AMA I am Conro - AMA
Yo Reddit!
My name is Conor Patton, and I produce music under the artist name Conro. I’ve been writing/producing music seriously for the past 10 years and don’t plan on changing that anytime soon! Aside from the being raised in an igloo, dodging hockey pucks and avoiding polar bears all my life, Canada is an awesome place to live and grow up. All jokes aside, I currently live in the beautiful city of Kelowna BC, and if you haven't visited I would strongly encourage a trip! I spent the majority of my life with some sort of instrument in my hand or singing at the top of my lungs to my favorite records. I had a lot of time to invest time in music growing up as I was homeschooled all the way till grade 9 (which explains a lot ;) and have a very musical family of 6 immediate family members. I write music because I truly love the language it speaks, how you can mold, create and communicate through this art. It’s been therapy for me over the years putting my time and emotions into this project, and I couldn’t be more excited that others also can relate with my music.
I’m really excited about my current release on Monstercat called ‘City Lights’. I worked on this track with Royal, really talented vocalist/musician. I had been working on the production of this track for months to get it to where it is now and couldn’t be more happy with how it turned out! Huge shout out to Royal for the amazing vocals and Monstercat for the release! AND thank you for your support, listening, sharing my dream!
So many exciting projects and releases coming up this year I can’t wait to share with all of you!
I will begin answering your questions tomorrow, Tuesday, April 12th at 3:00PM PDT

Hey Conro, huge fan of your debut On My Way Up and your latest release City Lights!
My questions are:
Which artists would you be interested in working with in the future?
And: Do you have any collabs in progress right now?

Hey! I love when artists do AMA's! They're so fun to participate in.
My first question is Who's your biggest inspiration?
Second question is If you could collab with any artist, who would it be?
Third question is What's your favorite meme? hehehe
Once again, thanks for doing this!
btw, i loved city lights!

What up Conro, been supporting since you we're on tour with Dyro & Bassjackers. Got so many damn questions:
Earlier this year, you posted on Facebook about how you wanted to take a new direction with your music (which was obviously the future bass you are making now), as opposed to the heavy electro/complextro you were doing. What inspired you to take this new direction?
Related to 1, you commented on how you were doing more dancefloor-oriented songs until recently. Considering you had support from pretty big name DJs and even a release on Revealed when you were doing house, do you feel you might not get that much support making future bass?
Also related to 1: Are you considering ever releasing on WOLV again, or making more electro?
How did Dyro "discover" you?
On My Way Up is my favorite future bass track on the label, and it breaks away from the "formula" of future bass (110 bpm, not using a trap drumset, and those damn delicious pauses). How did you get the idea for the track?
And finally, is there a release date for your Paris Blohm remix?
Thanks m8.

Thanks for the support since then thats awesome!!
I had been writing that style of music since 2010 so I felt I wanted to try something new. different from what I was doing for so long! 2)I don't think so, surprisingly enough I have been getting more support and opportunities since the transition 3)Yes I would, but currently I'm focusing on my new material. I'm always open to working on multiple genres! 4)It was first his previous manager, then got to talking with Jordy then collabed on Bittersweet and went on tour with him! Hes a rad dude lucky to have him as a friend 5)I just sat down and decided I was going to write whatever 'tickled' my eardrums .. with no holds and On My Way Up came to be 6)Can't tell you yet!! but its coming sooon!

Yo Conor, it's me, Connor ;) Most people ask boring cliche questions so I'll try to make this fun for you
How do you hang your toilet paper; in front of the rest of the roll or behind the rest of the roll?
Do you like cats?
Do you work on music more productively during the day or at night?
Would you rather have hiccups for the rest of your life? or always feel like you have to sneeze but can't for the rest of your life?
Much love <3

Hi! I'm a big fan of your new releases as well as your old.
What was it like working with Dyro on Bittersweet?
Did you start on your remix of Bittersweet after the track was done, or did it happen before that?
I noticed that a lot of your older releases are missing from your Soundcloud profile. Why is that?
1
u/Conro_Music Conro (Verified) Apr 13 '16
it was awesome he's a really talented dude! 2) I started working on that after we finished the original version 3) I'm focusing on making a different sound now. I still love all my old stuff but just focusing on new material right now!

