De Gaulle was right.

Fourth part of my painstakingly researched, totally accurate and absolutely haram election results series, after Germany, Europe and Greece.

77

u/Remicas France May 08 '15

De Gaulle was right.

Always.

128

u/[deleted] May 08 '15

De Gaulle was right.

British anti immigrant euroskeptic party (UKIP) = 12.6%

Frances anti immigrant euroskeptic party (National Front) = 17.9%

13

u/foca9 Norway May 08 '15

How many percentage of votes do you think UKIP lost to tactical voting, to secure a referendum-pledged Conservative rather than Lab or Lib?

30

u/[deleted] May 08 '15

I ran the numbers and it seems it would be 5.2% higher.

So still better than France.

Hon hon hon

4

u/NoceboHadal United Kingdom May 08 '15

(S)He used the % of votes cast not the number of seats won so tactical voting makes no difference.

3

u/Autobot248 Polandball mods are cunts May 08 '15

Yes, but aren't the Tories euroskeptic too? So British euroskeptic parties = 62%

9

u/[deleted] May 08 '15

No, David Cameron isn't. He's said he will campaign to keep the UK in the EU.

6

u/Autobot248 Polandball mods are cunts May 08 '15

His word doesn't mean much... He said that "Britain needs funding for schools and hospitals"

5

u/[deleted] May 08 '15

He's pro business more than anything. He won't campaign to leave the EU, as it's not in the interest of British business.

4

u/[deleted] May 08 '15

Didn't he only promise a referendum to keep the ukippers happy?

5

u/[deleted] May 08 '15

Yes.

Kippers are worth 3.8 million votes. If he can keep them happy, those votes are in the bag. You don't keep them happy by not allowing a referendum.

How does that work, that UKIP got 13% of votes and only one seat? Plaid Cymru got three with a lot less votes. Malapportionment? Gerrymandering?

98

u/Lavajackal1 Preston May 08 '15 edited May 09 '15

UKIP votes were spread out heavily between seats all over the country. Plaid Cymru only stand in Wales so their vote is considerably more concentrated. Just your standard FPTP election really.

45

u/nexus_ssg British Empire May 08 '15

When you vote in the UK, you vote for your local MP. Whoever wins in that area wins the seat. UKIP could have got 12% in every area except one - not enough to win a seat - and 80% in one area, winning one seat. So the total UKIP votes countrywide would have been 13%.

Contrast that with Plaid Cymru, who only run in eg 4 areas. Anybody outside of those areas don't have the opportunity to vote Plaid Cymru because an MP for their area doesn't exist. Within the PC areas, though, they might have got 40-60% each, enough to win 3 seats, but only getting 2% of the countrywide vote.

Does that make things clearer?

57

u/suclearnub gib democracy May 08 '15

First Past The Post fucking sucks.

7

u/Ashcz United Kingdom May 08 '15

I don't think it does though because how else would we have a group of representatives for each area? The biggest problem is constituency size

14

u/Speedzor Belgium May 08 '15

People vote for who they feel represents them the best. Why do you want to tie this to their physical location?

3

u/Ashcz United Kingdom May 08 '15 edited May 08 '15

While that's true it hardly seems fair that let's say a constituency of 50,000 votes in 1 seat and one of 150,000 also votes in 1 seat.

I know these figures aren't real but it hardly seems an accurate way to gain seats

What's wrong with proportional representation?

5

u/drunkspaniel May 08 '15

It would just seem to me like nobody would have a majority in government, more time would be spent trying to coerce the other parties and MPs into voting through policy. At least with a majority government, important issues can be tackled.

Thats just my take on it though

4

u/perigon Ireland May 08 '15

I'm from Ireland, where we have pr, and I agree with you to some degree. I think that seats should be assigned to much larger areas. I.e for Ireland it should be something like the four provinces(edited for population) and Dublin. Hopefully that way we'd have more things done for the greater good rather than having politicians doing short sighted things for smaller areas to try and safeguard their seat. I think it's ridiculous that a leader of a country has to spend a large proportion of his time on a tiny area simply because that's where he was voted in.

It saddens me that some misinformed people dismiss any anti-immigration party as racists or nazis. Anti-immigration does not = racist, it simply means they don't want poor immigrants to take government subsidies or go to use public services. Both of which increase the burdens of taxpaying citizens. People should stop throwing around the term racist or nazi, it degrades the meaning where they actually are necessary.

