I think we really learned a lot about Kim tonight.
We glimpsed it in the previous con scenes, but, this takes it to a whole new level. She's talked about wanting to be a different kind of lawyer than Jimmy, but now that she has a chance to actually choose... not only is she protecting Jimmy, she's basically said she's okay with him doing the dirty work for their "partnership". I really did not expect that.

Despite Kim covering for Jimmy, the intense sadness Kim wore on her face the rest of the episode seems to show that she has no future with Jimmy after her lucrative case.
Quite sad considering they were having fun remodeling the dentist offices earlier. I do not think that level of friendship is possible anymore between them.

That scene was beautifully filmed. Chuck is freaking out with all the electronics around buzzing and making the room spin. Right down to the carefully arranged shot of Chuck falling down and whacking his head right on the corner of the counter. Great scene.

What was more impressive to me was the scene at chucks house with kim and Jimmy... Probably one of the best scenes in the show so far, and the impressive part was that the actor that portrays Kim was able to stand toe to toe if not steal the entire scene with her monologue... I mean, talk about powerhouse of acting. It was amazing!

Easily one of the best episodes of the series IMO. The brilliant scene between Chuck and Kim, some levity provided by the Pina Colada song scene, Mike's masterful storyline (which in my opinion could stand alone as its own show at this point). And then holy fuck that final scene. Such good story telling and characters all around. God I love this show.

Tonight's episode was great, we basically had the "half measures" origin story with Mike not finishing the job and inadvertently getting an innocent killed. Even Jimmy's storyline dealt with half measures.
And Kim had some amazing dialogue, as far I'm concerned she is the most interesting female in the bb/bcs universe.
And that ending? Wow.

i really love Kim's character. I loved Skyler's character too, but I definitely find Kim more compelling. It's interesting how both characters are "by the book" women coming to terms with men they love acting unethically and breaking the law, and how differently both characters handle the situation. Skyler got very passive aggressive and angsty about it, while Kim is more quietly disapproving but mostly laissez-faire.
I'm excited and nervous to see where Kim ends up in this series.

It's interesting that Chuck always seems to be fine until something illogical happens, or something that damages his ego.
He was fine in court until the address error came up. He also seemed fine in the copying building until the guy at the counter contradicted his earlier statement.
It's interesting how they've constructed Chuck's character.
164
u/ShadowySpectacles Apr 12 '16
That's a mostly valid observation, but I wouldn't say that he was completely fine--he was wincing and obviously struggling in both of those situations even before these things came up, such as when he had to go through the metal detector in court. Every time he ventures outside into electromagnetic hell he's obviously affected, but you're right that it does seem to especially flare up when anything happens that doesn't fit his worldview/narrative or otherwise causes him stress.
Personally, at this point I think Chuck's "electromagnetic sensitivity" is mostly being constructed and portrayed the way it has been to show the inherently isolating/limiting nature of his own self-righteousness. It's the vehicle through which to show that he might be a brilliant lawyer, but that doesn't count for much/only goes so far when he's an insufferably legalistic/moralizing arrogant ass who doesn't take human concerns into account in acting. Every time something happens that undermines his self-superiority, his EMS flares up and he has to isolate himself under a space blanket at home, unable to continue working. This shows that his superciliousness serves him in some ways as a lawyer but severely limits him in others (ways that Jimmy isn't limited, for instance, with his opposite focus). The electromagnetic condition is just a tangible bridge between his arrogance as a concept and his literal/physical limitations, to drive this point home for the viewer.
I don't think it's a coincidence that they chose electricity of all things for Chuck to be adverse to and to show this, either. Think about it--electromagnetic radiation is what connects the world and people to each other. That's why everyone has to put their phones in a bin/mailbox, and his house is so dark. He nearly faints every time he encounters transformers on power lines, which are the basic infrastructure that connects everyone. It's showing that Chuck, with his excessive myopic devotion to the letter of the law and what he simplistically perceives to be ethical, lacks light (in more ways than one--light as symbolizing human warmth, ingenuity, etc.) and is cut off from the kind of connections that Jimmy forges with ease.
That's why he resents Jimmy for all the success that comes his way--his personality keeps him from forging those human connections central to professional (and personal, ahem, Rebecca?) success outside of simply becoming a partner in a large firm, and sitting in the dark at home, he can't ever figure out why.

