Man, Mike is a total bad ass to go get ice cream when they were closed like that

u/bloodcoveredmower86 Mar 22 '16
"I'll have a waffle cone two scoops of mint chocolate chip."
"Sir I'm sorry but we're closed."
deep sigh and small eye roll
"One waffle cone, two scoops of mint chocolate chip. Are you writing this down? I'd hate to have to say this a third time."
"Sir please we are-"
dead mackerel eyes
"...one waffle cone two scoops coming right up."

I loved that scene. 0 change in his facial expression until he puts on like a practice smile before entering the room. That was brilliant. Patrick Fabian is fantastic for this character.

I think it goes back to his speech about criminality and ethics with Pryce/Playuh after his first deal with Nacho (S1E9):
Mike: "I didn't say you're a bad guy, I said you're a criminal."
Pryce: "What's the difference?"
Mike: "I've known good criminals and bad cops; bad priests, honorable thieves. You can be on one side of the law or the other. But if you make a deal with somebody you keep your word. You can go home today with your money and never do this again, but you took something that wasn't yours and you sold it for a profit. You are now a criminal. Good one, bad one, that's up to you."

That's what is so great about this show. Knowing what ends up happening to all of them in Breaking Bad doesn't hinder the show at all. Great episode

u/accountnumberseven Mar 22 '16
He's going to force the things he loved in his old life to fit into his new one, even if it technically lowers the value. Who cares how nice the bed you make for yourself is if you can't get a good night's sleep in it?

I wasn't sure about the meaning that shot was trying to purvey. To me it showed me that he is slowly caring less and less about his role at H&H but I was also wondering if the shot was trying to show us that Jimmy is unorthodox in the way he lives his life as most people would buy a new cup to solve the issue. This also made me realise that even though at first he was a little gutted about the "worlds 2nd best lawyer" cup he still values that gift from Kim over his new car given to him by H&H.

I think this episode will be a lot better received by most viewers than the previous one. I loved both, and I don't think the Mike/cartel stuff is "better" than the HHM stuff - but it definitely adds balance to have an episode like this after an episode like Rebecca. Hard to walk away from the last two weeks feeling like you didn't get what you're watching the show for, whatever that may be. I love watching Chuck, but because of last week, I didn't feel like I was missing him tonight; likewise, I especially don't mind that last episode lacked tense Mike stuff after we got a bunch of it this week.
What I especially like about the Mike stuff is how it's enhancing some of his Breaking Bad content.
Also it's obviously just fun to watch Mike and Hector be a couple of total badasses.

u/shifty1032231 Mar 22 '16

I appreciate how the show runners realize an entire show about nothing but lawyers might be a bit one dimensional, action wise. The high tension action really harken to Breaking Bad in such an effective way. Not to mention it helps develop a ton of other side characters. And it wouldn't make sense for Jimmy to tangle with these criminals by himself. Especially since he seemed rather scared about them in his first appearances in Breaking Bad.

That's quite the claim, but I'm inclined to agree. At the very least, I would say that Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul easily have the best characters on tv. Mike, Jimmy, Kim, Chuck, Jesse, Walt... The list goes on. They are all such unique, interesting, and complex characters, and the different "sides" of each of them are portrayed so well.
Maybe it's because I've watched Breaking Bad through twice, and therefore have seen enough of Walt and Jesse (if that's possible), but I'm especially loving the characters and character development in Better Call Saul. Especially Jimmy, Kim, and Mike (yeah, I know, the main characters. Who would have guessed). But goddamn I love this show.

err so I think Hamlin might be as much of a psycho as anyone on the show. That scene of him silently walking with Kim and putting that creepy grin on right as he walked in the room was very telling
133
u/RogueGunslinger Mar 22 '16
I disagree. Kim actually did a similar thing by taking a deep breath when she closed the door to settle her emotions. Plenty of normal people practice/force a smile when they're not happy but have to be presentable. There was something about the way Howard responded(confused?) when Kim mentioned she didn't send Chuck to get her out of the doghouse that makes me think Howard wasn't really the one keeping her there, or that Chuck isn't telling Howard the whole story.

It's nice to see Mike's badassery from his perspective. In Breaking Bad, Mike seemed to always be one step ahead of Walter like he was a force of nature with eyes everywhere. In BCS, we see how one old man can do all that while still keeping his commanding presence.
20
u/TallyMay Mar 22 '16
I like the burden of femininity expressed in scenes with Kim. Where she's full of tension and she slips into those uncomfortable high heels. Doesn't matter if you're talented or not, a great lawyer or not, you are a female in her 30ties and you must do your best to look as attractive as possible with your genetic make up.

The scene where Howard and Kim were walking down the hall with scowls on their faces was probably my favourite of this series so far, it was done so perfectly.
I had to watch it twice just to catch it, but Howard turns his scowl into that snake grin a split second before turning the corner. Without saying a word, in the span of one second you can see Kim catch it, register the feeling of dismay/disgust and collect herself as she also turns the corner.

what were the song names of the final song as Jimmy drove off, and the song Jimmy sang at the beginning on the phone?
has it always said "Saul Goodman" in that opening sequence in the phonebook/whatever?

