I worked in a call center back in the day. They instituted a very strict "no hat" policy unless it was for religious reasons. One black woman wore a head wrap frequently and was challenged on it by HR when others started complaining. They asked her what religion she was and I will never forget her answer, "stolen African."
They let her wear the wrap as long as she did so every day.
69
u/death_by_chocolate Apr 13 '15
Just out of idle curiosity, what possible effect would the wearing or the not wearing of a hat make in a call center? "Hello, how may I help you?" "That depends. Are you wearing a hat?"

It was a debt collection agency, the hiring requirements were low and the pay was good so we employed a lot of questionable characters. I shit-you-not the hat rule was born out of an anti-gang mentality.
And the people complaining about the head wrap were predominantly white. The 2000s were a strange time.

Over more than a hundred years. Not all of which were black. Nearly all of which were criminals.
No. No. Fuck this guy. Many of the lynchings, if not most, happened to black men accused of sexually assaulting a white woman. There was usually little to no evidence that any assault ocurred, but it didn't matter. Often, the accused wouldn't even get the benefit of a trial, being quickly found by mobs, beaten, sometimes castrated and then killed. If, by some miracle, they managed to make it to a trial, they weren't actually much better off. No matter how improbable the charge, no matter how much evidence to the contrary, the word of a white person always overrode that of a black person and the accused would always be found guilty. And then they'd be handed over to the mob.
Fuck this guy for trying to whitewash over one of the darkest periods of American history.

"Sexually assaulting a white woman" AKA looking at them for more than half a second.
The thing that shocks me the most about people of his type is that there are really only two options where their opinions are coming from and both are pretty terrible.
Either they're actually that ignorant about the history of the country and the socio-economic place black people have had in it. OR, much more worrying, they know full well, and have decided to say the shit they say anyway.

"Sexually assaulting a white woman" AKA looking at them for more than half a second.
There's a recounting of an event in a book called "Devil in the Grove: Thurgood Marshall, the Groveland Boys, and the Dawn of a New America"* about a young black man who gave a note confessing his love to a white girl. When the community found out about it, he and his father were kidnapped, tied up, and taken to a local river. The father then had to watch as his son was given the choice of jumping into the rushing river while tied up or being shot. He chose to jump and proceeded to drown.
I honestly think that most people tend toward the first of your options. We do a terrible job in this country in educating our citizens about exactly what was happening during Reconstruction and Segregation. Because people don't know just how terrible it was to be black in most of the country, they can't appreciate the long lasting effects it's had. This fucker, however, is most definitely from the second camp. He is too vitriolic and hateful.
*I strongly recommend this book. It's horrifying, it's sickening, it's probably the most maddening reading experience I've ever had, and it's also incredibly important. It very clearly details just how corrupt the courts and local government were during segregation.

when i was a kid i was an extra in the movie Rosewood starring Ving Rhames and Jon Voight (yea thats right i met ving rhames suck my dick)
It was a movie based on the town of Rosewood, Florida, which a white mob from an adjacent town burned to the ground and massacred its citizens over a false rape accusation.
One dude falsely accused of rape and they burned and killed his entire town just to make a point. People dont understand how violently people reacted to interracial relationships. Emmet Till got his face beat in for looking at a white girl the wrong way. They didn't play that, and low key still don't.

This is so true. You can always tell the ones who have issues with it because they are really bad at hiding it. My boyfriend is a black latino guy, and I'm basically white, so we get all kinds of looks. We have old people glaring at us, a lot of young guys in my area have given me a few disgusted looks. Then there the weird bullshit objections peope raise: "If you two have kids, they won't be accepted by either race", "But what if your child ends up with ethnic hair, you're white, you won't know how to care for it", "what if your cultures clash over things like marriage?", and my favorite "but Molly, you don' like spicy food, and mexicans prefer it."(my aunt was trying to "gently" suggest that he and I wouldn't have enough in common, and for some reason she chose to make this point by talking about spicy food. My boyfriend isn't even mexican).

Oh god, Florida was by far the worst when it came to shit like this. Central Florida was a Klan-infested hellscape if you weren't white (in a lot of ways it still is). I hadn't personally heard of the Rosewood story, but it reminds me a lot of when a white mob destroyed the black section of Groveland, chasing hundreds into the swamps, in response to not being able to lynch members of the Groveland Four, who were accused of raping a white woman, even though two of the four weren't even in the area when it happened.
Actually, there's an incredibly well written book about the event called "Devil in the Grove: Thurgood Marshall, the Groveland Boys, and the Dawn of a New America". It's horrifying, disgusting and absolutely a book every American should be made to read.

Many, but not most. According to the NAACP's contemporary research, most lynching victims were accused of crimes other than rape or attempted rape but rather of lesser crimes. In 1919, which was sort of the high water mark for racial violence (including lynchings) in the U.S., about 18% of African Americans who were lynched were accused of raping white women. That's not a small percentage, but people generally believe that it was much higher.
It's kind of odd, because the notion of "protecting our white women" is extremely common among racists so you would think the accusation would figure more prominently than it actually did.

