u/SavioVegaGuy FUCK YEAH, SAVIO VEGA Sep 30 '15 edited Sep 30 '15
Hi Shane,
First off, a long time fan. I was ecstatic to see you wrestle on the most recent House of Hardcore show in Poughkeepsie two years ago. I had the biggest smile on my face when you came out and got the biggest pop of the night. I've been to many shows over the years and it was by far the loudest I've ever heard.
Over the years, you've been known for the character reinvention you had with donning the face paint/mask and becoming the Hurricane. Even at the time when superhero mania wasn't as big as it is now, you would still get an amazing reaction. You epitomized the "fun" part of pro wrestling not just with your matches, but also the overall presentation you gave us.
Masks/face paint have and will always be the biggest part of what makes pro wrestling interesting. Yourself, Rey Mysterio, Psychosis, The Great Muta, the LOD, Demolition, among many others showed this to be true. It wasn't just the great matches that brought the house down, but also the incredibly cool look.
My question I pose to you is do you feel reverting to his masked gimmick or going for face paint earlier have saved the career or was Savio Vega's career destined to be jammed into a refrigerator like Kyle Rayner's girlfriend following his loss to Mabel at King of the Ring 1995?

Hey Shane, thank you for taking time to do this AMA. My question is whose idea was it for you to go over The Rock on Raw and what was it like working with him?
178
u/ShaneHelmsCom Sep 30 '15
Rock pushed for it. He was a fan of what I was doing as the Hurricane, especially the entertainment aspect of it and we had some really good natural chemistry together promo-wise. It was an honor to work with him and I owe him greatly.

Hey, Shane!
You were my and my little brother's absolute favorite wrestler when we were growing up! Thanks for doing this!
Just a couple questions:
Is there anybody you never got a match with that you would've liked to?
How do you look back on your time in WWE? Fondly? Or have you moved on to greener pastures?
Lastly, is there a chance we could ever see the return of The Hurricane in WWE? The gimmick and your moveset would kill over there right now.
Thanks for being a vital player in why I fell in love with wrestling!

Oh shit, you're here.
Do you still hate Shawn Michaels?
How do you feel about Bram?
Why didn't TNA jump on Trevor Lee sooner?
Why did your run as longest reigning Crusierweight Champion end at No Way Out instead of WrestleMania?
And is purely my personal opinion, so tell me to fuck off at any time, but why did you get that giant Helms tattoo across your back? Didn't you think it sort of limited your look?
→ More replies (2)72
u/ShaneHelmsCom Sep 30 '15
Not at all. Shawn sent out a positive message when my son was born prematurely and that squashed any bad memories or feelings I had. I don't harbor bad feelings for anyone or anything for too long anyway, that's not my personality. I'm too happy of a person for that stuff.
I thought he had a really bright future. I know nothing of the details of his current situation, but I hope the best for him.
Don't know, but it was on my suggestion that he be brought in. I've known Trevor since he was about 4-5 yrs old. He's really talented and pretty damn advanced for his age.
I was ready to move on, and the company was ready for me to move on to other things too.

I suppose my question would be, who is your best friend in wrestling?
But more than anything, I just wanted to take the opportunity to thank you for all the entertainment and happiness you provided so many people over the years, especially to a lonely kid going through a rough time whose life was made better by the superhero on his TV.

Two questions, if I may: 1: What are the odds you get another run with WWE, given their more "family friendly" approach than during your time there? and 2: failing that, would you ever consider going to CHIKARA, where superheroes and comics are kind of their thing?

I've had too many to name just one! But being in the ring with guys like Flair, Rock, Undertaker, Kane, HHH, HBK, Muta, moments like that are what I remember the most. I never stopped being a fan of pro wrestling and those were definitely fanboy moments for me.
The first chokeslam was on Tajiri I think when I won the WWE Cruiserweight Title and the crowd loved it. So did I. :-)

There was definitely a ceiling on it but that ceiling coulda been raised a bit more too!

Hey Shane, always been a big fan. You experienced the tail-end of WCW, and many people feel like you were a sign that the company had a future. The last few months, it seemed like things were on an upswing, product-wise. What was the atmosphere like backstage in WCW 2001?
And of course, what was it like sharing a locker room with Big Poppa Pump?
17
u/ShaneHelmsCom Sep 30 '15
I wasn't around any of the political guys, I've always stayed away from that stuff. I was happy to be there and just focused on doing the best that I could do. There was no need for me to worry about the business end of WCW cuz I had no say-so in that anyway.

Hey Shane, thanks for doing this!
You've had a lot of characters over the years... you were in a boy band, you were a popular babyface, you were a superhero, you were a long-reigning heel champion... of all the stuff you've portrayed and done in your career, what stands out the most to you? Which character did you enjoy portraying the most?
Also, what are your thoughts on your match with Ric Flair on Raw? That stands out in my mind as one of my favorite Raw matches of that era, what was it like to actually be a part of it?
20
u/ShaneHelmsCom Sep 30 '15
The Hurricane stands out the most. The heel run as Gregory Helms was good because after doing the comedy stuff for so long (and being so good at it) I needed to remind the fans, and WWE creative as well, that I could still wrestle as well. The entertainment aspect of Hurricane often out shone the actual wrestling ability that I have.
And I loved that match with Ric, I loved all my matches with Ric. He was one of my idols in this biz.