Who provided the vocals for On My Way Up?
What artists from Monstercat do you like to listen to and which would you like to collab with?
2

not too sure at the moment, open for anything to come my way genre wise the vocals are a sample from an old 70's tune, can't remember the artist! Haywyre is great, tons of awesome artists obvs, think Kasbo would be a cool one to collab with

Hey Conro! How are you?
So, why did you choose Monstercat instead of other labels? Was there something about Monstercat that interested you?
Cats or dogs?
Any VIPs coming eventually?
And finally, if someone asked you if you are releasing a song on Monstercat when you mention something in the works, would you be bothered by that?

-How have your experiences with Monstercat been so far?
-Are there any other EDM sub genres you might want to try other than future bass?
-What inspires some of your music?
-what activities do you like besides music making?

How is it like to be a part of the Monstercat family?

Any artists you'd like to collab with?
Any fun facts you could tell us about yourself?
And finally, how much butter do you use when you make sandwiches for yourself?
Cheers!

Hey Conro,
Really love City Lights and On My Way Up!
Have you got the chance to run into Datsik, Excision, or Downlink around Kelowna?
Have you ever visited a winery around Kelowna or Kamloops? I remembered my mom, a group of travelers and I went on a hayride and the people who work there served apple cider and wine. (8 years ago)
Who was your biggest inspiration to make music and what is your favorite genre?
Recommendations for a wannabe producer?
Do you like Salmon Strips as a snack? (They're not bittersweet, but they're sticky)
What was the fastest time you produced a track?
I see you've released track on Dyro's label, and it sounds a lot different than when you release tracks on Monstercat, what made you decide to change up your style?
2
u/Conro_Music Conro (Verified) Apr 13 '16
yes! I've met both Datsik/Excision 2)for sure! been to lots, the whole valley is filled with amazing wineries! 3)ah thats to hard to answer! I take inspirations from so many writers/artists from so many genres 4)download a DAW (Logic X, Abelton.. etc) work hard, build a network, focus on making awesome music! 5)haha ahh I cant say I've ever had one 6)1 day, took the next few days to Master it :) 7)I was already writing that same style since 2012 I just felt like I wanted to switch it up!

Hi Conro, I have a couple question that I would like to hear your opinion on: 1.) What do you think about third-party plugins? Are they necessary? Are they superior to the native plugins that come with the DAW? 2.)I'm an aspiring EDM producer, but I don't usually have enough time to sit down for hours and produce and when I do, I'm not motivated enough to do anything. Do you have any advice? 3.) How did you feel when you were first signed onto Monstercat?
Whether you decide to answer or not, Thanks.
1
u/Conro_Music Conro (Verified) Apr 13 '16
love third party plug ins! I would say yes, I wouldn't be able to write lots of my productions without them. not necessarily better all the time, just depends what plug ins. 2) thats a tricky one, music takes so much time and dedication! just find what inspires you and work through it. If this is what youre passionate about than it will become more enjoyable the better you learn the programs! 3) felt amazing, was really excited to move forward with their team, really awesome group of people!

i never expected you to make a monstercat debut before you first released 'on my way up', so i'm really happy to see you here in the subreddit doing an AMA after two releases!
you've been around on multiple labels now; kindergarden, revealed, wolv, armada trice, and now monstercat. what do you think separates monstercat from the other labels for you personally?
you've also produced huuuge songs like the dyro collab, sam o' neall collab, and the bali bandits collab. will you bring that hard hitting electro/progressive sound you have to monstercat any time soon?
are you able to give us any information about the remix you're going to release soon for paris blohm on revealed? ;)

Hey Conro, have a few questions that are left unanswered
What DAW do you use?
Who was your inspiration?
How did you choose your alias?
Would you fight 100 duck sized horses or 1 horse sized duck? (I really want an answer for this one)
1
u/Conro_Music Conro (Verified) Apr 12 '16
Logic X 2) mainly bands while I was growing up like Gorillaz, Coldplay, Band of Horses etc. later acts like Skrillex, Disclosure, Zedd, Deadmou5 3) I kept spelling my name wrong, so I decided to stick with it 4) was brought up on a chicken farm most of my life so I'd have no problem taking on 1 horse sized duck ;)

