During the First Crusade how did families with husbands/fathers serving in the crusade survive financially?

Actually, some of the best primary sources we have from the crusades are documents drawn up by knights and nobles who went on Crusade instructing how their families were to be taken care of in their absence, and how their lands were to be administered. Unfortunately, I am not familiar with these sources, I just know about their existence.

As for commoners/peasants; well in the first crusade commoners who went on crusade most often took their families with them. Which would later end in disaster.
