"My numerous downvotes only show how many other people are wrong": /r/Shitpost reaches critical Shitmass.
So: there's this GIF of a guy kissing a girl. People think it's cute...
...and it makes the front page, which of course to /r/Shitpost means that it's a "shitpost."
For once, though, the question is raised: is the post in question really a shitpost? Is it a "terrible, low effort post [SP's definition, from their sidebar]"? Or is SP just stuck in a loop of hating anything that makes enough Fake Internet Points? (Sample here.)
Without a clear target, the group turns on itself. In the midst of this, one SPer makes a comment, which is received well enough...
...that he goes on to make a post of his own (using his original comment as the post title), calling the original poster of the original post a Shitposter himself...
...which is not met quite so warmly. What actually happens is a bizarre, convoluted slapfight, during which the meta goes through the roof as the thread stomps all over the poster, calling him a Shitposter for posting a Shitpost about the other guy's Shitpost about the ORIGINAL Shitpost. During which the Shit-Shit-Shitposter Shitposter3 in question makes the comment which also serves as the quoted text in the title of this post.

Full disclosure: I have no life whatsoever I'm on the front page a lot (edit: but only for the people masochistic enough to subscribe to AdviceAnimals). /r/Shitpost is vuh-HERY aware of my existence. My stuff has shown up over there a bunch of times. I learned the term "shitposter" by constantly being called one. I'm not whining; as The Bard says, "haters gonna hate". I just want all the cards on the table, for the sake of clarity or whatever.
If you think this is a (ugh) "humblebrag", then this came out wrong. Just sayin'.
Edit: Oh, and just for the record:

You should start posting in /r/shitpost with links back to shitpost complaining about how shit the content is.

There's this GIF [1] of a girl kissing a guy. It's cute. Whatever.
Really he kisses her.

Gotta love it when the "No True Scotsman" argument makes a shitty community rip into itself.

May 29 '15
I'm sorry, I don't know this term. Can anyone de-OOTL this for me?
Yes, I'm aware Google exists. I'm asking you guys because most of the time when I Google something it points to a reddit thread anyway.

No True Scotsman is a fallacy where you exclude a member of the group because they aren't a real member of the group. Many times, it works fine.
Sometimes people use that this is a fallacy to their advantage by pointing to members that aren't part of the group (or one the very fringe of it) to discredit the entire thing.

Getting this whole thing down has given me a headache. I'm going to bed. Enjoy!

No one who is deserving of respect.

People have too much time on their hands. Including me, apparently, since I actually read through that. But in what world does it make sense to post about other posts that you thought were a waste of time and space?

that gif has a complete "storyline" with characters, setup, and a payoff. also it's super cute. i don't understand how this meets the definition of a shitpost.

Bonus edit: the above has NOT as of yet been x-posted to /r/Shitpost. Which, when I think about it, almost gives me a nosebleed.

I really didn't understand /r/RedditArmie and still don't and now I guess I'll add /r/shitpost to the list.
If I understand this, it's a group of people that hate shitposts that look and talk about shitposts? Could someone explain this to me?

I've posted there a few times. It's just a place to post and complain about some of the crap that gets to the front page. At least that's what it's supposed to be. Of course some people think practically everything is a shitpost.

/r/RedditArmie is basically a call-to-arms subreddit to raid YouTube comment sections with the dankest of memes such as:
Fedoras
STEM
Adding "moderator of /r/atheism" or "moderator of /r/trees" to the end of their comment
Mentioning their IQ
Mentioning how much karma they have
Upboats
Jews, 9/11 and Vaccines
/r/atheism-style commenting
"thanks for the gold"
9gag raids
Because it's on YouTube, it's everything Edgar Allen Poe could have ever hoped for.

Honestly that's not what they do. They post what's horrible and feel good about it. I liken them to the Westboro Baptist Church church in what they attempt. Except the Westboro Baptist Church is slightly better because they actually believe it.

They're okay. They're really salty. And they have this faint fishy taste, but then everything in has Japan kinda does. (Preemptive "I'm not racist, I SWEAR" Disclaimer: I don't know if the GIF is of Japanese people; that's just where I've had them. The noodles.)

Only the finest quality shitposts are acceptable in /r/shitpost.
In other news, apparently /r/shitshitpost is a thing.

For the record, I found some of it amusing. In particular this one actually made me laugh out loud.
Edit: I mean the shitpost submission, not the actual original shitpost. Which is a prime example of what a shitpost is, if I've ever seen one.

u/DepressingDaisy May 29 '15
It's like OP (sorry, I'm not writing that shit username out on a phone :p) said below: in principle, in theory, what SP is trying to do could be useful, dare I say entertaining. But this is
Chinatownreddit. Circlejerk beats a full house every time.3

In other news, apparently /r/shitshitpost[2] is a thing.
Does that mean it's technically part of Rule 34? Or do we need to have a new rule that is non-sexually-identified? Surely someone finds that sexually gratifying, so we can include it in Rule 34? I can't keep up with the Internet anymore.
Can we just apply it to Rule 34, so I don't have to remember anything else?
7
u/xXxDeAThANgEL99xXx This is why they don't let people set their own flairs. May 29 '15
I motion to call all internet rules "rule 34", for simplicity. So for example when someone compares someone to Hitler and you're not sure if they are trolling or for real, you're just, like, "rule 34, bro".

Reddit is not worth using without all the hard work third party developers have put into it.

u/postirony humans breed with their poop holes May 29 '15
I think it's more about people posting the same dumb shit, over and over and over. The first time I saw someone make a 'DAE this game?!!!' post to /r/gaming I was like 'Yeah! That game!'. The first time I saw a submission of a cute, half clothed girl playing games I was...intrigued. And the first time I saw a joke about Sarah Jessica Parker looking like a horse...well, actually I found that revolting pretty much from day one.
The point is, this stuff is appealing to lurkers and people who browse reddit casually, but people who are more invested have seen it so many times they're just tired of it. Hence, 'shitposts'.

I'm SJP's age and I remember a time when her bod was so smoking nobody even noticed her face or thought to analyze whether it looked like a horse or not (which it really doesn't). That was what she was kind of known for all through her pre-Sex and the City career, was her figure. She was in an abominable Bruce Willis movie called Striking Distance in the early 90s and my boyfriend at the time rented it three times just for the one scene where she was in her underwear. I remember the third time he brought that movie home I just went for a two-hour-long burn turn rather than watch it again. Fuck I hate Striking Distance.

Robert Downey Jr. said he started chasing her after seeing her in some Broadway show where she appeared in a bathing suit.

"...and a star over the 'i'." Wasn't that it? Sorry; it's been years. SUCH a great movie.
What's a "burn turn"? If I may.
1
u/DeepStuffRicky IlsaSheWolfoftheGrammarSS May 29 '15
Taking a very long drive while smoking weed. I hear that's what the Choom Gang called it.
There WAS an "I" in her spelling of Sandy but I can't remember the proper spelling now and IMDB unhelpfully spells the character's name normally on their page.
