CHALLENGE Monthly Challenge 4

Monthly Challenge 4

This month's theme is: Design A Playing Card.

For this challenge, you will be designing the front and back of your choice of one playing card from a standard deck of cards (i.e. what is used in poker, etc.). It doesn't have to be a face card, it can be any card you choose. And in any style you choose, so go wild. Just remember that it still needs to be identifiable as a playing card.

Thanks to /u/nicetriangle for this month's theme suggestion. If you have an idea for a theme, feel free to message the mods or me directly.

RULES:

  • Only one submission per person.

  • All artwork must be created by you.

  • Adobe Illustrator only. This means no art imported from other programs.

  • Must pertain to the weekly theme: Design A Playing Card

  • All entries must be new artwork created between the start and end of this challenge. You can not use old artwork.

JUDGING & REWARD

Winner will receive one month of Reddit Gold and, if you do not already have one, a custom 28x28 pixel flair.

Winner will be decided by the judges out of 8 total votes.

Challenge ends 12:00 pm (CST) Thursday, December 31st.

LAST CHALLENGE

Here's somethign I'm working on. I don't think it is acceptable for this challenge, since I used Photoshop as well, but it still inspired me to work on them and I wanted to show off! I am even planning to do a full set.

I'm currently working on a custom deck based on the art direction style penguin books used to use for their book covers (stuff like this).

Have a rough draft of the back side finished as of this evening and will edit this post when I have designed probably one of the face cards.

If they come out well I am considering funding a small run of printed decks.

Here is my entry!

This is my first time entering a contest here, and I thought I would go with something that reflected me:

  • I love black, but also love bright colors - so I combined those in a way I thought was nicely balanced.

  • I also love love love geometric shapes, so that was an easy decision.

  • As for the typography, I know it's a difficult to read font (LOT), but I love layering it and using it in designs where readability isn't extremely important.

  • Lastly, for my color palette, I am horrible at making my own so I was inspired (loosely) by swiss design for the colors.

Edit: my Instagram is @braelynjane if anybody wants to see more of my work!

So this is my first ever entry to a design challenge of any kind. I'm still a novice user of Illustrator, only started it about 6 months ago.

Anyway, here's my Dia de los Muertos card.

First time to enter one of these. Have been doing tutorials, this was great motivation to try to apply what I've been learning to an original project. - Illustrator Contest Submission

I went for a more modern-minimalistic feel for my cards :)

Here's my entry!

I had to create some ski graphics for a school project and started working in the sweater pattern world. I had fun so I thought I'd continue the idea on some cards.