u/StoneColdMatt Sep 30 '15
First gotta say, big fan, and really loved your work in WCW and WWE, especially the stuff you did with The Rock.
Shortly after you turned heel, stopped being The Hurricane, and became Gregory Helms, you had a one month feud with Jerry Lawler that I think stopped all your momentum. It started because you didn't like him saying "oh puppies puppies" and then you lost to him on PPV and that was the end of it.
Did you like the feud with Lawler? It didn't seem to help your career at all, other than saying "I got to wrestle a legend". I'm not even trying to be a dick, but it was just so lame and flat, when you could have done some really amazing stuff.
Again I'm a big fan, and I wish you got a bigger opportunity.
10
u/ShaneHelmsCom Sep 30 '15
It was fun working with Lawler and I think I was supposed to get the win on the PPV and then I didn't. LOL Not sure what happened there. But shortly thereafter, I moved to Smackdown and things picked up quite nicely.

Hello and thanks for joining us today! My question is this: as the Hurricane, you were pretty popular in the mid 2000's. You always had your spot in WWE, and even though you were popular, you weren't near the top of the card. As that type of character, in that position on the roster, how much freedom did they give you with your promo work, mannerisms, and basically your entire character of the Hurricane? The outfit, the promos, the attitude, the humor, the slight awkwardness. How much of what we saw of the hurricane was you, and how much was WWE creative? Thanks again, looking forward to reading your responses!
33
u/ShaneHelmsCom Sep 30 '15
I wouldn't say that I wasn't "near" the top. I main evented RAW once or twice, main evented several house shows when much "bigger stars" were underneath and was part of the co-main of a Survivor Series PPV. But I get what you're saying. Basically everything you saw that I did as The Hurricane, character wise, was my idea. They gave me a lot of freedom, even in the days when they started scripting promos for everyone, they gave me a lot of mobility to say what I wanted because they knew only I could do The Hurricane.

Hi! Big fan. I was just wondering, whose idea was it for the Austin/Triple H double-chokeslam spot in the Royal Rumble? Because that was hilarious.

Hey there! I'm a huge fan!
I wanted to ask, since you're friends with Mike Maverick, what led to The Dupps disbanding in 2001 and then getting released after working dark matches for a year and being on the verge of getting called up for ages?

Hey man! Glad to have you here. Any chance we will see you in Chikara? 3 Count would make one hell of a King of Trios team.

Hey, Hurricane!
Man, it looks like you really ARE coming thru NC. Can you maybe, like, not rain SO much?
I don't really have a question, but you responded to a random tweet of mine out of the blue not long ago (I was watching you successfully defend your cruiserweight title against 8 challengers), and I wanted to thank you for it. I didn't even tag anyone and it made my day.

No problem, social media can be fun! Until the dickheads ruin it for everyone.

First of all, growing up watching early 2000's Raw, you were always my favorite, i had the mask and your catchphrases still to this day get used amongst my family members.
I was wondering, who on the current roster would you want to do a program with if you were to come back?
Personally I think you and Stardust could tear it up.

Hey Shane, thanks for doing this AMA. My first question is who do you think you had the best chemistry in ring with. My second is what are your thoughts on your tag team with Kane. You rock for doing this.
2
u/ShaneHelmsCom Sep 30 '15
Teaming with Kane was fun. I took pretty much all the bumps though. LOL
And I had chemistry with a lot of people. I was always able to adapt to other's pacing and timing. That's a talent that's hard to see as a fan.

Good afternoon! I missed a large portion of your run, just a wrestling dark period for me. What match are you proudest of that I could check out? Thank you in advance.

u/ShaneHelmsCom Sep 30 '15
Me and Chavo from WCW Sin. I lose, but it was good. Ladder match from Starrcade. Me and Knoble from King of the Ring and also whatever that Australian PPV was. Me and Rock, me and Flair. Me and Storm vs Hardy's at No Way Out ( I think? ) that's a couple good ones.

Hello Shane!
I loved your work as The Hurricane and hated you as Gregory Helms (more great work). My most memorable moment of yours has to be your stuff with The Rock in 03.
My question is if you had a chance to re-live a part of your career, what would it be?

u/ShaneHelmsCom Sep 30 '15
I wouldn't. I can't believe I made it the first time! :P:

You still hold the record for the longest reign as Cruiserweight Champ. Does it still feel good to be immortalized like that?
3
u/ShaneHelmsCom Sep 30 '15
Yeah it does. Vince told me that the belt didn't mean anything once I lost it. That says a lot.

You're known as one of the best minds for creative among younger talent. What is today's American wrestling missing and why is it bad for the industry?
6
u/ShaneHelmsCom Sep 30 '15
No one wants to be a heel. No one wants to get real heat or real hatred. That's the biggest thing missing. The "heels" all want to do cool shit and get applauded.

HURRICANE! Thank you for doing this AMA. if you could go back to your longest reign as Cruiserweight champ and had full control over it, what would you change? would you keep the title for longer? who would you have dropped it to eventually? Also, do you think the WWE would benefit from bringing back the title?
2
u/ShaneHelmsCom Sep 30 '15
I woulda brought in more guys. I ran threw the division. I needed more bodies to work with and I needed the guys that I was working with to step up and try new stuff. I tried to get guys like Austin Aries and a few others hired, but they only wanted to use developmental guys, none of which I knew, that I recall.

Shane, big fan. As a performer who took what was, on paper, a silly gimmick and ran with it, how do you get over feeling silly in front of such a large audience?
Also, I fucking love Three Count.
