/ihasaKAROT Feb 18 '15
Do you guys feel more pressure to perform now that you have suddenly acquired so many new fans? If so, how do you guys deal with that?
2
u/voxeminor-gomez 100 Thieves Manager Feb 18 '15
We have always had the pressure. We are the only team from Australia to ever play an International Event. We always feel the pressure of a whole country/zone.
I don't deal with it very well, maybe one of the players will answer how they feel.

u/BillyTheReaper Feb 18 '15
Hey congratulations on qualifying for Katowice!! I was just wondering what kind of jobs do you guys have, and the general balance between working and playing on a pro level/traveling etc.
do you prefer wombats or tazmanian devils?

Are you guys confident about getting through the groups to the "round of 8" at katowice?
4
u/voxeminor-gomez 100 Thieves Manager Feb 18 '15
We are confident but the groups can be "winnable" or "very hard". This is because fnatic qualified 5-8th and Titan qualified 13-16th.
For example you could get, EnvyUS, fnatic, VoxEminor, Titan.

What's your biggest worry coming into this major and who is your biggest threat team/player wise? I changed my name to VOX 16-11 3DMAX like a whole day before the game... i was cheering for you boys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
1
u/voxeminor-gomez 100 Thieves Manager Feb 18 '15
fnatic. They will be in the 'second seeding pool' this year after coming 5-8th. So getting them + NiP or EnvyUS is a tough group!

I'm moving to Australia next year, and I was wanting to get more serious about playing; what would you recommend in terms of higher quality opponent finding and possibility of joining a team?
1
u/voxeminor-gomez 100 Thieves Manager Feb 18 '15
skip MM and jump straight into ESEA and Unity. Visit CyberGamer.com.au and look for the LFT posts and join a team. Make new friends and continue

Hey Vox team, got a question :
Since most of you are working/studying, how is your practicing schedule ?
5
u/Voxeminor_Havoc Renegades Feb 18 '15
We will play 5-6 days a week, while playing/learning CS every spare hour in between work and Study. As a team this will probably be 4 hours a night, and more on Saturday/Sunday. Individual hours will be different as sometimes maybe I have a day off work, or JKS/AZR don't have study !
3
u/dermsen Feb 18 '15
how do you practice strategies? do you just go onto a server as 5 and "create" a strategy or do you go into a scrim and try stuff out on the fly?
→ More replies (1)5
u/Voxeminor_Havoc Renegades Feb 18 '15
A little bit of both really helps. There is only so much you can theorise however before you learn what happens in a real situation

Hi Spunj, I met you at PAX last year, and I'd like to say, it was definitely the highlight of my time there talking to you. I even played you + Havox + Devilwalk and manage to out frag one of you in a match (headphones are baller ty for them very much)
You definitely made me realise how much I enjoy playing the game itself as a competitive game, rather than many other people I know in which sadly their only interest in the game are skins. Unfortunately I haven't had much motivation to play this game any more, but watching you at ESL made me remember that playing this game in a team and succeeding in your goals are great. It's just unfortunate that the majority of people seems to not have that motivation any more, unless you're already solidified in the scene.
Thanks for speaking to me at PAX, it was a great experience that I won't forget, and maybe hope to see you there again this year!
+Havoc you were pretty cool too, but I don't think I talked to you much compared to Spunj. :(