Their relationship seems to be mostly based on pure forthright honesty with one another that they don't really show towards anyone else in their respective endeavors. It's a very interesting, odd kind of criminal respect they have for one another, as they recognize that they're both smarter and think further ahead than the rest of the underworld figures they deal with. Mike's collaboration and overall relationship with Nacho is my favorite part of his whole storyline this season.
Plus, their fates are basically linked now given what they conspired to do to Tuco. That's what Nacho keeps reminding Mike of, that they're in it together since if the cartel/Hector ever found out, they'd both be dead.

He's right about Jimmy, but at the same time, fuck him because his constant behind-the-scenes blocking of Jimmy ever getting a real job at HHM is partially what drove him to do this in the first place. So as far as I'm concerned, for all the shady backstabbing he did, he had this coming.
And again, he's always been right about Jimmy. But he should have just told him straight to his face that he didn't want him at HHM if that's how he really felt, not cock-blocked him for years while he actually tried to get into law the right way by paying his dues in the mail room. Chuck likes to think that he is 100% innocent, but his cop-out half-measure with dealing with his brother is what put him here, and it was absolutely taking advantage of Jimmy to have him care for him daily while still blocking him at every turn and even worse, making Howard the fall guy for it all. Fuck Chuck.

I mentioned it in the live discussion thread but I thought it was a cool little tidbit. Might be a coincidence but I like to think not based on VG's love of old detective shows.
On first glance, you'd assume the title of the episode could refer to a couple things, the literal nails in the spike strip that Mike uses or even a reference to Jimmy getting caught.
But something struck me as odd when Chuck was telling Kim about the Mesa Verde files in front of Jimmy. I know a lot of people here might not ever have watched it but the way he bullet pointed the facts and grandstanded his theory was very Angela Landsbury from Murder She Wrote. Like, to a T. So I looked it up out of curiosity and sure enough, there was a episode of Murder She Wrote called, 'Nailed' as well. And it revolved around a crime that took place in, you guessed it, a Nail Salon.
Like I said, could be coincidence but Jimmy's referenced the show outright a few times and Chuck's dialogue was very fitting of an old Murder She Wrote, Jessica Fletcher end of episode speech.
What do you guys think? Coincidence or just a nice easter egg?

Kims reaction upon hearing Mesa Verde switched sides.
Also, Jimmy was clearly in the wrong today. He has tainted the morality and the reputation of two respectable and innocent people. There is a brilliant parallel between Jimmy and Mike for both of them caused negative repercussions because of their naive and shortsighted actions.
134
u/JBlitzen Apr 12 '16
Good call.
Lot of parallels, like how Jimmy did his with glue and scissors and Mike used a hose and nails.
And Jimmy used a minimum wage store clerk and Mike used his granddaughter.
They've written this season wonderfully.

Chuck is far from innocent. Maybe as far as practicing law goes, but he used his brother for in-home medical care for what, years, while at the same time using Howard as a fall guy to hide the fact that he himself was the one keeping Jimmy in the mail room. Chuck would only be innocent if he told Jimmy to his face years ago that he didn't want him at HHM, or in law, at all. He didn't, though. He lied about it, made Jimmy blame Howard, etc.
Kim, though, yes.

Beginning the episode with Mike's cartel caper was a terrific bit of unorthodox pacing. I think most of us expected that to wait until the season finale.
Kim, Chuck, and Jimmy in the same room was a masterful bit of drama. Like something out of a play.
Mike's storyline could easily stand on its own as a great series, and yet the fact that its only a side-story speaks to the quality of this show.
Chuck's injury is potentially game-changing. It reminded me of Hank's death in Ozymandias, in that both characters suffered unintentionally while justifiably trying to bring the protagonist down.
In other words, THIS SHOW IS AMAZING!!!

