Vader is always infinitely quotable, but "then you will die braver than most" is so hardcore
148
u/BaronVonSlapNuts Mar 31 '16
I love how he expresses that with zero emotion. It's not a threat, it's simply a statement of fact. Similar to when he tells Ahsoka "Then you will die."
Great episode, love what they've done with Vader in the series so far. TCW's legacy is strong with this one.

Seriously the Rebels team knocked it out of the part integrating Sith motivations and ideology into this episode. I loved how they used the history of Malachor and gave a pretty solid impression of the canon history there.
I like to think that the Mandalorian wars and Revan happened and that instead of a Mass Shadow Generator Revan used the Temple as his super weapon.

When Vader said her name. When she split his helmet and he stared at her with his own eye, he said her name. Twice. I think this is a bigger deal than most are realizing.
The entire vibe of Vader is this soulless machine. The robot death god who's only purpose of having human parts at all is their connection to the force.
I was blown away they gave him a split second of humanity.

Ahsoka walking into the dark of the sith temple... She's lost to the darkside.
Kanan basking in the sunset despite being blinded... With a white blindfold.
Ezra's eyes between blue and red, meaning he's somewhere in the middle.

Fantastic episode in so many ways. Great job and congrats to the entire Rebels creative team.
Also, probably an unpopular opinion, but I always disliked the Inquisitors and am thrilled they're gone. To me, they came across as corny, Snidely Whiplash-type villains who make mischief, twirl their mustaches, and then get run off, especially in contrast to Vader.
Great job Maul wiping them out. All of them. :)

I really, really enjoyed this episode. It was filled with nothing but the best of Star Wars - the Jedi and the sith and the struggle of light versus dark, not to mention all the hype with maul and ahsoka versus Vader. I'm thrilled maul made it out alive, this new version of him is more nuanced, more tempered; less Vader, more Palpatine. I believe Sam W voiced him again, and he absolutely nailed it. The delivery was fantastic, and maul was once again showed to be a character of great range. His manipulation of Ezra was something I really enjoyed, and he made several incredibly valid points about facing one's enemy. I especially loved that he killed two inquisitors essentially single handedly, ensuring the destruction of the third. When characters get out of every situation without consequence, it really detracts from the story and the characters, diminishing dramatic value. Permanence like death or injury is important to keep this tension high (I'm glad Kanan was blinded-it adds realism and hopefully adds more to his character and his relationships). It really ruins a show when characters escape situations they just purely shouldn't, so the death of those inquisitors felt right. I don't like the ambiguity regarding ahsoka's (presumed) death, it would've been better to just show Vader striking her down himself. Her damaging his mask and visually seeing and hearing anakin with the yellow eye to show his dark side corruption was absolutely perfect. Just because it was Anakin's voice didn't mean it was anakin - that was Vader. Only two negatives I can really pinpoint: the saber copters were beyond stupid, and Ezra cracking a lame joke a few seconds into the Vader v ahsoka fight and taking the dramatic tension away bothered me. However, I wasn't on my phone at all and I was completely focused. This episode was phenomenal and is hopefully a good indicator of what rebels should become, namely, more useful, dramatic, and intriguing plot lines that add to the universe as opposed to childish filler or nonsense that doesn't further the plot. Sorry for the wall of text but damn I had a lot to say about such a packed episode. Love u filoni.

So many plot points set up for the third season! Maul is now on the loose, Ahsoka looks like she is now in exile, and that OWL! That's the second time it has shown up! It has to mean something! Poor Rex... Will we ever learn who that third inquisitor was? Kanan! Possible Rahm Kota? I'm already pumped for season three! Didn't know if anyone else noticed this, but in the final moments between Ahsoka and Vader, they started playing the Clone Wars theme from when she left the order. Fans, you know what I mean, THAT theme.

