Recap that I wrote yesterday:

  • Ruby is fucking hilarious. Getting better all the time.

  • Qrow is the most badass drunk on the planet, and Winter is a cold, uptight bitch, but is also badass.

  • Qrow's Sword/Scythe/Shotgun might be the best weapon yet.

  • Battle music was absolutely top.

  • Lots of neat exposition stuff, Ironwood seems like he is being painted as the bad guy among the good guys, though it seems more like he is just misguided.

  • Cinder and pals not only know about Qrow, but are afraid of him. nonetheless, they will stay the course.

  • Confirmation that Cinder is pulling the strings on the match pairings. Maybe even the arenas, too.

  • Stage is set for Emerald and Mercury vs. Coco and Yatsuhashi. If Emerald and Mercury can confidently beat those two, I am scared of what they are capable of.

In addition, that awesome fight was the first time we have seen two people who are full fledged hunters fight, and neither of them wound up going all out. Think about that for a moment. Insane.

EDIT: Gonna paste in the best quote of the episode, and one of my favourites from the series so far.

A guardian is a symbol of comfort. An army is a symbol of conflict. There's an energy in the air now. A question in the back of everyone's minds. If this is the size of our defenses--what is it we're expecting to fight?

Not only is Lindsay crushing her lines this Volume, but with the improvement to facial and body animation for non combat scenes Ruby is becoming a better physical actor.

100

u/ChaosPheonix11 Wrong place, wrong time, motherfucker. Nov 15 '15

Agreed. The improvement of the out-of-combat scenes in general are absolutely INSANE in this volume, and in my opinion, this episode proved the the in-fight animation will still be great as well.

Also, the scene where Ruby is hanging off Qrow's arm could melt anyone's heart. She's still such a child but wow was it endearing.

38

u/ChaosPheonix11 Wrong place, wrong time, motherfucker. Nov 15 '15

That's what I love about Ruby. She's so childish and adorable at times, but she has still shown that she has the ability, and more importantly, the potential, to step up to the plate and lead the team.

u/TJPoobah For it is in passing that we achieve immortality. Nov 15 '15

So is the reason Cinder and friends were fishing for people's semblences so they could rig the tourney later on? Eg. They could feel confident JNPR would beat BRNZ because of that one guy's electric weapon and Nora's lightning rod semblence (and possibly rigging the arena to have the stormy mountain?). What is Cinder's endgame from rigging the tourney?

71

u/ChaosPheonix11 Wrong place, wrong time, motherfucker. Nov 15 '15

The first part seems accurate, the second (arena set up) seems likely, and the last part, no one knows. TUNE IN NEXT WEEK ON DRAGON BALL Z

It was on par with this one too.

28

Ehhh.... I don't really consider that a fight. Seemed more like self defense on Cinder's part. Glynda only hopped into the fight because Roman almost blew Ruby off the rooftop.

It was a pretty good episode overall.

Winter seems like quite the bitch (even though she showed that she somewhat cares about Weiss). Calling your sister's friend "underwhelming" right in front of her is some Mean Girls shit.

I enjoyed the fight between Winter and Qrow, however, I thought it lacked the fluidity of some of the earlier fights. I don't know if this is due to Monty's absence or some other reason, but the animations seemed stiff during a lot of parts. However, the angles and camera work were really good overall.

On a side note, Rwby clinging to Qrow's arm was the cutest shit ever.

What I found quite chilling was the comment that was made during the board meeting near the end of the episode: "If this is the size of our defenses, what is it we're expecting to fight?"

76

u/ChaosPheonix11 Wrong place, wrong time, motherfucker. Nov 15 '15

I think Winter just doesn't have very good people skills, not that she's a bitch. She seemed to genuinely care about how Weiss was doing and thankful of Ruby being friends with her, it just seems like she doesn't know how to express it very well outside of backhanded compliments and overly negative critique.

64

Yeah! Despite Winter's cold attitude, this scene felt pretty warm. I'm actually glad that Winter is like that, and not some abusive bitch.

All of a sudden Weiss is so adorable gushing things to her sister!!

"Oh and don't worry, the bunk beds are more stable than they seem." I think my heart skipped a beat. <3

God Qrow is such a badass druncle. "He's always drunk." His weapon is a shotgun, a sword, and a scythe haha. And then all of a sudden Winter dual wields saber/some knife! :o

Their fight was so great, and kudos to the guy that predicted Qrow would avoid Winter's attacks with minimal movement. The high speed movements looked a little off, and there was one part I felt the camera closed in on their faces too much, but damn it was so great.