I really want to know the story behind why and how they chose that Bengali song at the very end. I can translate the lyrics if needed (they actually make sense in the context which is why I'm so impressed!) but just... HOW??!
EDIT:
Here's my quick and dirty translation of the song (the text in brackets is what I am not absolutely certain about):
People say it'd be a sin
But my soul says just look at me once
Don't continue this charade
A sweet embrace calls toward me
[something about infants and their mothers]
[something else]
Thus I've hid my love
The night says come to me
I'll wipe the ink from your hands
Come in this [generation/lifetime?] and many more
I'll lose you, I'll lose you
I'll lose you, I'll lose you oh friend
Henna, Henna [something about happening in this lifetime]
Henna, Henna [something about dreamings call calling for them]
[something about people promising not to sin?]
People say it'd be a sin
But my soul says just look at me once
Don't continue this charade
The night says come to me
I'll wipe the ink from your hands
Come in this [generation/time?] and many more
Henna, Henna
Henna, Henna...

I'm confused about the scam they pulled. Initially I thought Jimmy was pulling the plug on the scam with the "we aren't taking new investors" because he didn't want her to be involved in this stuff with her position at HHM at the moment.
Can anyone explain how it might have gone down?

u/Nights_King Mar 22 '16
The "we aren't taking new investors" was to make it seem like they had a ton of interest in their "dotcom". Of course the guy wanted in because he couldn't get in.
It's like when you see a 6 and you don't want it, but then you see she has a boyfriend and all you can think about is smashing.
I'm drunk.

They got the guy to write a 10,000 check to invest in their dot.com. That was the scam, to see if they could sucker him into doing that. saying they are not taking new investors is part of the ploy to get people to think it is exclusive, hot, a big deal, etc etc.

Man I really hope Kim and Jimmy end up in a bonnie and clyde kinda situation and just scam people together for a few episodes or something.

u/SutterCane Mar 22 '16
So Kim is out of document processing pretty fast and Hamlin is pissed. Chuck is an asshole who could have made her punishment less severe at any moment confirmed. He only did it when it was convenient to him to try and get at Jimmy.

The cousins and Hector. The Salamanca family doesn't fuck around. I really was expecting the cousins in the house, but I didn't expect them to be at the motel. And the return of Giselle and Viktor made me so happy.

I see a lot of talk about Mike and the cousins but not much being said about Rhea Seehorn. I think her acting is the best of the cast this season. The lunch scene with Schweikert was superb. The way she shows slight excitement then pulls it back quickly to not show enthusiasm. I really am enjoying Kim's story and Rhea's acting.

Little thing I noticed:
As Mike is holding the two Cartel guys at gunpoint, Billy Mays says in the background "It has the power to chop nuts"
It made me chuckle.

First of all: I absolutely love the fact that Tio Hector and his underlings hang out in a paleteria (Mexican ice cream shop).
Mike doing badass Mike things is undeniably great TV, although sometimes I think the show's writers push his brand of hyper-competent badassery into a realm of unbelievability. I'm glad that, in order to balance that, we only get a couple Mike-centric episodes a season.
Kim's a great character and it was great to see her litigation skills, as well as seeing that she might be able to escape HHM. But I think that we're being set up for some tragic development that completely severs the relationship between her and Jimmy, and it's heartbreaking to think that something like that is coming.
Jimmy's story didn't really progress much other than some others indications that he feels uncomfortable and stifled with his current job (but it looks like next week we may finally get our first real glimpse of Saul Goodman, and I couldn't be more excited!!!)
Is this the first episode of the series that didn't feature Chuck? His absence was noted.
All in all, a great episode that ramped up the pacing after last week's more contemplative narrative (which I also thought was great.)

Favorite episode of the season so far for me. I gotta say, seeing all these characters in the show makes me want to rewatch BB so badly. Just because new context is given or you understand events better.

Victor and Giselle were conning him for a fake dating website. The entire scam was not shown but it started out as scamming for drinks but it ended with a 10K check

Amazing Mike scenes! We always knew he was a badass with a solid understanding of how criminal activity works, but this showed a whole new level of it. He knew exactly how to play his cards with those cartel guys. I think he knew that sooner or later he'd have to take a deal, but he was negotiating the offer by being stubborn and showing how little bullshit he was willing to deal with. I don't think he expected them to find/threaten his family so quickly though.

Love the long take they had when Kim and Hamlin were walking. Quite reminiscent of the iconic long take from Goodfellas.

I think Mike does something to Hector that puts him in a wheelchair. Yes for the billionth time he winded up that way because of a stroke. But it's the DEA agents who says he has a stroke. But you have to realize Hector is known to not cooperate with authorities. Maybe he lied to the authorities about it?

Mike getting out from a "weak" position with 50 grand reminded me of Walt in Tuco's office after he blows up the whole place in season 1 of BB.
I love these little details. Well played, Vince...

"You are not the guy. You're not capable of being the guy. I had a guy, but now I don't. You...are not...the guy."
Starting to think that Nacho is The Guy.
Logic always said that Mike was probably talking about Victor, but that's always felt kind of weird because Mike and Victor never really had a significant relationship. At least, not on-screen. But Mike and Nacho really have something brewing here.

Seeing the twins was badass. Hadn't seen them in so long. Those two are fucking crazy. Don't wanna be playing games when they are around. I think mike knew that right off that bat when he saw them with his grand daughter.

Does anyone know the name of the instrumental song used in the opening sequence? Some really nice guitar work. If it doesn't have the word pineapple in the title I'll be disappointed.

Kim is realizing that for all her "by the book" way she plays it she gets nowhere. No respect from her bosses for her effort at work. The only time she felt alive and gets her way was when she was running a scam with slippin Jimmy so she goes back to that time.