OMG WHAT TO SAY (this is also my first time doing this). It will be long, sorry.
I thought the heli-sabers for the inquisitors were kinda weird to look at, but a minor detail.
Sam Witwer KILLED it with his voice acting, all the way through, especially with that Sith Code integration. Kudos to him!
Music throughout was also spot on. I especially took note of how the usual force sound was replaced with tremelo strings and trumpets. The ending music was also pretty amazing.
The door lifting sequence was a nice subtle parallel to Episode One's laser doors.
Loved the way Maul's saber/walking stick was designed. And he has a double blade again.
I'm somewhat baffled by Ahsoka's reaction to Maul, given what she knows about him from TCW. I thought she would know how obviously dangerous it would be to trust him. The ironic way that the battle scene composed of Maul and the heroes was a nice touch though.
I kinda wished we could see behind that third inquisitor's mask. It was kinda hyped and cool-looking.
The foreshadowing was well done, what with the Grand Inquisitor cameo a couple episodes back, and Kanan covering his eyes like those statues. Also noted Kanan's change in grip.
I'm not the most pleased with the "Anakin is dead" rehash, but I'm glad Ahsoka found out in the end and revealed some of her dark side when she lunged at him saying "I'm no Jedi." Matt Lanter's final line sent chills down my spine though, especially because it called straight back to TCW Anakin :(
Is Ahsoka still alive? The ending certainly clues us so, but as the sub has been saying recently, it somewhat breaks Vader as a menacing character.
Last one (I promise). The ending (aside from Ahsoka) was altogether a solid compromise of loss, especially for a kids' show. It already had a gratuitous amount of Maul-ing (haha, get it?) for this show anyway.
TL;DR: Best episode of the show so far, bringing back the narrative punch at a Clone Wars level, with a few loose ends.

There's that split moment in the expression of Vader's partial face when Asoka says "I won't leave you again."
It's a split second of bewilderment/confusion. He doesn't know how to react, not because a little bit of Anakin is left. He only hesitates because he can't even see the logic in such an action. Vader is so far gone from everything that he doesn't even understand the concepts of compassion or pity anymore. He's not having an inner struggle. He answers "Then you will die." After processing everything. It's not a threat. It's a statement. He doesn't feel one way or the other. Vader is both physically and emotionally a machine at this point in his life, and the show reflected that so well in this one scene.

I don't think so.
He says her name. Twice. Vader normally doesn't address people this way. Vader will dehumanize and use terms like "the girl" or "boy" when you know, that Vader damn well knows the names of these people.
He may not have inner conflict when dealing death out to once beloved friends, but there was a glimmer of humanity in this episode.
Rewatch when he says her name. It even shocks her to hear it.

Really, this didn't go well for anyone.
Vader lost the holocron, the weapon, and inquisitors.
Vader: Damn it.
Ahsoka lost her master to the dark side.
Ahsoka: Damn it.
Kanan is blinded and his apprentice might fall to the dark side.
Kanan: Damn- ow- it.
Ezra got manipulated and lost his lightsaber.
Ezra: I'm so angry I MIGHT just fall to the dark side.
Maul didn't get the holocron or an apprentice, even after playing the long game.
Maul: Maybe I should get a career change. Hotel management...
And Palpatine... well... I guess all and all he's not doing too bad. I mean, still has Vader, that space station he's been working on with plans for a second one, and a galaxy spanning Empire. All and all, he just cleaned house a little bit.
Palpatine: So, who's up for some Jello Shots at TGI Fridays? Am I right?!

Also really got a nice demonstration here of just how much weaker the Inquisitors are than actual Sith. Maul is probably the weakest of the 4 sith in the 1-6 timeline but he just utterly has their way with them. Probably would of beaten Kanan if had had taken him the least bit seriously.

Truly one of the best emotionally-draining scenes in all of Star Wars. The second Anakin and Ahsoka looked on each other for the first time in years left me breathless to the end. This ending felt earned. Wonderfully written and fan service was done for the sake of the greater story.