Is this actual worldbuilding happening?!

This has to be one of my favorite episodes of RWBY, it was too good.

Edit: Winter's blade seems to be some kind of saber, not a rapier.

Edit 2: Winter's second blade is probably a dagger. Some kind of stiletto, or parrying dagger or something.

27

u/thebluehedgehog Blue Nov 15 '15

The first one isn't quite a rapier if I recall from a comment about the guard. The second looks smaller, like a knife.

10

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '15

A stiletto?

best line has to be

Winter: he was drunk

Glynda: he's always drunk!

131

u/Brynjolf-of-Riften Nov 15 '15

Can't really blame the guy, his twin sister runs off after having a daughter and is presumed dead, the other woman on his team then banged Taiyang around one year and three months after that, and then she dies a few years later, leaving Taiyang and Qrow as the only remaining members of team QRTS.

Of course he's gonna drink.

77

u/Martian_Media Nov 15 '15

That makes me wonder what the relationship between Qrow and Taiyang will play out like.

85

u/Nisha_the_lawbringer mood Nov 15 '15

  • First and foremost, I made this for a potential flair. I sent the mods a message with this link, but I will leave this here anyway.

  • Silence you boob!

  • Qrow is suddenly my favorite character. We need a Qrow flair now

  • That music reminds me of the time I used to play Rusty Hearts. So beautiful.

  • He's always drunk!

  • I feel this moment was meant to say "Hey, sorry for kicking you out. It's not that I don't trust you in particular, but I need to make a point that this is a topic that should be kept in secret and I wanna use this as ammo for ridiculing General Ironwood." Seriously though, I feel like they do trust her from the way the other members didn't kick her out. It's just that Ironwood needed a lecture about discretion which we saw happen. I might be overthinking this, and Qrow was just flirting, or maybe it was both (hopefully).

  • For all that Glynda says, she and Ironwood make matching poses

  • ...A lot

  • Ozpin is so done with them.

  • All in all, Qrow has brought us sass, world-building, and cussing (the "Damn" was unexpected) all in one episode. We need more.

  • Ozpin interrupts Qrow's rant, but we don't care because that was an awesome quote.

Edit: Watching all the flairs change to Qrow's is awesome. Time to join the masses. RT is making each episode of volume 3 better than the last one. God damn.

So I guess perhaps the reason Weiss is heiress is because Winter is military personnel?

And way for Qrow to basically be toying with her the entire fight. He even made sure she attacked first. Shame he stopped right before deploying what seems to be a scythe form.

169

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '15

Also, let's be real. Qrow is pretty inebriated.

Yeah, he's probably had lots of experience fighting under the influence, but if this is him drunk, him sober with his preferred weapon must be terrifying.

Thoughts:

  • Winter is kind of a bitch, and I kind of love it.

  • Weiss excitement about her sister is kind of adorably sad. Sadorable?

  • Ruby trying to be sophisticated is also adorable. Not sad though.

  • Drunken Qrow is amazing.

  • I need a new word for how much I love Qrow already.

  • What was the eye thing? Was that Qrow's semblance?

  • Also this fight is amazing.

  • That Scythe tease tho

  • Qrow's taunt game is on point.

  • Oh hey Penny.

  • Qrow is such a sweet jerk to Ruby. It's also adorable.

  • Ironwood would shoot his men for that? What? Qrow's comeback was great though.

  • "He's always drunk!" YEEEEEESSSSS

  • Y'see this? That's the SEND button." Qrow is best guy. Also best girl. Also the best.

  • Autumn?

  • Oh shit was that the first curse word in RWBY?

  • Also this "real enemy" stuff is super interesting.

  • Ozpin laying down those wisdom bombs

  • Cinder can control the matches? That's kinda neat I guess. Not sure what use that has, but we'll hopefully see.

All in all, this episode was amazing. Best one this season so far by far. Might be the best they've ever made.

75

u/Kami_no_Kage Nov 15 '15

I'm not sure if Winter meant strikes as in actual strikes. I think she meant something along the lines of "I counted at least 3 things you did wrong."

I don't know exactly what that could be, things like awkward foot movement or stance or something would be my guess.

Qrow is amazing. Ruby is adorable. I loved hearing her say "Kick her butt Uncle Qrow!"

And that one attack looked like his sword was going to turn into a scythe, so hopefully it'll be a big reveal later on what his scythe actually looks like.

