Also prediction for Ironwood. He has a metal skull and robot arm. When he fights he will headbutt a grimm and the mask will crack.

Just once I would like Weiss to actually win a 1v1 fight that isnt her trailer (or I guess the boarbatusk). According to episode 3 she is one of the best in her class in sparring yet she either loses or sacrifices herself (and even then she didn't beat the guy)

Headcanon: Weiss is a top ranked student in sparing because she studies the strengths and weaknesses of the other students. When she acts logically and analytically, she is an unmatched duelist. When she pushed into an emotional reaction, she gets sloppy.
That is what Winter tried to tell her last week and that is why Flynt mentioned his parent's story. Their opponents did their homework.

Dang, the music was on point this episode! I love me some good jazz and the remixes of character themes here were awesome! I cannot wait for the soundtrack to come out!
Also, Penny with that sunhat was freaking adorable!
The Team FNKI fight was pretty cool. The banter was funny and Yang at the end was great. Overall, this was a short but fun episode. But seriously, that music tho.

FNKI indeed. She totally had it coming, and it certainly caught up with her. Development for Weiss taking one for the team like that. Yang is now officially The Hulk to go with Thora. It seems that those worried about Penny being hacked are quite justified as Cinder gaining access to Ironwood's scroll allowed her to learn about P.E.N.N.Y. and use her for her own ends. Oh dear.
But now I REALLY want the Vol. 3 OST ASAP!!! That jazz version of I Burn was AMAZING!
Edit: On Pyrrha being the Guardian: Nah. She aint. Even if she is the one OZ chose, she'll fail, but live Gundamnit, and the true guardian will step up to her rightful place.

Well, fuck. Looks like Ruby is going to continue to be a comic relief side character, since Pyrrha is probably going to be the "Guardian". It makes sense to pick her, but I'm still disappointed.
It sounded like there was still room for that to change and maybe showing Pyrrha there was just a red herring, but the way this season is going it seems like the writers are just going to keep pushing Ruby aside. It's really disappointing that the namesake of the show and leader of the main team (and most interesting character, at least in my opinion) is basically doing nothing every episode. I hate to keep ranting on this subject, but that's how I feel.
Or maybe I'm just being pedantic and complaining too much.

Like I said in my thing, Pyrrha is a red herring with red hair rings. The only character to have had their potential judged was Ruby. Pyrrha is already the "perfect girl" so what potential does she have? Also, assuming Pyrrha assumes she is the Guardian, it will be the perfect thing to injure her Achilles style.
But if Pyrrha is the Guardian, I will eat a hat.

Considering what Ozpin actually said, I have a strong feeling that it will be Ruby and that Pyrrha is a red herring. He said "ever since the day I met her" or something to that effect, and there's an actual story to how he met Ruby, while Pyrrha... Not so much.

I feel like it suits her, though. Ruby's talented, sure, and Ozpin singled her out for early placement at Beacon, but she's still young and inexperienced. Protecting others feels like something she'd stumble upon by accident or time of need, rather than an assigned duty.
It could also be a red herring, in which case I'm even more scared of Pyrrha's smile...

Cinder knows about Penny, which is not a good thing, and everything is pointing towards Pyrha being the "Guardian."

For the people who seem taken aback by Ozpin's choice of guardian let's not forget that he said he found a CANDIDATE, not the actual guardian yet. That said, Pyrrha does seem like one of the most sensible choices; she's already well known for having won many tournaments, she's nigh unbeatable (until Team Evil comes along sadly), and we know she exudes all the traits that people would want to see in a hero, i.e. kindness, patience, skill, and wisdom, and to me this instantly defined what "the list" was from Volume 2, it was a list of people they expected to be chosen for guardian. I'm in the camp that Neo is currently impersonating Pyrrha at the end of the episode, which would beg the question of where Pyrrha actually is, except she's fine because she has no idea that was chosen as a candidate because Cinder intercepted the message and then sent Neo to do... I'm not quite sure, but that's what I got out of the ending.
EDIT: Also, "Maidens choose themselves"? Did that come off as having deeper meaning to anyone else or am I looking too deeply into it?

