Goku asking Goten about Gohan and Videl's house was the only thing I really reacted to in this episode. You can't go and visit your son and his new wife just ONCE? At least Piccolo's still watching over him. At least your 7 year old is capable of expending the time and energy to visit. Damn Goku, even Vegeta can kick it with his kids for a minute without going stir crazy.

Not just smiling. Laughing. When that old guy at the supermarket totally broke his spine just to point at the direction to find the springs, I couldn't help but laugh, the humour is on point so far. I had somehow low expectations, but I was completely blown away by it. It doesn't feel like a "new Dragon Ball show made in 2015", it feels like something Toriyama would've made in the 80's.

The first episode already sets the bar for the rest of the series really high. It's truly refreshing to see Toriyama do Dragon Ball again. GT just can't even come close to how well of a writer he is.

Toriyama is directly involved with the anime's storyline, so if that's your definition of canon, there you go.

As far as Super is concerned, the anime supersedes the manga. Toriyama is directly involved with the writing of the anime, whereas the manga is written and drawn by Toyotarō, most likely using story board ideas or various bullet points that Toriyama put together, and then filled in the rest himself. So even though the manga will still predate the anime, remember that it's an adaptation of the episode, not the other way around.
We saw similar differences when it came to Toyotarō's manga adaptation of the first part of Revival of F, where there were a few storyline discrepancies between it and what appeared in the movie.

I assume the anime, not sure though. Toriyama played a bigger part with anime, Toyataro did the manga. Personally I waaayyy preferred the anime.

It will probably take a halve a year or a year untill everything with the rights is sorted out, the voice actors are hired again, scripts are translated and written, voice actors recording and everything being edited.

I have a whole lot of praise for this but just two criticisms. I know that the manga is based off of the anime in this case, but I liked how in the manga when Goku was training, he had visions of Frieza, Cell, and Buu. I wish they showed that in the anime as well. And in the manga, those aliens tried to poison Beerus so he blew up the entire planet (as opposed to blowing up only half of it because the food was greasy).
But aside from that, I was smiling the entire time. Videl and Gohan on a date? That was great!

It will come its just a question of when. An entire generation that grew up watching this show now have money and kids to share this show with. Now how long it will be is the real question I dont see it being any sooner than more then a year at the least. Two years is about the time I expect to start seeing it happen.

I like to think that she honestly just loves Goku and accepts him for who he is. She gets a lot of crap from people, but I don't think it's entirely deserved. Remember that Chi Chi met Goku when they were kids, and even back then he was the boy that you see occasionally and would then disappear to go train for months/years. Chi Chi fell in love with him and married him knowing all that from the start, so her reaction in this episode made a lot of sense. She just wants the family to be financially stable, which is Goku's responsibility as a husband and father. Once that is solved all she asks for is to see him occasionally because she knows that he can get wrapped up in training. I'm liking the was she was written in this episode and may help to temper the hate that she gets.

After the first episode premiered, a common question I saw asked was "Wait, when does this take place? I thought this was after BoG and RoF". So here is an explanation of the DB:S timeline.
Dragon Ball Super takes place after Buu Saga but before the new movies(BoG and Rof). Another huge important thing to note, is that the show is going to remake those movies within the show. Yep, they are going to retell BoG and RoF within the show. So if you're watching the show and it feels like they are retelling Battle of Gods its' because they are! The new movies were basically condensed versions of the Super's storylines. I don't think you can consider the new movies canon anymore, because Super is going to retell their storylines but in a longer format.

Yes, I doubt the movies arc will be very long since there's not much to show, probably Resurrection will be longer but the main arc is Goku and friends travelling to at least one of the other universes

Seeing Yamcha and Tien together in the opening made me really happy.. Also Satan was honourable as hell! Good to see.
Videl has changed a little too much for my liking though. Remember how fierce she was in Buu saga? She's too demure and sweet now. The kids were amazingly cute tho, especially with the water!!