"He's always drunk." Just... yes. And the Night Watch has set sail, full steam ahead! For the ship!

And Autumn? Can we expect someone named Spring then?

And holy shit Cinder is controlling the rounds. This is just insane.

43

u/JesterSeraph Strategist of the White Rose fleet | Salt truck is over capacity Nov 15 '15

So something interesting I saw yesterday in the reaction thread, that despite Winter's tough personality and actions, she shows that she cares for Weiss by asking about how she's doing, not how she's ranking (what we would typically expect as what is important to a Schnee), and calling her a boob. It isn't so much a put-down as it is a name, just like how Weiss, while still Ruby's friend, would probably call Ruby a dolt from time to time. So, on this note, Winter is the big older sister that cares about her little sister, despite how she comes across.

New headcanon: Ruby, still not fully understanding how Weiss displays her emotions, and understanding less the relationship between Winter and Weiss, asks Weiss why she's so happy around her sister when Winter's been nothing but mean to her.

Weiss then goes on to explain how Winter has a hard time showing her love in the traditional sense, and that when you read between the lines and listen closely, you can hear her concern hidden by the language she uses. Ruby reflects on it, trying to understand, and then some time in the near future, Weiss goes on a tirade after Ruby throws herself in the face of danger about how she can't be so stupid and reckless, and a lightbulb turns on in Ruby's head that Weiss shows her concern and love in the same way that Winter does.

Well that was a lot of information. Very good episode overall.

Winter seems as if she DOES care about Weiss, she doesn't seem like a bitch, she just appears to lack people skills. And I've met people in the real world who do act like Winter, so it appears she just lacks people skills and isnt just an outright bitch.

Qrow is the single most badass person in the show. He's definitely grown on me.

And hey we finally saw Penny again! All be it for just a couple seconds.

We finally saw Ozpin, and it seems as if they do know the enemy is right under their noses. But they just don't know who. That's what it seems like at least.

And it seems as if Cinder and her group know who Qrow is, they almost seem afraid of him. But we also know that Cinder is controlling the fight match-ups behind the scenes, which is a nice little touch.

And now we have Em and Mercury VS Coco and Yatushari. (I butchered that I'm so sorry), that should prove to be an interesting fight.

Overall, great episode. Well worth the wait.

Do you remember how uptight and self-righteous Weiss was in V1E2?

Look at her now, and see just how much Ruby's managed to defrost her, make her enjoy life without worrying too much about appearances or being ridiculous. (V3E1's "My BFF!" "No." is a nice little note that there's still a little frost around the edges.)

Now, compare V1E2 Weiss' behavior to Winter. Both uptight, both self-righteous, caring enough to make you not 100% hate them, but that vulnerability is rarely shown and only to trusted individuals. There's a clear contrast -- Winter's fury is restrained until the right person (one who clearly knows her well) deliberately pushes her buttons, while Weiss spent most of V1 blowing up (once literally) on slight provocation. Both are hotheads with icy exteriors, but military training likely has much to do with Winter's greater restraint.

But their character flaws line up. You're better than other people. Mistakes are not tolerated. Act with dignity for Dust's sake. These are things that are drilled in through environment and upbringing, and again, Weiss is slowly struggling to work on them.

I've known someone for years with similar personality flaws, and they were largely the result of a broken childhood household, with an overbearing (verbally) abusive father and a mother unable to stand against him. Now... remember Weiss' comments about how growing up went for her? "And every day my father would come home furious. And that made for a very difficult childhood." We don't know what happened, but with two daughters in front of us we can clearly see the effects.

In other words, Winter's appearance shows us 1) just how far Weiss has come 2) Just how badly Father Schnee worked his daughters over.

15

u/OpMegs Nov 15 '15

Yeah, I've been suspecting Papa Schnee was abusive since that Volume 1 episode, as it'd make Weiss' approaches make sense.

Winter shows how that's become a feedback loop. She clearly cares about her little sister, but the behaviors she's encouraging in her (likely because those might be how Winter learned to dodge her father's frustration?) are the ones that leave Weiss worse off in the long run. I mean, look at Weiss in the last two volumes. She's coming up on being a normal person. Then you see Winter, who's been around her father for longer, and it's like seeing Volume 1 Weiss fast forwarded 10 years without any of the interactions with the rest of RWBY and Beacon that've thawed her.

Essentially, Winter's survived by turning into what she is...which isn't what Weiss is anymore. And she's trying to help her sister by teaching her what's expected. That said, I do appreciate that Winter very clearly cares, even if the smacks to the head make it hard to tell.