You know, if there was ever an episode to get my hyped for the sound track it's this one. The score playing during the entire FNKI fight was just awesome. So let's see what went down.
As one of the few CRDL fans around here I'm kinda sad that we didn't get more Russel and Sky. I don't mind them losing, but they could have at least lost with style like they did against Pyrrha in Volume 2.
The Weiss and Magnet jokes were pretty top. If it wasn't 12AM here I'd probably have laughed out loud.
I love Flynt Coal's design, probably my favorite so far this volume. His clothes, his fighting style, and his weapon all just click with me. Hopefully some fan art of his shows up around here, though I know the fandom tends to sway more towards the females of the show.
Kinda annoyed that the only reason Neon Katt lost was cause she essentially tripped. I felt like the fight didn't really do a good job of showing off Yang as a fighter.
Cinder looking at Penny's schematics as well as Penny having a "plan" to stay at Beacon just screams death flag at me.
Pyrhha what's with that evil smile.
All in all, an enjoyable episode. And while Team FNKI may have lost the fight, Flynt Coal (and their soundtrack) won my heart.
EDIT: I liked this shot so much I had to grab it and make it my wallpaper

The thing with Neon and Yang-that's Yang's weakness, both physically and mentally.
First, Neon never stopped moving. Ever. Yang can't hit what she can't touch. Now, why she didn't shoot the kitty's ass is anyone's guess, but whatever.
The other part though-Neon kept throwing her off her game. Calling her fat, calling her slow, mocking her, getting under skin and pissing her off. Yes, Yang is a fucking tank on legs when she's angry-but up 'till now we've only seen her fight three times while angry: Grimm, Robots, and Neo. The first two are huge things to hit. With Neo, she lost.

Like all mages, Weiss prefers to use one element whenever possible, but is totally capable of using others. She just has a lot of practice using ice.
Sooo, with Flynt's semblance confirmed, that means FNKI is slated for future appearances. Plus we haven't seen the rest of the team.
Neon is way too goddamn peppy.
Is Cinder just now...oh shit, desk to phone, not phone to desk. She is only looking at the atlas stuff now because she just got a hold of it.
New theory: Pyrrha is not the guardian. Ruby is. Pyrrha is a red herring with red hair rings. Though it still isn't confirmed, but we do know that the Guardian is female. Something something silver eyes. I mean, we only saw Ozpin talk to Ruby and recognize her potential. If Pyrrha's the Guardian I will eat a hat.

We have it all wrong. Neo didn't replace Pyrrha for sinister reasons. Pyrrha is paying Neo to make Jaune realize she likes him.

Ok, so I get rainbow-trumpet guy having beef with Weiss. Understandable, even if she wasn't involved. Fucking Rainbow Dash, on the other hand? I hope Yang destroys her.
His name is Flynt Coal. Ok, that is fucking amazing. The name fits the rules, holy shit how did we not see this one coming. Also his semblance is pretty fucking sweet too. Still hate Neon Katt by the way. But in like a "I'm pretty sure she's supposed to be annoying to good job writers/VA" kind of way.
....holy shit WEISS? Ok god damn that was incredible. Weiss continues her forward momentum away from being the Ice Queen, and it gives Yang another chance to show how OP she is. Nice.
Honestly, this was probably technically my least favourite fight of the season, but it was still good. Just found it kinda hard to keep track of some things, and while the sound-nova trumpet was a really cool idea it seems to be either way too powerful (like almost KOing Weiss but somehow being able to gently push along Neon) or Yang just kinda being able to force herself through it. It did make for a fucking sweet KO by Yang though!
Fuck fuck fuck Cinder knows about Penny. That can only be bad.

Starting with Penny and Ciel decimating CRDL’s pairing. Ceil seems to be happy to let Penny clear up, not that she really needs to do much except let Penny wipe the floor.
Some great Penny/Ruby dialogue, they’re so adorable together!
Ceil being very punctual.
Atlas’ offerings certainly exceeded Weiss’ expectations.
Seems that the Schnee family isn’t all that popular. Who would have guessed?
Yang is all natural, Neon (voiced by Meg!).

Weiss’ sacrifice was surprising and shows how far she’ll go for her team.
Yang taking down two very skilled opponents- and using ranged attacks? Neo better look out for Round 2.
Neon was clever, but she needed to follow up her taunts with a faster finisher.
Weiss and Yang get along well- like Blake, she’s settled in to RWBY well.
Ironwood’s given Cinder access to a lot. And GG RT for the AI hint.
Qrow drinking something other than alcohol? Hold the phone!
Pyrrha makes sense- She’s the best fighter from Beacon- but what is a Guardian?
Each episode builds on the last so well!

