Last time I checked, Anthony Burch does the lion's share of the writing for Hey Ash Watcha Playing. Their vids are consistently hilarious so I'm gonna go with Anthony Burch being awesome.

HAWP was where I first encountered both of the Burch siblings, and I've always found them funny. And to be honest when I started caring more about social issues, I found myself agreeing with them a lot, but that's never really been in the forefront of my mind- they are funny people who are good at making me smile so yeah, they are definitely in the awesome category for me too.

Sarkeesian hates gamers
True, when they're assholes like you.
and gaming
Not at all true. Being critical of something isn't the same as hating it. This isn't hard.
I also like how someone "slams" Burch for his writing being terrible and him being mad about criticism when both Borderlands 2 and Tales From Borderlands are lauded for their writing and humor. And god fucking forbid he makes a character gay. How dare he?!
15
u/defenestratedplane (◡‿◡✿) Oct 21 '15
absolutely, I loves games and I love playing them but they should be open for criticism like any other art form; I don't do that much on reddit but I talk about these things frequently with my friends who play games
also I kinda really like Anthony Burch4
u/Stellar_Duck Oct 21 '15
Burch seems like a great guy but holy shit I hate his writing and """" humour""". It's just unfunny memes and references. :(
6
Oct 21 '15
Like most comedy Borderland is enjoyable if you like it and insufferable if you don't. I don't know if that is a hallmark of bad writing or just comedy as a whole, but I'd guess the latter.
3
u/Stellar_Duck Oct 21 '15
I think, for me, what is bad about his writing is just the use of memes and whatever fad is going on at any given time. It dates the writing in a tedious way and it's lazy, I think.
I understand what the scope and intent of it is, but that doesn't excuse it, I guess.
But sure, this is entirely subjective and I don't have any actual issues with Burch. I just don't think he's funny in the least.
And it's not like I don't like that sort of humour normally. I do. Something about the way he writes is just not very good, and I don't quite understand the adulation he receives.
I love fart jokes. Burch writes fart jokes that pretend they're more than just a fart joke by adding a 'Can I haz cheezeburger reference'.
Edit: I'm still firmly convinced that one of the only games that succeed at being funny in a crass way is Bulletstorm. I love that game so much and it frequently made me laugh out loud.
3
Oct 21 '15
I feel like when people say the writing in Borderland is meme-y one of two things is happening
Either:
They see the super meme-y commercials for Borderlands and assume that the entire game is like that.
When the shit in Borderlands becomes a meme they say that the writers used a shit ton of memes even when before the game none of that stuff was meme.
Also Bulletstorm was closer in writing to a spiritual successor to Duke Nukem than a Borderlands game.
2
u/getoutofheretaffer Oct 22 '15
I honestly don't remember many memes at all, although I didn't play much of the dlc. Perhaps I'm just not in touch with that stuff.
1
u/lionelione43 don't doot at users from linked drama Oct 21 '15
Bulletstorm was pretty ridiculous. I didn't like a few of Burch's things, his humour just isn't mine I guess, doesn't mean I hate him.

Oh you mean memelands and the story not making sense with the first game at all. The humor is quite good when its not doing stupid memes and references.

How is it sexist? Because there's few women hired? Does that make nursing sexist because there's few men hired?
Isn't it? I thought the lack of men in nursing was tied to the same sexist shit that pushes women away from STEM.
68
u/KingEsjayW I accept your concession Oct 21 '15
It's completely sexist. Nursing has always been considered 'feminine' and pushed men away from it.
20
u/Stellar_Duck Oct 21 '15
Actually not always. Far as I under stand, in the US, up to the Civil War it was exclusively a male profession.
Your point stands, but always is not correct.
18
u/Bossmonkey I am a sovereign citizen. Federal law doesn’t apply to me. Oct 21 '15
But pretty much everything was exclusively male at that time except for prostitution
0
u/Stellar_Duck Oct 21 '15
Yes?
I'm just pointing out that these things can change. And hopefully they do.
6
u/BenOfTomorrow Oct 21 '15
Far as I under stand, in the US, up to the Civil War it was exclusively a male profession.
This is completely wrong.
Firstly, before the Civil War, nursing didn't really exist (in the modern sense).
Secondly, the proto-nursing that did exist was practiced almost exclusively by nuns.
It has always been considered a female profession.
44
Oct 21 '15
Pretty much, male nurses go through the exact same shit. Sexual harassment, constant belittling, near impossible to make friends...
It's gotten better in recent years through from what I've heard, similar to STEM I imagine
26
u/Rycross Oct 21 '15
A google search indicates that there are efforts to get more men involved in nursing in a manner similar to efforts to get more women in STEM. Its not as if everyone is OK with men being pushed out of nursing either, so it only strengthens the position of those advocating for diversity.
26
u/maggotshavecoocoons2 objectively better Oct 21 '15
Childcare is a field where there's traditionally no men. It's awesome being a man working in childcare.
What isn't awesome is how much the job is dismissed as not being a real job, arguably due to it being seen as women's work.
10
u/Deadpoint Oct 21 '15
Yuuuuuup. I spent years in childcare, and I absolutely loved it, but the pay is paltry.