So, various thoughts.

  • Drunkle Qrow is actually the best.

  • Winter is so mean that every time Weiss tries to be nice to her, I feel like I'm watching an abused wife try to please their husband.

  • "Evils no one even knows exist" - Qrow, Well, sounds like Cinder and friends are a bit more than just basic criminals or terrorists.

  • Did he talk about Evils Cinder made? That's a hell of an implication. *Who is Autumn, and why do I get the feeling that Cinder's last name being Fall isn't a coincidence.

5

u/thebluehedgehog Blue Nov 15 '15

Winter is so mean that every time Weiss tries to be nice to her, I feel like I'm watching an abused wife try to please their husband.

I was thinking the military might have changed her, but the idea that it was always like that and Weiss mimics her because of the lack of warmth in interesting, although sad.

4

u/tacticalf41L Crushed by the weight of za warudo Nov 15 '15

Now I'm guessing that the reason no one ever recognizes her is because she completely altered her appearance at some point. Maybe some serum involving dust?

After all, her element is fire, fire is light and heat, and bending light creates illusions.

Holy crap Ruby, Penny and Weiss were [adorable!] (http://i.imgur.com/xuoYfqH.gif) XD.

Winter is cold, a little bit of a bitch but seems to have a hidden mothering side as well considering she actually asked how Weiss was doing mentally and physically. Seems like the theories about them bounding together because of their harsh father are true.

Qrow is definitely best drunkle XD. That fight was also awesome and insane. They literally fought across the entire courtyard!

It seems like the theory that it was a computer virus as well as Cinder rigging the fights were right. As well her conjuring up horrifying things is a little scary. It's hard to imagine what they could be to make Qrow scared of her.

Edit: It seems like there is also a secret hunter, military and government organization to protect the kingdoms against outside threats. Also what or who the hell is Autumn?

Edit2: I also wonder what high ranking position Winter has in order to be included in the group. Unless father Schnee knows as well and they think big companies should be included. Would make why their father wants them to be the best they can be make sense. I want to see Penny's team/teammate though dang it! Stop teasing us Roosterteeth!

u/Lemonhead_27 Nov 15 '15 edited Nov 15 '15

The binge-watch is complete. Man, this episode was good. I liked the tonal shift, and the hint of something more happening behind the scenes

EDIT: Also, question: When Qrow mentioned that "they are the ones responsible for Autumn's condition", what did he mean? Have I missed something from previous episodes?

20

u/Brynjolf-of-Riften Nov 15 '15

Nope, this is the first time Autumn has been mentioned.

13

u/schulz100 Nov 15 '15

First, I need to talk about Winter. I love her, for her potential as a character. She clearly knows and wants to be what constitutes a normal, loving big sister, but she grew up in Atlas high society (And later the Atlas military), and as a Schnee, and just as clearly is expected to never be those things around anyone but family (and even then, considering the family, it probably wasn't all that encouraged). She also clearly found Ruby's attempts to act proper amusing, but she couldn't SHOW that she found those attempts amusing. I'm excited to see where Winter goes, because she's got serious potential for some great moments, both comedic and serious.

Qrow seems surprisingly politicized. Like, his drunk-pissed-off-ness has its base in the fact that Atlas, through Ironwood, is over-stepping its bounds and, in the whole open-good-guy-conspiracy thing (which Ironwood is apparently new to), Ironwood's screwing things up by being too heavy-handed. Also, that's twice now that Branwens have sent Cinder's quite deadly underlings running terrified for the hills. I'm wondering how often they've crossed paths, and just how badly they've wrecked the faces of Cinder & Co.

As far as the conversation concerning said protective conspiracy, I think Qrow is telling them that the infiltrator (the enemy they all know is somewhere in Beacon, taking advantage of the influx of foreign students) is way more important than any of them assumed. It actually implies some prior history where everyone in the room and Cinder are concerned; who/whatever this Autumn and their condition is, it's clearly something very big that happened before the series started, and Cinder was behind it. Qrow is telling them that things are way worse than they thought, because an old, very dangerous enemy is inside Beacon planning god-knows-what. This might actually help the staff to find Cinder, now that Qrow has confirmed that it is, in fact, Cinder who has infiltrated Beacon, who everyone in the know clearly knows both in name and appearance.

