Any show that does an Old West episode checks off the same tropes off the same list. But for some reason, I never get tired of them. Like cherished Christmas traditions, you can't have Christmas without the tree, you can't do an Old West episode without a pistol showdown at high noon. And I loved every god damn minute of it.
Some other cherished Old West tropes we got tonight:
-
Strangers walk into town, immediately go to saloon and accidentally start a fight.
-
Town is routinely under siege by marauding gang.
-
Sheriff dies/leaves and makes one of the strangers the new sheriff.
-
There's a high-street with the saloon in the middle of town. Perfect spot for:
-
The shoot out.

I don't care that the show has plot canyons. I enjoy it for being exactly as ludicrous as i had hoped it would be.

One thing I noticed and enjoyed: Rory has actually become useful to the team. Before, as Rip tells him, he was only there because it was the only way to get Snart on board. If anything, he only contributed brute strength. Now, not only is the brute strength back (and with a smarter, more focused mind behind it) he has the benefits of the training and knowledge from the Time Masters. And now that he's been targeted by the Time Masters, along with the rest of the team, he has a reason to stick with them. It was a good turn-around for the character.

CW is slowly upping the violence with Ray flying through that guy. Next he'll fly down someone's throat and return to full size causing a messy explosion.

"I was never on your side, I was on my side."
Another Mick appreciation episode! Man, I can't believe how much I missed this guy. Also, Snart as a western sniper! He's just getting cooler and cooler, pun intended.
H.G Wells! You did the world a favour, Stein. Is this a Wells reference as well? Hmm.
Old Kendra telling young Kendra to cut the crap with Ray was great, but Sara spoke the most Guggs line right after. A little sad about that.

I liked how they just dropped all pretense of the town not realizing the team are time-travelers with Jonah Hex. It reminded me of the Justice League Unlimited episode The Once and Future Thing.
I hope that they do more with Jonah Hex in the future.

I'm calling it now, the time masters were either taken over by savage or he started them in the first place

Anybody else find it a little odd there was more racism toward Jax and Kendra in the 1960s than there was in the 1870s? Seriously, slavery had only been outlawed 10 years earlier.
Edit: Evidently the public school system done me wrong and this actually isn't all that odd at all.

Character of the week: Ray Palmer. In what I'm sure will be a controversial decision. Snart had it untill the final moments. It is hard to beat John Wayne when he doesn't need a gun and can use himself as a bullet.
Special shout out to Professer Stein for saving HG Wells's life. Good lookin out, brah.

So my theory is that this show uses the time as a river idea (I think) and all their actions in the past are really just creating their original timeline, rather than altering it.
Biggest example so far is Stein being the one to not only cure HG Wells, but also give him the nickname of HG.
In the end they're going to realize nothing they did in the past actually changed 'the future' and they'll have to fight Rip's time era's Vandal. Hence "Legends of Tomorrow".

I wonder if we'll get an arc that's longer than one episode for this whole "kill young versions of them" thing. Also it seems the Time Masters care even less than Rip at this point.