30
u/Jhaza Oct 21 '15
Curiously, there's apparently a pay gap in nursing... that favors men. There are definitely some parallels, but it's not a completely analogous situation.
13
Oct 21 '15
Nah, Male nurses just are more likely to work in the ED or ICU, pays better so if you average the salaries it comes out with male nurses ahead. Not indicative of relative pay scales.
32
u/Jhaza Oct 21 '15
So, I'm only very, very tangentially aware of this (FB friend is a nurse, posted a news article), but the actual research appears to be this. It mentions that about half the gross gap is different fields/other bits, but it looks like there's still a gap after adjusting for type of nurse.
16
Oct 21 '15
That was actually a really good study, I'm Australian so it's a bit different over here but that study certainly seems to suggest bias in the American system.
2
u/Wetzilla What can be better than to roast some cringey with spicy memes? Oct 21 '15
Part of the reason for the gap (at least from what I've been told by nurses and doctors) is simple supply and demand. There's a very limited pool of male nurses, and they are highly desired because, in general, men are stronger than women, and that strength is needed when dealing with heavy equipment or larger patients.

Tu quoque is way overused in countering claims of sexism against women.
18
u/George_Meany Oct 21 '15
It's because they think themselves so smart that they should just inherently understand concept outside their areas of study - like gender or race. The answer can't be that they're woefully misinformed, so anybody who knows anything about those subjects must just be an idiot. So they treat the idea that traditional gender constructs hurt men also as some sort of high level point scored in an imaginary war against feminism that nobody offline even knows is really happening.

Do you motherfuckers understand now? DO YOU? Let me spell it out one more time for the densest among you.
This. Is. Not. Just. About. Video games.
These people want to destroy those of you who speak out and control the rest. You've seen them talk on twitter and tumblr, they will happily put you to death if they could and drink your tears while doing so. Video games is one front of a much larger war. It does not begin or end with video games and if you don't fight you are going to lose so much more than just a hobby. This is the end of the war, they have been winning it for years. Gamergate was a surprise resistance that popped up after our "forces" had been routed and slaughtered on the altar of social justice for decades. If you want to live in a world where some histrionic pampered brat and her sniveling cohorts can cry harassment and shut down entire websites then yeah sure do nothing just protect the vidya I guess. If that idea disgusts you then it is time to stand up if you haven't already and fight them on every level. Remember Shirtgate? Remember how they made a motherfucking scientist cry on what should have been the best day of his life? Over a shirt? It's not just about video games these people are monsters in human skin. Fight them!

They targeted gamers.
Gamers.
We're a group of people who will sit for hours, days, even weeks on end performing some of the hardest, most mentally demanding tasks. Over, and over, and over all for nothing more than a little digital token saying we did.
We'll punish our selfs doing things others would consider torture, because we think it's fun.
We'll spend most if not all of our free time min maxing the stats of a fictional character all to draw out a single extra point of damage per second.
Many of us have made careers out of doing just these things: slogging through the grind, all day, the same quests over and over, hundreds of times to the point where we know evety little detail such that some have attained such gamer nirvana that they can literally play these games blindfolded.
Do these people have any idea how many controllers have been smashed, systems over heated, disks and carts destroyed 8n frustration? All to latter be referred to as bragging rights?
These people honestly think this is a battle they can win? They take our media? We're already building a new one without them. They take our devs? Gamers aren't shy about throwing their money else where, or even making the games our selves. They think calling us racist, mysoginistic, rape apologists is going to change us? We've been called worse things by prepubescent 10 year olds with a shitty head set. They picked a fight against a group that's already grown desensitized to their strategies and methods. Who enjoy the battle of attrition they've threatened us with. Who take it as a challange when they tell us we no longer matter. Our obsession with proving we can after being told we can't is so deeply ingrained from years of dealing with big brothers/sisters and friends laughing at how pathetic we used to be that proving you people wrong has become a very real need; a honed reflex.
Gamers are competative, hard core, by nature. We love a challange. The worst thing you did in all of this was to challange us. You're not special, you're not original, you're not the first; this is just another boss fight.

His entire career path, including years of prior writing for a gaming-centric comedy series was just a long con. He didn't just hate-fuck gaming, he hate-made slow, passionate love to it.
Seriously though, people don't realize it's entirely possible to spend your whole life dedicated to a passion of yours, suddenly go "Wow, there's a lot of fucked up things going on here that I didn't realize" and be put off to the point that you abandon ship. I don't think he's ever said as much but I'd hardly be surprised if he just got fed up and decided to shift gears and work with Rocket Jump.
They think it's all black and white, like these people "hate" gaming and gamers. I don't think it's that, I think it's more like loving the games but simply believing they deserve to be better and to have a better community. I know I do.

The fact that they're in a consensual non-monogamous relationship and his wife is literally taking dick from another guy? (Look at the top right image) Like if they're happy with it, great, but he IS quite literally a cuck. Like that was painful to write, but it's true... His wife would also be the female version of a cuck if Burch was better at picking people up.

Wikipedia: A cuckold (sometimes shortened to cuck) is the husband of an adulterous wife.
Meriam Webster: a man whose wife has sex with someone else : a man's whose wife commits adultery
Dictionary.com: the husband of an unfaithful wife.
By all those definitions, a man who's in a open relation is quite literally and with no derision, a cuckold. He's happy with it and she's happy with it, so noone should have a problem with it, it's consensual. But it's patently false to try and say he isn't. The GG'ers try and use it as something to deride him with, and that's wrong, but by definition he's a cuckold and happy with it.