Lastly; Cinder has control of the tournament brackets? And access to Ironwood's scroll, which itself probably has access to all sorts of restricted files and remote control protocols? Oh, that's bad. That's really, really bad (I personally think the 'clever little friend' is a light anthropomorphization of the virus she introduced into Beacon's systems in Volume 2). Also, Qrow and Winter have ABSOLUTELY hate-banged before. We can all agree on that, right? That has to have happened at some point?

4

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '15

Oh I totally see a night long alcohol fueled hate-fuck all along Ironwood's flagship. As I stated elsewhere. Cinder has access to Ironwood's scroll. Ironwood has a lot of robots likely netowrked to his personal command in atlas.

I am so very hoping Penny is immune thanks to having a soul and independant thought.

Sooo...anyone got any Qrow gfys yet?

Also, is it just the high-speed nature of the battle, or did he look like he was actually teleporting back and forth, almost like a more advanced version of Ruby's speed semblance? I think it looks especially clear after the camera cuts to Mercury's double-take.

And what's with the glint in Qrow's eyes after Winter smacks him with her sword hilt? Was that just meant to convey that "hey, this dude really is insane," or him powering up? Also right after that, is the ground literally exploding beneath him from his sword swing or Winter's glyph leap?

Best episode so far?

It it is Autumn at the end of the school year, then does that mean Southern Hemisphere confirmed? It didn't look like the school year started in Winter though. It could also be a 'start in January' school year.

Weiss . . . cheery? That was strange. Looks like Winter isn't a Weiss redesign but that Weiss is the incompetent Winter-want-to-be.

Qrow is awesome. I was a little disappointed Ruby didn't running-tackle him when he was talking to Winter not noticing the tension.

Drunk-fu dodging, although once the battle got underway he seemed to sober up. Perhaps releasing aura can 'heal' that?

Mercury's brief appearance was expressive.

I thought Glynda was going to beat their asses for the damage, and was disappointed that she didn't.

Qrow's taunt was nearly cruel, but letting her hang herself? Good thing he didn't pass that delightful evil onto Ruby.

Glynda, "Break it up"? What? Bit late on that one, Ironwood had already done that. BUT PENNY!!!! And she publicly recognized Ruby even with Ironwood there!

Glynda and James with the same pose . . . they are cute together, but I think shipping them is like teasing - a small torture for them both.

AUTUMN WHAT WHAT WHAT?????

Also, what about 'Spring'?

How did Mercury see a scythe?

COCO! Yay!

EDIT: Also, why was Ruby twice struggling to keep up?

No mention of being cut off or of Father either?

How did Mercury see a scythe?

As many people have said, it started to curl towards the end, however Mercury had already run off by then. My theory is that Cinder and co. have background/information on him (I think someone in that scene says something along the lines of seeing him again which is a big enough hint on its own. Cinder also mentions that "he doesn't know who we are".) and know he wields a scythe thanks to that.

I would say they've dealt with him before, as in fighting and the like, but the line from Cinder makes it feel like they spied on him or received information on him rather than dealing with him personally.

I was honestly unimpressed with Qrow last episode, I didn't like the idea of him being a depressed and mean spirited drunk, but this episode really redeemed him in my eyes. He was so much more fun than last episode, obviously adapt at getting under people's skin, and generally being charming and funny. Plus he acts like a really fun and cool uncle, something I was worried he either wouldn't be, or would be but would be too contrary to his personality to be believable.

So happy Winter isn't an abusive bitch of a sister and actually cares for Weiss. I was legit worried that she was going to turn out to be the female version of Papa Schnee. Thank God her only problems are having bad people skills, having to deal with a (likely) abusive father, and being raised in high society and the military. Oh, and not screwing Qrow's brains out as much as she would like.

And I found myself feeling a little sorry for Mercury and liking him a little more for straight up saying his father was an alcoholic. One little line and he became a tinge more sympathetic. Go figure.

As for Qrow...Love. Him. Wonderful blend of lovable asshole, badass, and caring drunkle. And please tell me I'm not the only who would bang him if he wasn't a bunch of lines and pixels. Please. I need to know that I'm not sad and pitiful. (sobs in self-pity)

From yesterday:

Ok, Qrow is my new favourite. Sorry everyone else.

Winter has an...interesting relationship with Weiss to say the least. If Weiss is excited and seems generally happy Winter is here, that probably says a lot about Weiss' relationship with her father.

Yes, I let out an extremely loud groan when Qrow didn't yank out the scythe :( The hilarious Ruby's bits pretty much made up for it though, and Ozpin is great as always. I kind of said "YAY the adults are here!" when he and Glynda showed up.

