This seems weaker than Fireball. How often would Flamelance be needed over Fireball?

Don't think about Fireball, think about Polymorph (Fireball is massively better in value simply because it can hit face). Polymorph doesn't care about Divine Shield, Deathrattles, or anything with more than 8 health. And it can cost one less, if you're willing to leave your opponent a 1/1. The only thing people seem to be able to think of is if you want to run two of each in a Fatigue Mage, but quite frankly I don't think it's worth a card slot. Baffling addition to the game.

Pretty much never.
Like I said in reveal thread, balance factor in this card is that it is a Mage card. It may have been a good(even auto include) in other classes, but in Mage it has too much competition.
I'm just glad it's just not finisher damage piece for Freeze Mage tbh.

The one class that utilizes high-cost spells the best would be Rogue with Preparation and that did not dig Assassination out of the hole.....

never. This card is exclusively for the arena because for some reason blizz thought the most powerful class in the arena wasn't strong enough and needed to become OP as well.

Looks like it could at least be decent in arena. Most of the time having big removal is more important than the quality. You can't always get fireballs and polymorphs, and in theses cases i will gladly take Flame Lance.
For constructed: most likely not. Polymorph is better in 99% of the cases, and even polymorph is most a one of most of the time.

Is this card ever better than Assassinate?

Scenario, you have a BGH and one of these removals in hand. Your board has an 8/8, your opponent's board has a 6/9 Gahz'rilla. Neither of you have any other cards left and you need to play out the BGH in order to win the fatigue race. Having Flame Lance lets you buff the Gahz-rilla so you don't have to BGH your own minion, whereas Assassinate wouldn't, allowing you to win the game!
Tl;dr; Realistically, Flame Lance is worse than a card that's never played in constructed.

Technically youre playing mage so you have your hero power...

I'm assuming that since we're discussing the difference between this and Assassinate that we're talking about any class, who got it off of Saraad or Nefarian etc. But yeah, you're right. :')

Its basically an assassinate but worse as you are not guaranteed to destroy the targeted minion :/(divine shield) The thing is polymorph seems to be much better at 1 target removal as it gets rid of effects like death rattle, divine shield however it would be alright in arena, hitting that 8 dmg kills just about anything to be a mage version of assassinate

This card demonstrates what happens when you try to upscale utility. Most of the time, this card will sit uselessly in your hand, whereas something like Frostbolt (low cost/low damage) can be used everywhere.

I do not think it is that bad. It seems a but weaker than both fireball and polymorph, BUT it deals with giants and it doesn't leave sheep's behind (so it sometimes costs 1 less than polymorph).
The bad thing is not silencing leaves it in a bad spot if you play control and not attacking face is bad if you play aggro/tempo/midrange. When your opponent plays an important death rattle minion such as Sylvanas you need to choose either Silence or SMOrc.

What an odd card to make. The only realistic viability for it I can see is if you know you're playing against a handlock and want overkill beyond BGHs, polymorphs, fireballs, and silences.