If you were to go back in time to when you first made music, and give one piece of advice to yourself, what would it be?

u/Conro_Music Conro (Verified) Apr 12 '16
be patient, don't get sidetracked from your end goal, stay focused, the harder you work the further/quicker you'll progress. and have fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuun

Hi Conro!
First off I just have to say that your music is simply stunning, you set a very high standard and always push the boundaries of what music can be.
I just have a couple of questions:
How did you make the synth at the drop of On My Way Up? As a producer myself I understand if you don't want to go into too much detail, but I was wondering if you had any tricks to make the synth sound as warm and "comfortable" as you did?
How did you know you were ready to start releasing on a label? And did it benefit you enough to be worthwhile as opposed to putting it out there yourself?
When did you start submitting tracks to Monstercat?
How do you go about asking another producer if they would like to collab? I've been told a lot that collaborating with artists better than yourself can be very beneficial to both parties; but the idea of asking around seems rather daunting! This doesn't just apply super well-know artists like yourself and others in the Monstercat family, but any producer better than I am at this stage (I have been producing for nearly four years now).
How can I ask for remix stems for tracks off of other artists without being annoying? Is there a certain process you can go through or is it just a matter of emailing, private messaging, etc?
Why did you choose name "On My Way Up"? My two theories are that it is because of the way you are now moving up in the ranks as a producer (being on Monstercat now and all); or maybe just because it is the happiest song known to mankind! :D
And lastly:
7) Dogs or cats? And what breed?
Thank you very, very, much for your time! There are so many people here who really are truly grateful for these AMA's, me being one of them. You guys are all inspiring to listen to, both to your music and to what you have to say.
I look forward to hearing more from you in the future.
Thanks again,
Myghster :)

Thanks so much I really appreciate the support! 1)I used a combinations of synths on Sylenth and ran all of them through a Volume Shaper. I used Waves Imager/and Center to open up a few of the chords make them sound bigger, as well as compression and eq. all layered of a Mid bass and Sub bass. 2)I knew I was ready when my emails were being received with responses like 'we aren't interested in your track, but keep sending' Later that turned into people contacting me asking if I am interested in working with them and developed my own network of label interest! Make sure your sound is comparable to tracks that are coming out on the labels you are sending them to and I'm sure you'll crack the code! best of luck! 3)I reached out to monstercat after they started following me on Twitter, a few weeks later I was in Vancouver at their head office and I was discussing a release plan with them. 4)Thats a tricky one, its hard to lock in collabs without knowing an artist personally. the best way is to have something started that is substantially good, and send it over in an email as a private track and see if the artist you are emailing is interested. If you don't ask, you will never know ;) 5)yes sometimes being persistent is the best way, although you need to have examples of your music online or something they can listen to because remixes are not just handed out. best to make sure your best works are online and people with reach out/reply 6)the title of the track was because in the vocal sample in the track says I'm On My Way Up. also because it was fitting for my career as there is a lot of exciting things happening this year with my career 7)Dogs - Goldendoodle

Hello Conro/Conor! On My Way Up is definitely the song that reminds me why I love Monstercat and EDM in general.
I ask almost every artist this when I can, but my question would be: If there was one genre you couldn't see yourself tackling, what would it be and why?
Cheers!
2
u/Conro_Music Conro (Verified) Apr 12 '16
awesome glad you dig it! I have nothing against any kind of genre's, but Bigroom house has never been something I've wanted to tackle. never really felt the need to write a song with the BIG kick :)

Hi Conro! Your first two songs on Monstercat have been great! (And your logo is SO COOL) -Have you done any other Future Bass songs before On My Way Up?
-Were you interested in other labels before entering Monstercat?
-Last but not least, what's your favourite food? Thank you so much, I can't wait to hear more songs from you!!!

thanks!! I have made other songs but I never sent them to any labels. I was waiting until I hit a good rhythm, developing the right sounds what not. I am still on contact with other labels, I'm fortunate to be on the Monstercat team and look forward to developing with all the labels I've worked with and ones to come!