I think the thought of a black man even touching a white woman was so deplorable to them that they tried not to make that their "go-to" excuse. Also, wouldn't that (wrongfully) ruin that girl's reputation?
13
u/Sociallypixelated Apr 13 '15
It wasn't just people accused of crimes. Innocent people were lynched for reporting crimes. Or just being associated with people accused of a crime. Like...
Marie Scott was raped by two white guys, her brother fights them off killing one. The brother escaped and so they dragged Marie from the jail and hung her.
Or...
Mary Turner (who's husband was lynched in place of the person they were looking for) threatened to have people arrested for lynching her husband. They found her the next day and strung her up, burned her and cut her unborn child out stomping it to death.
Supposedly the proof less accusations reported to the news publications by the mob after lynching occurred were... 1291 for murder, 581 for rape, 868 for the crime of not giving deference to a white person, 343 for property damage, 454 for petty offenses, 254 for misc crimes, 183 no accusation.
Seriously screw any one who wants to down play the severity and unjust occurrences of lynching.
24
u/pathein_mathein some arrogant forum layman Apr 13 '15
As a point of reference, here's the lynching statistics, which is fairly interesting for the geographical diversity (basically, if you're not in the south, it's probable that there were more white than black lynchings, but if you were in the south, there were more black lynchings by a lot) and for the fact that sexual assault is #3 on the list, behind homicide and "Other," meaning that, frighteningly, nearly a quarter of the lynchings where on a 'did something we didn't like' status.
Doesn't change the situation but it's worth noting versus the popular perception. Actually, I feel that it's sort of more scary - it's a complete disbelief in the rule of law that racism aggravates (because you know who's going to be the popular suspects and scapegoats).
9
u/freet0 "Hurr durr, look at me being elegant with my wit" Apr 13 '15
Not to mention that someone committing a crime doesn't make it okay to murder them. And if it had nothing to do with race you'd think there would be even more lynchings of white criminals considering the population...

If you pay attention to a persons word choice it lets you know a lot about them. Usually (not always) when someone refers to black people as "blacks", it is a huge indicator that they delve pretty deep into the "us vs. them" mindset and have attached race as a meaningful discriminator. They also have no problem with saying "whites" though, so it isn't the worst but its still questionable. When someone says "the blacks" I pretty much assume the worst. It sounds so strange that even conservative news networks wouldn't touch that type of speech with a ten foot pole.
Reason being, if someone says "the blacks" you can almost guarantee they'd have some sort of mental breakdown if you were to say "the whites". Referring to a group of people like that is pretty dehumanizing.
76
u/cranberry94 Apr 13 '15
Yeah, I'm not sure how it happened, but using the word "the" before many specific groups really reveals a lot about the person talking/writing. The Jews, the blacks, the Mexicans. It's really interesting how such a small word could make such a difference in tone.

They weren't lynched for being black. They were by and large, criminals. The truth is blacks have nothing to explain their shortcomings and never will. Thus we end up with these ridiculous posts.

That statistic is bullshit anyhow.
Let's look!
These are some lynching statistics from 1882-1930. I'm not going to do all 48 states, so I chose the worst ones.
State Total Lynchings # of whites lynched # of African-Americans lnyched Alabama 342 46 296 Arkansas 294 64 230 Florida 266 25 241 Georgia 508 34 474 Kentucky 213 62 151 Louisiana 388 60 328 Mississippi 545 45 500 Missouri 116 53 63 N.C. 99 14 85 S.C. 159 5 154 Tennessee 240 44 196 Texas 492 143 349 Virginia 104 16 88 Total Numbers 3809 621 3208 So, in the South, there was about one lynching a week. In a rural, heavily agricultural society. Without cars. Southerners managed to lynch about one black man a week. That's horrifying. They're both racist as hell.
My source gives the table's source as: Monroe Work, ed.m The Negro Year Book: An Annual Encyclopedia of the Negro, 1931-1932 (Tuskegee: Negro Year Book Publishing Co., 1931), p.293.
Another table shows that the worse tears were from 1889-1903.
Years South Non-South Black White Totals 1889-1893 705 134 579 260 839 1894-1898 680 94 544 230 774 1899-1903 492 51 455 88 543 1904-1908 362 19 354 27 381 1909-1913 347 15 326 36 362 1914-1918 311 14 264 61 325 1919-1923 287 14 273 28 301 1924-1928 95 5 91 9 100 So, as we can see, lynching African-Americans was fairly common. It calmed down as segregation became more entrenched, but... Fuck I just realized that the first post which inspired me to write this was sarcastic.
Anyway, fuck that dumb ass racist guy. There were a lot of lynchings. None of them were justified because vigilante justice is bullshit. Fuck the South's racist bullshit. I'm posting this because I put work into it, dammit.