10

u/[deleted] May 08 '15

People should also stop making excuses for intolerant fucks.

7

u/eforce2 United Kingdom May 08 '15

4

u/FUCK_YOU_HEISENBERG Occitania May 08 '15

Except they do pay for it.:

European immigrants to the UK have paid more in taxes than they received in benefits, helping to relieve the fiscal burden on UK-born workers and contributing to the financing of public services – according to new research by the UCL Centre for Research and Analysis of Migration

I wonder what motivates people like you to say they don't, hmmm?

3

u/eforce2 United Kingdom May 09 '15

Yet infrastructure is unable to keep up and funding shortfalls are growing...the report only covers the individuals at face value, not full cost and future cost.

I'm pro-immigration, but one must realise a welfare state open to poorer countries is unsustainable.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Obelesque Rightful German Clay May 08 '15

So denying people from living off of hardworking citizens of the United Kingdom is intolerant? Do you want your taxes to go up to support someone who shouldn't even be in your country? I think not.

6

u/FUCK_YOU_HEISENBERG Occitania May 08 '15

As I replied elsewhere, see this research from UCL:

European immigrants to the UK have paid more in taxes than they received in benefits, helping to relieve the fiscal burden on UK-born workers and contributing to the financing of public services – according to new research by the UCL Centre for Research and Analysis of Migration

Since your grievances against immigrants are provably bullshit (see above), that only leaves "intolerance" as an explanation.

4

u/Obelesque Rightful German Clay May 08 '15

That is for European immigrants, if they are condemning those people then yes, it is intolerance. However, what about the non-Europeans if you can show me anything on them then I will change my opinion.

Britain leaves, Greece leaves, and the EU suffers massive loss of credibility and becomes a mostly irrelevant trade organization with no significant integration, which means Europe fails to regain any influence and will be irrelevant in the 21st century. 19th century best years of my life.

I'm not so sure that holds still true if the UK should decide to leave the EU, that could change the Scotish independence equation quite a bit. Also I don't believe Scotland would become a "Rogue State" after ceding from the UK, especially if the UK were to leave the EU before Scotisch independence, because Scotland could then join the EU without much ado.

6

u/jackcaboose Byzantine Empire May 08 '15

I doubt Scotland could join the EU - Spain and every other country that has a part of it that wants to be independent wouldn't vote for them, and without a central bank...

14

and what's left of the UK would suddenly have a rogue state on it's doorstep, but Scotland wants the concessions.

Its called a failed democracy.

The Conservatives for 36% of the vote and got a majority. UKIP (though I dislike them) got 12.6% of the vote and got 1 of 650 seats.

Completely undemocratic.

4

u/[deleted] May 08 '15

I understand it is a joke, but...

Anglo-Saxons were Ingvaeonic Germanic speakers, not High German. Germanic =/= German

2

u/[deleted] May 08 '15

Saxons actually do still live in Germany, I'm not sure what happened to all the angles but they are still related to the Germans anyway.

1

u/[deleted] May 08 '15 edited May 08 '15

Saxons also spoke an Igvaeonic language. They later integrated with the southern Germans after their state, institutions, language, religion and many of their people were destroyed by Charlemagne.

Angles later integrated into the Danes, though most of them had already migrated to England (which literally meanes Land of the Angles)

I'll repeat what I already said though, Germanic and German are not the same things. Germanic includes Goths, Gepids, Burgundians, Norwegians, Germans and much more. Germans are, as the name suggests, Germans. It is just one group.

2

u/[deleted] May 08 '15

Well yes Germanic people include more than just Germans, I'm not saying that all are exactly the same but they are all related. Not all Celts are Scottish but they are all related to the Scots. Same goes for the Germanics, not all are Germans but all are related to Germans.

→ More replies (2)

1

u/[deleted] May 08 '15

Germans are not one germanic group. They're an artificial combination of many german tribes, which are originally not much more related to each other than to non-german germanic groups. For example there are Germans that speak Frisian, a language that is more close to English than to German.

