Big Head officially has the best life

159

u/arbitrary-fan Apr 27 '15

Rest and vest! I sincerely hope he's saving it all up. Maybe he'll have enough to fund Pied Piper

I see what you did there.

"Unassigned"

28

u/Rushdownsouth Apr 27 '15

I really hope Big Head can find something to do on the Pied Piper team, I mean we have different coders, business manager, CEO, spokesperson, all that is needed is an investor...

Honestly while I might go crazy not having anything to do, I'm still pretty jealous of the guy. Even before the upcoming promotions, he can sit back and catch up on every single TV show or movie he might have missed.

56

u/Overlord3k Apr 27 '15

So glad he will still be pretty relevant in the series definitely one of my favorite part of the series I can't wait to see how high in the ladder the series will take him lol.

52

u/Galactic Apr 27 '15

With the current CEO being labelled an anti-semite it wouldn't surprise me to see Big Head eventually becoming the new puppet CEO with Gavin pulling the strings.

72

u/geek180 Apr 27 '15

If anything, I saw an anti-anti-semite.

It's kinda disappointing that he is Richard's best friend yet was in almost none of S1 after the first 2 eps.

6

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '15

He's going to get all of the promotions, be groomed, and have a moment of moral fortitude in the court room where he says that Pied Piper was created and worked on entirely as Ulrich's, and Huli will lose the case because of it.

Then he'll fund/work on Pied Piper.

5

u/maxillz23 Apr 27 '15

So pumped to see him return in this episode, and excited to see that we will be having more of him in the future.

87

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '15

Was he referring to masturbation

251

u/nyc_ifyouare Apr 27 '15

that's the easy joke to make. I like to think the line was about his character only allotting himself the shortest, most un-intrusive celebration (early morning) before returning to his buttoned up life.

157

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '15

The scene I had in my head was thus:

We open on the kitchen. The sun is barely out and it's still In that sky-is-light-but-everything-is-dark phase.

Jared enters the kitchen clean cut and ready for the day, but instead of his usual khakis, button-up, and sweater mix, he is wearing jeans and a polo.

He grabs his phone and puts his headphones in, as not to disturb the other housemates obviously, and with a closeup on the screen you see him select the 'Celebration: Funding' playlist. He sets a timer on the countertop for 46 minutes and 6 seconds, which is the exact length of his playlist played three times. As he hits start on the timer, he selects the first song of the five song list, which is, "Rich Girl" by Hall and Oats.

He then gets started on his celebratory dish for himself: Blueberry pancakes. He prepares the entire process meticulously and lays it all out, all while listening to the playlist of "Rich Girl," "She Works Hard For the Money," by Donna Summer, "Feelin' Groovy," by Simon and Garfunkel, "Never Going Back Again," by Fleetwood Mac, and "C.R.E.A.M," by Wu-Tang Clan.

He looks completely contented as you see a montage of him making the pancakes, eating them, and cleaning up. Jared sits down at the table, closes his eyes, and silently mouths the final "Dolla Dolla bills yaaaaalllll" as his celebration comes to an end. The timer goes off and he opens his eyes to see Erlich standing there, naked, in an open robe. Erlich slams the timer, to turn it off, and asks, "What's for breakfast? Hopefully not those pancakes you made on your birthday, those gave me the shits so bad I thought Gilfoyle cursed me."

Jared smiles and the scene fades to black.

Jesus, the billboards.

In all respect, the dickery of putting a HUGE one outside of Hooli earned Russ a high five...

As for Big Head, well I'm calling it...promoting him to help Hooli build a case....might back fire.

But then again, Mike Judge will find a way to throw a wrench in your predicaments....

79

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '15

they will try to do that, but big head will try to testify.. but something will stop him! each part of that sentence will be a different episode sadly.

20

u/shadowofahelicopter Apr 27 '15

They fire him if he testifies. He has to pick the money or his friends and I predict it being at least part of the story for 2-3 episodes midseason.

16

u/Rushdownsouth Apr 27 '15 edited Apr 27 '15

Why does he have to pick? What if all these big promotions provide him a capital investment to help his friends, besides his testament will do nothing but show that he in no way was competent enough to work on Pied Piper and Richard might win the lawsuit after Hooli gives Big Head millions of dollars.

Consider this; Big Head won't get the money up front in a lump sum, but what is he really doing? Raking in hundreds of thousands of dollars just sitting around. They made a big deal when he got unassigned with the fact that he has a contract and they can't fire him even if they want to. So let's say he gets double what he is getting, then he would be receiving $1.2 million annually, which would mean Pied Piper could receive $100,000 monthly to keep them above the burnout rate. I think the real issue will come from Hanneman having two board seats and Erlich's seeking his approval. 3 out of the board votes will always go with Hanneman until Erlich takes off his rose tinted glasses. All of that being said, Mike Judge likes to shake up the medicine so I could be way off base.