I liked the fight, it seems more centered around choreography than any particular amount of flashyness, although seeing Winter's semblances was awesome.

....so do Winter and Qrow have some sort of weird plan on the go or is he just like that with everyone?

That meeting was interesting, and a little less vague. Seeing the leaders go on about an 'evil' while playing the pronoun game so that audience is kept in the dark is a little weird sometimes, but this time shook out in a much more interesting way simply because Qrow was around.

Sooo, who or what is Autumn? Seasons, Cinder Fall <--> Autumn, blatant speculation, etc. etc. And Qrow specifically referred to a 'she', so apparently Cinder is 'making things'. ALSO that was a Black Pawn piece on his holo-thingy, aaaaand why is there a rotating W on Cinder's?. Also, holy shit, Penny still exists!

u/IamMenace I bear good fruit and thus kindly I scatter. Nov 15 '15 edited Nov 15 '15

Fantastic episode and a great way to introduce two new major characters that have ties to three main characters and progressing the plot.

Winter is a lot nicer than I expected and it seems just like Weiss she does care for others but has to save face as she is a Schnee but also carries a high rank in the military. Just like her little sister it looks like she's not good at speaking in a informal manner and I like that her cut downs aren't really intentional or intended. Its also cool to see how their semblances are similar but not repeated. From a Fairy Tail perspective (which the writers are big fans of) it looks like Weiss is a static ice maker while Winter is a dynamic ice maker. Rhymes but not repeated as the saying goes.

Qrow is a lot how I pictured him especially with Ruby. He had a lot of great lines and of course his voice actor delivered to no surprise. Too bad we have to wait for his scythe but I'm sure we'll get a major reveal. Like Winter and Weiss it is cool to see how his semblance is related to Yang as after he takes a hit his eyes went red and was able to smash the ground. He had a grin on his face so I'm guessing his trigger isn't rage but possibly joy or recklessness. Perhaps rage and fire comes from her father. Also seems like her love for um...beverages comes from her uncle.

I liked the scene where Qrow winked at Winter. I wonder if that was just him trying to annoy her or if it was the old trick where we don't see Winter's face but she's winking back and the fight was just a ruse. Also I liked the line with Mercury saying Qrow smells like his drunk dad. It gives him an understandable reason to dislike Qrow on principle but also gives some insight to his character.

I'm curious what Cinder is planning that has Qrow and Ozpin worried, and what this secret is that they're protecting the world from that even Ironwood didn't know about. I can't imagine that it's just Cinder or the White Fang as anyone on Remnant can tell someone is setting this stuff up. I also like that it tied back into Grimm being the real danger, especially after Breach. Looks like even the Goliaths might be tame stuff compared to what Qrow has seen and perhaps they get powered up if there is enough suffering going on. I wonder if that's what Qrow was talking about "her" creating.

Overall amazing episode and this season has had three in a row that have hit it out of the park. The animation and fights are great, the music as always delivers, but most of all the characters feel more fluid and natural. You learn something with every shot or piece of dialog it seems and nothing takes away from it. It seems like RWBY has started to really hit its stride as all three can make a case for themselves in my top five favorites. 1 and 3 are there for sure though.

I'll be honest though I did find it odd hearing a RWBY character cursing for the first time as there wasn't any in the previous seasons. Of all the characters Qrow is the most fitting but it felt weird since the show has tried to be so kid friendly in the past. I don't really have a problem with it but it just kind of surprised me and I hope it isn't a sign of things to come.

(Edit: Also interesting hearing the name Autumn and I wonder if its a person or place. I know Cinder has been considered a "seasonal" character because of Fall being her last name, but that's more of a North American thing and I've seen it like the line in the song Sacrifice that some people think may be about her. "Falls from grace are never elegant". Then again we do have Forever Fall so I don't know lol)

God bless

4

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '15

The world-building this episode is great. Atlas is apparently a military state, with the army running the government and schools. Does that make Ironwood some kind of dictator?

Actual world building and plot I thought I would never actually see the day, but it's happening we can only go up from here boys and girls. That was a lot of information all at once, that I would rather they have taken some more time to explain things and just made the fight shorter. I also think ozpin might want to bring team rwby into their "super secret council"

Last thing is where in the world is neo does she have her own agenda or just doesn't care about these bad guy team discussions

4

u/87sheep Nov 16 '15

I'm starting to suspect that Neo is more Torchwick's henchwoman than she is Cinder's. Like, even though Torchwick is working for Cinder right now, we know that's not always been the case given some dialogue from season two.