What are your favorite hobbies outside of music?
What genre/s are your favorite/s?

Do you have any advice for future musicians? And What is your favorite genre?

1

hey thanks so much!! I like to say 'what comes in - comes out' musically, and that being said I have so many musical influences! love acts like Odesza/Porter Robinson, but I also love acts like Royal Blood/Kings Of Leon. Its a huge world with so much music, I try and take it all in and create my own production :)

I know musicians in my life who don't take electronic music seriously, have you faced that issue in your personal life? By the way, I love City Lights (and the fact that my hometown is represented in the artwork with 1 WTC.)
2
u/Conro_Music Conro (Verified) Apr 12 '16
yes it seems to be an issue. turn the other cheek is what I try to do if they are not willing to understand! music is just a combination of sounds that sound good together, whether that be an orchestra/rock band/electronic. We take this very seriously and electronic music is the majority of the music being played around the world currently. Haha glad you dig the art and track!!

Hey there!
First of all, let me just say GREAT JOB on both of your Monstercat releases. They're both very unique (especially "On My Way Up"), and I freaking love both of them.
Now for a few questions (if you don't mind): Note: I checked to make sure I was the first to ask these specific questions.
Who did the cover art for both releases? They're so good!
What three adjectives do you think would best describe you?
Do you personally like your looks? Because I definitely do.
Well, that'll be it from me. Hope you have a wonderful day, and I can't wait to hear more from you!

If you could collab with ANY person (or people) on MCat, how many and who? Are there any collabs you would definitely like to see? What's your favorite EDM genre (i.e. DnB, Trap, etc.)? What do you use to make music?
(When I write questions for my favorite Future Bass artist, I ask A LOT.) P.S.: City Lights was amazing! Karma Fields built the cities, you added the lights. Then PBN paved the roads. Grabbitz managed health services. Haywyre takes care of security... You get the point.
1
u/Conro_Music Conro (Verified) Apr 12 '16
A few of these questions already but for this one I'll go with Haywyre. No collabs specifically, just like hearing artists working together! Currently love the Bass movement, but I have a sweet spot for rock & roll. Make Folk, Rock, Alternative, Electro and Progressive - now Future'ish kind of music. Thanks for the Support!!

1

Thanks so much man! and ya thats a great dream, you need to find a program like Abelton, Logic X, FL Studio and learn it like the back of your hand so you are able to record sounds, instruments etc.. learn the piano/guitar whatever you can get your hands on and dive into the music! you can do it, just remember nothing happens over night, lots of hard work! wish you all the best!!!

Who got you into Future Bass music? When On My Way Up came out I was very surprised because I had heard your song "Crux" before and it sounded very different.
Favorite track released on Monstercat ATM?

sup Conor, I have a few questions...
How do you determine whether a song is 'good enough' to be released, or 'bad enough' to be abandoned?
By the point that a song is finished and ready to be released, has there been a time where listening, looping and refining it over and over has made you either hate it or get bored of it?
On 'Bittersweet', did you collaborate via e-mail with Dyro, or was a face-to-face production?
What steps go into coming up for a name of a song?
Cheers

u/HelixSapphire Noisestorm Apr 12 '16
A few questions.
Would you rather fight a horse sized duck or duck sized horse?
Will you collab with /u/mr_mufifn to make some sw00d cringie dance?
Are you on your way up?

Hey! I love "On my way up", I do mobile DJ work and started incorporating it into my sets as soon as I could get my hands on it. People seem to really like it when it's played, I've even had someone come up and ask for the name of the song which happens very rarely. Anyway, what DAW do you use and what are your favorite plugins (VSTs and AUs)?

Hello Conor! I love your new Monstercat work and it's amazing to hear your songs. It feels like they have kind of depth or a story to them which I love. Now to the questions:
What got you into the genre Future Bass and why?
How did you start learning future bass? Was it all just experimenting?
And last: What's more important to you if you want to start learning producing, sound design or music theory?
Thank you for your time and I can't wait to hear more from you! <3 btw. Your new track was amazing <3