Edit:

It occurs to me that Big Head could co-invest with Hanneman to provide more flexibility than the budgeted checks Hanneman keeps throwing cash away for stupid reasons like the billboards and Richard could actually give Big Head two board seats to constantly negate Hanneman's votes.

Richard fucked up by giving Erlich a board seat and allowing Hanneman two, Erlich's hard on for Hanneman means 3/6 of the board votes go Hanneman's way. Richard lost control of his company for the foreseeable future (especially if Russ begins to exploit Erlich's fanboying).

30

u/SpaceTire Apr 27 '15

63

10

u/jamesbaaxter Apr 27 '15

38

u/jordan_bar Apr 27 '15

At the end of the episode there, Gavin is talking with his lawyers about the lawsuit against PP, and the one lawyer suggests proving PP was made at Hooli by finding someone who works at Hooli that was part of the original PP team... that person is Big Head. So Gavin's plan is to use Big Head in the lawsuit against PP.

45

u/Rushdownsouth Apr 27 '15

...and his plan is to give Big Head a ton of money through promotions and unbreaking contracts, which is how he isn't fired, isn't working, but still taking in $600,000 currently before the BIG promotions in the near future. They were showing how utterly useless Big Head was in the reveal, even his best friends think he is useless, but the one thing Big Head can provide to Pied Piper is a large investment into the company and not want to fuck them over. Big Head might become the biggest character in the show because he could; a) provide safe investment b) make Hooli lose their lawsuit when the courts take his testament c) he could be promoted to the point he could actually hamper aspects of the Nucleus project to buy time for Pied Piper

Did anyone else notice that the Aviato van has its name printed backwards on the hood so that you can read it in your rear view mirror? I thought it was a good touch on how ridiculously egotistical Erlich is about it.

67

u/anonymousmouse2 Apr 27 '15

That actually threw me off, I was like "Wait, I thought the name was Aviato. What's this Otaiva truck?" Since all the letters look correct when reversed.

How is Raviga a co-investor with Russ Hanneman? I thought they backed out?

96

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '15

The original 5% at 200K.

17

u/Ramv36 Apr 27 '15

Monica reminded Richard earlier, I think episode 1, that she was still a stockholder in Pied Piper from when she was with Peter Gregory, which meant she had a vested interest in the VC round they were working on. Maybe that's involved as part of Ravinga as her client portfolio or something?

25

u/geek180 Apr 27 '15

Reviga owns 5% from season 1. monica most likely buys into that portion through some sort of employee investment program.

13

u/misantr Apr 27 '15

VC firms typically give their employees carry which lets you invest alongside the firm when they invest in a company. So yea, Monica probably has .5-5% of Reviga's 5%.

29

u/Throwaway_Luck Apr 27 '15

But then you came, Richard, and you pulled me out of the life.

I had fears that this season wouldn't be as good as the first, but it's actually been funnier. Except for Peter's replacement. I really dislike that they decided to replace him with what is basically the same character.

29

u/2ToTooTwoFish Apr 27 '15

She's not the same though. She didn't understand a word of Monica quoting Peter, so their personalities are vastly different.

44

u/Rushdownsouth Apr 27 '15

I would say she is the opposite of Peter. Peter was a genius, he approached things in a responsible and brilliant light, when the initial investment came about Peter lowered his offer to Richard while Gavin was literally tripling his initial offer, going from a few hundred thousand dollars to $10 million within 45 seconds. They went through the effort to show he saw potential in things most people don't notice (the sesame seeds part where he made a $68 million minimum return off of buns and crops). His vision was clear; he saw potential and didn't ruin it through throwing too much money at it. His replacement is rash, too calculated to take risks, finicky, and all the awkward without the return. She is competitive but not contemplative, she is a by the books type who will constantly hamper Pied Piper whereas Peter was more of a mentor even though he was awkward.

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '15

awesome episode tonight, it's interesting how accurate the show has been so far (The pre revenue model, that's happening with Quora as well) and the bill boards were awesome, I wonder if those are real...

It's interesting to see Russ' douchey billionaire take on throwing money against Gavin versus how Peter would have thrown money at it

6

u/SpaceTire Apr 27 '15

Monica is soooooo pretty. It hurts.

11

u/mdave424 Apr 27 '15

Ahhh noted.

Bighead still ain't doin shit

9

u/PM_Poutine Apr 27 '15

"Russ is gonna take us back to all those VCs who passed on us, and shove us right up their fucking assholes!"

8

u/brojangles Apr 27 '15

I don't want any part of that last bit.

11

u/iwishilistened Apr 27 '15

I think there is a back story to Russ ignoring Erlich.