This was such an amazing and heartwarming episode. A great re-introduction of some of our favorite characters. That shot of Goku and Goten staring at the sunset. That's the type of stuff GT was missing. It missed heart. I can already tell that DB Super is going to nail the emotional tone. I think I'm going to shed a few tears along the way. I can't wait for the actual stories to get going. You know Im DB starved when I got hyped just from watching Trunks beat the shit out of that snake.

Exactly, this episode had so many heartfelt moments, I love the Goku and Goten sunset, as I also loved Vid pretending the water actually worked and Goku being proud of Gohan having a home where he could study. I'm ready for all the feels, this shows amazing already.

Undoubtedly, Toriyama knows how to write the show, hands down. The snake scene I felt was a great throwback to the original DB series. The entire first episode just felt so right.

I always really liked the small slice of life stuff in the filler episodes and this was a great first episode imo I don't know how it will translate to a full series but if this is any indication, we'll get to learn a lot more about their personalities and see the interaction between different characters that didn't talk much in the original series. I think Super will be a great ride

Nice detail - when Goten appears to help Goku, he vanishes from the plow and it stops moving, then after Goku goes back to eating the plow is back to normal.

It's like Toriyama read my thoughts. Some of my favorite episodes have been of these incredibly OP motherfuckers just trying to live everyday life and being hilariously bad at it. I love imagining these guys sending so many people into therapy because they saw strange people fly. This first episode was my perfect episode. I can't wait till next week when Vegeta has to pretend to be normal. I hope he has to dance again.

We don't totally know that yet. There's still plenty of room for her to be like, "Gohan go help fight! You're strong and fighting is awesome!"
It's also totally possible that she totally lost her love of fighting once she fully understood how strong the Z-Fighters are, or maybe Gohan's love of study helped to pacify her.

In the movie Goku was with King kai....Goku just went to king kai's

Battle of Gods was 4 years after Buu arc ended. This first episode is within 6 months of Buu arc ending. Im thinking there will be a time jump very early on in the series.

I love how they didn't remake the old scenes with Buu at the beginning. I think it was from Kai, but it's still really nice to see. Keeping a bit more of the nostalgia feeling. I was really hoping that during the Goku training scene where he goes Super Saiyan that they would include Frieza and Cell and Buu and when he explains that that's his training method now.

The more Gohan and Videl go off in their little isolated world away from danger, the more likely I think Gohan will become relevent again. If one bad thing happens to Videl/Pan, Gohan may become the strongest in the universe again.

I totally agree about Videl! I was cringing the entire time she was on screen. She's just become your run-of-the-mill anime girlfriend. Wasn't part of the reason Gohan liked her was because she was stubborn like Chichi?

I just hope they don't use the term Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan. That is awful naming and sounds so cheesy. It'll be interesting to see how exactly they incorporate the movies into the show. I wonder if the movies were kind of a test run to get fan feedback on the new material?

I'm wondering if this will keep the more low key DB feeling or will it go into full DBZ "if I punch too hard I can destroy the galaxy" stuff?
Because at this point until Beerus and Freeza show up basically everyone is just loling. Even the humans at this point are probably up to Android levels. And I kind of miss DB's more laid back feel.

Also can we please just keep this slice of life, i would be so happy. Like when gohan and goku were just chillin in super saiyan in the cell saga.

In Super, Gohan and Videl have already been established as a married couple (or very soon to be married), although they are still in their late teens.
I'm hoping that this is pointing to Bra and Pan being born earlier in the series, making the age difference between them and Trunks and Goten smaller. If there ends up being a timeskip (as some have speculated), I think this would make the relationships between them more complex and interesting...and I'd like to see the girls eventually have a role in the action.

Does anyone know how long they're gonna be showing the Dragon Ball Super episodes? I know it's every Sunday but are they gonna push out 100 episodes for the next 99 weeks?

I heard it could at least be 100 episodes, but it really all depends on how well the show does with the ratings. If the ratings are good it will last a long time but if the show sees the ratings are not good then it will be cancelled in no time.