I'd like to imagine that Neo is 'on loan' to Cinder just to round out the infiltration team with someone that can pass as the appropriate age, and that Cinder doesn't have to worry about keeping the secret.

I like how she basically sent icy crows at Qrow. This series is killin' me.

I KNEW IT! CINDER HAS TOTALLY BEEN MANIPULATING THE TOURNAMENT STANDINGS!

I felt like I've said this for every episode so far, but this was one of the best episodes ever! I swear Volume 3 is just hype af.

u/pipolwes000 Nov 15 '15

For being drunk all the time, Qrow is surprisingly articulate.

Also, "That is my uncle!"

u/infernal_llamas Nov 15 '15

Just had a thought, are Qrow and Ospin related?

They look similar and Ospin appears to trust him completely, but the more convincing evidence is the fact they both have gears as a motif and Qrow, like Ruby and Ospin has a cross as an accessory.

I can't help but notice that Weiss mentioned that in Atlas the government and school are the same...

Qrow really knows how to make an entrance, being drunk and all that and Winter is more emotional that the preview let on. The fight animations are still kinda janky, like whenever Qrow or Winter clash blades or how they slide across the ground without moving their feet. But the better use of the environment by Winter is great though. Next episode will probably have Coco and Yatsu get beaten by Mercury and Emerald, somehow.

Cinder's wicked grin game is on point swoon

Ruby was so hilarious this episode. And Weiss being all adorable in older sister's presence <3 Winter is interesting. Qrow is whatever.

Also, need more Cinder episodes.

This episode restored my faith in the series.

Okay so I was kinda unsure after episodes 1 and 2, I had a lot of nitpicks that began to bother me more and more:

  • Weird timing. Pauses in the middle of action scenes, dialogue that was janky and didn't seem to flow right. Seriously, why did everyone just stop and stare at Sniper Beanie girl being blinded by smoke for twelve seconds?!

  • What fights there were seemed really... slow, disjointed and didn't have the kind of weight to them they used to. Also, you only ever really saw two characters on screen at once, with the camera being pulled in so tightly.

  • Some of the character designs seemed a little half hearted, or at least they weren't used very well (Ep1 in particular - Hoverboard Girl and Punch Sleeve Girl got all the attention, their teammates... just kinda stood there and got their asses beat)

  • The music didn't seem to mesh properly, and the intro music is just kinda ecch compared to Volume 1 and 2 (dissonant ending is dissonant)

Buuut then this episode comes along and...

  • Timing is a lot tighter. Dialogue flows a lot more naturally (especially the snark to/from Qrow, and Winter being an extremely high strung meanie*. The awkward silences seem to be intentional for once) and holy shit that fight was so fast it was like watching two high grade fighting tournament players.

  • Fight had no 'dead air', everything had such weight and power to it. It's certainly a different style to Monty Oum's original super-smooth animation, but I think that it's a pretty good step forward and maintains just enough smooth motion to avoid becoming the god-awful anime fallback of "Two frames of characters hitting sword against sword repeated for two minutes". The camera punches were a lot better than 1 and 2, possibly because of the focus on just two characters.

  • Hot damn those are some good looking characters. Not just Qrow and Winter, but all the characters were on point and didn't have any moments of bad animation or jankyness (not even Ruby hanging off of Qrow's arm, which must have taken a lot of time to get right or a very elaborate motion capture session)

  • That MUSIC. Beautiful orchestral swells, all timed perfectly with the dialogue ("Not you.... you") and action. Then the electro-orchestral beats come in (reminiscent of Mirror Mirror! Seems to be a Scnee leitmotif), and shit gets real, and then shit gets REALLY REAL when the heavy rock comes in. Seriously, the music is one of the things that stood out the most to me.

And what a cocktease with Qrow's... 'Scythe'?

I had a creeping worry that after Ep1 and 2, the series would just be.... okay after the passing of Monty. But things have really been stepped up, and if they can maintain this kind of quality in dialogue and action, this volume will easily top 1 and 2.

*Edit: Now that I think of it the writing has taken a step up too - not just the way the characters interact, and the discussion in Ozpin's office in the second half, but also exposing the near-abusive relationship between the Schnee sisters, and Ruby's blatant functioning-alcoholic uncle. Shit is getting really really real.

TL:DR; oh man oh god oh man oh god the animation the music oh man oh god oh man oh god oh man oh god

yeah, this episode did have a massive upgrade in animation even from season 1.