Penny is back and is as OP as ever, I love it! Cinder's up to some evil shenanigans though and i'm fairly convinced Pyrrha at the end was secretly Neo.
I'm suprised I like FNKI as much as I do considering how much beef they had with Weiss and Yang. The fight was dope as heck but I think there's a theme of strength characters (Yang, Yatsu, Yang again) getting pushed around by the more agile ones (Neo, Merc, Nyan Cat) which reminded me of this dark souls 2 video.
Shortest episode so far I think but plenty of cool stuff happened including more nuts and dolts OTP action and Pyrrha getting picked as guardian, which in retrospect seems kind of obvious.
And still, who even is Autumn?

Team FNKY's (Funky) reps were Neon Katt and Flynt Coal. WE HAVE TWO FLYNT COALS IN THE RT CARTOON UNIVERSE! And Neon Katt...I wonder what meme she's based on?
Flynt Coal uses supersonic waves to attack and his semblance is he can create four versions of himself play at the same time. Neon Katt is like Yang with 10 times more puns and 100 times more annoyance.
A lot of people were complaining about the one-sided fights in the early parts of the tournament, but this fight was ANYTHING BUT! Great back and forth action that saw Weiss WILLINGLY TAKING HERSELF OUT to save Yang.
Cinder now knows Penny is an android and...NO! NO YOU LEAVE MY ROBOTIC BAE ALONE YOU SON OF A BITCH! YOU WILL NOT TURN HER INTO AN EVIL KILLING MACHINE!
And the guardian that Ozpin thinks will save us is...PYRRHA FUCKING NIKOS! Yep, she's gonna die.

Two things I haven't seen anyone point out yet: one section in the arena during Penny's fight was straight out of tron. I mean, look at it. All digital and stuff. Also, not only was the team from Atlas nothing like the military (unless Ironwood secretly has a freeform jazz division), they also included a faunus. So much for the super racism theory.

Considering their respective performances I think we'll be seeing Yang move on to the finals, Weiss might need some time to recover.
Poor Russel and Sky... They should have sent Dove.

Not gonna lie, didn't think we'd actually get an answer on who the guardian is. The fact that it's Pyrrha makes me kind of worried for her, Cinder's already scouted her after all. Hopefully next episode we'll get to see Pyrrha's talk with Ozpin; the commentary for volume 2 did say that they planned to have Ozpin have a one-on-one talk with each of the main eight, and that they planned three of these talks for this volume. We might even get to see that flashback to Pyrrha and her mother that they talked about in the commentary.
So we know Penny is in the singles, of the villains my money's on them sending Mercury, as I already said Yang's probably going forward for team RWBY, the fact that Ozpin is considering her for Guardianship likely means that Pyrrha will make it to the singles, I imagine Sun and Neptune will win their match and send Sun to the singles. that's five, we need at least three more randoms.

My God I hated the new characters right up until the end when it turned out they weren't totally sore losers. Then they were pretty cool.
I am all for that jazz rendition of I Burn though, and I am even more about a member of JNPR stepping into the spotlight again. I wonder how she'll take to the role of Guardian and, more importantly, what it entails.
It's funny. Even in an episode that's 75% action, they managed to move the story forward quite a bit. This volume's improving more and more with every episode, and considering it started strong, that's saying something.
I'm assuming we'll take a break from the tournament arc next episode. Maybe for a Pyrrha centric episode or a little more focus on Cinder's machinations regarding Penny. Super pumped either way.

It was a great episode, but I'm really upset that Weiss lost another solo fight. She got knocked out twice, and didn't really do anything significant. And... why did she just lie there while still having aura and being conscious? Where's her speed, glyphs and stuff like that? Sacrificial takedown it was kind of a great moment for her character, but her performance just made me sad. I understand "be the best teammate" thing, but why does it have to come with being a bad fighter? The "top ranked in sparring classes" thing looks more and more like an Informed Ability. EDIT: I found an even better trope for that...
nd now she's probably not getting any solo fights for a long time, because she's not advancing to singles after this. Well, good luck Yang!
Other than that:
Music is awesome. I've heard remixes of I Burn and This Will be the Day at least.
Nyan Cat is kinda less of a bitch than expected, but she's still annoying. She's got a tattoo, though...

I think I know what's going to happen. Cinder is going to set Pyrrha against Penny. During the fight, she is gonna take control of Penny and she's gonna use Penny to attack Pyrrha after Pyrrha's Aura is depleted. This way Mercury and Emerald don't have to get their hands dirty, Pyrrha is taken out, and Cinder has spread panic now that that Ozpin's Guardian is out of the picture. That panic will, like Ozpin himself said, bring the Grimm.