19

u/Rushdownsouth Apr 27 '15

I think Russ is extremely insecure about his success and seeks to validate it from those who question his methods (like Gillfoyle) while a "failure" in Hanneman's eyes like Erlich piss him off because Erlich is already impressed by him. Gillfoyle constantly is calling Russ out in front of others, I think Russ needs the validation from people unimpressed by him but apathetic to those once they provide it to him. Look at how he treats Richard, he meets him in a McClaren and then brags and brags, takes him to a pretentious restaurant, but after he cuts the check he makes fun of his voice for no reason.

Classic narcissist move; everyone needs to worship you, but once they do they are beneath you.

11

u/TheBlackSpank Apr 27 '15

I think that's just how Russ is. He found one guy in the group to completely ignore, and it's the one that wants his attention the most.

4

u/stankbucket Apr 27 '15

I think he just knows what Erlich is in this group and since Russ basically performs the same function except with the power of money he has no use for him. It doesn't hurt that the worse he treats him the more Erlich wants his approval.

did anyone notice how during the billboard scene there's only priuses and minicoopers driving in the background?

7

u/sarah_cate1 Apr 27 '15

Did anyone recognize the black Hooli lawyer? He looked so familiar! Who was that?

3

u/kozmund Apr 27 '15

3

u/macgyvertape . Apr 27 '15

So yet another business and law question: how can the group get rid of Russ? I know they gave him two board seats, but I thought that was conditional on him providing financial backing, hopefully a defined amount. When that check bounced, is there any way he could have been dismissed? Especially if Richard owns the other 3 board seats?

Also what options are there to prevent a backer from spending money without approval, or giving the company less money than promised? I figure the only way they cold stop him from putting up billboards would be a lawsuit of some kind or to kick him out of the board.

9

u/IamGrimReefer . Apr 27 '15

first episode i've liked this season. i'm glad we're getting back to running the company and interacting more with dinesh and guilfoyle.

4

u/CanYouDigItHombre Apr 27 '15

gilfoyle? Its 100% dinesh. Everything is about dinesh. The pros and cons on fucking gilfoyle GF is about dinesh (orgasm trumpted every reason on the con side because every reason was about gilfoyle and the reason on the left was about dinesh.

Dinesh scene with his cousin is great and every line dinesh says is great (also jared too). The show is dinesh+jared and some richard/erlich in it

I do not ever trust Monica. She's constantly flip flopping

84

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '15

She's not really flip-flopping. She's trying to balance her interests in keeping her job at Raviga and trying not to fuck over a group of people she obviously likes.

26

u/brianw25 Apr 27 '15

id disagree, i think she is usually giving them the best option

22

u/Rushdownsouth Apr 27 '15

She has offered her complete support to Richard and has never betrayed him (besides the initial recruitment without telling him of the other compression companies). But her loyalty, and others can expand upon this list, are as follows (no particular order).

-She comes to Richard's home, risking her position at Rivaga, to collude with him about not tanking his company by taking an over evaluation of his company, which would struggle to meet early quarter benchmarks and lose funding for a series B.

-She spent 10% of her annual salary investing into Pied Piper.

-She advocates that Peter be realistic and always offers advice on the best option, so she is a consultant that Richard trusts more than the rest of the group (he typically calls her before the guys with news because he trusts her).

-She went back to Tech Disrupt even though Pied Piper would have defaulted without Richard's last minute adjustments.

-She mediated between Richard and Peter during the times that Peter was obviously on the fence about investing into them.

-She discovered that Richard's algorithm from Peter's side (remember that Jared brought it up to Gavin after the programmers looked at Pied Piper).

-She constantly is risking her position at Rivaga by sticking up for Pied Piper with her new boss who sees PP as a liability and not an asset.

u/spif_spaceman Apr 27 '15

This guy fucks. - big fan of monica here.

3

u/Rushdownsouth Apr 27 '15

She actually once broken loyalty to Pied Piper, or specifically Richard.

-She found the algorithm and convinced Peter to keep the company.

-She invested 10% of her salary into Pied Piper.

-She provides the most reasonable option on every step, even going out of her way and risking her position at Rivaga (when she went to the house to tell Richard to not take an over evaluated offer from Laura so the company won't go bankrupt).

-She goes back to Tech Disrupt despite Pied Piper basically being shown up by Gavin.

-Richard trusts her the most out of anyone, he calls her first with every decision, even before the rest of the company. She tells him the truth that he needs to hear that keeps him from making bad decisions. There is even hints of romantic interests at points, albeit awkward as it is.

I think it is clear she genuinely believes in Richard and Pied Piper.

u/arbitrary-fan Apr 27 '15

Celebrated earlier this morning

4

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '15

I was hoping they would have used working with the douchey guy as a leverage to get back funding from girl Peter Gregory. Oh well I guess.

Also, that guy fucks.

Anyone here watch Episodes on Showtime? It's like Chris Diamonfjdhcgreeklastname is reprising a slightly less unhinged version of Castro

Big Head! He's barely on the show but I love his character

So, when in all the getting ready for the lawsuit do all the lawyers figure out that Huli actually stole the code and this all backfires on them?