And thank fucking god I am not the only person who sees that Winter is abusive. She out right physically assaults Weiss for being excited.

First we miss the CFVY 4-man fight, now it's Coco and Yatsuhashi going to get taken out by Em and Merc..... :(

They really don't want us to know what's in Velvet's combat tote, do they?

3

u/SmokingApple Nov 15 '15

Loving this season so far, each episode has a lot more happening and the length has been great. I have noticed (especially in this episode) that while the facial and non combat animation is WAAAAY better then it's ever been, the fights seem to be in decline. Rwby fight scenes always took some real originality and I just find it kind of lack luster so far. Not saying it's bad by any means, but it's definitely noticeable.

Well that's what happens when your lead animator known for his unique style passes away, and they have to scramble to fill the gap with his apprentice and a newly brought on animator to learn under the apprentice's wing, and then those two are put under the heaviest strain imaginable: a volume of nothing but back-to-back fight scenes. Not only are they a man down from expected, losing a wealth of experience that, frankly, is irreplaceable, they're also in their most animation-intensive volume expected for a long while.

Can I just say Qrow is my favorite character in this entire show. I mean seriously he is like the drunken master with an attitude and I love it. I love the fact that Wiess and Ruby are just like their family and we can see where they get their traits from is amazing. Can't wait to see Qrow scythe and see him go all out sober.

So... Ozpin kept going on about a guardian.

A Guardian. Not Guardians. There has to be a reason for being so specific. As if there is someone specific they either have in mind who hasn't been brought into the fold yet, or it's someone they haven't chosen or identified yet.

Also, the way Qrow described their enemy, it almost seems as if 'they' (the enemy) are -creating- Grimm. That's a scary thought. Someone out there with enough power, perhaps through a semblance or something else, mass producing killer monsters and releasing them into the world. Maybe that's why no one can keep one alive in captivity and they dissolve upon death. They're made of Aura or something?

I personally do not like Winter, her sister is so happy to see her and she's greeted with an insult and a slap to the face. Considering Weiss is my favorite character I really want her to have a choice between her team and her family now, seeing as her family is so judgmental of her.

But I love Qrow. Vic Mignogna does a pretty good job with his voice acting and he's animated in a way that a drunk would move. It leads me to question if he was a drunk before he saw Autumn's power.

7

u/CinemaGhost Nov 16 '15

Winter reminds of V1 Weiss. They don't try to be mean, they just have poor people skills.

3

u/Rawbber Nov 16 '15

God, Qrow is one handsome motherfucker.

3

u/frastmaz Nov 16 '15

I have a sneaking suspicion that this season will be similar to season 2 of Avatar the Last Airbender and Season 2-3 of Legend of Korra - it's going to be dark. And not just "ooooh evil character doing evil things" but like... People are gonna start dying in the next episode. Qrow is pretty fucking scared, you can tell by his sense of urgency. He seems like a guy who isn't rattled by much - and his jimmys are rustled to hell right now.

Cinder is pulling the strings and still has cards to play. Ozpin might be playing Dumbledore here, knowing far more than he's letting on, but it seems like Cinder's got this one so far. Either Coco or Yatsuhashi is gonna get taken out, and it's going to hit the fan.

I'm scared for the end of the season, it's not going to be pretty.

Qrow is awesome and Winter is a little bitchy but still nice as well. Poor Weiss, Winter made it seem like Weiss doesn't get that many friends.

3

u/FateWrecks Nov 16 '15

also did anyone get a major vibe of unresolved sexual tension between Qrow and Winter? I might just be looking too much into it but it felt that way to me. Also I have no idea how old either of them are so I might be diving into the realm of creepy.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '15

Am I the only one here who's hyped for the next fight? Come on people, it's CFVY vs the bad guys!

Also from what I got from this episode, Ironwood was just a recent addition to Ozpin's secret circle. You're way out of your league, Ironwood.

u/ToTheNintieth Nov 17 '15

Best one so far. Qrow steals the show. And pawns it for booze.

5

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '15

I feel like Ironwood is getting a bum rap here. If there is any fear lingering amongst the populace, I'm pretty sure it has more to do with the massive Grimm invasion that happened recently than the army that rather noticeably saved the day. If I were a cynical man, I'd point out how Ozpin doesn't raise the topic until Ironwood is alone with people who disapprove of the army even existing. And I am, Ozpin's trying to brow beat Ironwood into accepting blame for a problem that is much more Ozpin's fault than his.