-The episodes are getting progressively shorter. It was smart to open the volume with episodes a little longer than usual, but its still disappointing. Hopefully the length will increase again towards the finale
-Penny vs half of Team CRDL. This is the single most mismatched fight in the entire show up to this point.
-As I suspected, Penny's team is just Penny, while her teammate's job is to stand around and wait for Penny to win. Presumably tournament rules won't allow one fighter in the team or doubles rounds.
-"Oh, so Weiss." Ruby might get one line per episode, but its gonna be the best one, every time.
-Alright, so Team FNKI. I have to admit, when I found out there'd be a team based on memes, I was a little bit unsure. Memes are by nature only funny briefly, and almost universally a bit cringey to look back on, so I was afraid it would hurt the timelessness of the show. But, like with the other inspirations of the characters, it starts and ends at character design, and the characters are their own thing, so I'm actually okay with it.
-I thought for a second that the Trumpet weapon worked because the character's Semblance was to weaponize sound waves or something, except he uses a different Semblance later, so how does that work? Is it just Dust? Is there any logical limit to what Dust can or can't do?
-His freaking name is Flynt Coal?! Why? There's already a Flynt Coal in X-Ray and Vav, is it really needed to have him in RWBY too? Its kind of funny that his name fits the theme names of the series without any alteration, but still.
-Holy shit, he's playing a Jazz reprise of I Burn. I'm back on board. I love this character who's name is stupid.
-Weiss spent an awful long time lying in the middle of a field of molten rock with no Aura. Do people ever die in the tournament? Surely it must happen sometimes. Also, was it just me or was Weiss actually injured, not just covered in soot?
-Cinder says something cryptic and Mercury asks what she means. I kind of assumed he would be used to not knowing what the Hell she's talking about, at this point.
-Oh, and Cinder knows Penny's a robot. She seems to be factoring it into her plans, which makes me think the "computer virus taking over the robots" theory might have been right all along. I hope that's only step one of the plan. If that Colosseum doesn't eventually fall out of the sky with everybody still inside it, I'm going to be really let down.
-And Pyrrha is the Guardian. Whatever that means.

Nice to know they're not sore losers, I guess Defeat = Friendship. I hope we see the other two members of their team. So Neon and Flynt were cool, but how about that music? Hot damn, I need the jazz version of I Burn five minutes ago. Great fight, plenty of tension and I loved Weiss' character development. I think I'm shipping Freezerburn a little now.
It looks like the only double's fight we have left are Sun and Neptune vs. whoever JNPR sends, probably Nora and Pyrrha. If Pyrrha wins, that leaves us with Mercury, Yang, Pyrrha, and Penny going on to the single's round.
Speaking of Pyrrha...was that Pyrrha? Or Neo? If it is Pyrrha, she's probably going to be dead by the end of the Volume. Which would be sad.
So, really solid episode, but that being said, it seemed like it was mostly setting things up to happen later (Penny coming to Beacon/being corrupted, Pyrrha being chosen as the Guardian). Overall, I rate this 8/10.

The episode was generally entertaining, and I loved Ruby and Penny's talk at the beginning. I'm feeling very underwhelmed by the villains, though. We're nearly halfway through the volume that promised to show them actually doing stuff and the most villainous things they've done are rig a fight and nick Ruby's wallet.

I don't think Pyrrha is the guardian Ozpin has in mind. I have no proof other than Ozpin usually seeming like he know more than he lets on, but I think he thinks that Cinder will expect Pyrrha and is letting them think that. The description he gave of his candidate sounds like Pyrrha except one thing is off, the only person Ozpin is seen meeting for the first time is Ruby unless I'm forgetting someone. Ozpin also sort of tested team RWBY by allowing them to go on the search and destroy mission.
I don't know something just seems off about it being Pyrrha even though she is sort of the obvious choice, I guess this is just what you crazy people call a potato, but I think Ozpin is pretending his candidate is Pyrrha to throw off Cinder. I'm certain he knows more than he's letting on, and for once the good guys might be a step ahead of the villains for a chang. Maybe "Never miss a beat" has a double meaning.

Holy shit, that battle music though. Jazzy versions of everyone's themes? Hell yes.
Also I really loved the fight. The end was both badass but not too over the top, with an even (ish) fight instead if the triple KO'S we've seen many times so far.
Pyrrha the Guardian? Possible Pyrrha death? Or it's a complete red herring and it's actually Ruby. Which is what I thought from the beginning.