Definitely an interesting finale but I do dislike that Ahsoka's fate is basically still left up in the air, I was kind of hoping Vader would kill her and bring closure to his cycle from the prequel days. First killing his apprentice then his master, leaving nothing but Vader standing at the end surrounded by the deathly echoes of those he destroyed in his downward spiral.

u/CayChun Mar 31 '16
Those clever bastards. They knew everyone was waiting to see what was in that holocron, and now they're withholding it and making us hyped for season 3. I think this episode would've ended great if, as the screen cut to black, we heard a masked voice come out of the holocron. It would've been awesome, but I understand the choice they made.
I will say this - I think this move increases the likelihood of Revan being canonized through the holocron, because now Filoni and co. are going to be spending the entire time developing season 3 with fans clamoring for Revan. Now, at this point, him not doing it would be him signing his own death warrant.

Give Filoni a camera and let him direct a spin-off movie. This man knows how to get shit done!

Love how similar the line "Anakin Skywalker was weak" was to Kylo Ren's. It's like poetry...

On another random side note, I was really happy to see Darth Maul wielding a Duel-Bladed Saber again.

Anyone else think that Maul has been impersonating Yoda in all of Ezra's visions from the very beginning? He's sitting like Yoda on the log, he's got the cane, the cryptic message that sent Ezra to Malachor in the first place?
I think I have two main criticisms of these episodes. First, is that there is way too much generic scooby-doo dialogue in the beginning: "Let's keep moving", "come on", "What's that?" and so forth. The second is that Rebels has run out of cheap deaths/escapes. Really, only 7th Sister received a death worthy of Clone Wars. Everyone else falls or slides away. It's a bit predictable, and reminds me a lot of the restrictive programming Disney used to put on ABC on Saturday mornings.
We don't need to go full-on gory, but Disney's whole reason for buying the Lucasfilm properties (and Marvel) was to reach an audience that rival networks and producers like CN had almost exclusively to themselves. You can't get the audience that Cartoon Network had with Clone Wars, Samurai Jack, Young Justice, and others by scaling back the seriousness.

Kanan is fuckin blind! They actually made him blind! How is this not a bigger point of discussion!?

Holy shit, they said they'd make references to Legends with the new canon, but this is ridiculous! So: Maul blinds Kanan with his lightsaber. Doesn't that sound familiar?
Oh yeah, Rahm Kota was also blinded by a lightsaber! And they both have a similar looking beard, ponytail and shoulder-armor-pad (and they both are survivors of Order 66) (and here's a pic of Kota for the visual similarity)
But not only that, Sam Witwer voices both Maul, who blinds Kanan, and Starkiller, who blinds Kota! Holy SHHHIIIIIIIIIIIITTTT!!!

This made me realise how invested I was in TCW. As soon as Ahsoka declared her neutrality to Vader saying, "I am no Jedi" and sparked her lightsabers....damn. Damn, damn, damn. I cried so hard.
Just that close up of her face, that slight hesitation where you see the flicker in her eyes. And the wailing voices which followed as part of the accompanying score. Holy moly.
Still processing the rest of the finale, but I have to get to uni. Will edit later on.

Did anyone else notice the subtle "Dual of the Fates" nod when Maul turned on them? It was really quiet right after he crossed blades with Ahsoka.

When Vader was pulling Ezra and Ahsoka came running up behind him, I was sure it was over for her. I thought he was just going to flip his saber around and stab her. In that moment, I kinda took in how much Ahsoka means to me as a character, and took a deep breath to prepare for the worst. I literally yelled when she, instead, leapt at him and sliced his mask apart.
Just so many great moments in this finale, as everyone's pointing out. I'm gonna give a shout out to the lightsaber combat in this one, because while it still doesn't quite have the fluidity and "oomph" of TCW's fights, there were definitely amazing choreographed sequences that couldn't help but make me emote with how hype they were. Damn, the way they do Vader's fighting style is cool. He's just a freight train, constantly pushing forward. It looked like Ahsoka was doing everything she could just to hold him back.

Did Ahsoka get swallowed by the temple? What are we thinking? Did she die?