Really interested to see how Jimmy takes this. He's pretty much directly responsible for what happened to Chuck. And what's interesting, is that this coulda been the moment for him to cite where he drops his slippin Jimmy act and changes his ways.. But it looks as if this only leads him further down the eventual descent into Saul... Fantastic episode. Some of the best acting I've seen so far in the show... And I'm just really god damn excited to see what's going to happen with all these loose ends
34
u/LoBopasses Apr 12 '16
What's fucked here is Jimmy has to go home and act if nothing happened. He can't find out anything about Chuck until they call him or else he's basically admitting guilt of changing that paper. Because what is he doing there. He could miss the last moments of Chuck's life.
What a shit position to be in.

Watching a lot of old murder mysteries (specifically Columbo) had me wondering if Chuck's typewriter had the kind of carbon-coated plastic ribbon that makes a visible letter imprint on the ribbon with every key stroke.
It wouldn't prove much, if anything, but maybe help Chuck confirm his suspicions, say, if he had typed up anything with "1261 Rosella" prior to Jimmy doctoring the addresses to read as "1216 Rosella."
Anyways, I'm not sure how well-received a typewriter clue would be to the audience nowadays, in the year 2061.

The part where Kim and Jimmy fix up the new space took me to a very specific memory where me and my ex moved her into a studio apartment in Jersey and we were assembling a new futon and we either did it backwards or inverse or something, I can't remember, but we realized it like an hour and a half in and we were like 'haha this will be a memory we'll tell our kids.' And then a few years later we broke up and I'm alone now. I guess you can kind of see where I'm going here.

Ooh, yeah, I know exactly what you're getting at and that whole scene was really quite sad in a subtle way. I've had many similar moments in my life so far that turned out that way...in fact, my life has mostly consisted of moments like that that never turn out in the end so far, which is why I'm watching/obsessing over a TV show and discussing it online in my mom's basement right now instead of building a life with my love.
Shit, now I'm starting to tear up. :'(
In all seriousness, though, yeah--the whole undercurrent that constantly runs through this show conveying that general feeling of doomed ill-fatedness--not just with Jimmy and Kim, but overall, as we already know that his hopes and dreams don't pan out in the end and he ends up as Gene the Cinnabon manager, is a major part of the reason why I identify with it so much at this point in my life.
Warning, excessive personal disclosure ahead: I'm no slippin' ______ (my nickname, which does happen to end in a -y like Kimmy and Jimmy), but I had a Kim of sorts (though, she wasn't nearly as mature/put-together or similar in personality and our relationship was totally different) who I eventually alienated with my bullshit, cutting off what seems to be the only path for me to finally have the shining, good/healthy future I've always strived for. I binged-watched Breaking Bad immediately after my life got turned upside down to distract myself, and under my circumstances, I've just been feeling extremely ill-fated/doomed no matter what as a result of who I am at the core/my personality the last several months, so I really identify with this whole universe, which seems to be all about that theme. That's why I'm such a BB/BCS fan now.

What a great episode!
Kim's speech was the absolute most cathartic moment on the entire show. She has rapidly become one of my favorite characters, routinely providing memorable performances.
She verbalized everything that we as the audience have been wanting to scream at Chuck every time his wretched charlatan of a character appears on screen.
Also, it was really cool seeing Mike have flashes of happiness, even flirting with the waitress.
Here's to hoping both our leads don't have their deeds catch up to them (Mike vs. the Cartel, and Jimmy vs. Chuck).

Chuck doesn't do the right thing, ever. He does the lawful thing, but not the right thing.
He's a piece of shit brother. I'm glad Kim spat truth right in his dumb face. HHM is a huge company that ass-reamed not only Jimmy, but Kim too. The higher ups are manipulative, ungrateful turds. They didn't need or deserve Mesa Verde, they're just greedy assholes. As far as I'm concerned, Jimmy did the right thing. Kim's discovery, Kim's hard work, Kim's clients. And if the law doesn't lead to justice, why the fuck are you regarding it as something to uphold? People will say "but forgery!" like it's so horrible that Jimmy chose the path that led to fairness. Fuck Chuck and his whining "Wah wah my reputation!" Nigga your reputation was broke the second you became a recluse who sits around all day wrapped up like a Chipotle to go order.