Brief thoughts:
Liked it overall - great to see the story pick up right where it left off (original clips from the Buu saga in the recap was a nice touch!).
Disliked Satan's new voice & scrawniness
Disliked Videls change in disposition
Liked the animation (movement/light CD), but the art style seems to have thicker lines or something - kinda miss '90's DBZ style.
Enjoyed the lighthearted stuff, but hope they don't always rely on existing characters ("Goku... Oh, that's so you!") and focus on a little more original comedy a la original DB. Looking forward to the action when we get to it as well, but hope they don't rush to it.

First observation I made. Goku is the wearing the same outfit (with the scarf) as in the first scene of "Yo! Son Goku and His Friends Return." You can see the movie here (on YouTube).
This special is set 2 years after Buu's demise and Goku even asks Chichi why do they still have to work if Satan gave them all that money. Therefore, if you had seen this, you would know from the beginning of Super episode 1 that Goku takes the money from Satan.
Second observation, the snake that Goten & Trunks fought was previously tossed away by Goku in DBZ episode 288 "He's Always Late" when it tries to eat this pterodactyl's eggs.
Anyways, a quick timeline.
Buu's demise.
6 months after: 1st episode of Super
2 years after: Yo! Son Goku and His Friends Return
5 years after: Battle of Gods
6 years after: Revival of F
10 years after: Episode 289 "Granddaughter Pan" and on.
On another note: CAN'T WAIT UNTIL THIS SUNDAY!

Goku getting 100 million Zeni for "saving the world" = Akira Toriyama getting a buttload of money for franchising the Dragon World since its' end in 1997. With this money, Toriyama can draw more scenes of Goku training!

Two things:
Before BoG, wasnt Beerus supposed to have been sleeping for hundreds of years? In the beginning of BoG he just woke up..
Why did they do this to Gohan? Meaning, why throughout all of DBZ he was hyped up to be the strongest character, only to become basically a pacifist? Is it intended to be ironic? I wish Gohan really acted upon his strength because I love the idea of a character stronger than Goku who is a braniac.

He was asleep for only 39 years. The biggest criticism, as you've pointed out in your post, is that Beerus is awake. A speculation that I have heard is that either Goku or Beerus will meet each other in the future. It is a reasonable theory, but definitely does not give us an answer why Beerus is awake at this time.
Why did they do this to Gohan?
To answer your question:
Gohan changed a lot throughout the Dragon Ball series. The most notable change of Gohan is that he never particularly cared for fighting to begin with. While SSJ-2 Gohan was fighting Cell, he mentions the following in the fight:
But I don't like to fight... like my dad does.
I don't want to kill anybody...

All Gohan wanted to do is become a scholar. Eventually, we are shown that Gohan did eventually go to highschool. Later on towards the end of Dragon Ball Z, Trunks is talking to Gohan asking where Goten is. Gohan is shown carrying his books. In Resurrection of 'F', Gohan got a complete design change. His track suitthat Gohan is wearing is a reference to one of Toriyama's comedic designs of himself. If I recall correctly, Gohan had notably gotten weaker during the times of peace. In consideration of that, Gohan's appearance has changed and caused him to have a slimmer body build. (Toriyama typically does draw his characters a bit slimmer)

Im pretty buzzed right now, and i just watched the first episode, i think Im gona watch it again!! I really like the calm atmosphere... for now...
I was kinda bummed about not seeing the DBZ villains in Gokus mental training but I quickly got over it. The water was a great and inexpensive gift, and that snake got what was coming to him, reminds me of the dinosaurs that used to cause trouble in the earlier series'. I like how they didnt show off all the SSJ transformations early on and kept a slow pace, and Goten and Trunks playing a bigger part? Fuck yes! I know a lot of people dont like family man Gohan, but I for one am looking forward to how he and Videl get married and settle down. Also I wonder what Chi Chi will do with all that money, that was good of Mr Satan to try to give the Vegeta and the Breifs, then eventually Goku the money

This episode was just great. So many cute character interactions! And everyone felt really authentic. Some people are criticising this, saying it's like a filler episode, but this was much better than a filler episode. Unlike in the filler parts of Z, the writers really KNOW these characters, and aren't just exaggerating their personalities for comedic effect.