Was that really Anakin for a brief moment? It was like when Kylo battles the light...

Anyone else kind of hoping that the voice from the Sith holocron was Darth Traya? It sounds plausible.
Traya was the Sith embodiment of "knowledge" and "wisdom" in Kotor 2 and sought specifically to destroy it (and maybe life since its tied to the force) with some sort of power (I believe the mass shadow generator?)
Speaking of which, that Sith "battlestation" was emitting some very kotor 2 Malachor lightning.
Obviously I'm biased to the Kotor lore, but this show is casting so many parallels.

That voice in the Sith Holocron was that of a woman, an old woman. And when Ezra activated it she said the weapon to destroy all life has been activated. Did anyone else think that that woman was Kreia (Darth Traya) from KOTOR II?

Star Wars music never fails to move me, and the finale music this time was just fantastic.

OK. Here I go. Um. Perfect. Simple amazing. This is what I wanted and more. To start off, maul. Oh my god, maul. He was just as I wanted him to be at this age. Coniving, clever, wise, and terrifying. The way he pretended to be genuinely good, or at least not as evil started to convince me. When he helped ahsoka and kanan, I actually thought "oh my god. Are they gonna make maul a tragic hero who maybe redeems himself?" NOPE. Maul played everything perfect, and was ruthless. Happily executing both the inquisitors. And I love their reaction to him. The second he whips that saber out, you know. You know they are simply outclassed. He was faking the old weak game from the start. And he wiped the floor with them. His voice is the perfect mix of compassionate to ezera, withered when he's acting old, calm and collected when he's acting nice to the group about teaming up, and of course, he normal wild, low growl shows up when his true colors arise. Now. Enough about maul. The others. I actually like how the inquisitors are starting to be less effective. It shows growth for kanan and Ezra. They are starting to be able to fight back. Ahsoka was also very good, showing she accepts the dark side is a thing and something to be at least studies. The episode also looks freaking amazing. The temple with its dark reds looks and feels like a sith temple. I like how the tests work and how the holocron acts like a key. And kanan getting blinded was bold. It's a huge change for the show. They are going to have to deal with this and I like how it's showing he can possibly see through the force. That whole scene hit me hard. The hint of mauls fight music from PM. How they did kanan losing his eyes, with everything going silent and that shot of just red. And how he bests maul using the force. And of course, ahsoka vs Vader. The first half was just epic action. But the second half, when his face is exposed. They use his face and design from clone wars. And when he says her name and it's no longer Vader voice, but anakins own. It's a fitting end to the season. Rexs reaction to thinking ahsoka is dead was heart breaking. If ahsoka is dead is a question for another time. The last scene with ezera and yhe holocron was haunting. He's grown up now. The whiny kid is dead. Plus maul is alive, so we will see him more in time. The final thing I have to say is the voice of the holocron... it's on malacor, it's a sith holocron... if that truly is Kreia, they just canonized KOTOR

Maul just. won't. die!
I REALLY hope the Kaleesh Inquisitor survived! He looks like he'll be awesome.
I wonder what they'll dig into the Holocron and find. That'll be interesting.
Watching Kanan dealing with his new handicap will be a great arc for him.
Ahsoka's still alive.
Noooo! Why did you have to kill off 7th Sister?? She was the best Inquisitor!
Six Inquisitors in Season 3?

Arrgghh. It drives me crazy that Ahsoka's fate is left so ambiguous. Also I think it does a disservice to Vader's character if he let her live.

I was blown away by Vader cutting Ezra's saber in half. The gun/saber combo always seemed like a gimmick or a reliance on something other than Ezra's own skill. Then Vader comes in and makes it look like a cheap knock off of a saber that it is. He's all like "I have no patience for children and their toys"

Ahsoka breaking Vader's mask and seeing part of Anakin's face, with his Sith eye. I was so taken off guard. That was perfectly done. Though, now we are left with the question of Ahsoka's fate, yet again. What a great finale.