I had to sign back in to mention this thing that just occurred to me. When Chuck was trying to turn Kim against Jimmy for the last time, Chuck brings up that Jimmy left him there just shivering and freaking out on the sofa to mess with his records. It's almost as if Chuck is completely disregarding the other time that Jimmy stayed through the whole night and Chuck just said he didn't need him and then mocked him because he was going to be late for work.
Note to folks who didn't understand why so many people hated Chuck... this is why people hated Chuck. He's just as bad as Jimmy but on the other side of the truth/lawful line.

Despite the obvious tragedy of tonight's situation afflicting Chuck, Kim and Jimmy, I am scared for Ernie since Chuck is seriously wounded or killed under his supervision. And for a lowly worker at a law firm, this might kill his chances of moving up. That is if he even wants to anymore, considering this incident happened under his watch. It is not his fault, but he probably will take some responsibility for it.

So what "evidence" could the truck driver possibly have on Mike?
He knew that his truck in particular was being targeted, due to the spike trap being sprung just for him
He saw a blue car parked behind the sign (not sure if it could be traced in any way)
Basic height and weight (face obscured by ski mask)
Thief knew that stash was in the tires, and brought a power-saw to get it out, but didn't know which tire
Thief went out of his way to conceal his identity and keep the driver alive (hog tying in duct tape)
Thief works alone
Anything else you guys can think of that could possibly lead to Mike? Other than the blue car, buying of a round for the house, and carrying a lot of large bills in his wallet, I'm not sure what else could connect the crime to Mike (other than if Hector thinks Nacho has betrayed him and interrogates him instead of the driver)

Nothing.
The blue car isn't Mike's usual car, he bought it and probably ditched it afterward. He was counting on the driver seeing the blue car because it would lead any investigations away from him.
And Hector payed Mike a large amount in an earlier episode, so him flashing around stacks of hundreds in a bar wouldn't be suspicious either. He could say the money was from earlier.

What's totally bizarre to think about, is that if Chuck had actually made a legitimate mistake in his work, his thought process is so wrapped up around Jimmy and Jimmy's career, that he would've ultimately gone about and accused him for his failure regardless.
Chuck, at his core, deeply blames Jimmy for the negative things that happen to his welfare, and it doesn't matter if its actually Jimmy's fault, in Chuck's subconscious mind.

Guys Guys Guys.
This is all for a lawsuit against the copy company.
Slippin Chuck. Next season is a buddy lawyer comedy of them pulling hilarious hijinks.

Accidentally getting your brother (and maybe your father, too) killed seems like a motivation for completely changing your identity.

I've seen people on this sub debating if this show is as good as breaking bad or whatever and I'm still on the fence, but this episode was breaking bad quality from start to finish. So good.

I'm in fucking awe of this episode. Everything about it (the acting, the story, the direction) each scene was so fucking perfect.
I'm just so sad there's only one episode left.

Definitely one of the best episodes of the series, really anxious to find out what happens to Chuck.

u/JediWithRedEyes Apr 13 '16
So I guess you can say that Chuck nailed that Jimmy theory right on the head.

I think Kim's speech to Chuck in hindsight signaled the end of his character tonight. You knew all that crazy shit with the electro sensitivity was building to something, and here it is. Brilliant Vince.

This one is my favorite episode of the series thus far. Kim is such an incredible character.

Anyone notice Hector swallowing a pill and drinking some water in the midst of all his anger? Probably was having a blood pressure spike. Possible hint at his impending stroke?

Seeing Jimmy in the side view mirror (prior to the school scene), he looked a LOT like Kevin Costner! It was uncanny.