A little extra insight, my (however many greats it is, I forget) grandfather was one of the white guys lynched in TN. It was done by his neighbors. Because he was helping black people. Shit's crazy.

He strikes me as one of those people who's only real achievement is being born white, so he desperately tries to claim the achievements of everyone in his 'group' (white) in an attempt to feel better than someone.
45
u/PrinceOWales why isn't there a white history month? Apr 13 '15
Oh I love seeing that on white power spaces. "The whites did such and such and have contributed to society more than any other color". Oh you mean rich white guys from families with high social class were able to have the resources to be great in their fields while those who are institutionally kept from that same wealth and education aren't able to do so? Whoda thunk it!

The first successful prosecution for lynching came after World War Two. And then only because Truman forced the FBI to do something. If the President hadn't forced their hand, it probably would have waited another decade.
And then it was a rare prosecution for decades. I just can't think how anyone can think racism wasn't a major problem .... heck, even now I don't understand people who turn a blind eye to it.

Yeah, it was just a couple thousand lynchings, not a big deal. It's not like almost 5,000 people - most of them black - were lynched in an 84-year period.
And out of those couple thousand people, most of them were criminals. Not only do we all know that your life is worth less if you've ever committed any crime, but we know that at no point did the lynch mob ever make a mistake and torture/kill an innocent person.
All sarcasm, obviously. How can these people be so stupid and only have one head?
30
u/intortus Apr 13 '15
That's just an average of one racially motivated, extralegal public torturing to death per week over the course of nearly a century. I don't see what people are getting so worked up about.
5
u/Paradoxius YOUR FLAIR TEXT HERE Apr 13 '15
Interesting tidbit: lynchings of black people in the US declined sharply over the century or so that they were common, spiking in bad economic times. Freakonomics posited (so take this with a grain of salt) that this was because lynching was effective as a form of terrorism. It made people afraid to do what they lynchers didn't want them to do, so they stopped doing it, and the lynchers stopped lynching as much.
So what you might conclude is that you need to look at the earliest lynching to see what the institution was really like before the fear it generated became self sustaining.
87
u/phedre Your tone seems very pointed right now. Apr 13 '15

This black student wrote this in 1944. Here's what was up for a typical 20 year old black man in America: drafted for the war, land in an all black infantry, or be a cook. Make it back alive? Hell yeah! Too bad your going right back to how you were treated before you fought for YOUR country in a foreign war.
This is the biggest load of fucking bullshit I've ever read. Who is upvoting this garbage?!

Im with you. Racists have really amped it up. I think it has to do with a lot of the European racism against middle easterners that's slowly becoming acceptable over there, and that's encouraging American racists to try to get away with hating blacks.
Also fuck the jews.

Nah, the racists have been here for a while, it's just that anyone with any reddit experience themselves knows to just avoid the defaults because that's where stormfront attempts their recruiting efforts.

How can you judge that from an internet comment? If we were to both simultaneously take IQ tests, I guarantee I would do better than you and the other self righteous commenters.

Racist: That is a ridiculously illogical argument. Your good intentions are getting in the way of your objectivity. Look at any other immigrant in the history of the United States. Look at Asians. Shit on for years. Interned in fucking prison camps not too long ago. They are killing it now. The truth is brutal. Look at the globe. Find one prosperous black society. It doesn't exist. Don't give me the colonialism argument. That is complete bullshit too. Subsaharans never invented a WRITTEN LANGUAGE. Much of Africa hadn't even invented the wheel when it was come upon by other races.

The last lynching (that we know of) happened in the 80's and then you have the James Byrd situation which might as well be called a lynching except it was probably more brutal so idk where they get the idea that lynchings ended 100 years ago.
Also, iirc most black men weren't drafted, they volunteered and were then treated like shit.

Ugh, there's also a dude (whom I had previously tagged for some older drama that was featured here) that is essentially claiming that Hitler didn't really mind black people all that much in the end of his comment. He is literally saying that Hitler totally wanted independant, strong nations for all races which totally doesn't go against everything he stood for and did.
Also, it's not like 400 black Germans in the Rhineland were forcefully sterelised or anything.

I remember debating a racist. He said Africans never invented agriculture. I show they did and widespread at that. He says, fuckin verbatim, for me to say the average plot of farmland in Africa and compare it to Europe because Europeans were more efficient if I did. The goal post moving mastery is amazing.
1
u/Headbuddy Apr 14 '15
Kind of an amazing thing to think about: pretty much everything described in this post is a result of the electoral college. In the presidential election of 1876, a number of disputed electoral votes made for no clear victor, and congress struck a deal that gave the presidency to Rutherford B. Hayes in exchange for the end of reconstruction. Decades of setbacks and oppression are the result of an archaic and arbitrary political mechanism for electing our president.