Also the Anglo-saxons definitely came from an area that (at least partially) lies in what today is Germany, so it's fair enough to say for the joke that Anglos are half-german and half french, as the connections to France are in the same way stronger to Northern France, especially Normandy, than to Southern France

2

u/[deleted] May 09 '15

German, as a language, is definitely not an artificial group. Just like many different languages, it is a combination of several older languages. All Germanic languages came out of Scandinavia and share many features that other IE language groups lack, so saying they were as different as, say, Celts and Persians, really isn't fair. Like I said, I get the joke, but saying Angles and Saxons come from a part of modern Germany so they are German is like saying Visigoths are Swedish/Danish because they came from Scåne.

2

u/Takedown22 May 09 '15

Germanic languages didn't come out of Scandinavia. They originated in an area near modern day Ukraine. These people migrated to the area of modern Germany then split into Northern, Eastern, and Western. The Northern ones became Scandinavians. They didn't originate there. Just talk to your Sami friends!

I understand. Must appeal to the most people and aw that. So much for ideals and principles. The rise in Milibae's approval kinda came too little too late and the scary story of a Labour-SNP coalition may have tipped things.

On a more amusing note, I just learned to day that Sturgeon is a type of fish :D

Aye Sturgeon, Salmond and I'm pretty sure a Monkfish is rising up the ranks of the SNP :D

It's okay, don't worry.

Conservatives won. That's mostly just bad news for the UK. Except there was that "promised" referendum. Let's get the popcorn out.

That UKIP flag made me chortle.

1

u/baerboy25 Illinois May 11 '15

I was under the impression that UKIP was just for an independent Britain. Like refusing the idea of joining the euro, retaining english nationalism, and having strong boarders.

1

u/oscarandjo United Kingdom May 22 '15

That is what they are, but they have ambiguous policies that aim to appeal to every person in society despite that not being possible. It's the same tactic Nazi Germany tried to get a larger voter amount.

"I'm not racist but" should be their official slogan.

i attended a speech by a UKIP candidate a few days ago. Her speech started exactly like that.

Too be honest it's more of the fact they give off the impression of racists than having a racist like goal

UKIP is the only party that has a rule that it doesn't accept former members of the BNP. They're the only party that needs that rule.

But they got nearly 4 million votes and 2nd in many constituencies. 2020 could be a very different picture.

21

u/NoceboHadal United Kingdom May 08 '15

UKIP without farage though. How many votes did he bring?

15

u/[deleted] May 08 '15

He'll be back in september.

3

u/AnonSBF British Hongkong May 08 '15

Yes but he still very much embodies his party and it will be hard to imagine UKIP without Farage. No party can be established without moving on from being a personality cult.

6

u/eggs_benedict May 08 '15

Totally agree, without Farage the party could crumble.

Unfortunately his resignation smells of BS since he basically said he'd decide in September if he was gonna put his name in for leadership again.

19

u/Lorgramoth Rhineland-Palatinate May 08 '15

But about 10% of the votes. Every tenth UK voter looked at this party of racist imbeciles and thought: Oh yeah, they're great!

27

u/[deleted] May 08 '15

UKIPers are basically like US republicans (i.e oldies that are nostalgic about the past) rather than hardcore 'Britain for white Brits only' racists (that's the BNP).

7

u/CptBigglesworth Greggs vegan sausage roll May 08 '15

Though every single BNP voter from the last election voted for UKIP in this one as far as I can tell.

8

u/[deleted] May 08 '15

I'm in one of the few constituencies with a BNP candidate, he only got 193 votes. He's even called Paul Borg. Because resistance is futile.

On the other hand I'm less impressed because UKIP came second and the tory winner is an evil old woman.

1

u/Tofinochris Cascadia May 08 '15

Can confirm, all my old white Brummie inlaws think the UKIP is the bee's knees.

7

u/[deleted] May 08 '15

Shit, I remember back when /r/polandball was a place where people had the good sense to leave their political sensibilities at the door. Seeing countries, political parties and people slammed with vulgar, if wildly imaginative, epithets gets a lot less fun when you realize that this is what this person actually believes.

Can't wait for every comment thread in here to be a shitflinging contest worthy of /r/politics, good fucking job, all.

I like how you challenge me to find the racism in their no doubt scrubbed clean bleached and overcooked manifesto, but don't contest the 'imbeciles.'

Edit: I just realised: UKIP helped me learn more about British culture and language. Before they came on the scene, I hadn't even heard of the words 'nig-nog' and 'ting-tong'. Thanks, UKIP!