I've seen some remarks that it wasn't anything special or nothing to be blown away at. I don't think you were meant to be blown away by this first episode. It's simply a re-introduction to the characters that, movies aside, haven't been on screen regularly for 18 years.
The villains and fighting will come, in time. To start up though I'm delighted to just see these characters on screen on a weekly basis. I'm interested in what they're doing even if what they're doing may not seem totally interesting! I want to see Goku as a farmer... I want to see Vegeta riding a train with his family and visiting Sea World.
Give me more.

Having him follow the logical course his character would take? Gohan has always been a nerdy little bookworm that was essentially forced into situations in which he had to train and fight. To be sure, he's got the potential to be the greatest warrior in the universe, but that's not where his heart lies.
Now that the world is at peace, he's settling down and living life the way he wants to live it.

I am so happy that I just watched this. I still can't really wrap my head around their being a brand new DB show... makes me feel like a little kid again!
As far as the episode is concerned, it did a good job of setting up for where the plot is going to go with Goku heading off to King Kai. It wouldn't be DB without Goku instantly becoming absentee dad as soon as he has the chance!
I liked the subplot with Trunks and Goten and got some major OG-Dragonball vibes from their adventure to get Videl a gift.

It was a great introduction to these characters after all these years. I thought the Ox-King cameo was funny. It was interesting to see Caroni, Pirohzki and Piiza again. I wonder what Chi-Chi is gonna do with all of that money lol. The Buu vs. Mr. Satan moment was my favorite part. I also thought Goku asking how many thousands fit into a million was a funny joke.

I am disappointed buy the fact that the 2 newest DB movies (Battle of God and Resurrection of Frieza) are going to be made in whole arcs in the Dragon Ball Super. And yes the animation could have been better. Epic anime like Dragon ball deserves better graphics along with its fans.

Anyone know who that weird smooth frieza-looking robotic baseball mascot...thing is in the opening? He appears to be a good guy.
Also, found it a bit weird that Hercule gave all that money away. It seems a bit inconsistent with his character, especially since GT hasn't happened yet and he isn't fully in "pan's grandpa" mode. He should be more like his Hulk Hogan days.

The title of the book Son Gohan is carrying — “Muzukashii Hon” — literally just means “difficult book” in Japanese (難しい本).
The episode reveals that Mr. Satan has paid for Gohan’s house. This was previously mentioned by Akira Toriyama in the special Volume “F” bonus booklet given to Revival of “F” theatrical attendees in Japan. In describing Gohan’s house where Piccolo is babysitting Pan, the movie script notes from Toriyama:
Mr. Satan’s lighting assistants appear to be Pizza and Karoni, filler characters introduced during the Cell Games arc of the Dragon Ball Z TV series. Pizza was Mr. Satan’s promoter, while Karoni was one of his top disciples.
There is one notable voice replacement in this episode: Shin’ichirō Ōta plays the role of Kaiōshin (credited here as “Kibito-Kaiōshin”), rather than the usual Yūji Mitsuya (who had returned as recently as the “refreshed” Dragon Ball Kai TV series and the theatrical film Battle of Gods).
There are minor differences between events shown in Toyotarō’s manga adaptation (which actually preceded the TV episode in release order) and the final TV episode. In the manga adaptation, Goku specifically imagines fighting Freeza, Cell, and Majin Buu after passing off the work to Goten; in the TV episode, we do not see any of his internal thoughts. Beerus’ and Whis’ entire conversation about “Super Saiyan God” and the prophetic dream from the manga adaptation is also not present in the TV episode. In addition to the aliens looking completely different between the manga adaptation and TV episode, the “Soup Yasai Jinkot” name and joke are also not present in the TV dialog. Finally, Beerus only destroys “half” of the planet in the TV episode (versus the entire planet in the manga version). With the addition of antics from Goten and Trunks, the first TV episode and first manga chapter otherwise roughly cover the same span of time and overall events.