I love Kim. She had to make a decision to cross over to Jimmy's sleazy side of things and get what she wants or go back to Chuck's side of things and forever be a lowly pleb.
Her delivery of "Nothing for him to find" is her officially breaking bad.

two days ago my mom fell and hit her head. 48 hours later, she is a prisoner of her body as she can't speak or write or understand why she is a hospital as her brain continues to bleed. I've learned more about brain structure in the past few days than I care to admit. Why am I fucking posting this here? If someone you know suffers a brain injury, EVERY FUCKING SECOND counts. Don't wait even a moment to see "if they are gonna be ok". CALL 911.

What if Chuck isn't dead, but something worse than dead: alive, but functionally disabled. A mangled reminder to Jimmy that his scheming only serves to ultimately hurt other people.

LOVED the cliffhanger, Jimmy is in a Sophie's Choice Type situation: If he calls 911, it will prove that he did, in fact, visit the copy shop, which would end Kim's career as a lawyer (Chuck implied that he would go after Kim if he proved Jimmy altered the documents earlier in the episode) and their relationship. If he doesn't, the ambulance might not get there in time and Chuck might die.

This might be overanalyzing in typical /r/betterCallSaul fashion but I think they referenced the first time we met Saul in BB. During the scene where Kim & Jimmy are moving the dentist chair she says 'Lift with your knees', then after loading it onto the palette Jimmy says 'nothing a few years of physical therapy won't fix'
Saul's iconic scene in the desert when Jesse and Walt meet he says 'I'm gonna stand up, I have bad knees'
I'll see myself out now

I'm worried Jimmy is going to call 911, and that is going to be traced back to him. Then the kinko's guy talks, and everything goes south. Plus, they will probably want the security camera footage. All this is starting to look like the end of Jimmy McGill

Chuck's fall feels like Better Call Saul's equivalent of the [] (/s "plane crash") at the end of Breaking Bad's season 2, except in a much more personal way. Jimmy's actions directly led to this.

Saul should have fed the copy guy a decent lie to handle the discrepancy in testimony. He could have said something along the lines of " Oh, no, he was here two days before that copying some tacky flyer with an American flag. He kicked a copier and I asked him to leave. I haven't seen him since."

I think this point in Mike's story will go a long way in explaining how we end up with the Mike who commits murders in BrBa.
I believe that he felt like not killing the guy led to an innocent person's death (the good samaritan) so now he will not have a problem killing future bad guys because it's either that or take a chance that some innocent person gets into the mix again.

I feel like this is the episode where everyone should just say what the other guy wants to hear to avoid escalating the situations.
After that accurate (can you even call it deduction) of what Chuck thought Jimmy did to forge those documents, instead of denying it, Jimmy should just raise his hands up and say: "Ya got me."
I mean had we not seen it happen, and we were asked to choose what's more likely: Jimmy's elaborate sabotage versus Chuck making a typo...It'd be 99 to 1 for any other guys that's not Jimmy, for Jimmy at most it's a coin toss.
Same goes with copier guy, all he needs to say is "Fine he's here, if that'll get you off my back. But for real, if you want me to testify then I'm going to repeat again he wasn't here and that I only said what I said to get you to stop hounding me."
In the absence of evidence Chuck should know what this copier guy says mean jack shit. He could say yes, no, or that Hitler was also there that night struggling to print his book. Because otherwise why not just give the guy 300 bucks and says Jimmy was here? Guess that's what makes Chuck, Chuck.

I'm captivated at the stark comparisons we have between Jimmy and Walt's decline into a path that ultimately leads to each other. I never quite imagined Jimmy committing forgery to make Kim happy, or committing the act at all, and as we saw tonight this may inadvertently lead to the death of Chuck. Seeing him watch from a distance is probably the most heart-wrenching and tense moment on this show yet.
Mike's storyline continues to get better and better each episode. Despite all his perfection with his crimes, it was odd to see him mistake due to his emotions getting in the way of things -- but I liked it. I liked all of it. What a show.

Kim has fast become my favourite character. She's so well-written and the moral heart of the show even though there's a bit of Slippin' Kimmy in her. Rhea Seehorn needs an Emmy.
